She's still had a solid career, but no doubt it must have sucked getting cut out.

My wife and I recently separated after I learned that she was hiding an affair. I watched Eternal Sunshine for the first time to have a good cry. On the first watch I thought, I'm Joel and she's Clementine. And I missed her.
But after watching this video essay, these deleted scenes helped me realize that SHE is Joel, and I am... Naomi! And as time passed and I rewatched the film, my perspective changed.
Now I feel that Joel and Clementine don't have a healthy relationship worth envying. Instead of shared core values and admirable character traits, all they have in common is codependent behavior. I realize that sadly, they really deserve each other, and I am lucky that I stepped out of the path of that train.
In the end, we all like to paint ourselves as the hero of our movie. We are all flawed humans and unreliable narrators. So it's easy to paint over our faults. Learning to step outside of your assumptions and see things from a true objective perspective is an invaluable life skill.
Thanks for contributing this essay. It helped me gain valuable perspective on how to heal from an unhealthy relationship and take ownership of behaviors in my control to change. I hope others going through the same situation find peace and understanding.
I'm truly sorry to hear that. But I tend to believe that people reveal themselves for who they truly are in those awful moments, and the positive take-away is that you're better off without them. No one should be betrayed like that, we all deserve to be treated with respect and fairness. Exiting a long-term relationship is never easy, but it can be a really powerful journey of self discovery if you let yourself feel whatever you need to feel, and talk everything through with people you trust.

And reading YOUR comment made me realize the exact same thing. First I was worried that I'd never see this film the same again, that our protagonist wasn't the guy we thought.. but then I was happy to read your interpretation that Joel is the adulterer, which sorta makes Naomi our off-screen protagonist in a way.
My timeline is a little fuzzy, but perhaps this means that Joel was trying to erase the memory of the affair in order to remove his guilt and get back together with Naomi? And that even so, destiny made it so that Joel and Clem still found each other. Like you said they have a codependent relationship and perhaps they really are meant for each other. Perhaps they'll go on to cheat on each other.

I’ve never seen the deleted scenes but now that I have I’m glad they didn’t make the cut as it allows the audience to piece together the story themselves. Great analysis 👍🏻
I agree, I think it makes us more of a participant in the story, with less rigidly defined interpretations I think it makes it more engaging. Plus, less depressing, which is a bonus. Thank you!

I think that's what's so interesting about this movie, the way it makes us think about our own memories and how they've shaped us into who we are. We've all probably got memories like that, that have faded from our minds but still effect us in ways we don't realize.

Michel Gondry's movies are always some of my favourites. I'm more of a fan of "The Science of Sleep" (all time favourite movie) though, but Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind will always be amongst my favourite as well.
Everyone, if you love this movie, go watch Synecdoche, New York. Charlie Kaufman wrote the screenplay for both (along with Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Anomolisa) and he's so under-appreciated. Give the man all your money, he writes some of the greatest movies.

Yeah! And it's a play on Schenectady which is right near where I live. I don't recommend going there :-D hahaha. It's also where "A Place Among The Pines" takes place, which is... another great movie.

Seeing that first deleted scene made me shiver in absolute existential horror. I tried to figure out why I was getting chills down my spine but my head was completely blank. Anyway, great video.
Funny story, so I knew I wanted to make a video about this movie as it's been one of my favorites for like, 10 years now, but I really didn't know what angle to approach it from. As part of my research phase I was searching on TH-cam for behind the scenes clips, interviews from the cast or crew, etc. and came upon these deleted scenes, that first scene with the phone call was the first I watched and my jaw practically hit the floor. All I could think was "Joel's kind of an asshole! This changes everything!" Of course after writing and editing the video, and rewatching the film with this newfound context, I still think he's more than a redeemable character, but it just goes to show that even the good guy can have his flaws, and that we all have messy details we'd leave out of our stories if we shared them with the world.
Had no idea how powerful the deleted scenes in this movie were - will definitely rewatch it with a new perspective. Would love to see you do more video essays on deleted scenes and extras.

This blew my mind! I've seen the movie at least a dozen times, it's one of my favorite movies. I honestly wish the movie included those scenes of Naomi. I think it adds more to Joel's character. Some might say it makes him less sympathetic because it makes him a little morally grey. I love what Kaufman says in the interview. People cheat on each other or end relationships for selfish or self destructive reasons in real life. Eternal Sunshine is a wonderfully honest and realistic movie because of the incredible acting, writing, and directing of a fantastical story that is so emotionally true.
I have seen this movie more than most in my life, I adore it. I'm conflicted, honestly, I kind of like that they're almost an Easter Egg, but I definitely like what it adds to the story. Bam, yeah, you said it, there really isn't a thing I don't like about this movie.
Great essay. I love the reminder of how important the editing process is in telling and shaping the story. Reminds me of Nerdwriter's essay on restructuring Passengers, and how by shifting and excluding moments, an entirely different film takes place. Bravo!

This is absolutely fantastic! I love eternal sunshine but I never saw the cut scenes and this makes for a different view, but at the same time is as you said something we kind of knew, it was hidden in plain sight.

I absolutely loved this essay, not only as an Eternal Sunshine fan, but as a fan of cinema in general, what an awesome demonstration of the power and importance of editing. Regular moviegoers like me don't usually notice all the technique and detail that go into it (ironically, bad editing seems to be much more noticeable, while great editing flies under the radar and leads our perception and reactions by the nose unnoticed), it's fascinating to take a peek behind the curtains like this.
Thank you so much! One of the biggest reasons I started this channel was seeing all of these different critical channels tearing movies apart, bad movies, good movies, people would just take a big dump all over them, which always felt really easy and cheap to me. I think it's a much greater challenge to break down a film that's actually really good and try to understand why, and I try to explore that as much as possible in my videos.
I love the focus on the aspect of deleted scenes. Often Film buffs bemoan the loss of any scene(s) to a movie, but people forget that sometimes scenes are cut for very very sound reasons (And not just run-time constraints). Sometimes entire subplots or minor characters are cut out of a film for variety of reasons (pacing, tone, impact, etc).
As I mentioned recently I strongly felt The Hateful 8 had suffered in this aspect, due to the editing. Parts were too long, scenes often felt abrupt, disruptive, disjointed, the pacing was strange. It had all the crucial elements to be great but jumbled them up in the presentation.

I've heard this before too, not having seen it, I can't say, but I'm kind of worried about watching it. I love all of the movies of his that I've seen so far, and I'm nervous. I know he didn't have Sally on TH8, but then again, she didn't do Django and I LOVED Django. Editing really is super important, way more than a lot of people realize.

Same, I think a lot of people really ought to see the film more than once, a lot of the stuff I talk about in this video seemed like news to some which just seemed really strange to me, but I guess a lot of people do think of Joel as shy and innocent. I think he's just got his problems, like all of us, he's only human and to me these deleted scenes don't make me hate him, just question some of his choices. Thank you :>

Wow! This video couldn't have come up at a better time for me. I just watched the film yesterday for the first time. I also read about the Kuleshov effect today. This can't be a coincidence! I haven't been overwhelmed by the film, mainly because of the confusing editing. But after watching your video, I think I can appreciate the film and Kaufman's idea more. Well done :)
That's pretty crazy actually, I'd definitely recommend giving it another watch, the chronology can be pretty confusing after the first viewing.
It’s funny how much I relate to this movie, I’ve never been in a relationship in my 18 years of life bit I still connect to this movie more than any other for other reasons. That’s how you know how good it is.

I honestly don't know, I think studios are taking less and less chances these days. If you're looking for something out there, surreal and strange, I'd recommend "mother!" It's graphic, it's disturbing, so if you're not into that sort of thing I'd say stay away, but otherwise, it's one of the most surreal major films to come out in years.
Okay, this is brilliant and really well written, but let me take a second to acknowledge the fact that your voice is beautiful and so soothing, I could listen to you all day, specially if you'd be talking about movies. :)

Well done. I love this film and can watch it forever. Like Kaufmann, typicial romantic films are poison to me. They make so little sense except as reference points on how not to make a film or how to think of actual romantic attachments. Your take on Joel and the absence/not absence of Naomi was fantastic. Had she been in the film I wonder if her presence would have disrupted the structure in some way.
You're not wrong about that my dude! Most romance films present horrible life advice, and should be ignored completely. I imagine it would have disrupted the structure greatly, so I see why they cut her out.

I'm doing a homework for a psychiatry seminar about personality disorders. The doctor asked us to analyze Clementine and well, I ran into this video, that while it doesn't focus a lot on the traits I'm searching, it helped me understand a lot of things and actually clarified Clementine's character a lot better. It also helped me understand aspects of her personality that I wasn't taking into consideration because of the editing of the film, so thank you, your video clarified many concepts and has helped me complete my assignment

I really liked this analysis! You should check out Cinema Paradiso, there were similar changes done in the edit between the original director's cut and the version that completely changes how we as an audience perceive one of the main characters in the film.

What I would like to call the Donatello effect, he used to leave his sculptures rough and somewhat unfinished because he thought that the mind of the viewer works in more interesting ways to complete the unfinished details. I think the whole idea of the movie is kind of like that, also, one of the reasons that this movie stays with you because your mind keeps working on these hidden messages. Great video I watched it twice and thoroughly enjoyed!

I am a filmmaker personally making my own video essay on this film. This was incredibly done, and will likely be given a credit in my upcoming video, because it helped me shape my vision for mine. (mine is entirely different but I also wanted to focus some on the editing, and yours touches on that aspect of the film, amazingly)

this was incredible,chapeau. Eternal is one of,if not MY fav movies ever, and even after a decade+ there are still great criticism to be done about it,especially considering that the youtube critic scene didn´t exist back then. As an aside,this shows how,while 1st and foremost a craftman/woman,editting can be an art when the person and the director understand each other and the movie,because even small pieces in a random scene can change the entire thing if you don´t have the entire thing in mind

Congratulations, Daniel, on an excellent video essay. It is apt that he start with Hitchcock because he was the one who most consistently and explicitly followed through the parallel perspectives (or branches as you put it) of film construction; that from the point-of-view of the author/director and that of the audience. The later I have more often considered from a moral position (calling it "Audience subjunctive") but you are right to stress the emotional core and the way that is progressively built up through the narrative trajectory of the film. Well done.

Really appreciate the analysis. I've wanted to see the movie for years but somehow never got around to it but the circumstances of seeing it were less than ideal. Lots of distractions. I fucking loved this video. Eternal Sunshine is one of my favorite films and I never knew about these extra scenes. I would love to see an Editor's Cut with the scenes included. Most of the time the cuts are due to the film being too long rather than a particular choice the director made to tell his story. I wonder what the motivation was for going with the version we have now.
That line from "Magnolia" movie really is very profound and deep.
It would be awesome to one day actually see a edit of this movie with every scene in chronological order along side deleted scenes. It'd just would kinda put joels character into that new perspective.
I know that the movie being out of chronological order and having the audience piece things together is one of the reasons what makes this film so special.
I'm sure there's a fan edit out there somewhere, I know with Memento(similar in terms of editing, but not story or tone) there's a secret code on the DVD that plays the movie in chronological order, maybe there's one for Eternal Sunshine that no one's discovered? xD But yeah, it'd be interesting to see as an experiment, but I don't think the film would at all be as good if it weren't in non-linear order.

There should be an award for this, because it truly is all about the details. A lot of people don't get people like us who watch a lot of movies, try to see different perspectives, try to see their stories, etc. You've definitely became my favourite and eternal sunshine of the spotless mind has been one of my fav movies ever since it came out. And this gave me a whole new perspective of a movie. It doesn't matter how much time passes by in between posting your videos, it is all about quality not quantity. Just keep up the good work!

Adding my comment a little late but this has been my fav movie since I first saw it in the theatre in 2004...Loved the analysis! The deleted scenes in this movie are particularly interesting in how they change your perspective on the characters huh. There's another deleted scene where you learn that Mary was at one point (before her own memory deletion) pregnant with Howard's baby and he convinced her to have an abortion...Gives a different perspective on both those characters too I reckon
