Tales from Down Under! (Lake Michigan Spearfishing) (SHIP WRECK!) (HUGE SCHOOLS OF WALLEYE)

  • In this video I take a trip to Muskegon, Michigan to Spearfish the North break wall and stumble across an old ship wreck known as the Henry Cort, which sank in late November of 1934 trying to enter the Muskegon channel! You can see some of the large interior mechanical parts such as the coal burners and some kind of a gear for the propellers?? Either way, it was really cool and lots of walleye and small mouth bass seemed to like hanging around it. I shot some nice drum and gave some fish to some fellow anglers on the break wall. One of the coolest dives I've been on so far no doubt! More videos coming soon! Make sure to like, subscribe and share if you like what you see!! Thanks for watching!!

    Thanks for sharing your experience with the cold water with great viz! You would've had an easy time putting some walleye filets in the freezer if the state allowed.
    I live in a part of the Pacific Northwest where smallmouth bass were decimating our sturgeon, steelhead, plus chinook and coho salmon populations returning from the sea. In order to assist salmon, the size and limit restrictions were eliminated. Imagine what good things could be done to help other folks or families in need! Not sure how long it'll be in effect, but my knee replacement will hopefully let me get back to the outdoors activities I love and dearly miss. 🥴

    I used to snorkle years ago on my favorite fresh water lake here in Northern Mi. I used to find a big old bass sitting in top a 55 gallon drum off the diving platform in a brush pile made from locals who dump branches on the ice just before spring thaw. I would pet that big ole bass's tummy. No one could ever catch him. He was lazy and preferred going into shore at night to feed. I always enjoyed swimming among the fishes.

    • @notmyname9625
      @notmyname9625 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      he wasnt lazy he was smart. He didnt live long enough to grow that big for no reason. As bass get older n bigger they become smarter and learn to be more selective about there food. Only eating prey deemed worthy for the amount of energy expended to catch them. What you described is typical big bass behavior and without using those tactics these huge bass likely wouldnt be able to grow that big. Its the reason i stopped trying to target trophy bass actually. I'm not necessarily against the trend of big swimbaits n stuff like that to each his own but after learning how much riskier being caught is for the big ones i just felt like i should stop targeting them like that. I'm no Roland Martin im just a regular guy fishing by myself most of the time i dont need to catch giants anymore im perfectly content with whatever i can catch. Although i still do get excited when i hook a big one i cant lie i just dont target them exclusively.

      Some days are better than others with the waves but for sure not having anything much bigger than 10ft. The biggest difference is the biodiversity in fish and reefs. @@hellosweetheart3350 fishery Management is important. However, even if spearfishing were allowed it would account for a microscopic amount of the total take. The catch rate for spearfishing walleye is probably a little less than fishing for them. I do both

    • @purelymispearfishingdiving6278
      @purelymispearfishingdiving6278  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hellosweetheart3350 that couldn’t be anymore of an inaccurate statement. It’s simply Bc there’s such a small community of (speargunner’s) that exist in this state and none of them actually took the proper steps to get the fisheries division to make more table worthy game fish available. Dr. Herbst is the aquatic species affairs unit manager and he made it very clear that the resource could absolutely, unequivocally support our method of harvest at the same rate as hook and line anglers. We’ve put together a proposal Which will be voted on by the NRC this summer when they finish reviewing it with the warm and cold water resource steering committees. The warm water committee already voted majority in favor (11-4) of the proposal adding walleye, pike and lake trout to the species list. So expect to see that change in the 2022 regulations 👌🏻

      I don’t have one but the coldest I’ve dove in with my 5mm was 42 degrees for about an hour or so. Wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t like super fun lol but I might invest in a 7mm for the early spring to try for burbot and white fish in Lake Huron

    I'm surprised your channel hasn't blown up with subscribers! This is some amazing video showing some nice sized walleye! This just got me excited to get out and start jigging.
    I also have a great idea for you, have a friend cast some crank baits from shore as your chilling with the walleyes and see how enticed they are with lures. Maybe switch it up with some jigs and spoons. I would love to see that!

    Are you not breathing for the length of times you're under water??? !!! Holy cow.

    Here's a great tip for staying warm! Boil water with sand (same volume). Carefull fill a 1 gallon zip lock. Insert in wetsuit in front but depending on time of boil to trip time it will likely still be too hot so you may have to mix in cold water a bit so you don't get burned. I have done this with just water but still had to use a weight belt. With sand not as much weight belt needed.
    Water and silica can hold heat for an extremely long time.
    Instead of shivering you can actually be very comfortable as the waters swishes around in your wet suit. It can make an otherwise miserable dive very pleasurable and it costs next to nothing. You could even make it hotter and wrap it in a second layer of something but it could risk getting you burned.
