- This song is from the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a movie I like very much. I actually did learn this song as a birthday gift for my sister, but it wasn't the easiest song to learn.
The song is simple enough, but it's that there are basically no sheets for it anywhere, and what sheets there are were riddled with faults that anyone could hear. Me and my sister tried transcribing the faulty parts by ear, and I've since made a few extra modifications.
I'm not certain it's played correctly. Or rather, I'm pretty certain it isn't played correctly, it sounds really different in a few places, but I can't figure out how it should be played for the life of me, so I guess this is sort of "my take" on it.

I'm not sure why no one plays an extended version of this song...If it could only go on for longer than 1 minute...
Yeah, I get what you mean, but structurally I actually like this length a lot since the left hand basically never repeats itself. Almost all the measures are unique in some way, just with tiny variations that give the song a nice "richness".
Shilag Oh for sure, it magnificent, it's only out of my appreciation for it's distinctive structure do i want to hear more of it, for longer.
Repetition isn't a weakness to me, too much repetition is.
That's the only reason why I looked for it on TH-cam to see if there was an extended version. If you do find one, please let me know :(
who ever did this has got a tune that sounds similar but i've never heard an accurate version of this song and i just can't figure out how to play it, it was the first song i taught myself and no matter how many difficult songs i learn whenever i come back to play this (as it sounds on the album) i just cant quite get it. :( and its one of my favourite songs. i play it slightly different to you but i still cant work it out, unless its tampered on the album, ill just have to keep trying its funny cos its a reasonably easy tune but to get it accurate is very difficult.
+expressrobkill I agree completely. I think I got reasonably close, but there's definitely some things that are just "off" about how I play it too. It's incredibly hard to pinpoint exactly how it's meant to be played, since the song is so rich, and a lot of the chords blend into each other.
It's an amazing song, nonetheless, but it is a bit frustrating.

I usually play things too fast, so I tell myself to slow down mid-song, and I guess it ended up slower than the original!

I haven't made any "conscious" modification. I was trying to play it as correctly as possible, although there are a few things I'm sure I play incorrectly, so I may rerecord it whenever I can be bothered to figure out the fully correct way.

Yeah, I've listened to this song over and over, trying to figure it out. I do believe I have it mostly correct, but it's the short part at 0:17 - 0:20 that sounds different. I can't even explain it, the original just sounds different there.
If I figure out a better way to play it I'll definitely upload an improved version in the future. (:

I'm sorry, I did use notes for reference, but most of this song is learned by ear. I unfortunately don't have the notes anymore since it's been years since I learned this song. If you search around for it I'm sure you'll be able to find some decent sheet music.

If it's any consolation, I feel the same. I'm glad so many people like my rendition, but I was never quite satisfied with it. There's just something I'm missing that's in the original piece, and I can't pinpoint what.

I just started playing the piano, so learning "by ear" won't be possible for me I'm afraid. I tried to play it like you, but I'm just not there yet... well one day perhaps :)

Thank you very much, that means a lot! There are still a few tiny aspects I'm not satisfied with, so I haven't thought about doing a tutorial. However, these piano videos were mostly uploaded for my own sake. I tried to get it as clear as I could with my crappy camera for the sake of being able to listen and see how I played it, in case I ever forget any of the songs I know. So perhaps it might be possible to play it by ear from this video? (:

Yeah, I've been playing on and off for several years. If you just keep at it you'll improve faster than you'd ever imagine. (: I learned this song just by googling "Jon Brion Row Sheet music", though I did of course make a few modification myself, since I didn't think the sheets accurately represented the song. Maybe I'll do a tutorial one day, I'll keep it in mind. :D

I'm sorry, I used some sheets I found online when I learned this years back, but they were riddled with mistakes so I adjusted it a lot by ear and I never transcribed it.

I do understand what you mean, and after trying it out it's a good guess. Though even if it's correct, it still feels like there's something missing.. If I can figure it out so that I'm satisfied I'll rerecord a new version of it.

Don't worry about it, but again.. there are C# even in the left hand, I'm positive. I do know one part of the song that I have wrong, but it doesn't have anything to do with C#. xD Are you really sure you're saying the right note?
And thanks for the offer, but I'm pretty sure I found all the sheet music that was available when I learned it, I spend a good while looking, but there wasn't a single one that was actually correct, which is why I played the song mostly by ear.

I've also listened to the song over and over trying to figure it out but I am sure I'm a much less experienced piano player than you so it is hard for me and I am really far behind from figuring it out. I know what you are talking about between 17 and 20 seconds, I'll try to explain what I think it is. I'm pretty sure that instead of playing with the right hand f sharp to d sharp like in the regular verse, it kind of reverses to d sharp to f sharp, if that makes any sense. Try to figure it out

I can't really tell you much. It's just a Swedish brand by someone named "J. G. Malmsjö" from Gothenburg. I bought it used.

+Prince MoMo Cat I'm sorry, but I have no plans of doing a tutorial for any of my piano videos. The keys are relatively clear on the screen so you could attempt to copy it by eye and ear, and if there's anything specific you're trying to figure out I could help you out, but other than that, nothing I'm afraid.
+Shilag Would you consider transcribing and putting a pdf up? The keys and what you're playing are relatively clear, but I just don't learn that way (and I'm sure I'm not the only one). If I could read it and work on it on my own without having to start and stop the video, I could get it easily. Using one of the many incorrect transcriptions out there as a skeleton shouldn't make it too much of an undertaking. And I know it'd be a chore on your part, but I would offer to pay you for it (and I'm again sure I'm not the only one).
+Taylor Townes I'm flattered, but I wouldn't feel good about doing that. I'm not a professional musician or composer, and I'm not convinced the way I'm playing it is completely correct. If you legitimately don't mind spending money, I'm very sure you can commission a professional who would do a much better job.
+Shilag Good point. Thanks for considering, anyway. If I get it from watching the video, I'll take a crack at the transcription. If it's not perfect, it'll at least be better than the one that's out there, found at the link below. Michael Jordan should stick to basketball.
