Let Me Take You On A Tour Of My 1/2 Acre Yard!

- Let me show you around where I spend a LOT of time... out in my yard at my new house on a half-acre lot. When we bought the property, it was just a dirt lot with nothing on it. I got to imagine what my perfect yard would look like... and now that we've lived here for ten months, I want to show you how it has turned out. The trees and plants all have a lot of growing still to do, but it's looking really good!
The entire back yard is lined with a block-wall fence so that we have a nice, secure yard for our (future) Cocker Spaniel... most likely joining our family this September. We also have a huge lawn so that I can use a "Chuck-It" to throw a ball long distances and tire that dog out from chasing it.
Believe it or not, there are 73 trees on our 1/2 acre lot! That's a lot, I know, but what we're trying to do is line the entire back yard with trees that will eventually block the view of our neighbors' houses and especially the huge RV storage building that one of our neighbors has. It's so big and unsightly that we just call it "the monstrosity". Hopefully, someday our trees will be tall enough and wide enough to completely block our view of it. Until then, maybe we should just project movies on to the back of it!
Regarding those 73 trees...
There are four different varieties of maple trees, including Redpointe Maples, Red Maples, Bloodgood Japanese Maples, and Amur Maples. The Amur Maples are particularly interesting for someone like me looking to create a gigantic screen... as they are very bushy and they are very fast growing. I planted the Amur Maples less than three months ago and some of them have already gained four feet in height since then. Really! Other trees on the property include spruce trees and four different varieties of apple trees.
Of course, there's more to the landscaping plan than just trees. I'll show you some of my rhododendrons, azaleas, hydrangeas, zinnias, petunias, and many other plants and vegetables in my garden.
I retired from my "real job" last year, leaving me just two other jobs: creator of TH-cam videos, and full-time landscaper of my property. Mowing the lawns, pulling the weeds, keeping everything watered, and maintaining the sprinkler system is pretty much a full-time job for me now.
LOL I dont get you northwesterners!!! As a Floridian, in that amount of space we would have a veggie garden, four banana trees, ten palm trees, a mango tree and a bunch of saw palms a fake pond and a water feature. As a native New Yorker, in that amount of space I'd build a walkup and rent it out for $3000 a month per unit LOL
Absolutely beautiful, Jim! You've clearly put so much work and effort into it, and it looks spectacular.
Im 38, and this is my dream.😢....to have a property like this with this kind of yard, and see my future grand kids running around. I wonder how much I would need to accomplish that here in PA
It is absolutely beautiful 😍 I hope one day I can have a backyard like yours.
Did anyone have the thought, "that RV building would be a great spot to project an outdoor movie from?", or was it just me? Really love your yard, it is beautiful and lovingly tended to. Thank you for sharing it with us!
Yes, my neighbors and I have all jokingly fantasized about sitting out in my back yard and watching movies on the RV storage building. However, as my trees grow in the coming years, that will no longer be possible!
I'm going to do an updated version of the yard tour this June, and probably every June until further notice, so you can see the progress from year to year.
Jim Zim, like you said that the kids when they get older, they will do the same thing as you did. I hope that one day, they should come over to your place and play model trains.
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home what a lovely lawn you have not to mention the great garden that you've done for yourself thank you once again
Well done 👍🏼
Very nice, thanks for the tour! It should be awesome to watch as these trees and plants mature into your vision for the property.
You should do a movie night where you invite all the neighbors over, put a bunch of blankets and pillows out, and project a movie on the monstrosity 😂
Exquisite Yard Jim! Well Manicured! With All Your Plants And Vegetables To Take Care Of. You'll Have No Time To Take A Cruise! Ha! Speaking Of A Cruise. Hope Your Iceland Cruise Is Enjoyable! Again Gorgeous Yard And Home! Stay Safe!💖🥂
Classy and beautiful yard, Jim! Keep up the good work and enjoy the years ahead!
The yard looks great Jim! You’ve got a beautiful place there - well deserved too, hope you’re enjoying it !
Love the way you call it a back yard. It’s a massive and very beautiful garden/ parkland. ❤
Beautiful home Jim, love it! Great to see you reaping the rewards of your years of hard work. Love the river bed look with the trees.
Great yard, wait until those trees mature you’ll be raking until Christmas.
Great Yard! Looks stunning mate
Beautiful!! Home, landscaping, and yard
You leave it beautiful! Great job
That explains the lack of train videos. However, don't overdo. Pace yourself.
Thanks for the tour
Bob
Lovely❤
Living the dream, can't wait to see the trees grow up :) Take care!
Wow beautiful
You now have a peach tree!
A peach tree has pink peach blossoms and green peach tree leaves on the branches and you can pick the peaches from the peach tree.
You can also plant seeds from the peaches to grow new peach trees!
Also the peach tree in your backyard reminds me of Master Oogway's Sacred Peach Tree Of Heavenly Wisdom in the first Kung Fu Panda movie!
I am retiring and in an apartment, so I can travel more!😀 Thanks for the videos.
That looks so peaceful hope everything goes as well as it looks
Awesome! Sounds like you are keeping yourself plenty busy, all while enjoying yourself.
I love the new and improved version of the Zim sign of Zim's Corner!❤🇺🇸
I will see the new and improved Zim sign in the new G scale model train videos in the future!🛤🇺🇸🌐🚂🚃
The Zim sign is kind of like Tidmouth Sheds in the Thomas and Friends franchise that goes from old to new!👍
Two apple trees and two bearing apple trees in the garden.
There are 73 trees in the front and backyard of the house in Washington state.
That is a lot of trees!
As always, I am Thomas Comeau and I will see the replies from you, Jim Zim!
Now you have a peach tree, berry patches and new trees to replace the burnt trees in a bad heat wave in 2021 last year.
The red maple trees have grown up.
You moved on to Plan B if you want to change the way your backyard and front yard looks.
The Spurce tree where the robins were having their babies was still healthy enough.
The tomatoes drop seeds and the seeds can grow in to new tomatoes.
Some of the plants drop seeds and the seeds can grow in to new plants so you don't have to plant them again and again.
Your property is beautiful.
Wait until you see it this year... after the landscaping has grown even more.
I'll do a new version of this video this summer, so everyone can see the progress.
thanks for the tour!!
Beautiful yard Jim! Looking forward to your cruise videos! We’re driving to Atlanta tomorrow to fly to Iceland on Friday. Viking baby!
Great job. Beautiful
It looks amazing!!!
Thanks!
You should take a look at the new version of this video, which shows how the yard looks about a year later.

Beautiful place!
You sweet man. That was a wonderful video.
Informative 👍
great property good luck with everything love your videos
Nice backyard and garden Jim Zim.
great video
Very impressive, Jim. We have Japanese Red Maples here in CT, and I can tell you they are among the slowest growing trees around. But beautiful when they get larger. When do you ever have time for the cruising!
This was cool
Looks awesome. I'm trying to go with less green and artificial turf . Just takes lot of Water in this drought.
I REALLY enjoyed having a cherry tree and an apple tree on my Washington State property. Had you considered a fruit bearing tree for your and Kellyns enjoyment? I recommend it.
really good video man
Gorgeous yard beautifully done you will have the luckiest dog on the planet!
Thanks! Yes, we do have a very lucky dog now!
If you have a few minutes, you might want to take a look at a newer version of this video, shot one year later to show how things had changed after another year.

You sound like my family 😂 Just your vibe and opinions and hobbies/ jobs
that garden is incredible, lots of work tho!
This is exactly what people in retirement should be doing. Will add years to your life. Can I ask where you bought the Amur Maple? Regards from WSU grad class of '78.
My family owns a few lots I thought I wanted to build on the 1 acre from what I see the POV of a half of an acre is ridiculously huge. Even .25 acres could be worked with just depends on what we want I guess.
Your neighbor must have a really big RV to need a building that large! At the farm we have a 30'x40' shed we built a few years back to store the Combine in, and while I'm not sure how tall it is, I know the combine itself is 13' to the top of the grain tank and the doorway is at least another 4-5 feet taller than that. After seeing this video, I can understand where you see that building as just a big eyesore. Those trees can't grow quick enough! I can't say there's much problem with privacy here in the corner of nowhere where I live, although I'm one of those people who thinks that if you can't go to the bathroom off the front porch, the neighbors are too close. Really nice property, Jim!
looks like a gov't structure like a decent hospital in Florida
Just gorgeous❤. Maybe you could get your neighbors to paint a beautiful mountains and trees mural on that monstrosity 😊
Take a look at a newer version of this video, which I shot one year later to show how things had changed after a year:

Hi Jim. I love a Japanese maple - or Acer as we sometimes say in the UK.
Hi nice house
Half acre is big!
Nice landscaping, it’s all so pristine, may I offer a suggestion. The trees along the wall look as if they are planted too close as are the arborvitae. My parents did something similar and wound up pulling up trees and rearranging them after a few years. Better to do it now while they’re small than wait until the job requires equipment. Tree saplings should be planted based on the largest size you envision them, I’d say full grown however many people like to prune and keep them at a set heigh and width. Just my 2 cents.
Actually, I planted them "too close" on purpose. Remember that the #1 purpose of the trees is to create a giant view-blocker so that I won't have to look at the neighbor's houses and especially "the monstrosity". So, I want them close together so that they grow in to a giant hedge of trees, completely blocking the view. All I want to see is trees. Now, you're absolutely right that those trees are really planted too close for the long term. I know that. I need them to block the views as soon as possible, so I want them too close for now. When the day comes that they are just way too close to each other... I'll chop down every other one if I have to. But the top priority is for them to all grow together as quickly as possible so that I don't have to look at the neighbor's houses any longer than I have to!
I would use a projector on the eye sore....movie night
Don’t forget to do the train track around the backyard and garage and the whole house if you can besides your wife’s office
Cool
Does the 1/2 acre include the house sitting on it or is it just the yard part? I'm new to land. Because a 1/2 acre looks big here.
1/2 acre is the entire property, including the part that the house sits on.
Now you have a little more time to buy more trains for your collection if you have space that is.
Did you see the one about the bears that fished for salmon and left carcasses in the forest? the area with all the fish kill= trees were 3 times bigger the the rest of the area. Just a thought for all the trees in general
Forgive me for saying this but holy faack your yard would make hank hill cry tears of joy
Jim your yard looks good but it’s just too much work for a retiree!!!
It's the kind of work I enjoy doing, so it's not a problem for me!
The first thing I'll do when it starts to become a problem will be to buy a riding lawn mower. But at this point, I don't mind that it takes me about an hour to mow the lawns. I don't even mind pulling weeds, because the yard looks so good without them! It just takes a little effort every day to stay ahead of it. That's really the fun part of my day now.
For me ( retired around the same time as you ) I don't want any part of yard work of gardens of any kind mowing weeding ,snow blowing . I'm done with that. Were building in a active adult community outside of Charleston SC .They mow trim and maintain the pools hot tubs ect .They have 12000 sq club house amphitheater for summer concerts and events ,Bocce ball, Pickle ball on and on with things to do. Hugh fitness center .And coffee house , bar ... That's my idea of retirement .But hey Jim everyone's different That's what makes the world go around. Enjoy your retirement it will go by quickly so enjoy the things you love to do.
The sad thing we gotta do this went we get old😭
Time to build a permanent outdoor layout!
I absolutely love your back yard.. looks amazing.. i wonder how much a property like that cost..
About $650,000
@@JimZim gotcha.. n thank you for replying..
@@JimZim is the half acre just the backyard or is it including the front yard and where the house sits as well.? Just bought a house on a half acre. Thanks! 🇺🇸
The entire lot... including the front yard, driveway, side yards, back yard, and the space the house sits on.
By the way, be sure to take a look at a video tour of the yard made one year after the one you saw here. It shows what worked, what didn't, and how much things grew. th-cam.com/video/l9gDQbddJdE/w-d-xo.html
I'm a land scaper too.
Hey jim we are neighbors.
Hey jim Zim
And of course the backyard is where you put your trains
5:18 your welcome 😉
Is the half acre just the grass part?
what’s smaller them 1/2 acre looking for a house with big land in the city of Riverside Ca
😁
7:11 sponsored by Fedex "the world almost on time"
set up. your trains please
My almost 4 year old peach and apple trees have not grown 1 single fruit 😫
(A one-year-later reply)
Does it get windy there in the spring time where you live? That could knock any blossoms off. Also, most apple trees require pollinators... so, if you haven't planted the right type of other apple tree near yours, it won't bear fruit.
lol - "the monstrosity" - good idea about the trees!
Do you prefer Washington or California?
Washington, by far! My life is so much better now.
So is the backyard a 1/2 acre or the whole property is 1/2 acre?
The entire property is 1/2 acre
Is the grass real??
I wouldn't be watering it if it was fake grass, would I?
How many square feet is your home?
2700 sq ft
Don't plant trees near your drain field roots are no good
Not a fan of the Japanese maples.
This is the most boomer thing I've ever seen

That is totally in your control, not mine. Go to my channel, and turn off the little bell icon for notifications. Once you do that, you will no longer get notifications when I post a new video.
@@JimZim Maybe they mean that they are not getting notifications of your videos. There is a problem with TH-cam and some subscriptions have been cancelled. My friends and I have found this to be seemingly random and have needed to unsubscribe and then re subscribe to rectify the problem. BTW your garden is amazing and something to be proud of.
