    What absolute courage this man has to play pieces like Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2 and Fantaisie-Impromptu at the CHOPIN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION. He played them extremely well, of course.

    • @eliyasara9786
      @eliyasara9786 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      This piece is actually not a particularly difficult Chopin one, I'm currently playing it and it is quite simple, very repetitive. It's very beautiful because of its simplicity and emphasis on intentional improvisation, but I don't think its a massively 'out there' choice at all, it's actually pretty safe.

    • @semschenk6173

      @@eliyasara9786 i think he made the comment bc these pieces are played a lot.

      @@semschenk6173 true they are overplayed but in a place like the Chopin competition these pieces become the most underplayed. It's quite a smart move as he's probably the only one that played these pieces.

      The most simple piece is usually the most difficult one to play

    • @User36282
      @User36282 2 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      @@eliyasara9786 They are not saying these pieces are difficult, they are saying he has courage because they are NOT the most difficult pieces, so he has to play them extremely well for the judges to consider him. It's not 'safe' to play these when you're competing with much more difficult pieces played at a very high level.

      Yes, I play this piece, and I know what it means to play this with deep emotional style and superb 👌 expertise. Of course I cannot play it as well as Dimitry does, nor by memory 🙄😒😏 but I am getting close to achieving the right nuances and phrasing that the music requires with the score in front of me 😁😊

      I believe the opposite. This piece can tell you if the pianist knows the piece well, knows chopin and is a professional, or if on the contrary, is not a pro and exaggerates the rubato everywhere.

    Sehnsucht. Melancholie. Streben nach der Vergangenheit.
    Ich laufe durch die Straßen mit großen, gemütlichen Häusern.
    Innen drin leben unzählige Schicksale. Ich wandere nur hindurch.
    Ich will doch nur zurück in die Vergangenheit, um dieses tolle Erlebnis, diese tollen Menschen und diese wunderschönen Erinnerungen wieder leben zu können.
    Ich wünschte ich könnte aus diesem Labyrinth der Straßen laufen und plötzlich zwei Wochen in der Zeit zurückgereist sein.
    Auf diesem Wege spiele ich dieses Stück. Es führt mich, meine Sehnsucht, mein Verlangen, mein "Rachmaninoff-Gefühl" durch die Straßen.
    Umherwandernd auf der Suche nach dem Vergangenen, diesem wunderschönen Erlebnis.
    Aber Zeit vergeht.
    Und man kann nichts dagegen tun.
    Man kann nicht zurück in die Vergangenheit reisen.
    Diese Erinnerungen an dieses Erlebnis - sie werden für immer nur Erinnerungen bleiben.
    Doch in Momenten wie jetzt, abends beim Wandern durch diese Straßen in Dunkelheit. Mit dieser Musik.
    Da komme ich der Vergangenheit, diesem Erlebnis, so nah wie nirgends sonst.
    Doch das gleiche wie damals war es nie.
    Und wird es auch nie sein...

    This totally captivated me.. His gentle playing and in my opinion expert dynamic skills, he awed me into silence. I couldn't believe every place I thought he'd hitch he played smoothly through it. Though I'm probably not qualified to say it, but he is an extremely gifted pianist, who has won my love and support. When he also played fantaisie Impromtu, I felt absolutely sucked in to the sound of the piano and the piano alone. I have no words to describe how much I this affected me, but I can say. Thank you.

    At 1:15 look how he uses both fingers 5 & 4 to descend from b flat to f. It’s like little legs walking or ice skating, hehe. It’s impressive!

    He was probably breathing in a certain way so as to not mess up the timing of the melody. It also adds a bonus of giving him something to focus on rather than the difficulty of the piece and the intensity of the audience's eye.
