@@pennywisethedancingclown2702 oh 100%, it's a sick joke that tyra has a " icon " status and enjoys a career putting out sub par work and reaping the benefits while the women and girls from this show suffered trauma on national television and couldn't even use the pictures they took on this show in their portfolios.
I decided to look her up. She's looking absolutely gorgeous. Married with 3 beautiful children and still modeling. Looks like she won in the end. Happy for her. She's thriving. ❤️
Most of the girls on ANTM all received modeling deals after leaving the show. If you even made it on the show it usually was enough to get your face noticed by someone.
Fun fact: Wenn I was a teenager decades ago I pointed out all that sexism and cruelty about the next topmodel shows. I was called "jealous of the beauty" and a crazy feminist. Good to know that other people see the gaslighting and sexism and cruelty at least NOW, in retrospect.
I stopped watching ANTM when they first started for the same reason. I felt horrible for the models and a lot of them were teens themselves. I internalised a lot of what the judges said and a lot of what they were saying could be summed up as, "put up and shut up or leave."
I LOVED this show back in the early 2000s (I think I was like 18 when it came out). So I apologize for rolling my eyes at people like you trying to point out the obvious. I'm SHOCKED watching them back now. It's no wonder that I focused so much of my life on my appearance and "needing" to be skinny!
Jessica! In an interview, Eugena explained that she offered to switch models with Jaeda and Mr J and production wouldn't allow it. I 100% believe that this was a set up to get rid of Jaeda and crush her confidence. I'd go as far as to say they purposefully told that guy to act that way to elicit a negative emotional response in Jaeda. She said ONE time that everyone at her school thought she was beautiful and they proceeded to dramatically cut her hair and remind her every chance they got that she's not the prettiest girl in school anymore/she can't just be a pretty face. It's diabolical.
I wrote something about the guy model being coached but more in a way of being antagonistic towards whoever picked him. But this makes a lot of sense. They may have taken aside whoever Jaeda picked and made him do it (or instructed all the guys beforehand to go for that). So many things I can't believe anyone would have done without getting instructed/paid for it
I found it interesting how Tyra scolded a model for making a homophobic comment, but she didn't have that same energy for a fellow black woman who was insulted to her face for being black. I agree with you that this all seemed like a set up. Eugenia said in an interview recently that she even offered to switch models but producers told her it wasn't allowed.
Not to make any excuses for Tyra because you are completely right. This video is from Season 7 of ANTM whilst the homophobic comment is from Season 21 and its very interesting to see that there is a trend recently of stop the hate etc but still feeling like it's performative by some people especially with the BLM, LGBTQ & other topics recently. Back in Season 7 which was mid/Late 2000s, it seemed like its a taboo to say anything of what you went through otherwise you might get shut down completely. I really am just stunned seeing the changes in society over the last 2 decades both good and bad.
I personally don't find it interesting/am not surprised, after Tyra perpetuated homophobia on this show multiple times. i.e. Telling a lesbian contestant not to wear her sexuality on her sleeve because Tyra is Black but not like "I'm Black, I'm Black, I'm Black." Not that it makes it more acceptable, but Tyra doesn't have integrity. End of story.
@Travis Lane Who said that she was racist? I see comments pointing out times she did not speak up about blatant racism, homophobia, and allowed black face on multiple occasions on this show even though she's the producer. These are facts about what happened on the show, not an assessment of her personal beliefs. If she isn't bigoted, she just routinely isn't willing to stand up for people who are acting in a bigoted way for whatever reason. I see speculation that these instances are because it adds drama to her show, I saw no accusation that she personally is racist, sexist, or homophobic.
As a Catalan woman myself, I'm laughing so much at the reading part. Jessica you did amazing! It says 'The only reason I had a serious relationship with my boyfriend is because I liked his photos from when he was a kid, and I wanted to see how our children would look like'. Doesn't even have anything to do with the deodorant add.
Also, is it me or are the cue cards written phonetically, and not like the words are actually written? (I learnt Catalan and Valencià as a child) it's throwing me off so bad.
It’s mind blowing that as a black woman herself, Tyra didn’t do anything about this 🤯 At the end of the day, he’s an employee to them. In any other job, if you make a racist comment, you get fired. Why was he kept there?! I also don’t understand why the commercials weren’t edited to take out their bad bits, like every actor does every scene perfect in one shot 🤦🏻♀️
Tyra didn't give a sht about that you know. She only wants more dramas, the more ppl talk about her show, the better. That's the kind of person she is.
I actually think that only made Tyra less sympathetic- not more. Because Tyra seems bent on making "her girls" go through all the horrible things she went through and I bet Tyra had her share of racists back her modeling days, before she was famous and there were fewer black models. Time and time again Tyra even says as much, "I went through THIS AND THAT so should you!". Some people look at those younger than them and want to spare them hardships they themselves went through and if they are in a position as powerful as Tyra's, will try to change things so that the younger generation will be overall happier. Others have a kind of revenge mentality- like hazing rituals being repeated by those who were hazed themselves- because since they suffered, it's "only fair" younger people should go through the same suffering as well. Tyra is the second type of person.
This show weaponizes sexism, racism, etc. under the guise of it being "training" for the modeling industry. But the sad thing is, a model like Tyra, who has dealt with bullying and everything else from this same industry, isn't utilizing her experience to better it with what influence she has. She smashed the glass ceiling and pulled the ladder up behind her so no one else can follow.
That's so accurate. She likes to show how much she accomplished and how amazing it is but now she put herself on such a high horse that she just crushes every other model
I agree! What’s even more ironic is that she spent years of her career talking about how traumatized she was from her few interactions with Naomi Campbell and constantly tried to get Naomi to admit that she bullied her. Then she starts ANTM just to gaslight inexperienced models and encourage them to ignore harassment and unprofessional behavior.
I feel like Tyra treats these models like this as revenge for the way she was treated. Instead of doing better, she lashes out on innocent people who had nothing to do with her trauma and just inflicts the same trauma and pain on them. Just horrible. And Yes Catalan is harder than spanish in my opinion as a native spanish speaker
Even when I was a kid, I was so angry that they chopped Jada's hair off knowing that as a black woman, it took time and effort to keep it full and healthy, and she saw her hair as a crown of beauty. Then I became livid when they did absolutely nothing when that male model was racist towards her. They stripped Jada of her hair and then her dignity.
Not only that, but remember that they did a photoshoot where she was supposed to be a super strong woman, with painted muscles and all, and one of the judges said she looked “too masculine it was scary”, I bet that was done on purpose. Since her hair was cut she felt less feminine all the time and then she “randomly” has to be a “masculine looking” woman for a photoshoot. They made her feel worse and worse every week, and then this male model? Wouldn’t surprise me if he was hired for that. She was set up for failure
I think Jaeda still looked beautiful with the the short hair but it did nothing to elevate her to model status , they gave the girls mom on the go haircuts.
Reminds me of a model in the later seasons who had a thick mane of natural hair. They gave a terrible effing haircut which pissed me ALL THE WAY OFF! Yall know how long it takes to get your hair to that point? Just to cut it off???....like she couldn't get a sew in like everyone else? Then they eliminated her like an episode or 2 later cos she didn't seem confident enough. 😐
@@MADNEWYORKER914 The father of Tyra's child is white. The skin color of her romantic partner isn't relevant. ANTM has a history of being particularly problematic toward black women and this scenario was no exception. Jaeda deserves an apology, but I highly doubt she will receive one.
@@Hiker2110 It is relevant because people in those kind of relationships will usually turn a "blind eye" or defend the racist BS that's going on. Your post is a matter of opinion, and you women will talk about the disrespect before the racial incident, especially non blacks!!! Would she be crying if that racist clown didn't say what he said??? And Tyra's SELLOUT @$$ acted like it wasn't a big deal.
@@MADNEWYORKER914 What are you even talking about? So if a black person has a romantic relationship with a white person, that means they turn a blind eye to racism? That is a problematic assumption to make. This is my final comment in this conversation. If you believe I'm dismissing Tyra's problematic behavior on ANTM, then that sounds like a you problem.
In so many ways Tyra missed the opportunity to use her platform to make a serious difference. I know that as a young black model of the 90s, there were things she faced, including racism or lack of understanding of things like makeup or hair care for women of color. With her having these experiences and later having her own show which she was in full creative control of, she could have advocated more instead and glossing over or making everything her version of a tough Love moment. Super disappointed and I hate that I didn’t notice this before …
She suffered so all the girls should suffer as well. It's why when the models complain about something she comes up with the "oh that's nothing, I've dealt with worse."
Even as a kid I never understood why that guy wasn't fired. He created a hostile work environment by making a racist comment, and by refusing to help her practice he wasn't doing his job. They didn't need a new guy for each shoot, let her work with someone else.
I believe they asked him if he was into black girls, and he said that he wasn’t into girls in general. Italian speakers cleared that up years ago. So, they either edited the scene to make it appear as if they thought he was saying something racist and/or the girls misinterpreted what he was saying. So, it was either editing or the producers didn’t clear up the misunderstanding. It’s nonetheless the show being messy and manipulative. They should have never been put in that position.
I was this year old when it dawned on me that Tyra and the entire show were actually psychologically, and physically abusing and traumatizing these young women. I’m disgusted.
Its a reality show. It’s meant to feed people the same needs that coliseums fed when people cheered at the death of gladiators. People love this, always have always will. Rupaul’s drag race puts psychological terror on each queen and pins them against each other too. Don’t watch it and their ratings go down, but obviously it doesn’t. I’d drop the racist model, if I didn’t know it was all scripted. Probably scripted all the way to the winner.
I know it's a reality show but sometimes they are going too far to torture this aspiring models for their future. They gave the challenges which similar to Fear Factors, every time a model has a mental breakdown or get sick, they forced them to do it while in fact, it took times for them to get well. Growing up, you realize Tyra is a villain, she's *Tyrant Banks*
Tyra could have used this platform to bring awareness to wrong conduct in the modeling industry, and to help people view models as real people, who are smart and multifaceted. Instead, she fed into every negative stereotype. She also made models afraid to stand up for themselves and for each other, which would have created a "sisterhood" among them and would have protected them. Instead, everyone was supposed to view everyone else as competition, to be cut down, in order to elevate themselves. Really, an awful show, all around.
@@JessicaKobeissi could fund it with sponsors too; today is sponsored by hello fresh so we're photographing a hello fresh ad, today is sponsored by scent bird so each model gets a scent to try and capture in their photos. Invite on all the lovely photographer friends of yours as guest photographers, it'd be a win win win win. I'd watch the heck out of it!
@@JessicaKobeissi I would love to see you have your own modeling show because you really truly love and care about your models and will NEVER do all the horrible things to your models and normalize it like how ANTM does.
Mr. Jay developed a more respectful on set relationship with the racist male model then with the female models that he had been “coaching” for all those weeks. Like you can see him and the male model in the background looking, smirking and making different facial expressions at each other as Jaeda is messing up her lines. It’s disgusting.
Which is disgusting jay should of fired that man for being racist! It honestly shows how messed up Americans next top model was. It never was okay and I’m sad more of us didn’t speak up about it back then!
Nor was this the only time he did that. Mr. Jay is now painting himself as the poor martyr who hated Tyra's tyrannical ways but could not stop them because of his contract but he actively engaged in demeaning the girls and buddying up with the people actually accusing them on set. Remember Keenyah? In her set, there was a creepo literally grunting into her ear and touching her thighs. When she spoke up against it, Mr. Jay told her to shut the hell up and be "professional". He mocked her on set and very recently went on podcasts where he mocked her *again*. Mr. Jay is as bad as Tyra. In a sense, he may even be worse as he was right there- watching the girls go through hell- while cackling like a lunatic, SEVERAL times. Also, Tyra is a terrible person and what she did is unforgivable but she did have a career- being one of the very first black model to be hired on major fashion functions- while Mr. Jay's entire claim to fame is his involvement in AMNTM.
Others have commented that the male model may have been hired/coached to say that to her, so maybe Mr. Jay exchanged "a look" with him, to let him know that he did well for ANTM.
I just remember this poor girl Jaeda who is so beautiful in the beginning of the season Tyra told her: You have always been the "pretty girl", and decided to make her feel ugly by cutting off all of her hair! Tyra is an abusive rotten person that loves to use ritualistic humiliation, and normalizes it by perpetually hazing these girls. They go in thinking Tyra is a Goddess, and come out finding she is evil!
This made me feel emotionally distressed. Coercing women into kissing anyone they don't want to kiss is so horrible and unacceptable. Forcing a woman of color to kiss a racist man is so many levels of disgusting, I can't even begin to express just how awful it really is.
@Nonaya Bidness Like no. Models don't need to kiss anyone if they don't want to, they can refuse and actually many do. It's just this show that is showing models don't have any choice and have to do everything anyone wants them to do which is dangerous.
Jaeda does NOT need to apologize for crying! It's so clear that she's uncomfortable! From what I can recall, most TV sets and movies make sure that everyone on set is filming kissing scenes responsibly. The actors usually goof around in between takes to relieve the tension. Tl;dr-THIS IS NOT OKAY!
I can't believe how they're ( judges) are just glazing over the fact that a coworker, said something racist to her, then she's forced to kiss a racist, on what for her, is now a hostel work place , or not participate, and possibly give up a dream. I can't believe I never realized how awful this show was to the girls. Shame on Tyra Banks for not using her platform to better the industry, and not reinforce bad behavior.
antm girl: hey I'm not quite getting your directions could you just explain more? thanks tyra: OMG HOW DARE U SPEAK UP random model: *is racist* Tyra: does absolutely nothings, says nothing
And Tyra's "He's just an extra, a prop" speech MIGHT have given her a boost and meant something if she had said that in a talk with Jaeda BEFORE the shoot when Jaeda first told her about his comment.
@@vlo4829 I just don't get it like they always tell the girls to behave well to not complain to not cry etc etc bc ppl won't want to work with them yet she will keep a racist model who could easily be replaced since he's just an extra
@@ihavealight8876 Other commenters have claimed that the male model was hired and paid to make that comment to get into her head. That actually makes sense to me, given ANTM's track record. It's good for ratings and generating buzz and otherwise pretty stupid for the male model to do (although of course it's still possible that he's just the kind of guy who doesn't care what he says). Others also pointed out that Tyra/ANTM seemed to really dislike Jaeda's confidence (maybe in general or maybe as a black woman) and did things every week to try and tear her down.
Also ANTM: Model: I don’t know what I’m doing but I don’t want to be eliminated so I’m not gonna say anything and just wing it Tyra at panel: these pictures suck Model: I didn’t know what I was doing and I didn’t wanna get eliminated Tyra: YOU HAVE TO SPEAK UP! As a young black woman, this scene was one I’ll never forget. The epitome of cringe 😬 from the racist male, to the way Tyra swept it under the rug. I’m new to your channel. Thank you Jessica, for not making excuses for clear disrespect. All women of all races are queens that should be appreciated. 👸🏽👸🏼👸🏻👸🏿👸🏾
Agreed, Jessica is amazing, and is very honest and abrupt against the abuse of these women! This was absolutely devastating, I think there was another few of them shaving women bold then saying they looked ridiculous or ugly, it boils my blood! Especially as a lot of women take pride in their hair ect, and for black women their hair is a part of their identity and sadly these women are only just accepting their own beauty including their natural hair! So to cut of such gorgeous hair will have most likely made her very distraught and worried when it comes to cutting her hair now 🥺 she's a gorgeous Queen regardless but it was 1000% uncalled for and her confidence slowly went downhill and they blamed her for that! I'm white, and I know it won't mean much to some, but I hardly ever go to the hair dressers because when I was younger (about 20 years ago) I had long, silky, think wavy-curly hair, my mum shaved off all my hair and I'm still traumatized and my hair is my everything now, I know it's silly but I was bullied so badly, I always straightened my hair too, because I wanted to be like everyone else, and because when it grew out, instead of it being wavy-curly having it shaved made it kink and look stupid.. and I didn't want to be bullied for my hair, now I'm a mum, I have also only just started to embrace my hair fully, I rarely straighten or use heat product on my hair and it's now curly, but I will never let someone cut my hair short again, it can also mess up people's wave pattern having it cut off... So I feel for her having to go through this, then tortured for it! 😑 having to also kiss a racist Pr!ck, it's unacceptable and I hope she found her peace within after this disgusting show! Sorry for the ramble!! Agreed all women are Queens regardless of anything ❤️ Women need to stick together (tbh everyone need to) and build a better future, where discrimination of any kind is not tolerated by anyone! Btw from what can see on your pic, you are absolutely stunning! Keep shining hon, have a good day/night ❤️

I love that you read the whole cue card poster out loud to emphasize how difficult it would really have been for the models, especially because you have a background with what Americans think of as foreign language. I have respect for your method of delivery and compassion!
And Jaeda literally stood up for herself when she first told Tyra about the racist model....and no response. So it sends of a message of standing up for yourself is wrong... the opposite of empowering
I’m actually feeling physically sick watching Jada go through this. This is emotional manipulation ay the highest level! They deliberately set her up with a racist & then expected her to kiss him? This is unconscionable. Tyra should feel ashamed for what she put these girls through! I’ve seen some low points on this show but this? This is probably up there with the very worst! I sincerely hope that Jada is doing well. This show exploited her & so many other aspiring models. It’s truly sickening! 😖
So tyra’s cure for racism is for black women to make racist men love us by giving them the best kiss of their lives? … Uh no, that’s fetishism. I swear everyone a part of the show (except for most of the models) were so problematic. Looking back at it NONE of them were likable in the slightest way. I hope this show didn’t do permanent damage to these girls. Sadly I know some have passed away and I know this show didn’t help with their health smh
@Nonaya Bidness not in the real model world, if you don’t want that job you can just ask your agent to not book jobs like that. In this show they made the girls do things which puts them in a bad mindset that may make it easier for people to take advantage of the girls
Mr. J with 0% Catalan knowledge “that was the best read of the day”. As a native speaker, I just have to say none of the girls got it but that’s because it’s such a hard language to pronounce. It just shows the total bias they had towards some of the girls.
I was thinking the same thing - they literally could've said anything, as long as they made it sound catalan-ish he would've had no chance of knowing 😅🤷🏻♀️
@@mmc8539 oh absolutely. Spanish is the common language shared by EVERYONE in Spain. It’s also much, much easier to pronounce. The ✨audacity✨ of this show
I live near Catalonia, and we had to learn the language and it's so hard! I feel so bad that they were judging them so harshly. And I honestly couldn't understand what the poor girls were even saying 😩
Male model: *is racist* Tyra, a black woman who could’ve used this opportunity to show support for other black women in the industry but instead opts to gaslight her for the sake of entertainment: just make him not racist :)
THIS! Like wtF I remember watching this and expecting him to get yeeted. As a teen I was confused she didnt-and I questioned if modelling was really like this.
I have never watched this show other then with Jessica. I am shook with how awful this show was aloud to treat these girls, let alone do it publicly. Disgusting that people supported this show for too many seasons imo
tyra will never apologize for any of it bc it opens her up legally by taking onus for wrongdoing. the most we’ll ever get from her was the tweet in 2020 “sending virtual hugs”.
I had a best friend that was awful to me in High School, and this was her favorite show. Tyra was role modeling to teenage girls and they were passing it on with their friends.
Tyra constantly says "If only we could change the industry" and then piles on it and even reinforces it. If someone at my work says something racist its not a "Oh deal with it." I don't for one minute believe they couldn't replace that man.
I remember watching as a young black girl. At the time, I didn't find anything Tyra said was wrong, like its so sad that I found this whole racist situation NORMAL. Smh
That's the thing, that so many of us POC and immigrants have understood that racist people exist and we just have to continue. That's why Tyra and the Jays didn't speak out; they too as POC have internalized the idea that you just _have_ to deal with it and move on. It's sadly based on a history of oppression and expectations that nobody else will come to your rescue, or that you'll be called "difficult", "sensitive" and "starting trouble". And once you're seen that way, you lose opportunities that whites would get automatically. As upsetting as it is to see them stand down, we need to remember the world wasn't so forgiving and empowering of minorities of color until very recently. It's great things are changing, but many people grew up learning that your actions as a POC/ immigrants will reflect on the group as a whole, and being seen as "negative" makes everyone like you look bad too. A sad situation all around...
Spanish speaker here. The guy didnt actually say that he didnt like Black girls. He said he didnt want to rehearse during dinner and she insisted. He then said I dont like that, as in her behavior.
@@mariogibbs9836 why are you so sure? they could have just misconstrued what he said and then convince themselves about their wrong assumptions. I think that's what most likely happened
They never let a confident girl win. Both Elise and Yaya were the best in their seasons, but they were also confident so they gave it to lesser models...
They're wrong, they should've absolutely stopped him from working with her & fired him & used a different guy. Racism should NEVER be allowed or tolerated & the fact they forced her to continue to work with him & then punished her because she was uncomfortable is disgusting. They're horrible people for doing the things they do to these poor girls. ANTM is trash.
He literally never said those exact words. She playfully brought up the idea of practicing beforehand but he said he wanted to just eat dinner. With that being said I feel he kept it professional... maybe he is in a relationship and doesn't want to do anything sexual without it being a part of the job...
"some judges doubt your passion for this" She was forced to kiss a guy that refused to help her learn the words to the damn commercial because of her skin and they had the audacity to send her home?? And what makes this worse is that she thinks this is her fault. They sat up there and let her think that her being rightfully angry was wrong and that something was wrong with *her*. This show is disgusting.
This is how Black and Indigenous Peoples le are made to feel on a micro level. If only people understood the identity crisis and individual turmoils that racism created in us not only on a macro but also a micro level😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭. It is a lifelong worth of distractions that we ALSO have to focus on while also trying to live regular life and achieve our goals.
This one is probably one of the most horrendous things the girls have to go through in antm. Number 1 for me is Cycle 1 Adrianne literally got sexually abused on the street (a parisian man groped her), and they caught that on film and did nothing...
I think alongside this we can put Kyala, a lesbian who confessed to Mr.Jay that she had been sexually assaulted as a child(she was 11), being pressured to let the guy hold her close and kiss her on the neck. And she had to go from literally crying to "I have to get it out of my head" I felt bad for her...assault victims shouldn't have to do things that trigger them.
And the one with the male model who kept sexually harassing the model during the photoshoot and they just basically told her to get over it and that it will happen.
This is extra crazy because at this time Tyra was giving interviews about her past modeling experiences and how differently she was treated because she was a Black model. So you would think she would make this a priority and not want the next generation of models to go thru what she had went thru but of course this is ANTM so nothing reasonable, kind and compassionate would be done 😒
I think Tyra has this weird power complex where she enjoys making the models uncomfortable and belittling them. That’s why she’s never compassionate, she has a superiority complex.
I also believe Tyra flip flops her values depending on if it benefits her or not. She’ll talk about how hard it was to be a black model in an industry that treats them differently (to build empathy for her) but won’t defend another black girl being discriminated (because she wants the drama for the show, makes more views, more money). It’s honestly disgusting
This is why I've always gravitated to Naomi more because I highly doubt that naomi would tolerate this blatant Racism if this was done to one of her girls.(I can see the meme with her stomping with the shoe's now🤣🤣) Tyra always struck me as a mean girl undercover that tried to portray herself as nice and relatable. There was something always fake with her.
That "person" should have been removed from the set. His actions were unacceptable and the fact they didn't have her back must have been frustrating and demoralizing.
It’s so sad. I think Tyra based a lot of handling of these situations based on her own experiences. I’m sure at some point she was told to suck it up when it came to a racist/sexist situation. And instead of empowering the newer generations to speak up and use their voice, she’s trying to set things back to when she was a model.
Exactly. Instead of doing things to help change it, she's just like "deal with it, this is the way it is." And the models apparently aren't supposed to show emotion or discomfort in these situations. Don't models have right to a respectful and comfortable environment?
I honestly think that male model said something much worse than what was aired! It always felt like that but was edited to keep it more tame for TV and selling the narrative that Jaeda was being "dramatic."
I was confused seeing that moment and then Jessicas' reaction and all the comments. He didn't make himself clear, he just said "I don't like" ... Don't like what? And then in the video the girls said he had said "I don't like black girls"...🤔
@@yogarcia6066 2:33 He literally repeated back to her (after asking her "do you understand?) "you asked me if I wanted you to be like that (in her actions, shaking his head like she did), and I said no I don't like." This had absolutely nothing to do with "racism" or "not liking Black girls."
I don't think so. If he had used a racial slur, I don't believe Jaeda would have stayed and continued this process. It was bad enough he said he didn't like black girls, but using a racial slur would have been a lot worse. I don't think Jaeda would have allowed this disrespect. She can't do much if the guy does not like her, but I feel she would have not tolerated a racial slur along with the other girls. There was another black girl present. Two black girls would not tolerate that. But at the end of the day, Tyra managed this situation badly.
I like how you are literally stating the self respect you have for yourself and others...your not having it with the excuses for the akward situations the contestants have to face. I am glad you love to speak up for models and them having positive and constructive experiences.
This whole clip frustrated me for so many reasons. 1. The whole thing with making that poor girl kiss that guy. I absolutely hated that. I agree that they should have kicked him to the curb and got someone else. 2. They talk about how the commercial is about strong women, but all the words are about chasing boys and stuff? I didn’t understand that. 3. If you want a good commercial in another country and language to celebrate the women of that country, GET THE WOMEN FROM THAT COUNTRY! That’s just my opinion though.

I remember that too. I was beat up by the guys in my class for being black. The teachers ignored me and when my mother came to the school the administration focused on my academic shortcomings which were a direct result of constant bullying.
This was more than just his preference it was racism. Even if he doesn’t date black women, he isn’t marrying her it’s just an on screen kiss. Him voicing his opinion like that and refusing to practice with her was a stunt to prove that even as a no name model, he was above her.
Yeah he shouldn't have voiced his opinion period. They kept saying "he's an extra treat him like that". No you should have treated him like that and let him go on the spot when she told you what he said.
03:16 So we're taking this girl's word for it? Did they show the male model saying he doesn't like black girls in the actual episode? Because it isn't anywhere in this video... Edit: He didn't even say he didn't like HER?! 02:34 He said "I don't like you TO" in regards to being all kissy-kissy at the dinner table. At no point did he say anything about her race, unless it for some reason was off-screen
This episode was too damn much. Also side note - thank you so much Jessica. I appreciated your response to my comment last week. You replied days after I commented about losing my dog and that meant a lot to me so thank you so much.
Hey, I lost my dog last year. It's hard I know but you gotta remember the good moments with your pupper and they'll be by your side even after they're gone. Stay strong! ❤❤
Our pets are like family members. It’s never easy to lose one. Though one thing I am sure of, your precious boy had an amazingly kind and sweet human in his life who loved him so much and gave him the best life 🥰 as I’m sure he was the most beautiful soul! sending you well wishes, take care Erin ❤️
You could tell that Miss J and the female judge looked horrified initially after being told about his comment, but as soon as Nigel and Tyra had something negative to say it was like they felt that they *had to follow her lead and their words didn’t match the disgusted expressions they clearly made while hearing the story. Very sad. So many missed opportunities to build up these girls and change the modeling world.
Not gonna lie. I’m glad Jada lost and had to leave. This was WAY to humiliating. She deserves so much better than what they delivered. I hope she is thriving and used this experience to become the top model, periodt.
Hi Jessica! A catalan speaker here, I just wanted to step in to explain the line that is shown is written for an english speaker to pronounce catalan accurately (it was actually very hard for me to read and undestandthe meaning of that). Written correctly will be: - La única raó per la que tenia una relació seriosa amb el meu xicot és perquè m'agradaven les seves fotos de petit i volia veure com serien els nostres fills. Translated: - The only reason why I was in a serious relationship with my boyfriend was because I liked his kid photos and I wanted to see how our children will look like. I just wanted to point that out, just because catalan is a really small language and all the people in ANTM are butchering it. :'D PD: I love your videos and your ANTM series
Also Catalan is not more difficult than spanish is just a different language like italian or french. It's is only spoken in a few places in Spain and in Andorra (a tiny contry betwen Spain and France).
@@himmelmoon2607 personal opinion but to me Catalan is a bit harder to pronounce than Spanish. They are pretty close but for someone who is trying to pronounce for the first time and isn't familiar with the language at all it can be pretty hard.
How about a compilation of brands/product placements associated with some of these incidents? Is Secret really proud that a model of color was forced to kiss a racist to push their product? How does Caress feel about that SA in their body wash ad? These models are owed apologies AND REPARATIONS from Tyra, and the network, and the frickin campaigns.
I agree with what you said, "this man is way too comfortable voicing his opinion". Like if he's so open saying he hates black women then what other bad takes does he have especially in terms of women and POC
the whole " celebrating ur strength " stuff is so performative, they put these girls in positions where they're degraded and dehumanized mocked and laughed at and then they shame the women for not being " diva " enough to overlook racism or sexism
racism is not 'funny', models are not objects, being a director does not give you all the rights over a human being... i am sad, angry and deeply revolted to see so much contempt, c its a shame from tyra, who i think has long since forgotten where she came from...and who her ancestors are, and what they went through, i am mixed race and my heart bleeds watching this
Am I the only one who has started disliking Tyra more and more seeing these episodes as an adult? First the model being sexually harassed now this 😑 Can we start holding Tyra accountable for how toxic this show was.
@@naledisebati5858 Apparently she's also being a terrible host on Dancing with the Stars. (I don't watch it but I see articles pop up since it's related to my antm searches.) One dancer was sick and went to throw up after her performance, and of course Tyra had to inform the whole world and interview her about it on camera! Like jeez, chill.
@@naledisebati5858 Girl! I was the same exact way when it came to Tyra Banks back in the day. But ever since quarantine hit and people had more time on their hands. I saw a few videos that broke down how horrible this show was in many ways. It has really opened my eyes to what I was too young to see back then. I enjoyed the show and what not. But there were a lot of faults and wrongs in it. I notice it more and more now that I am an adult.
As a professional director, I would never allow an actor/ess to endure this sort of treatment. I understand being on a time limit so maybe it's not possible to replace the actor behaving this way, but I would certainly remove him from the set and plan something else. Or, I would've taken one of the other male models still on set. Since nobody's judging the men, I don't see why it would be a problem to reuse one of them. This is such an easy problem to get around, they just wanted her uncomfortable so she would do a bad job. Also, it doesn't matter if any of them can read that language flawlessly simply by sounding the words out or something. There's more nuance with pronunciation and all that. Besides, just being able to read it isn't as important as knowing what you're saying because only then can you make it sound natural and believable. They could've read the words and declared war on Spain for all they knew. None of this is professional or how it's done in the real world.
Right, because you’re viewing it as a rational empathetic professional who actually wants to protect people and create a good product. None of these problems were actual problems to get around, they were set up on purpose to make sure there was drama and for people to do terribly. I’m sure they paired her with this man on purpose once they knew he was racist or directed him to act racist, which is one of the truly chilling things about this.
14:00 Mr Jays face here just proves that the judges enjoyed humiliating the girls and making them feel uncomfortable. It’s pretty sick actually. How was this problematic show allowed to go on as long as it did?! Omg.
Catalan speaker here, and a liguist/translator to boot! So, the first time where the guy is speaking during their dinner and the subs say "Speaking in Catalan", it's actually Spanish. Plus the guy drags his words quite a lot. Horrid, hateful representation of my region, TBH. The transcription you attempted to read is badly done and you're quite right when you say that Catalan is more difficult than Spanish. Catalan is in between French and Spanish, so it has more vowel sounds, different and more difficult consonants and the like. The Catalan text, as far as I understand the crappy card the models had to read says "La única raó per la que tenia una relació seriosa amb el meu xicot era perquè m'agradaven les seves fotos de petit i volia veure com serien els nostres fills," which means "the only reason I had a serious relationship with my boyfriend was that I liked his pictures as a kid and I wanted to know what our children would look like". Absurd in every way (with some wonky grammar thrown in for good measure.) Aaaaaand yes, the girls were set up to fail, whenever it says they're speaking Catalan, I can't understand a word. Having seen the transcription, I'm not surprised at all. It was not their fault, production made it impossible for them AGAIN.
Also, it's obvious to me that Mr. Jay had no qualifications to judge anyone's butchering of the language, to be honest. He should have shut up. Same goes for Tyra and her RIDICULOUS Spanish in the beginning and everyone's comments in the panel. Those judges acted as if they knew good Catalan from bad Catalan and they clearly didn't. They were just judging how uncomfortable the models look. At least the awful racist guy is kind of dictating the message for Jaeda to repeat it, most likely because she looked so defeated. It's the only proper Catalan spoken in the whole episode, sadly. It was a misrepresentation of Catalonia, Barcelona (one of the most diverse cities in the world), Spain in general, and the models. Awful, just awful. The reasoning behimd that elimination was SO WRONG. That was the cherry on top.
This script is so terrible. I don’t speak Catalan but it’s such a cool sounding language when I heard it in the Red Band society as a kid. I honestly think they put it in a different language simply to get away with creating such a sexist script. None of them were in any position to judge considering that they can’t say the script either.
Right??? Anybody would cry if they were being forced to kiss someone who insulted them to their face! They took advantage of so many of the models on this show and it’s disgusting.
I can’t even imagine how Jaeyda is feeling… this episode just makes me so upset and angry. She’s already insecure and just trying her best and then that guy was so rude, he was talking to her in such a condescending way like a bully
I always liked to play the princess (she handles the best for my tastes too) just to drive the point home. Its all in good fun, men and women are equal. Love your videos Jessica!
Excuse me, as a spanish native I'm still trying to find the part in which he said he doesn't like black girls. He clearly speaks poor english and was trying to say he didn't want to practice kissing before the commercial. Not in one single part he mentioned race. This seems like a fake drama setup. Besides, why would he be in a tv show literally made and hosted by a black woman if he hated black girls so much. This is bs lol.
Notice twiggy’s reaction and miss jay’s reaction when they heard it, and then (white male) Nigel jumps in “it doesn’t matter” and then they all back him up. Sure Nigel, sure.
@@melybely8852 he’s white with like a 20% of Sri Lanka. If that 20% of Sri Lanka doesn’t make him white than my 20% of European blood doesn’t make me black 😆. (And his Portuguese blood means nothing too since there are a handful of white Portugal people)
Even though there is some Sri lankan in him it does not mean that he has any empathy for a poc or even thinks like a poc. He will think like the dominant race. He will act like the dominant race and treat ppl like he was white. So he is in fact a white male. He never identifies with poc unless he wants to tell ppl he is exotic. Some mix ppl identify as white and nothing more. Hell, Tyra has light eyes and she thinks she is white.
@@Daniela-xy3ow I think it’s dangerous for us to equate wanting marriage/babies with unempowerment. Feminist empowerment is about choice and autonomy. If women decide they want to go after having a family that’s just as empowering as women deciding to go after a job or a passion
@@1Dispretty2me Absolutely, if women want a family, I fully support pursuing that desire, there's nothing wrong with that. But the way it was done was just too much of a "Disney princess doing anything she can to get the handsome prince"-moment (as much as I like Disney films, this type of narrative feels outdated to me).
Catalan is more difficult than regular Spanish. So yeah, it was just to humiliate the girls. 🙃 Also, according to Eugena the producers would not let anyone switch with Jaeda. But honestly if they really cared, they would have fired that guy! Oh yeah and according to Caridee they used the TEST shot of her commercial, the very first shot and not any of the other shoots she did, so that’s why she looks so crazy in her commercial. 🙃
Modeling ≠ acting I never understood why commercials were sometimes an elimination challenge. Models can sometimes act and actors can sometimes model, but if it's a MODELING competition, they should be eliminated based on their modeling. Sure, have the commercials be the first part of the challenge, but don't eliminate them for that alone. In real life, actors are given more time to prepare and would do multiple takes so editors can slice the good parts in post or add some B-roll over the actor's voice in case the acting was truly that awful.
Thank you for making this video. I was a teen when this episode came on and it just taught me there will be workplaces that won't defend you when someone is in the wrong.
This whole show is just abusing women under the guise of “toughening them up” for the modeling industry. Tolerate abuse or be kicked out. Beyond sickening.
Sometimes you will as a model be in a situation where you may have to do something you don’t like, but you can tell this is *on purpose to hurt the models.* 😑
Hi Jessica! I'm from Mexico and I can confirm that catalán is completely different to Spanish, tbh I could only understand a couple of the words on the script and definitely not the message or idea they were trying to transmit

Something that I found interesting when Jaeda was getting judged for her commercial with that racist man, the one judge who was the most appalled and sympathized with her wasTwiggy. I really expected more from Tyra and Miss J. To protect her and make sure she wasn’t being forced into a situation where she felt so unsafe. Proud of you Jaeda and the girls who said after dinner that none of them wanted to be in a commercial with a man so cruel and racist. You are a beautiful human! I’m just so very sorry you were put in that position.
Model: * tries to speak a language she never spoke and had to learn the night before * ANTM: “that was unforgivable!” Also ANTM: * forces a non-consensual kiss with a racist man” Also, it’s one thing to not be attracted to someone but he refused to help her learn the language as well because he “didn’t like her”
I can't believe how everyone was just okay with her being this uncomfortable during her shoot. That's just so sick..protect your model from mental or physical harm always...crazy how this was aired and they didn't get the show shut down over this kind of stuff.
First Tyra chops off her hair, and Jaeda told her she felt ugly. Then of all things to make Jaeda feel ever worse she gets to kiss a racist. Wow, Tyra obviously did not like/respect Jaeda.
This episode made me so angry at the time. The one time we get a black women in the position of power, and she doesn't advocate for her fellow sister!! Disgusting.... Really made me go off tyra.
Wow, they literally said "she needs more grooming". Maybe grooming wasn't used as often in abuse context when the season aired, but it's creepy accurate. They're stripping the girls of their autonomy and gaslighting them into people pleasers, which is exactly what abusers do to young victims to keep them compliant.
Well, to be fair, there's actually TWO definitions of the word. Grooming in the sense of abuse, and grooming in the sense of... literal grooming (being polished and done up). They obviously meant it as the latter. Her needing more polishing before becoming a model.
Grooming is the entertainment industry has ALWAYS been toxic and it has ALWAYS existed but they assume the girls will do anything for fame because the greater majority have and always will be willing to do anything for fame.
Spanish native speaker here, Tyra only says ONE line in Spanish and she screws it up anyway LOL. She should have said "BienvenidAs a España", not "BienvenidOs"... we distinguish gender there, and she was addressing a group of females- therefore, she should have used the female form "BienvenidAs", with the "A" rather than the male/collective that goes with an "O". Then again, maybe she was addressing the audience as a whole rather than only the models... in which case "BienvenidOs" is correct. But I don't care, I just wanted to roast her LOL
@@linnetcreative gender neutral as in a pronoun? I couldn't really tell about Catalán because I don't speak it (it's very different from Spanish!) But in Spanish we don't have an official gender neutral pronoun :/. And as a general rule we use the male forms when talking about a collective, if that makes sense? Like in this case of bienvenidOs vs bienvenidAs. At least that's how it is in my Argentinean version of Spanish lol
I’ve always thought this was one of the absolute worst moments of ANTM. To eliminate someone who has gone through that trauma?? Disgusting. And I loathe the times they have to do commercials in other languages.
Can you imagine if the roles were reversed and one of the female models said she didn’t want to work with a male model because she didn’t like black guys. She would have been off the show so fast… that’s ridiculous.

I agree; I remember it being so toxic of a show
Tyra did a good job eliminating victimisation.
I decided to look her up. She's looking absolutely gorgeous. Married with 3 beautiful children and still modeling. Looks like she won in the end. Happy for her. She's thriving. ❤️
Most of the girls that didnt make on here definately "MADE IT" look at Yaya playing April on Chicago Med for 8 years

Winning isn't PTSD. You never know what goes on within the constructs of our minds. Time heals but not all wounds.
I feel you!!! I've had a very similar experience! It is lonely being ahead of the curve sometimes!
I stopped watching ANTM when they first started for the same reason. I felt horrible for the models and a lot of them were teens themselves. I internalised a lot of what the judges said and a lot of what they were saying could be summed up as, "put up and shut up or leave."
I was told the same thing actually for having the same views as you.... When did I say they weren't beautiful? Or anything bad about the models?
I LOVED this show back in the early 2000s (I think I was like 18 when it came out). So I apologize for rolling my eyes at people like you trying to point out the obvious. I'm SHOCKED watching them back now. It's no wonder that I focused so much of my life on my appearance and "needing" to be skinny!
What’s there to gaslight for?
Psychotic! Wtf! Thanks for the tea
this genuinely makes me sick, tyra has too much good will. all of those ppl should be ashamed
I remember that. Cut off all her pretty hair and watch her unravel.
I wrote something about the guy model being coached but more in a way of being antagonistic towards whoever picked him.
But this makes a lot of sense. They may have taken aside whoever Jaeda picked and made him do it (or instructed all the guys beforehand to go for that).
So many things I can't believe anyone would have done without getting instructed/paid for it
This does make more sense than the male model putting his job at risk by declaring on US TV that he doesn't like black girls.
I mean, they allowed sexual abuse (the model touching Kenya), and did blackface, so I'm not surprised.
And the shocking part of that is Eugenia is also black
That's hilarious!! Lmao
That’s so funny! Thank you for translating
Omg lmaooo thats hilarious!
Omg 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thank you!
Also, is it me or are the cue cards written phonetically, and not like the words are actually written? (I learnt Catalan and Valencià as a child) it's throwing me off so bad.
It’s mind blowing that as a black woman herself, Tyra didn’t do anything about this 🤯
At the end of the day, he’s an employee to them.
Tyra only cares about herself
She was probably the one who wrote and gave the script to that guy so yeah...
Also y was the one in b/w and the rest weren't
This show weaponizes sexism, racism, etc. under the guise of it being "training" for the modeling industry. But the sad thing is, a model like Tyra, who has dealt with bullying and everything else from this same industry, isn't utilizing her experience to better it with what influence she has. She smashed the glass ceiling and pulled the ladder up behind her so no one else can follow.
That's so accurate. She likes to show how much she accomplished and how amazing it is but now she put herself on such a high horse that she just crushes every other model
This show was for anti empowering women.
This 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The very thing she accused Naomi of... a woman who on her show kicked a girl off for perceived racism immediately. Tyra gives narcissist vibes...
It's also pretty clear that "the way Tyra was treated" by Naomi Campbell was mostly in her own head. This show is just abusive.
Yes, exactly! All of the above! She's nuts
💯💯💯
You nailed it
There you have it
Even when I was a kid, I was so angry that they chopped Jada's hair off knowing that as a black woman, it took time and effort to keep it full and healthy, and she saw her hair as a crown of beauty.
Without that haircut, she doesn't look like model tbh.

Super disappointed and I hate that I didn’t notice this before …
She was probably brainwashed and coked up.
Tyra wanted to make “Juicy Reality Television”. This is why, to this day, The Fashion Industry doesn’t take ANTM seriously.

She suffered so all the girls should suffer as well. It's why when the models complain about something she comes up with the "oh that's nothing, I've dealt with worse."

I 100% agree with you!
I think he was hired for that 😁
I believe they asked him if he was into black girls, and he said that he wasn’t into girls in general.

I agree with you...absolutely demeaning, stripping them of any shred of dignity.
Really, an awful show, all around.
a reality show is not real 😅😅😅😅

@@Nocturnalux I could not have said it better myself. Mr. Jay disgusts me even more now that he’s playing the “actually I hated Tyra” bullshit.
Others have commented that the male model may have been hired/coached to say that to her, so maybe Mr. Jay exchanged "a look" with him, to let him know that he did well for ANTM.
@@vlo4829 it is exactly what I was thinking. I think the male model was told to make those comments just to create drama.
Jaeda was not ugly with short hair and there is nothing wrong with women having pixie cuts!!!

She was forced to kiss a guy that refused to help her learn the words to the damn commercial because of her skin and they had the audacity to send her home??
And what makes this worse is that she thinks this is her fault. They sat up there and let her think that her being rightfully angry was wrong and that something was wrong with *her*. This show is disgusting.

Don't forget how they made her cut off all of her hair and she was very upset about it.
The camera crew actually stepped in when the guy tried to do it again. Adrienne talked about it in her Live with Shannon.

She only thought of herself.

This episode is a strong example of how every member of the judging panel was complicit in the mistreatment of the contestants.
And yet these so called judges want to play the victim now that they’re being exposed. 🤔
Agreed
That "person" should have been removed from the set. His actions were unacceptable and the fact they didn't have her back must have been frustrating and demoralizing.
It’s so sad. I think Tyra based a lot of handling of these situations based on her own experiences. I’m sure at some point she was told to suck it up when it came to a racist/sexist situation. And instead of empowering the newer generations to speak up and use their voice, she’s trying to set things back to when she was a model.

I don't think so. If he had used a racial slur, I don't believe Jaeda would have stayed and continued this process. It was bad enough he said he didn't like black girls, but using a racial slur would have been a lot worse. I don't think Jaeda would have allowed this disrespect.
Written correctly will be:
- La única raó per la que tenia una relació seriosa amb el meu xicot és perquè m'agradaven les seves fotos de petit i volia veure com serien els nostres fills.
Translated:
- The only reason why I was in a serious relationship with my boyfriend was because I liked his kid photos and I wanted to see how our children will look like.
I just wanted to point that out, just because catalan is a really small language and all the people in ANTM are butchering it. :'D
PD: I love your videos and your ANTM series
Also Catalan is not more difficult than spanish is just a different language like italian or french. It's is only spoken in a few places in Spain and in Andorra (a tiny contry betwen Spain and France).
It's more like French than Spanish
@@cjPagan87 I would consider it a mixture since of where it’s used. The beauty of language
Misogynoir (Misogny and racism against Black women) is unfortunately something that people always feel way too comfortable in expressing. 😭
Because they set it up that way
the whole " celebrating ur strength " stuff is so performative, they put these girls in positions where they're degraded and dehumanized mocked and laughed at and then they shame the women for not being " diva " enough to overlook racism or sexism
Beautifully said
racism is not 'funny', models are not objects, being a director does not give you all the rights over a human being... i am sad, angry and deeply revolted to see so much contempt, c its a shame from tyra, who i think has long since forgotten where she came from...and who her ancestors are, and what they went through, i am mixed race and my heart bleeds watching this
Am I the only one who has started disliking Tyra more and more seeing these episodes as an adult? First the model being sexually harassed now this 😑 Can we start holding Tyra accountable for how toxic this show was.
I agree!! I used to love Tyra, thought she was so goofy and extra, and loved the Tyra Show. Now I'm like holy cow, what a monster!!

One dancer was sick and went to throw up after her performance, and of course Tyra had to inform the whole world and interview her about it on camera! Like jeez, chill.
@@myranda8933 😂😂😂 why am I not shocked
She does not have to say sorry for crying, everyone cries! 😭😭
Right??? Anybody would cry if they were being forced to kiss someone who insulted them to their face! They took advantage of so many of the models on this show and it’s disgusting.

Let's not pretend that Tyra actually liked Jaida. She just wanted to chop her hair off
I don't think Tyra liked any of the models. I don't even think she likes herself. She doesn't have issues, she has lifetime subscriptions.
Ya Tyra had it out 4 her. I felt that from that moment when she had her cut off all her hair.
So terrible
It seems like Tyra saw a potential rival in Jaida and so she tore her down from day one.

He’s not white.

@@1Dispretty2me my issue is that I don't see it as empowering to present women as focusing all of their energy on a guy and yearning for his attention
Also, according to Eugena the producers would not let anyone switch with Jaeda. But honestly if they really cared, they would have fired that guy!
Oh yeah and according to Caridee they used the TEST shot of her commercial, the very first shot and not any of the other shoots she did, so that’s why she looks so crazy in her commercial. 🙃
Modeling ≠ acting
I never understood why commercials were sometimes an elimination challenge.
I remember this episode so vividly. It was so damaging to my self esteem as a little black girl.
Thank you for making this video. I was a teen when this episode came on and it just taught me there will be workplaces that won't defend you when someone is in the wrong.
I love that your addressing these offenses that have held space in my head since I was 14 lol closure feels so good 👍
This whole show is just abusing women under the guise of “toughening them up” for the modeling industry. Tolerate abuse or be kicked out. Beyond sickening.
That sums it up .

ANTM: “that was unforgivable!”
Also ANTM: * forces a non-consensual kiss with a racist man”
Also, it’s one thing to not be attracted to someone but he refused to help her learn the language as well because he “didn’t like her”
I can't believe how everyone was just okay with her being this uncomfortable during her shoot.
@@tokyoyoongi5538 right
Grooming is the entertainment industry has ALWAYS been toxic and it has ALWAYS existed but they assume the girls will do anything for fame because the greater majority have and always will be willing to do anything for fame.
