oh yes 100% did you also notice that the people they put in the top had the least amount of the blurring effect? Jaslene (idk how to spell her name) barely had any done while the bottom girls had so much editing you couldn't even see the background
My mom has this theory that they pick who they want to win at the beginning of the season based on what the customer (I.e the modeling agency) is looking for. And all the challenges and photo shoots are meant specifically for them.
Yeah I'm a designer too and the blur effect was all over the place in it's intensity (WHY WAS FELECIA'S PHOTO IN A WHITE VORTEX?!) yet not for the winner of the shoot. It honestly looks purposeful as even a amateur wouldn't single out 1 photo to lessen the effect if they thought all needed a blur to begin with regardless of loss of detail.
My biggest peeve about tyra was that she would always preach about how toxic the industry can be if you don't give into the demands of the photographer or designer but proceeds to continue that by making them go these awful experiences.
Absolutely. As much as I despise Tyra she was at the peak of her celebrity and influence at the time and could have used it to really make changes in the modeling word but instead chose to exploit these girls and ridicule them.
More like "I used to walk to school three whole blocks, why can't you walk 10 miles in a blizzard with no shoes on when I ask you to for entertainment? Because of this you will never amount to anything in your life. But also girl power."
It's awful. It's impossible to summarize political positions into a single photo, so of course it's going to become stereotypes if you want put a complex topic into a single frame. It sounds stupid even just thinking about it, I wonder how in hells name it got beyond paper! It's just like their biracial/bicultural/binational (or whatever they called it) photoshoot, you can't put a single culture into a picture frame, that's why there is such a thing as cultural festivals, much less two! They treat the models like they aren't people on this show...They have no choices, autonomy, and even the slightest bit of disagreeing from them, they are sent home. @@saadbunni I think it's bc the whole pro-vs-anti dichotomy of the other categories (pro-choice/pro-life, anti-fur/pro-fur, etc.) implies that gay marriage and straight marriage are opposites, which they are obv not.
exactly what i was thinking! 'its a wedding so there *must* be a dress and suit', like a lesbian couple can wear what they want but I think to really show the point they should have both been given dresses. And this might be an odd point but they gave the girl with the slightly broader face the suit, and one that I think made her seem more masculine by broadening the shoulders and stuff, and thus further emphasising that there must be a 'man' in the relationship. (I'm not saying she looks masculine, just that the suit wasn't the best on her)
All I can think about is some guy being like “for vegan we should have her hold animals make her look so loving and caring” and then another guy was like “Nahh just throw some fruit on her” 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I dont know if that actually scared people away from going vegan but it msde it look like every vegan is super into fruits and vegetables XD I didnt really get "vegan" as a theme but it looked more like "fruit salad" to me XD
Omg, I thought the vegetables was so weird. Vegan means so much more than just eating vegetables lol, and I'm not even vegan and I know that. I love a good meat buffet 🤣🤣🤣 But I would have loved it a lot better if she was modeling with a baby calf and a pot bellied pig

Several studies have been done on why and a majority of women have abortions due to financial situations or pressure from people around them. I want to see a future where we have eliminated all such elements for (pregnant) women, it is never the pregnancy itself that is the problem but the events around it. I believe that we as a society should focus on long-term solutions for women instead of abortions as a simple solution. I hope this helps you understand my point of view on the subject. “You’re attempting to blend into the background instead of popping out.” Uh yeah but you can blame the editor for that one I don’t think the model blurred herself like that 🙃🙃
What I have learned from the few ANTM that I have seen, is that apparently the problems caused by a bad photographer or the editing team are actually the model's fault 🙄
Jaslene’s death penalty photo is so iconic! The close up is perfection. Her brows and everything. I get chills with that photo and her high school one.
Jael actual passed away Dec. 4th 2018. She had many struggles. Including her addiction which she overcame only to be diagnosed with Breast Cancer. It was just too much for her already fragile body to handle. RIP beautiful.
They make it sound like Tyra is the biggest supermodel in the whole world, but I have never seen her in a magazine or her modeling in general. The only places I’ve seen her is in this show or the Tyra show lol.
She was actually a pretty big deal and it was "her show" in a way. However, looking back i definitely don't look up to her like I did when I was watching as a kid.
Well she is retired from modeling, even at the start of this so I think many of the target demographic for this show are to young to know much about her modeling career. My mom is as old as her and kind of remembers her though she didn't really pay attention to like, models and stuff.
Don't know which is more cringe: the concept or the photo editing. FYI, Jessica: When they mean "dead eyes", they mean they're not doing Tyra's "signature smize".
A theory as to why they always say “ you have dead eyes”to the new models. I think it’s simply so Tyra can make an entire episode and shoot dedicated to her Smize technique
@@Kairos_Akuma that is what I was thinking. What also gets me is that every time she asked how to portray the theme no one could give her an answer. So i feel it was one of the more damned if you damned if you don't themes of the day.
There's such a vast difference with how judging presents the bad photos as the models' fault and the reality, which I'm learning from you, that one photo is a group effort.

I was thinking the exact same thing watching this. Its really clear that target demographic was pre-teens because the concepts are pretty immature and basic. When I was young I thought these types of photoshoots were revolutionary because I didn't have a proper understanding of the issues surrounding them.
Love how they think Tyra Banks is a household name. No one in my family, nor my friends have ever known who she is. The only reason a select few of my friends know who she is is because of the video of her yelling at a girl
What on earth was this photo shoot. It’s criminalizing every belief it’s representing. There are obvious biases and it’s super messed up. These models deserve a choice in the matter.
@Nicky Iannis It doesn't make sense for her to be acting like a prisoner since she's not dressed like one and wouldn't make any sense at all for her to model like a prisoner either. She's pro-life sentence so she should have had Jaslene's set or lethal injection set and handcuffing herself there to prevent the death penalty from happening or something along those lines.
I thought girl was meant to be the prison guards or something. And what was that stuff about 2 kinds of convicts? There must be some prisoners who are just keeping their heads down and hoping to get time off for good behaviour.

I think it was the aim. It’s more “parodying” the issue than actually promoting it. They always say “have fun with it”, you don’t go speak on animal cruelty or deal penalty with the thought of “having fun with it”. To be fair I’m not even hating the concept. Doing the parodied exaggerated shot of a lot of issue to me is fine, though I haven’t finished the vid yet.

Jessica please react to some “good” photoshoots, I really wanna see your review about editing, concepts and stuff! I remember season 19 having some really nice shots!
And sometimes the comments are I think unfair. Remember this was from a long time ago. People aren’t as aware of issues as now. And your comments are so inane sometimes. Like questioning why one model had a noose as a prop when it was clearly said that she was supposed to be pro death penalty. Please don’t comment just because you feel like you have to comment on something 😅
The main message to the models in ANTM was compromise yourself at any cost for the picture. Honestly they were hoping to trigger someones personal trauma and turn it into drama. That was the concept.
This show makes me so GRATEFUL for Instagram. If Instagram didn't exist this show would still be relevant and more aspiring models will be subjected to the torture that is ANTM. I remember watching this show as a preteen like 12-13 and even then I was confused with the photoshoots and challenges these girls/guys were forced to do because I've never seen Victoria's Secret, Project Runaway, Vera Wang, and other fashion designers/shows/stores do THIS for their clothing, products, or accessories.
The girl for anti-fur literally asked and was being aggressive in the shoot then Jay told her be more high fashion..... now they say anti-fur people are aggressive???? I don't understand 😕
Can we also discuss how Tyra always made sure she did her own version of every photoshoot and they would show it before the judging and all the contestant photos? 😂
And whenever it was some overly complicated difficult shoot her version was always way simpler, like if they had to hang in the air Tyra’s version would just be photoshopped in the air 🙄
Model: um yeah, that shoot was hard for me since my grandpa passed away the day we did it... Tyra: I’m right here with you, my cousins best friends brothers classmate grandpa passed away. But I still got through it.
karend169 She did once as a social experiment. From what I remember it wasn’t as dumb as the homeless thing. I remember it being a little intense. But I really don’t remember it that well so let’s fact check me! lol
Jael was an absolute angel. She legit changed lives. She took her past, overcame it, then used that experience to change the lives of others. It kinda hit me in that intro when Mr. Jay said to the 13 ladies that they could be someone’s inspiration and role model. Jael was without a doubt a role model to a lot of the women we knew. Yet she was incredibly humble, kind, and welcoming to any new comers in our circle. She touched a lot of lives, both close to home and through the screen. And for the record, Jael passed away sober. She had multiple years of sobriety when she passed away.
If I was a model, and they gave me something that was way out of the comfort zone. I would leave. No way would I let my image be used for something I am against.
There’s also a power imbalance in the show, I guess. They’re meant to be “inferior” to the judges, who act like some sort of “mentor”? We all know they’re just being mean for no real reason. They can’t really just walk out and I feel bad for them. Walking out would be the same as giving up a chance that they (probably) feel is THE ticket to their desired lifestyle or career path.
RIGHT!?! I feel like your image is everything as a model, and you don't want that attached to anything that could be deemed negative... Like I know young models want to do anything to be put on the map, but you also don't want o kill your career before it can even start😬
As you should. I modeled from 13 - 20 years old and OFTEN said no to things. You should never force yourself to be comfortable if you’re genuinely not. I got offered a 19k contract but walked away because the agency told me to give up my faith, education, family and life for modeling/acting. I said “no thanks” and put myself through college instead 👌🏼
@@Dhdjksjsnsnsnnsnsna Totally agree. I actually used to go to modeling auditions/do some modeling back in the late 90's /2000's and it felt like this. I had others try to get me to do nude modeling too, which I refused to do, but there was still pressure. I am glad that now the models have more say than in the past.

They made the models pose for maternity shoots basically, fake baby bellies and all that. oh yes 100% did you also notice that the people they put in the top had the least amount of the blurring effect? Jaslene (idk how to spell her name) barely had any done while the bottom girls had so much editing you couldn't even see the background
My mom has this theory that they pick who they want to win at the beginning of the season based on what the customer (I.e the modeling agency) is looking for. And all the challenges and photo shoots are meant specifically for them.
You can also tell that they sometimes pick the worst pics for judging instead of the best ones for some people
@@alicine-sims8988 That explains it! Exactly what I was thinking!
She doesn't hold her own team accountable for their behavior
Absolutely. As much as I despise Tyra she was at the peak of her celebrity and influence at the time and could have used it to really make changes in the modeling word but instead chose to exploit these girls and ridicule them.
“You’re blending into the background instead of popping out” uhh they literally blended her into the wall.
Seriously, they made her and the wall beige, and then motion blurred her into the wall, and then critiqued her for blending into the wall hahaha

They're not even doing a fashion interpretation of these views. This is just stereotypes
My favorite part about this comment is that it could apply to, like, 80% of this show.
The black face just adds to the shittiness of it.
They treat the models like they aren't people on this show...They have no choices, autonomy, and even the slightest bit of disagreeing from them, they are sent home. If this type of thing is programmed in their head in regards to the modeling industry, they might put themselves in danger in the future. Oh...Tyra....
I'd say I like the aspect of a modeling show, but I crave professionalism and a realistic view of it. Like I wanna see something, that isn't clown behavior on behalf of Tyra and isn't blatantly offensive especially in terms of concepts. I agree with you fully though.

Which is honestly such bs. I have seen blue eyes that were pretty much soulless and brown eyes that sparkled and were so full of life and spirit. This show honestly got some weird standards
In this panel, I know they told Diana she had dead eyes, and her eyes are blue, it’s rare when they talk about models with blue eyes that have dead eyes, only ones I really remember that had blue eyes but went dead were Kathy (C6 Bald shoot), Diana (C8 Political shoot), Kara (C13 Scarf shoot), and Phil (C20 Nails Shoot)

(I'm not saying she looks masculine, just that the suit wasn't the best on her)
And they made sure the black model was the masculine one, because you can't have a black girl be prettier than a white girl...

@@feraldaisy6518 It's okay to ask, I also prefer not to start a war in the comments. I am pro-life because: I believe in life from the moment of conception and therefore everyone’s equal right to live. But I also try to see the reasons why abortions happen. Several studies have been done on why and a majority of women have abortions due to financial situations or pressure from people around them. I want to see a future where we have eliminated all such elements for (pregnant) women, it is never the pregnancy itself that is the problem but the events around it.
Like you had to be willing to go along with certain things to try and make it. I was a size 4 back then and I even had a photographer tell me I could still lose at least 5 pounds. I had others try to get me to do nude modeling too, which I refused to do, but there was still pressure. I am glad that now the models have more say than in the past.
I feel like almost every photoshoot aged like milk LMAO
omg hahahahaah
So did tyra imo
Woah don't bring cheese into this. Maybe veggies in the fridge though
To be honest I think the hairstyle/makeup episodes are ok, and they aged quite well.
Omg angry coconut I wasn't expecting to see you here-
“Buckets of blood” lol -it’s buckets of red paint because anti-fur people would splash red paint on people wearing fur at events or coming out of the store...
This whole show was just validation for Tyra. She literally acts like Big Brother ...
When I was younger I was so blinded by the show, thank you Jessica for going through these shoots and showing us the true reality about the industry.
Re watching this only makes me realize how much I don't like Tyra. I was addicted to this show only because I liked to see how the photos came out
Same here. I like the show only for the hair and makeup and photo shoots. The silly challenges and Tyra's overbearing presence were so unnecessary.
In one episode tyra told a girl experiencing hypothermia “you need to tell us when you’ve reached your limit” but in this she says “you have a fever? Suck it up you can’t be low energy”
This, its all power moves for Tyra. Girl cries, "Rejection happens all the time in this industry. You need to be strong enough to handle it."
Tiffany puts on a brave face. Tyra: "WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU!!!"
Monique is too sick to walk on a literally wobbling runway and decides to go back to the house. "In this industry you need to be able to tough it out despite being sick."
Carridee gets hypothermia bc her psoriasis meds make her more vulnerable to decreased temps: Tyra, "you need to listen to your body"
The photo shoot that still makes me mad is the pregnancy one. It was on season 24, absolutely they should have known to be sensitive to this topic! They made the models pose for maternity shoots basically, fake baby bellies and all that. One of the girls had a miscarriage previously, and just the whole thing was so distasteful and dismissive to women who have lost a baby, or who want to be pregnant and can't be. Ugh.
I love how you said instead of shaming people, educating them
I forgot about Tyra's pictures jammed into every episode overseeing the girls like a fashion-y Mao Zedong.
LMAO
Screaming at this comment aahahahha
😂😂
It made me think of 'Big Ape is watching you' on any Apex planet in the game Starbound lol. There were Big Ape posters everywhere.
Stopppppp hahahahahaha
Tyra is a walking contradiction. She’s the epitome of “Do as I say, not as I do” 🙄
Matter of fact, she's even been like "do as I say, but sometimes DON'T" on quite a few occasions.
“The girl that won’t stop talking...are you talking about the judges”
That killed me 😂
Wait. Who was the girl who didnt stop talking? Anti fur?
@@stutiarya I think it was Jael? They said she worried too much about winning because Girls would hate her. But it was one joke like "Don't You hate me please"
Again, the history of this show is not good with jokes models make
Found your videos very recently and I love how you show the difference in the pictures and give the right kind of feedback.
The thing I never get with some of the ANTM shoots is... where exactly do they expect this would be shown? Or for what? Especially if the goal is to become a huge fashion model...? lol
