    what i've also read is that no matter how much you have forgotten a memory, you'll still feel the emotion from that memory. there is a video of an old man with Alzheimers listening to a music and starting to lighten up again. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is my favorite movie so far in my search for favorites and i've seen it atleast 20 times. there is so many details in that movie and i always spot new things each time i see it. great video!

      Yeah, that's called implicit memory, emotions, smells that bring up nostalgic memories, etc. What they've gotten rid of in this movie is explicit memories. it's part of why Clementine has her little emotional breakdown before asking Patrick to go to montauk with her. But I've definitely seen the videos you're talking about. It's some heartwarming stuff. There's a great 1990s movie with Robin Williams and Robert de Niro called awakenings that deals with a similar situation, and a similar potential affect rising from music. One of Robin Williams first serious roles that open people's minds to him being a phenomenal drama actor.
      Thanks for watching

    This is lovely, after watching the movie i knew immediately that i have to rewatch it, and i will. Something i can think of right now is how Clem asks Joel at the beginning if she has seen him somewhere but then comes up with Barnes and Noble, this is why i have to watch it again im sure i missed so much

    Fantastic video! However I did want to make a mention of the implication behind the significance of "nice" and the state of their relationship after the procedure. I think the "nice" scenes are important in implying unavoidable change between the first and the second relationships. This is tied in with "the stalker book." Basically, Patrick uses Joel's previous successes as a template for his relationship with Clementine. The word nice is one of these details, as Patrick is shown to be explicitly mirroring Joel as well as Joel inherently using the word as it's in his nature to do so. However as we see through Joel's experience, the procedure left some remnant of their emotional attachments to the memories targeted and erased -- which culminates in the pair meeting for a second time and Clementine having adverse reactions to Patrick mimicking Joel's actions.
    Patrick is important here. He, along with the procedure, sets Clementine up to react adversely to the contents of the stalker book, built up from Joel's past actions. This itself forces the second relationship into a new direction as Joel will be inclined to act differently than he had before in order to find success in the relationship. I think this is true for both parties, though. Especially when they decide to continue on in a new relationship despite knowing that there are things they will both resent about the other. I think this is incredibly important as it signifies their willingness to embrace each other regardless of what may come. Combined with the addition of the Lacuna tapes showcasing all of their resentments towards the other person -- which they can observe objectively because they've had the procedure and gained emotional detachment from the problems of the past.
    To put it simply, Patrick, Mary and the procedure itself give Joel and Clem a significant advantage in overcoming obstacles they faced in their "past lives", so to speak. I think the film does a fantastic job of threading in evidence to support an emotional rebirth, the acceptance of change, and the renewal of virtues within their relationship.

    This VIDEO reads like a favorite a book! Seriously, this is so good. I've seen the movie multiple times, and yet just now I saw it in a completely different light, considering things I had not before.
    It's funny because the reason why I've always loved this movie so much is not because it's "romantic" or anything like that, it's exactly because of the melancholy and hopelessness that often comes with wanting to be with someone who is just not who you should be with, no matter how drawn you are to each other, or how intense the feeling you share is. And you've put a lot of that into words I hadn't thought of before, specifically the way one would interpret that ending, because I desperately desperately want that last "okay" to mean that they'll make it work because they need to be together, and yet rationally I know they can't (or shouldn't, at least). Because I know the feeling, and because the movie and the way it portrays this average and relatable relationship hits so close to home that you almost can't help but to root for them regardless of the vicious cycle they'll end up perpetuating.
    Anyway, amazing analysis, thank you for all the work you put into this!

      The Thought Room thanks for that comment! I'm so glad that this keeps hitting home for people as the years go on. I look back and have very few regrets- and see very few flaws with it. Maybe one or two. I forgot to mention the lacuna trio drinking his liquor and him telling Clementine the next morning when he gets her a drink: "Sorry, I thought I had more" but otherwise I think it hits point after point after point. I need to rewatch it. It's been over a year. Thanks again. So nice to see this kind if reaction.

    The first time I watched this wonderful film, I had the biggest case of chills down my spine ever when Clementine said "Meet me in Montauk". Thank you for this well thought out analysis. I particularly appreciated your views on color symbolism - particularly blue ruin. Eternal Sunshine is SO haunting and is one of my favourite all time movies.
    What I am most intrigued with is the failure of the treatments of Joel, Clementine and Mary. Even after memories of her previous affair with the doctor have been erased, Mary's attraction to Dr. M. is reconstituted. In their dreams, Joel and Clementine fight hard to resist the treatment in order to earn a second chance.
    Will they make it? In his dreams Joel actually does seem to have a "change of heart" and decides to stay this time. In the final scene they may have crossed a most important bridge when after hearing their respective tapes, they simply say "OK". Still we know practically nothing about Joel or whether Clementine will muster enough control to conquer her self-destructive demons.

    • @robertchoward
      @robertchoward 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think the words of the song Clementine need to be mentioned, "You are gone and lost forever, dreadful sorry Clementine". I wonderful if those words are the genesis of the entire concept and screenplay.

      I watch this movie usually this time of year, and then I really savour it for some time. Your analysys was great, and helpful! This film is perfect for savouring, I love to find new things and how they don't seem forced like in a kind of game or brain teaser that has to be super fancy and contrived, but they flow perfectly from the story and just give wider image.
      I was wondering about one thing, there's this scene when Joel comes back for a second time to the memory already erased, where Howard explains that he can't help him, and Joel brings Clementine again, and they all have blurred faces. Joel turns to Clem who suddenly also becomes blurred, and he sees this woman in some red sweater - and she's nothing like Clementine, at all. Lately I thaught it could be Mary, 'cause the lady is blonde, but she has a different figure than both of the ladies... she's like no-one we've seen until that moment. So I wonder if it's a flaw in the movie or some effect I didn't get yet... You have any ideas? Or maybe to you she looks like Mary or Clem?

    • @TurtleMarathon
      @TurtleMarathon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Madeleine you’re bringing up more and more I didn’t notice ... I’ll have to check that out and see if something clicks. Keep commenting if you have other ideas.

    • @MMaaddeelleeiinnee
      @MMaaddeelleeiinnee 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ok, here's another one then :D . When Clem talks with Joel in bed and tells him about her lonely childhood, we see her toys, her doll, her pictures as a little girl. We know those pictures also from the beggining of the film when Joel collects stuff releted to her. And then, when Joel takes her to his memory from childhood and they're kids, she's wearing that pink costume from the picture.
      One thing I don't like noticing is when Mary talks to a patient and says their policy forbids to have 3 procedures in one month... how come this person could know that they've already had any?
      When do you think the scene from opening credits takes place in the story? It's dark, so it's the evening when he despairs in his car after finding out, but where does he get the cassette from (the one that he throws off from the car)?

    • @TurtleMarathon
      @TurtleMarathon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Madeleine good eye (once again!) I'll have to think about that opening scene where the "everybody's gotta learn sometimes" song plays while he drives around. Especially concerning the cassette... Was it his? Hers? How'd he get it? That's worth thinking about. Will touch base soon!

    I don't actually agree with the shouldn't be together bit. I think you're right that they won't learn and they are perpetually doomed to fail because they erase their memories and do not learn from the experience we saw in which the projections of themselves in Joel's mind did learn to appreciate each other and Joel learns to open up (obviously we don't know if Clementine had the same experience but because they both end up back in Montauk I think she does). I read somewhere that an early plot idea was to have the film end with an elderly Joel and Clem having minds erased because they constantly repeated the same process and the ending of the actual film on the beach was supposed to reflect a repetitive cycle as well as a deleted scene were Naomi sounds like she's been through all of this before with Joel shows that it has happened before and will again which is why I think they're meant to be together and in a normal world potentially they could but in a world were they have the capability to erase certain memories (something that on the surface sounds fantastic) they are burdened with the inability to learn and I think that's part of the tragedy the film tries to convey.
    I know you mention in the stages of grief that Clem says in her tape "he makes me bitchy and I don't like being bitchy" but to me, this sounds like something that could be talked over with a friend or family member rather than taking a huge leap straight into splitting up and mind erasing. I think this is because she doesn't actually have any friends or family. The film makes a point of introducing Joe's friends (Rob and Carrie) but Clem never has any she only has Joel (I know she goes to that party which leads to the breakdown but we don't actually know what that party is, who it's for or what really takes place. Similarly on Clems tape Joel rants about the hair. Another mundane topic brought about by the build-up of anger (as you said) but I think Joel has an underlying issue of being unable to communicate. Once again no obvious family to speak of and friends who don't seem the type to easily talk to about your frustrations (Rob seems very controlling and short-tempered and when Carrie tries to offer any advice or comfort she is shot down and berated by Rob in their borderline abusive relationship.)
    To me, the scenes where Joel tries to hide Clem in his deeper memories are a metaphor for him opening up to Clem. I think it's at this point Joel learns to communicate but unfortunately, it's erased and any development he may have had has gone.
    I loved hearing your view on the stages of grief though and I'll definitely be thinking of it next time I watch the film. I don't think I agree with it but it's a really interesting viewpoint for me to consider :)
    I loved your video man. This is, without doubt, my favourite film and one of the reasons for this is because I think there are so many different ways to interpret it and I loved hearing different viewpoints and I hope you don't mind me sharing mine under your video as it's the closest I'll get to a discussion about it :) Thanks for the video.

      I just saw this movie for the first time and had to delve deeper, so thank you Finger Brained for this amazing analysis! Also therequestdude, great addition about the memories being a metaphor for opening up, I think that's really true. And I'd personally like to believe they are not stuck in a loop. they have the tapes, which could help them once they find their relationship becoming less ideal, and although they won't remember their regret of the deletion progress, I think that simply knowing that the deletion happened (and the weirdness and emptiness it brought with it) will make them realize that it wasn't the right decision.

    If we could make things different. Not be in a relationship a "mistake" we had. Would we? Would we just end up with something similar. Are we just drawn to this type of experience/misery? This movie tells that we are. We need to go through that experience, we will forever be drawn to it until We've done with it. And dealt with it.
    It's a comforting feeling. Instead of feeling like: you'd have done things differently, thinking you'd always have to go through it, makes things easier to swallow.

      Kind of like reincarnation (hear me out). The idea that the soul has to go through things for us to move forward to the next stage, otherwise we will go back a stage or repeat it. So Joel and Clem have to go through what they're experiencing and not erase it, otherwise they're stuck in an endless cycle of repeat until they learn.

  • @archieopteryx8828

    This is great, it ads a lot of depth to the movie I hadn't considered.
    I didn't pick up on the Kubler-Ross reference. It made me notice that when Clem has the red hair, she is frequently matching it with blue clothing - t-shirts, coats & matching hair ties, which is making a visual loop back to "blue ruin" (and in contrast to Clem's colours, the whole movie Joel wears dark neutral colours except when he is a little kid).
    One thing that I noticed about the film's symbolism that wasn't mentioned here is the name Lacuna for the office- Lacuna is a type of amnesia and stroke (implying that the procedure is, as one would imagine, a lot more severe than "a night of heavy drinking" m and here are some other meanings of Lecuna that I just cherry picked from the Wiki page on the word*-
    Lacuna (manuscripts), a gap in a manuscript, inscription, text, painting, or musical work (Dr. Mierzwiak mentions that Joel's ripped out journal entries were important or valuable)
    Scientific lacuna, an area of science that has not been studied but has potential to be studied (the movie characters are skeptical that this can be done, they say "this is not a thing")
    Interesting that you felt that Dr. Mierzwiak is kind of sociopathic because that meshes well with the level of unprofessionalism in the office. He hires these kids who are playing around and goofing off in the office even when patents are around which should be worrying in a procedure that should really be done by medical professionals, but it gets worse when the dr isn't even paying attention to what is going on during these procedures and it is so bad that they are getting stoned and drunk (even stealing clients liquor) and dancing over the clients in their bed as they are undergoing this delicate procedure, and Patrick brings a while new dimension to the unprofessional behaviour by the immature staff by stealing Clementine's underwear, dating Clementine, and, as mentioned, using Joel's journal to parrot Clementine's and Joel's relationship (this actually shows how stupid Patrick really is- who would want to mimic a failed relationship?
    I think that this lack of professional behavior and lack of respect for the patients in the procedure might be a reference to how some of the doctors who performed prefrontal lobotomies just acted like total imbeciles during the procedure.
    And Dr. Mierzwiak himself had trouble with professionalism, since he had that fling with Mary.
    Speaking of Mary, you said that there was no yellow hair that represented acceptance? It might be Mary with her yellow blonde hair, but only in the stage prior to Mrs. Mierzwiak brings her crashing to reality learning that she had undergone the procedure.
    Thanks!
    *en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacuna

    • @TurtleMarathon
      @TurtleMarathon  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great points about Lacuna- I'm suddenly kicking myself for not looking it up. Of course Charlie Kauffman would have a reason for picking that as the company name. Oh, well- a missed opportunity.
      Interesting idea about Mary's hair being the "Yellow" Clem mentioned on the train- there were some moments in the script that ended up being deleted scenes... one of them was Mary listening to her 'tape' after learning her & Mierzwiak were an item- in the tape she learned she was convinced to do multiple procedures- not just Lacuna but also to get an abortion- the scene can be found on TH-cam. It's really messed up how he leads her along- suggestive tone- insisting he knows best.
      So while I agree that was a particularly nasty thing to do- I think I was referring to Patrick being the sociopath- stealing Joel's Journal- which I think Kauffman meant to be "the stalker book"- but maybe I did call Mierzwiak a sociopath & I've just forgotten. Its hard to tell if he feels any regret- besides the regret of being caught by his wife (for the 2nd time)- & also the look he gives Stan as he says "We'll talk-" its just kind of soul-less.
      Anyways- all fantastic points. Thanks for leaving such a thoughtful comment!

    • @archieopteryx8828
      @archieopteryx8828 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ohhhh my bad (regarding who is the sociopath) - everyone at that clinic sort of bully each other in kind of a highschoolish way, Patrick gets bullied by everyone though haha. I don't know if I'd peg him as being sociopathic though he just seems to me to be one of those people who do really innapropriate stuff because they don''t understand boundaries and Patrick is that kind of person magnified. He acts like Clementine is his first girlfriend ever and so while he does stuff that is objectively horrible, I don't think he understands that the things he does is so bad or why it's bad- like stealing the underwear. His actions a very "end justifies the means" and "it's k as long as no one gets hurt" but is kind of kind of thing. (Sorry I'm babbling a bit I have a migraine and didn't sleep last night).
      I did see that deleted scene about Mary having an abortion - I wonder if there is a version you can get with the deleted scenes in place. I think leaving that scene in would have made that part much more powerful but I can also see why they tor it out as it is a hot-button issue and could cause a good chunk of the audience to lose sympathy for Mary. The more I think about it though the creepier that part gets to me. She's young and has a crush on the man and he's taken advantage of her not juts physically/sexually, but mentally too, would you let an ex go into your brain and wipe stuff? And on the tape Mierzwiak goes "we agreed this is the best" so Mary has been coerced into this- if they had left in the bit about the abortion, it would show Dr Mierzwiak just takes what he wants away from people to avoid reprocussion- very predatorial, while Mary's pretty naieve and he just keeps taking from her and getting away with it scott-free, if that makes sense. It's literally a mind fuck :o He has that soft quiet gentle appearence, but as his wife says, he's a monster.
      I'm going to give it another watch with the Kubler-ross PoV in mind and see if I still think that Mary is "Acceptence", because at the end of the film she also starts the journey of the stages of groed, maybe we can get a hint of that, in the afore mentioned deleted scene, she mentions Mierzwiak gives her a green frog desk ornament- you said that green represemted denial and she does say that what they do at Lacuna is noble and "wiping people clean and new like a baby" - that's a denial way of looking at Lacuna if I ever heard one.
      Sorry about the long paragraphs :D

    I've seen the colours talked about as a parallel for seasons. Green being spring, the start of their relationship, then summer, red, autumn, orange, and finally blue for winter. I don't disagree with you, I think they're both interesting and valid perspectives, and perhaps both interpretations are intended. I've heard it said that it's a test for whether you think optimistically or pessimistically.

    • @TurtleMarathon
      @TurtleMarathon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I remember when that video came out. It sort of annoyed me. I keep an eye out for any new eternal Sunshine analysis videos. I didn't find their argument very compelling, nor fun to think about. I don't remember if they mention the script colors like yellow fever, but I left a lengthy comment on it back when it was released detailing the problems with it. I don't remember what they were. Not a very memorable position. 🤷🏻‍♂️
      The great thing about Charlie Kaufman is a lot of interpretations can feel valid and he outright refuses to explain them from his POV. Which I appreciate. He wants people to have their own experience.

    One of the most interesting things about the movie is the sketches by Joel. These sketches are randomly placed in everywhere...in joels room, journal, near to door etc. These sketches were actually drawn by Paul Proch

    I thought this analysis was very well done and reasoned even though i don't agree with several of your arguments personally. However, that is what i love so much about this movie is that everyone views it through the lens of their own life, history, pain, and experiences with love and sees something different. Although it might seem like an oversimplification, the hallway scene at the end is acceptance for both of them. They have heard all the innermost thoughts and criticisms of each other and they realize that they matter but not enough to deter trying again, and this time, armed with knowledge of what failed before. In other words, they both realize that the juice is worth the squeeze.

    • @TurtleMarathon
      @TurtleMarathon  ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure. I think my main thought on that is they are forced into accepting something inevitable and end up trying again regardless. But thank you. Been a long long time since I did one of these and since they’re my most popular videos by far I should probably give it another go and analyze something else soon. I appreciate it. 👍

    10:15 I completely disagree, there are hints of yellow in the hallway at the conclusion of the film and slightly prior to that, the roots of Clementine's hair appears yellow from the light of joel's window instead of greenish, like the scenes on the train. Its there, clear for me, there are hints of yellow/hope at the end... Even the title "sunshine" = yellow, bright future for letting go of the past or having a "spotless mind"

    • @TurtleMarathon
      @TurtleMarathon  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Okay you're the first comment in five years that has made me want to go back and watch like I truly missed something. Might be time. I'll keep what you've said in mind. I definitely think the dispair outshines any sunshine and the hopelessness of that sunshine, just misplaced, well-intended cautious optimism is sort of the message Charlie Kauffman would like to put forth- But I'm open to being off on that. I'm just going by an in-tandem review of script to screen and I wasn't seeing that connection play out. But with kauffman/gondry- what you see isn't the goal of what you should take away from it so I'll digest this and put this film on my list of things to watch for the first time in 5-ish years. I got some post-surgery recovery to be doing and I got allllll the time in the world to revisit all of the movies. Olive 'em.
      Thanks for watching & the thoughtful comment.

    I think the main reason why I live this movie is because of how depressing it is for me. I bought the director's edition and after he mentioned that it was up to us with the repeating cut of them in the snow, I embraced the screenplay ending: that they were doomed to repeat the relationship over and over again.

    • @SelenaSea
      @SelenaSea 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except on this occasion, Patrick's use of the "stalker book" to pursue Clem, and Mary's dispatch of the memory tapes to Lacuna's patients, may set Joel and Clementine's relationship on a different trajectory: one where they embrace one another despite the things that they may, again, come to resent about each other.
      An earlier commenter on this video put it well: _"...Patrick, Mary and the procedure itself give Joel and Clem a significant advantage in overcoming obstacles they faced in their "past lives", so to speak. I think the film does a fantastic job of threading in evidence to support an emotional rebirth, the acceptance of change, and the renewal of virtues within their relationship."_ - Gerald Wiseman

    Very nice part about the steps of grief and Clementine's hair colour, that was really well though out, especially the vicious circle that comes in last. How do you notice all these patterns in movies ? Is it just from watching the movie or do you get inspired from various analysis of it ?

    • @TurtleMarathon
      @TurtleMarathon  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey, Thanks a ton for this comment. I didn't venture into watching any analysis videos and reading analysis blogs or papers that people wrote in film school until after I dropped this video. So I was very glad to see I was the first person to ever bring up that hair color bit. I love movies that beg to be rewatched & deserve to be interpreted so that was all the inspiration I needed. This is, so far, my favorite film of all time. Its been awhile since I released this... & it was my first movie review/analysis so I kinda wish I had held back & waited until my pacing skills were better & found a way to include all the details I found without it being reeeeeally long. Maybe in a few years I'll redo this, but as of now its my most popular video, by far & its the video I spent the most time on. So it feels great for it to be getting this attention/feedback.
      Again- really appreciate that comment!

    There aren't any characters for reference. That is, if they had edited with friends opinions the audience would be aware of Joel's sequence. I'd like to see an edited version for clarity, so that TH-cam viewers aren't confused or someone has to watch it twice. Also reading the book, or script would help someone who really enjoyed this story.

    • @TurtleMarathon
      @TurtleMarathon  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure what you mean. Although- I'm firmly done with film reviews I think. Hitting the 60k mark for views was nice and all but putting 100 hours into a video is a sure way to ruin a film for me. Anyways, I probably should have shown the screenplay for this the same way I showed the book for my A Scanner Darkly review so some text gave context for how Michel Gondry interpreted Kaufmann's script and did his own picking and choosing between internal and spoken dialogue. Probably would have been a good move on my part.

    • @TurtleMarathon
      @TurtleMarathon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      🤷‍♂️what about it? Bringing up obvious & rhetorical questions was kind of low on my list. So, Charlie Kaufman's is speaking to the audience more than Joel is speaking to Clem. I guess it's cool... But I was trying to address hard questions that aren't directly asked rather than overt obvious easy ones that are asked point blank.
      Or.... Is there a literal white elephant?
      Idk. It's just not that important from an analysis perspective.

    i heard the movie had a deeper meaning..assisted suicide... think about it..joel sees his life flash before his eyes into black nothingness.. he changes his mind afterward... trying to hang onto his memories and life..i get that it was about his relationship its more appropriate than a sad suicide topic for mainstream audiences but re watch it you'll see the symbolism everywhere

    • @TurtleMarathon
      @TurtleMarathon  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yeah. No. I mean, you're allowed to think/believe that- but its a stretch. Just because you can interpret it that way doesn't mean its a good interpretation. Charlie Kauffman specifically writes so that people can have repeat viewings of the same product at different points in their lives and have profoundly different experiences. So... watch it in 5 years and you'll probably disagree with your own interpretation. Its beautifully open-ended but I outright reject the "think about it, Rewatch it, you'll see what I mean" attached to your viewpoint. I won't see it. 'Cause I'm not you and what you're going through while you experience Eternal Sunshine.
