I’m not a fashion photographer but every time Tyra shoots, I think, okay, all she’s gotta do here is get the model in focus (and even then that doesn’t happen sometimes!) she’s in a perfectly curated environment for her photos and a ton of the artistry of the shot is happening in post. Tyra’s photos often have cool angles and are framed in an interesting way, but the framing could be part of post and after so many years of modeling, I should hope Tyra knows what the camera angle should be (she’s certainly told the models as much). As a photog, the ultimate success of the picture is on me. Light isn’t hitting the girl’s face right? I need to move the light or better direct the girl. Model’s pose isn’t working? I need to fix it! I’m the one who can see it! The general attitude that the picture is good or bad solely based upon the model’s effort is ridiculous
When you do your video on model books, can you go over what type of clients could want more creative shoots like this? I'm not a photographer. Not a model. Just genuinely curious if there's a market for it :). Thanks! Looking forward to that video.
In my experience, creative pictures like these are really only liked when trying to book similar work, or if it was a part of some big campaign that the client would recognize. And even then, people want a blank canvas. They want a model that they can mold into what they want, not a fully realized concept. I can't wait for her video on this! It'll help a LOT of model hopefuls.
@@Souperman99 This was what I was thinking about it. In general, I think ANTM was an awful representation of what modeling is actually like. Sure there are themed shoots but more often than not, those themes are just in the background and props while the model is supposed to be showing off the clothes or a product. There definitely are more artistic shoots but those would not be the bulk of what they'd be doing. While they may be able to use a couple of the ANTM shoots in their portfolio, mostly the ones where they actually were promoting a product, to show what the can do, most of them would be more suited in the photographers portfolio showing off the concept.
I feel like in the first videos reacting to ANTM, you were careful to not step on toes or offend and now you’re like “TYRA” and I love it. Also your hair looks particularly great today
I actually quite like Allison's look. She's a fluffy bird. Part of her birdyness is shown with that necklace-many birds love to collect shiny things like can tabs. The hair looks like a bird's nest. The eye makeup going over the nose made her eyes look big like an owl and her nose like a little beak. I mean, it's certainly not fashion but you can see the theme of birds in the styling
Ok but as a Brazilian and an art student I think their hair/makeup/costume were gorgeous, to me it was an amazing mix between our traditional indigenous face painting and the patterns on wild birds
I know that you cannot do the same types of videos like these because of possible language barriers, but I'd be super curious for you to look at the results of photoshoots in Germany's Next Topmodel and see if it's any different to the overall experiences to the American version. if those are more usable for the models later on or not, stuff like that. :)
2:00 So I'm two minutes in and I'm already like "wait, what??" Ray saying "So we are in the middle of the brazilian jungle..." is one of the most not specific descriptions ever. I'm brazilian and my reaction to that is "Which brazilian jungle? Brazil isn't just a giant jungle, it's a whole continental country. And there is a few different forests here. You're really not giving me a name? Wow." They could have just said "we're in the middle of a jungle" and it would make no difference...
@@grantmegan91 Yes, but then we wouldn't have gotten to see Tyra have a ridiculous overreaction to a moth fly near her and then *insist* it was a bat. Brightly colored. In the daytime.
I see Tyra took inspiration from her mother (who's also a photographer). Her mother photography is always either black and white, or sepia tone. Also, i'm, interested to see your reaction to Tyra photography in Cycle 10 Episode 11 I think the photos are cool (although i think its quite under exposure). But i would love to hear your analysis :D
I thought it's because of cheap and ridiculous styling during those photoshoots. You know, Tyra loves saving as much money as she can and do a maximum profit from the show, so black and white pictures can hide different mistakes about makeup, non-matching colours and so on.
It wasn't cause of this tho, they already had Brazil as destination and I think from a previous shot that they went there, Natalie's or Fo's elimination I think
To be fair a lot of shows get money from the tourism industries from high travel destinations. They could’ve had a lot of the stuff for the Brazil trip comped
with regard to tyra's empathy when it comes to caridee vs allison- i'm hoping that since allison was in a later cycle, that the caridee incident taught HER as well that she needs to let these girls know that speaking up when you need a moment isn't weakness. at least, one could hope. i watched a ton of cycles after this but i'm not sure if i remember someone being eliminated for asking for a breather after that.
Wiggling your ears is actually genetics. If a person has the genetic trait, they will be able to wiggle their ears but after practice, otherwise a person without the genetic trait will not be able to wiggle their ears.
I do appreciate that Tyra does give direction when she'e shooting. Mr. J, Nigel, and really most of the guest photographers just complain, and then after the fact in their 1x1 interview gossip about what the model SHOULD have done.
wiggling ears is genetically determined. some people can do it, some people can't. There are a few things like that that vary from person to person. imo it's really stupid of them to blame these models for not doing something they straight up might not be able to do and can never learn. On that note, there's also a wide-ish variation in the amounts of muscles in the face that people have/can control. That's one of the reasons some people are a lot more animated than others, etc. Turns out not every human was made the exact same, go figure.
I'm looking forward to that next video. Because I remember when you did your interview with keenyah, she said she had to basically build up her portfolio from scratch after the show ended
Tyra worked with Steven Meisel once in her entire career (2008), in comparison to many of her peers who worked with him on multiple occasions. However, she sure did bring it up too many times on the show.
Question! In professional photo shoots, do photographers allow the models to see the photographs so that models can get an idea of how they’re doing? Mr. J can see the photographs as they’re being taken, would they allow the models to also look through the photos and discuss with the photographer what’s working and what’s not working?
I'm going to assume it depends on the photographer, but I work with a freelance photographer at the moment and she always shows the models how they look on film.
Honestly, if I'm in a situation where I can tether my camera to my laptop then I set it so we can both see the shots at a glance. If I can't I'll take a few shots then show the back of the camera
Jessica - "okay so what are your thoughts about it, lemme know in the comments" Me - *has no idea about photography but watches your videos cause you're the only person who actually hits straight facts and you're entertaining as well*
When I was 10, my mom (who is a photographer) would take me with her to work, sometimes. She'd been, say, hired to photograph a wedding; we'd be in the venue, after the ceremony but before the party, when mom needed to get the basic shots of the decor, cake, and so on. Often she'd hand me the camera, after taking the most important photos, and say something on the lines of "okay, give me a few more of the cake". I'd take the camera with all settings already adjusted, and take pictures of a thing in an already ideal light, and merrily return the camera. So, what I mean with all that is that Tyra has as much a claim to being a photographer as 10 year-old me (though, to be fair, I didn't have an assistant, and the camera used film, so the mistakes were limited). If that's the case, my resume needs updating.
But do you actually know that Tyra doesn't adjust the camera settings herself? Or that she had no part in setting up the shoot? Clearly she was already on location before the girl arrived so to pretend there is no way she was actually preparing the shoot seems of bad faith.
"the most my ears can do is have an infection" might be the funniest thing you've ever said lol "there's water here, why not in your eyes" is a contender

This particular shoot, if the end result was in colour would of been great for hair and make-up to have in their books. Although I'd of cropped it closer. There are many considerations with shooting such as who the client is. Is it a fashion brand? If so what sort of clothing depends of the model I'd want to use. Yoga clothes? You ideally need someone with a great range of movement either a dancer or someone who is adept at yoga. It's all about showcasing the clothes. Is the client a makeup artist? Then it's all about showcasing their skills. Is the shoot to develop the models portfolio? Then eye-catching enough to stand out and different from their previous work but tone down the hair and make-up, it's all about what the model can do. I hope that added some clarity.
I remember watching this episode and Celia getting sent home for being too "old" looking which i thought was wild!!! Shes so pretty!! The stigmas on this show are insane
I love that Tyra was like. Ah yes, it's very important for the models to be able to dissociate heavily. That's why we put them through so many upsetting situations. 😇
I disagree with you about Tyra having assistants. I've shot in the middle of the woods before and it's quite overwhelming, exhausting and potentially dangerous, especially when you are trying to move around and get interesting angles. One false move and you can really just drop your camera. So I think assistants are always useful :)
Also the more models you have to shoot in a short time the more things you need to delegate because you will not have the mental energy to focus on so many different things.
@@anasdomain9994 regardless if she thinks it’s bad or not, I still disagree with how she approached it. « Just peasant things » was really out of place when assistants are truly helpful and should be appreciated.

HI Jessica! Someone sent me your video. As you know the business is fake. You get in the field and take expert shots through heart and passion. Your sweetness and compassion for people in sharing your work and being so open about your technique shows the depth and character you have and heart that came through a difficult past and strict upbringing of your mother. Sometimes the put downs you experienced growing up only softened your edges. You're a soft strong amazing woman.
I totally get what you're saying about them being in control of the "styling" and "light"-and I am split on how they should handle it. On one hand, I think it's good they don't "fix" it because they are teaching the girls how to work in less than ideal situations. On the other hand, I don't think that these are things they should bring up in the critiques that are not the girls' faults.
Exactly. These could have been teachable moments to review with the girls. It feels like they literally learned nothing on this show. It’s always been disappointing.

Many fashion and beauty photographers working for high luxury brands like Dior do not edit their photos. That does not make them less legit in the industry.
I just gonna say, thanks to her i've learned about fotography and how to post and all that. Im really happy and grateful! 💜✨ .... i can wiggle my ears, but idk how
lol i actually do pull my ears back sometimes for photos when i want a more "fierce" expression, it does lift your cheekbones a bit and if you also clench your jaws at the same time it can give you a more hard/masculine looking face! at least it does that for me, so that's why i'd do it haha for more androgynous/powerful looks it's great! I have always been able to move my ears, and i trained myself to move my eyebrows independently from each other, it helps a lot for posing and just general facial control in photos ^^ I learned to do this looong before i started modelling though, it just happened to work out well in the end 😂

@@arcaderat1613 both are right
I feel like in the first videos reacting to ANTM, you were careful to not step on toes or offend and now you’re like “TYRA” and I love it.
When Tyra said "I'm sensitive to other models pain" LMAO SINCE WHEN
Ok but as a Brazilian and an art student I think their hair/makeup/costume were gorgeous, to me it was an amazing mix between our traditional indigenous face painting and the patterns on wild birds
When Tyra said, "You look stunning!" Jessica, your face had me dying!
I know that you cannot do the same types of videos like these because of possible language barriers, but I'd be super curious for you to look at the results of photoshoots in Germany's Next Topmodel and see if it's any different to the overall experiences to the American version. if those are more usable for the models later on or not, stuff like that. :)
I would love that
The new season start next week
2:00
So I'm two minutes in and I'm already like "wait, what??"
Ray saying "So we are in the middle of the brazilian jungle..." is one of the most not specific descriptions ever. I'm brazilian and my reaction to that is "Which brazilian jungle? Brazil isn't just a giant jungle, it's a whole continental country. And there is a few different forests here. You're really not giving me a name? Wow." They could have just said "we're in the middle of a jungle" and it would make no difference...
it’s like saying “We’re in the middle of the North American forest!” sir what
And they could have done this whole thing back home because you can only see their man made nest and nothing else 😅
@@grantmegan91 Yes, but then we wouldn't have gotten to see Tyra have a ridiculous overreaction to a moth fly near her and then *insist* it was a bat. Brightly colored. In the daytime.
I am Brazilian and I thought the exact same thing! Thank you!
Eles estavam literalmente no Brasil nesse photoshoot, por isso ela menciona dessa forma
I see Tyra took inspiration from her mother (who's also a photographer). Her mother photography is always either black and white, or sepia tone.
Also, i'm, interested to see your reaction to Tyra photography in Cycle 10 Episode 11
I think the photos are cool (although i think its quite under exposure). But i would love to hear your analysis :D
Oh I just saw that episode yesterday, I agree, it was a little more on the underexposed side
You are very right on Tyra using the filters! And what annoys me is how the models have all these colorful outfits and makeup looks
I thought it's because of cheap and ridiculous styling during those photoshoots. You know, Tyra loves saving as much money as she can and do a maximum profit from the show, so black and white pictures can hide different mistakes about makeup, non-matching colours and so on.
Tyrant probably thinks she's being artistic 😂
Honestly apart from the last shot, that “nest” could have been in a studio. Why bother going to Brazil for that 😂
It wasn't cause of this tho, they already had Brazil as destination and I think from a previous shot that they went there, Natalie's or Fo's elimination I think
To be fair a lot of shows get money from the tourism industries from high travel destinations. They could’ve had a lot of the stuff for the Brazil trip comped
There are so many amazing girls on top model, but Alison is my all time favorite!! She’s such a doll
with regard to tyra's empathy when it comes to caridee vs allison- i'm hoping that since allison was in a later cycle, that the caridee incident taught HER as well that she needs to let these girls know that speaking up when you need a moment isn't weakness. at least, one could hope. i watched a ton of cycles after this but i'm not sure if i remember someone being eliminated for asking for a breather after that.
Wiggling your ears is actually genetics. If a person has the genetic trait, they will be able to wiggle their ears but after practice, otherwise a person without the genetic trait will not be able to wiggle their ears.
Allison is so adorable! I wanted her to win so bad
I do appreciate that Tyra does give direction when she'e shooting. Mr. J, Nigel, and really most of the guest photographers just complain, and then after the fact in their 1x1 interview gossip about what the model SHOULD have done.
"Just wiggle your ears"
Literally not all people can do that. Like physically
I’ve never seen Tyra so relatable than when she screamed at a moth.
wiggling ears is genetically determined. some people can do it, some people can't.
Jessica - "okay so what are your thoughts about it, lemme know in the comments"
Me - *has no idea about photography but watches your videos cause you're the only person who actually hits straight facts and you're entertaining as well*
This commentary has turned into grade A comedy gold.
'where are the eggs? I don't see any eggs in there' why did that make me laugh so hard?
Allison blushing after Tyra calls her pretty is so pure. Allison deserves the world
"remember when i did ummm u know, that photoshoot with ummm steven.... you know, steven meisel... for italian vogue"
- Tyrannasaurus
After these reactions I feel like Germany's next Topmodel is high quality content 😂
Now I need to go watch 😅😂
Would love to see you're commentary on season where they had both male & female models. (Esp with my fav model Nile DiMarco)
Yessssss I loved Nile
Tyra started a whole show just to show her own modeling shots 🤣
I actually really love the styling for this shoot! The hair and makeup especially!
"the most my ears can do is have an infection" might be the funniest thing you've ever said lol "there's water here, why not in your eyes" is a contender
THIS VIDEO IS SO FUNNY you are truly a comedian 😭💗💗 i do love how you take it seriously and critique the judges for being rude, but can also laugh and make fun of the absurdity of it all! 👌
so you're telling me they traveled to the jungle to make them look like Sh!t Birdie Owl tetradactyl. This makes me wonder if this was last minute like hurry throw some ideas at a wall lol and Tyra is over here like I'm bored let me shoooot.
Allison is probably the most memorable model in the entire series. She's just stunning
I used to love the show and think that the concepts were really cool and that Tyra knew what she was talking about now looking back LMFAO! 😂😂😂
Can’t wait for you video on why they can’t use photos after the show. I could see the editing, lack of direction, and more why it wouldn’t support them later but I’d love a more in depth opinion!!
@@ianmills9266 I value your reply, thank you so much!
I remember watching this episode and Celia getting sent home for being too "old" looking which i thought was wild!!! Shes so pretty!! The stigmas on this show are insane
Tyra could balearly be bothered holding the camera, she definitely didn't edit the pics 😂
“There’s water here, why not in your eyes?” Killed me XD
I love that Tyra was like. Ah yes, it's very important for the models to be able to dissociate heavily. That's why we put them through so many upsetting situations. 😇
I disagree with you about Tyra having assistants. I've shot in the middle of the woods before and it's quite overwhelming, exhausting and potentially dangerous, especially when you are trying to move around and get interesting angles. One false move and you can really just drop your camera. So I think assistants are always useful :)
Also the more models you have to shoot in a short time the more things you need to delegate because you will not have the mental energy to focus on so many different things.
She didn’t say it was bad tho she was just weirded out that she had one guy just to hold the camera straps lol
@@anasdomain9994 regardless if she thinks it’s bad or not, I still disagree with how she approached it. « Just peasant things » was really out of place when assistants are truly helpful and should be appreciated.
@@zachphan1651 she was just being sarcastic though 😆 she said in another video that most photographers have assistants to help set up lighting so she’s not against it
Jessica your comments today were on fire! Youre Mr Jay impression was hilarious and everything you said was on point.
Chileee, the way they put these girls down 😩💔
"That's how I know she's never had a c-stand fall on her."
When I tell you I felt this in my soul
That picture of Allison is still one of my favorites of the entire show
I love how Tyra and Jay said they thought Teyana’s photoshoot would be bad because of conditions THEY had control over. Lol “she’s wearing too many clothes and there’s so much makeup” how about you change her outfit and quickly adjust her makeup?? It’s like they wanted her to fail.
She give the best photo of the season and her most iconic photp on her pottfolio.
perfect timing with my coffee :) I actually liked the idea of this shoot XD when it came out
Tbh the 1st assistant during a photographic shooting is responsible to hold the camera while the photographer is not shooting be the camera is heavy af (most photographers will just put it on table, it depends). Of course the 1st assistant does also light design.
“ In the jungle, the mighty jungle “ kept on playing in my head during this whole video 😭😭😭😭😭😂
Jessica thank you for these commentaries, it really made the day. Especially the voiced over for Mr. Jay had me rolling.
Other items photo suggestions from this cycle are the first two:
- The let’s make a statements photoshoot: “protect lost innocence” (watch Tyra explain the message she was trying to convey at panel) through childhood games with extras (not the other contestants)
- “Group” shoot where they have to a bit of DIY lighting. 3 other girl were the shot with the highlighted girls in the center/main focus, where the main girl was given a few light and how to light themselves.
Omg you are so hysterical!!! As a fellow photographer I totally agree with your assessments of the shoots and the final shots. You have a new fan ❤❤❤
This is my favorite episode. Loved it! 🤣🤣🤣 Never stop making these commentaries. 😍🙌🏾
You are literally the voice in my head when I watched ANTM back in the days 😂
.... And I can wiggle my ears, but it’s not giving me a facelift, I’m to old 😅
This was my favorite photo shoot. I like couldn’t wait for her to see the photos at the end
Around 13min in your pink Mr.Jay skit had me rolling 🤣. That was amazing, you are amazing.
YAY! this is my favorite photo shoot of the whole run of the show!
Critique the things that the girls can control. At worst say if you're in this type of situation, try doing blah blah.
Exactly. These could have been teachable moments to review with the girls. It feels like they literally learned nothing on this show. It’s always been disappointing.
“You see how the light is coming from this direction? Turn your face like this to catch that light” easy. That’s what this show should have been doing
-"CAN YOU FLY???"
OMG, I cracked 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You are hilarious, but respectful tho. Love your critics
Tara and Mr Jay at the beginning remind me of the camp counselors in the Addams Family Values film
I just watched that movie last night and now I can’t unsee it 😂😂😂
You crack me up! I love how you point out each time....they can't put that in their book. 🤣 Over explain situation Tyra....why couldn't you say....you're a wild creature in their natural environment.
If Tyra can’t hold her own camera strap during a shoot, she sure as hell didn’t edit those photos 😂
(ps I too love Allison, one of my all time faves from the show 🤩)
Many fashion and beauty photographers working for high luxury brands like Dior do not edit their photos. That does not make them less legit in the industry.
You hit the nail on the head in my opinion. Spot on.
Say what you will, but Allison's photo is one of the best in the show's history.
I just gonna say, thanks to her i've learned about fotography and how to post and all that. Im really happy and grateful! 💜✨
.... i can wiggle my ears, but idk how
Omg your hair looks amazing today!
This Allison’s photo is one of the best imo of ANTM History.
lol i actually do pull my ears back sometimes for photos when i want a more "fierce" expression, it does lift your cheekbones a bit and if you also clench your jaws at the same time it can give you a more hard/masculine looking face! at least it does that for me, so that's why i'd do it haha for more androgynous/powerful looks it's great! I have always been able to move my ears, and i trained myself to move my eyebrows independently from each other, it helps a lot for posing and just general facial control in photos ^^ I learned to do this looong before i started modelling though, it just happened to work out well in the end 😂
I love your way off looking at things very true and very real. great job keep it up girl we love it.
"The most my ears can do is have an infection" 😂 I can relate to that.
"Have you ever done constructinon?
Okay. We're gunna build a treehouse after this."
Boi I wouldn't 👏put👏it👏past👏them👏
Tyra screaming that she needs help is the realest thing she's ever said.
I'm obsessed with these 🤣🤣
