      Doors look dope… one small caveat I dunno if you considered this or not. I assume this platform is supposed to sit level with the rest of the landing pad unless you plan to have massive 16 some odd block overhangs. So shouldn’t this need to move up one block when closed and down one block when open so it can hide under the rest of the landing pad?
      Also for the interior view of the door ya have to consider how all these pistons are gonna look unless your gonna make the ceiling also pop flush into place by mirroring the platform to hide the pistons entirely. Think this might also make the door way cooler to see it retract before splitting in the shape of a cross. And if ya mirror it with pop into place ceiling tiles on the other side it would round out the whole design. But hey Whatever ya decide I’m
      Sure it’ll be dope.

      @@dreadcthuhlu8560 just getting started in the video and saw where you are headed ... so late but another option ... use a piston to pull the the 16 wide door back and a set of hinges to raise the door up and 8 blocks in another set of hinges to lower the next section down as well so the door pulls back and accordion folds on both sides ... you now have a 40 block opening ... and you can sit it flat and level with the roof of the overhang ... which allows you to slap a little cafe in the front looking out and in as well .... sort of a truck stop idea
      and dont forget you can Vannila auto track the sun with solar panels and get max power when it shines ... there are several good scripts out there as well BUT using the basic tech you can do it in Vannila with out a script

      piston and rotor heads can be adjusted in and out as well ... they float about 1m total so a piston can be 9m or 11m or some where in between ... same with a rotor ... the actual distance they move is one you will have to check out as it never seems to be the same for everyone ...

    More pistons won't necessarily result in more stability. In fact, due to the magical forces of the Almighty Klang, you could end up making it unpredictably unstable.
    Maybe sharing inertia tensors might help the wobble.
    If you're feeling really adventurous, you could incorporate timers and merge blocks to make the segments merge together into a single grid when the doors are closed.
    Whatever you do, I'm gonna enjoy watching it. Cheers, Skye!

      Merge blocks and pistons are not a good combo.
      Particularly since even when merged, the 4 hangar doors would most likely still be a separate sub-grid, except after the merge now attached by 4 chains of pistons instead of just one each.
      The sudden quadrupling of the mass of the doors is not going to escape Klang's attention for long either ...
      I would advise against it 😁

    Nice Hanger Door contraption:
    Choose 3 pistons in each axis and lower their speed just a notch in a staggered way.
    For example -0.1/-0.2/-0.3
    This way the pistons will have a smoother start and finish when they move. This will eliminate the jiggle.

    You could use some timer and event blocks to slow the speed when the door gets close to its final open/close position.

  • @andrewchapman2039
    @andrewchapman2039 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    One idea you could put in to stop the wibbling is to have merge blocks on the door so it absolutely clamps into position when it's stretched out properly. Gotta be careful that it doesn't get merged directly onto a stationary grid though, or you'll have a hell of a time getting it to move again. You could also try mag plates, for a bit of a simpler implementation.

  • @Telowin
    @Telowin วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    Blocks don't flex, pistons do. Adding the half blocks only added more weight to flex the pistons further. If you want stable you can keep the sloped edges and add a merge block to each edge of the door to lock it to the other doors. Make a timer block to unmerge first action then reverse the pistons. Could even put an opposite set on the outer edge of the door and the inner edge of your structure to lock them stable when open

  • @Flynmn
    @Flynmn วันที่ผ่านมา +4

    For a slope to the hangar doors while keeping them full blocks you could use sloped armour plates for the slope since they are thin and wont have much surface area touching the door while it moves the only problem with them is the fact they don't match actual blocks fully.

    there is a setting on Pistons called "Max Impulse Axis" and "Max impulse NonAxis" that is the Strength of the pistons ability to resist being pushed or pulled the Axis one is for the direction that the pistons extend or retract, and the NonAxis is for resisting movement perpendicular to the extending and retracting direction.
    what you can do is add more newtons to those 2 values to make the doors not wobble as much when starting and stoping, though the safe limits are 100000 for both they can be turned up far higher, at the rist of damaging blocks the subgrid comes into contact with.
    and another note: i do beleave the piston heads are 20cm in thickness, if i recall correctly that is ^^

    Personal styling, I would have put 1 piston facing up at teh end and had it max out at 2.5 meters (single block grid and put in event controllers to trigger the assembly to shift down, then out. This would mean the entry doors sit level with the dock, then shift down and under the dock when open.

      Merge blocks can work, but for people reading, please be careful with merge blocks as they can permanently fuse two grids together when they have certain kinds of blocks along their edges! Check the wiki for the exact behaviour and test in creative first!
      Also in this scenario if one were to merge the hangar doors it would also be a good idea to connect them to the rest of the station in their closed and open positions with magnetic landing pads or merge blocks to increase the stability of the setup.

    Yep, the change by one tile in one direction means a complete shift, just like when putting in an outlet or plumbing in a drain. People that don't know how things work inside the walls will ask for a 1 inch move, which is a much bigger ask than a 15 or 17 inch move. To them it is small, but it is really a rather big job. Being a little kid explaining this to your parents when you are doing the electrical or plumbing for them makes it that much harder as kids aren't taken seriously and parents see the younger version of you unless something big shifts that.

    I still think that sliding doors are NOT the answer. While the back doors will slide into the mountain, the front doors sliding under something results in a lot of unutilized tarmac. It just looks like a wierd stripe next to your entrance that doesn't belong there. It's just something that wouldn't fit a space theme, they would make use of the topography instead of slapping so much metal on the side of the asteriod. It just overhangs too much. If it was both sides sliding into the rock it would be no problem at all, but it looks like it will just stick out too much.
    According to other comments there are hinges, you could try to build a shutter door that bends around the corner to minimize the space. Not sure how they work exactly since I don't play the game, but the movement of the door is still simple pistons, attached on the side at the last blocks of the door and then just a bunch of timers for the bending? Or if there is the posibility of outputting the positions of the pistons plus logic blocks it's not that hard to make something that can deal with interrupting the opening/closing process by pressing the button again, which timers will not be capable of. Depending on how the hinges look it would also add some texture/griebling to the doors.

    • @capdyn735
      @capdyn735 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It is possible to do a door with hinges and pistons but it would be very unstable since the game's physics engine doesn't like such things. Setting it up would also take a lot of work as each piston and hinge has to be individually set up and the game is fairly limited when it comes to logic blocks (though one could use scripts).
      So it's probably one of those cool but impractical ideas.

    To figure out the length of the retracted piston, build a "C" shaped frame where the inside of the "C" is greater that the length of the retracted piston by a block or so. Mount the piston on the inside bottom of the "C" and extend it until it hits the inside top. Check the "Current Position" and subtract that from the known inside length of the "C" frame and that should be its retracted length. That sounds like it should work and would only take a minute or two to build. For higher accuracy, stack 10 pistons inside a longer "C" and extend just the last piston and check its "Current position" minus "C" frame length divided by 10.

I have seen someone make a ship to eat astroids. It was long and skinny. It opened up in the front and had rows of drills that rotated. The part that opened had to have been several thousand tons. The ship was an entire factory for processing stone, and ores. It all ran off reactors, but used H2 as a backup. There is a TH-cam video that shows it operating, but not being built.
