Nintendo did actually just send you parts back in the day. When I was 13 I got the GBA when it launched then immediately got the screen punched in by some kid at summer camp. I just sent Nintendo a well worded letter, then 2 weeks later they sent me a screen repair kit and a thank you for spending my hard earned allowance on Nintendo products... For free. To a 13 year old. Addressed to his bunk at summer camp.
Honestly, if a company responded within a day with "we're sending a replacement part immediately," no shipping charge, no other hassle, I'd actually be pretty happy. That seems fine, that seems like a nice standard to just implement widely.
Yeah Retroid is pretty good about this, but after getting replacement parts for every Retroid device I've bought (due to hardware failure out of the box, including screens, thumbsticks etc) I feel like I should be on payroll with how often I'm reassembling their products. That being said I had to RMA my first steam deck for screen and non-functional LB, so...
I'll comment on my experience, I fucked up and broke my screen on my Flip by sitting on it wrong. Was my bad, so I asked how to go about replacing it. Two emails, 35 dollars, and 1 week later I was sent a video and a new screen which took 5 minutes to replace. Fantastic customer service.
It's a hobbyist brand. So I don't think it's a big deal to have us repair things ourselves if they're willing to send us the parts free of charge. But of course give the option for a free replacement.
Yeah, he really seemed to be complaining and then a second later was like "Yeah and they responded in 30 minutes, are active on socials and address problems but I didn't get it the next day so it's bad customer service." Also the reason there's more "work" to put emulators and games on the device is because it pulls liability away from they and puts it on us as customers. A company can be sued easily but hundreds of thousands of individual people can't be. You'd think he'd know that? I'm actually really disappointed with his lack of knowledge and real baseless complaints considering the track record of the company, their customer support and the fact that their relatively new and one a few leaders in the market.

Just got mine two days ago, have been very impressed. No problems with the RT, yet lol. Metal Gear 3 and Peacewalkers were two of the first games I tested, both run beautifully! Midnight Club 3 on PS2 runs great with slight 2-3 fps drops here and there. Only game I've really had issues with is Sly 2, but that's notorious for bad emulation, even on PC. Its far better than the previous iterations of RP's, of which I have a couple. I have been playing Wii games on it so it goes past just GameCube for playable performance. You can 2x most GameCube games on it and nearly 2x PS2 (1.75x). Sometimes the problem is not the hardware it can be the emulator, some were really geared for certain chipsets, of which the RP's isn’t really one. As always Bob I appreciate your honesty. I only have one Retroid product but after watching your video I'm slightly paranoid about whether or not all my buttons work, so I'm going to test each one tonight. :)
Something that I don't see much is how BAD the screen can look. It's supposed to be the same one as the 3+, but the firmware must be buggy because it has a lot more ghosting, magenta trails on high contrast zone (like Game Box, with black on white) and the V-Sync is broken, so there's stuttering evey few seconds that can be quite annoying. It's probably things that can be solved with an OTA update (could also be bad panels, who knows), but keep that in mind.
I ordered and got a Retroid Pocket 2s a few months back that came with a (known, according to other reviews) problem with the screen... Haven't had the time to complain to them yet as part of me knows they will send me parts and say fix it yourself. They really need to work on QA as the device is good otherwise, just sucks came faulty. Not sure if worth hassle in long run as i agree with Bob stuff shouldn't come broken in the first place & then be told fix it yourself!
think it's worth mentioning that the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro probably isn't going to be replaced instantly and they've learned their lesson from the 3 and 3+, because they announced the 4 Pro and weaker 4 at the same time and sold the 4 Pro first.
Yeah, it seems like a lot of companies in this space assume that if you buy their products that you're a tinkerer and thus they can be a bit sloppy with their products because you'll "figure it out". Thing is, they're not exactly wrong about us being tinkerers, but, that's primarily about the software. We kind of prefer it if the hardware didn't develop issues either out of the box or within weeks of arrival, as a baseline. So yeah, I definitely recommend waiting a few months when it comes to buying Retroid products. Wulff, your honorable sacrifice is duly noted and appreciated.
I also had problems with the triggers, I'm waiting for them to send a replacement backplate as they said, thank you for the sincerity of your review you were one of the few who mentioned this serious problem and for 200 dollars this shouldn't happen, I value my money
"Imagine if it was a nintendo product and a thumbstick doesn't work" - my attempts to contact Nintendo about my non-working JoyCons resulted in their recommendation that I buy new JoyCons. If they'd sent me the hall sticks I ultimately ended up buying instead, I'd have been overjoyed.
You says "Slight spec bump", check the benchmarks: Antutu 10: RP3+: 272.445 RP4Pro: 756.061 That's 2.77 times better performance. GeekBench 6: RP3+: 1.465 RP4Pro: 3.343 That's 2.28 times better performance. ComputeScore: RP3+: 1.041 RP4Pro: 4.704 That's 4.51 times better performance. You just can't be taken seriously this way.
I'm tempted to get a RP3+, mainly because I'm more interested on PSP emulation, maybe Dreamcast as the heaviest system, but I'll definitely wait a few months to see how the RP4Pro turns out after some of the kinks get ironed out.
ive been using the rg35xx + and im loving it, I'm planning to bring it to PAX east this year as my only console. Though I wish it could play dreamcast just a little bit better, I would love the form factor of the xx+ and the power of the pocket 4 XD
I've still got my RP3+ which is good enough for me to play from Master System to PSP and Gamecube. Yeah the button layouts are rubbish but it'll do for now, so it's not worth the upgrade yet until Retroid or Anbernic finally release a handheld that is absolutely capable of smooth PS2 gameplay at full FPS.
Watching this in Sep 2024 and the unit has matured like a fine wine. Currently running EmulationStation and overall rounds out an otherwise fantastic value to performance ratio offering.
I honestly do not know why anyone would want to buy anything from this company....they obviously have no idea what the word "quality" means. They go as cheap as they can and when that approach fails them, they make excuses and never fix anything properly. Going too low can and will end in failure. I'd pay $20 more for it if they actually did the slightest amount of product testing prior to launching one of these darn contraptions....but that's not their business model. It can be the best at emulating out there, it's useless if it can't even stay together out of the gate. Great review, Bob, you're the only one who actually said something about the poor quality as part of your review, and it's appreciated.
I know what you mean. I have had a RP3+ with no issues for months, but now am having an issue with my screen. That being said - what else are you going to get? Anbernic as their own problems. It seems to me this is the "cost" of these types of devices.
to anyone looking at this review recently after 3 to 4 months, they have fixed the trigger issue and they have also fixed the screen problem too! I got my unit recently after chinese new year and its amazing with no issues at all.
I just received my RP4 pro just a few days ago. So far, there was no issue. My only concern is that the display has a green tint that is fixed on the software side. I don't know if it'll have long-term consequences. Also, I wish it had bypass/pass through charging; high performance mode is really taxing on battery. Considering Ayn has access to Snapdragon and the upcoming Pocket S will use one as well, hopefully the next RP will have a Snapdragon.
Idk man I have the rp3+ and I just don't play it anymore after getting a steam deck. I would ultimately say say ur money $300+ and get something that will last longer
Cann’t tell you how excited I am to see you do a video on this. Just 2 days ago i was recommended a review video on the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro and to my amazement it handles Wii, GameCube, and PS2 games pretty well. I have been waiting for something that can handle that plus DS 3DS Vita and PSP games all for an affordable price. After watching a few more reviews from other people i determined that i wanted one and will order it right after Chinese New Year since Retroid isn’t shipping until after the holiday. The second i saw your tweet about this i immediately hoped on TH-cam to watch because even after watching at least 5 hours on this item I will always watch your tech reviews because i trust your opinion on items. Haven’t led me astray yet and i cant wait to see what you say. Thank you Bob.

Boy I could not be happier with mine, Im not having any trigger issues by now. It is a device made for people that like tweakings things though. Setting a frontend, configuring every emulator, knowing wich version of them works better in wich scenarios, and all that. Gc and wii runs almost anything at 2x with even hd textures. Ps2 is hit or miss due to the emulator development stop. And switch can mature a little bit. Metroid dread runs at full speed with skyline with no tweaking or whatsoever. Gotta say, they did take a while to ship mine. And yeah, playing games that require using 2 sticks can be not so comfortable, so the oficial grip works very well, it is almost a must need for those games. (Can confirm it)
Didn't the 3 or 3+ include the rubber membrane at first because it shipped with dome?? Not that it was prone to having a broken home button? I remember that Taki complained about that quite a bit the rubber membrane was gone...
Yes. This isn’t the first time I’ve caught a bit of misinfo in one of bobs videos. It’s why I don’t subscribe. I find retro game corps and taki udon to be far more in depth. For want of a better term I regard this as a “normie” tech review channel.
Just got my 4 Pro and I have the same trigger issue you showed in this video! Did the replacement backplate fix the issue? How was the install process?
As much as I want a retroid pocket 4 I feel like spending a little bit extra for a Steam deck would be a better deal considering it does everything this can do and much more. Makes it a hard sell.
@@toycoma98 Yeah I keep hearing their different "use cases" but keep noticing that they're both handhelds. All I'm saying is that the Steam Deck does everything this can do PLUS play my Steam library. I don't care if it's bigger. It can do wayyy more.
I love my Pocket Flip, but I can't with these 16:9 screens that are mostly good for 4:3 gameplay. Even with the extra power, GameCube, PS2, and Dreamcast are still best enjoyed at 4:3. It just seems like a lot of mostly unused surface area. I would much rather have a 4.5-inch or 5-inch 4:3 screen on this.
This is too safe of an upgrade. Took the 3+ and added 2s controls + a faster processor. Turned this into a cloud streaming device. The flip, RGB30, and ARC were exciting. We need something exciting in 2024. The only thing I see is the Miyoo Mini Flip. We'll see.
When i was first looking into Emulation Handheld, i was immediately drawn in by the look of the Retroid Pocket, but the fact they keep doing revisions scared me off from them and almost kept me from entering the hobby. Still am interested in the Pocket 4, but haven't been able to justify it
I wish this had more power. The form factor and SIZE in particular is very appealing. My Odin 2 is amazing, but it's just too big. It only fits in my inside jacket pocket, but not my pants.

They really need to work on QA as the device is good otherwise, just sucks came faulty.
Not sure if worth hassle in long run as i agree with Bob stuff shouldn't come broken in the first place & then be told fix it yourself!
You won me over with the effort you put into your commercial, sponsor. Great video also save me money as I'll be skipping this device. Take this sub.
I don't buy anything shown in your video but I enjoy every bit of your videos ....❤
Mine arrived with no issue. I watched a setup video and ive got everything i want working well. Worth every penny imo
How long did it take you to get your from pressing the pay now button to your doorstep? I just put my order in on the 7th.
@MEDiumInc it will get to you, just be patient.
@@F0r3v3rT0m0rr0w allegedly it should be here today. We shall see.
I want this but the retroid pocket 5 pro will be out next week 😂
think it's worth mentioning that the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro probably isn't going to be replaced instantly and they've learned their lesson from the 3 and 3+, because they announced the 4 Pro and weaker 4 at the same time and sold the 4 Pro first.
So far I expect the inevitable RP4+ or RP flip 2 to have, at least:
1) proper screen; 2) fixed RT; 3) LEFT STICK ON TOP.
This is exactly why i am still not the early adopter of these new handhelds, i am rocking my Switch Oled
as a person who loves taking apart things this customer service is instant love
I also had problems with the triggers, I'm waiting for them to send a replacement backplate as they said, thank you for the sincerity of your review you were one of the few who mentioned this serious problem and for 200 dollars this shouldn't happen, I value my money
I like how you're the single biggest vocal critic of Retroid I've seen on this site, yet you still have a lot of positive stuff to say about them lol.
🎵LET'S GET DOWN TO BUSINESS, AND CONSUME, THE SOY!
2:38 a VERY rare Bob Wulff bussin’ it down 😂
I just love your raw, honest take on everything. Legend
I just got mine today, excited!
whats exciting is that these handhelds are getting better and better. we are 2? generations away from perfect gc emulation on a handheld

Not youtube playing an ad during your ad read 😭
Because of COURSE you're sponsored by soylent. Joke writes itself
i wish the screen was a tad bit bigger. i'd seriously consider getting one.
Great Job as usual with your ads - your channel has the best in programming ads bar none

You says "Slight spec bump", check the benchmarks:
Antutu 10: RP3+: 272.445 RP4Pro: 756.061 That's 2.77 times better performance.
GeekBench 6: RP3+: 1.465 RP4Pro: 3.343 That's 2.28 times better performance.
ComputeScore: RP3+: 1.041 RP4Pro: 4.704 That's 4.51 times better performance.
You just can't be taken seriously this way.
Bob does such a good job with the add reads it makes me mad that no one else puts any effort into them
Soylent will have you looking like skin and bones, just like this man here. Buy today!
I'm tempted to get a RP3+, mainly because I'm more interested on PSP emulation, maybe Dreamcast as the heaviest system, but I'll definitely wait a few months to see how the RP4Pro turns out after some of the kinks get ironed out.
Finally. Been waiting to see what you'd say about the RP4. Let's see....
....and I guess I'll wait and see what the AyaNeo Pocket S will be like.
You a funny dude. 😂 I still have my rp4 pro in the box. Been playing my Odin 2
Bob, I love you man, but I'm not going to eat Soylent and live in a pod.
ive been using the rg35xx + and im loving it, I'm planning to bring it to PAX east this year as my only console. Though I wish it could play dreamcast just a little bit better, I would love the form factor of the xx+ and the power of the pocket 4 XD
Soylent's green flavor is unironically the best. I'm still searching for the best retro game emulation console though.
The only that can do without problems is the Odin 2!😊
Watching this in Sep 2024 and the unit has matured like a fine wine. Currently running EmulationStation and overall rounds out an otherwise fantastic value to performance ratio offering.
Your friend has NO POINT. Even drug dealers test purity of cocaine before selling.
Speaking from experience? 😂😂😂 Jk jk
I'll wait for the next one, hopefully with a bit more power.
It is hilarious that a food company would name themselves Soylent. Clearly no one there ever saw Soylent Green!
Irony is a poisoned well these days. Thanks marketing
That's why I like your channel. For the truth. Thanks!
Bob out here with the old school cool way to draw an S easter egg on the fridge
This is why I let folks like y'all go through the growing pains. I'll swoop in later :D
to anyone looking at this review recently after 3 to 4 months, they have fixed the trigger issue and they have also fixed the screen problem too!
Retroid is the reason why I dont trust Taki Udon for reviews. Dude shilled pretty hard since the pocket 3.
Damn dude I have been interested in emulation lately and you channel has just been it lol
My main handheld other then my switch was a psvita which just died, I plan on just saving up and buying one of these exactly now
With that Ad I felt like I was in a Futurama episode xD
Idk man I have the rp3+ and I just don't play it anymore after getting a steam deck. I would ultimately say say ur money $300+ and get something that will last longer
as soon as i saw the ad segment for soylent i got flashbacks to the AntVenom incident...
I will never buy another Retroid device again. The Retroid Pocket 2+ had so many issues.
Can I ask what makes you interested in this over getting a steamdeck and having a wider range of emulators?
@@richthepup absolutely… it’s the price. I think a steam deck starts at 400 bucks (could be wrong) and this is half the price and I believe, most if not all the games I’m interested in playing work fairly well on the 4 pro. Dont get me wrong if I could get a steam deck for 200 bucks I’d be all over it haha.
“I can’t pull the trigger. Mine is f*cking broken.” LOL Bob
Every time I watch a video about the retro pocket from this guy it's always bad news and the bad news outweights the good news. Is the retro pocket even good in general lol?
Your sponsor placements are ones I don’t skip. Always top tier 👏🏽
I built a desktop for $100 for PS2 and Switch emulation. It does it well and upscaled :)
Soylent commercial 😂😂😂 this guy definitely seems the type
Oh my god the $4 off loyalty coupon. What an amazing company
The same thing happened to me! I swore I ordered the clear one, but I got the 16-bit one. Same deal, checked my order it says the 16-bit one. But, I put it to a vote with my kids and we decided to get the clear one. I just thought I stuffed up. Maybe, there is some shenanigans going on...
Damn it's crazy to hear an experience like this. I haven't had any issues with the RP3+ and the Flip. Not one problem. Guess I got lucky? Lol idk
I been a fan of Soylent since back when they only offered powered.
Looks interesting, however, I think I'm still jonzing for a Steam Deck OLED.
In paid ad interrupted by TH-cam ad. Can’t make this stuff up lol. 😮
Am I the only one with anxiety who has for some reason latched on to Bob's videos as a way to keep my mind from wandering into the sad? I mainly listen to Bob in my pocket at work and it's literally the best 😅
Yeah his content is comfortable. He has a bajillion reviews on similar handheld devices, so it's like a perfect blend of derivative content that doesn't get boring.
oh my god, i’m like having panic attack after panic attack, just now i’ve decided to try to watch something to get my mind off of it. i hope I too find some peace in his videos, i’ve always loved his stuff
Bob for Best Cozy Gamer of 2024???
Big brother energy imo
I feel the same way!
(Can confirm it)
Yeah its me again. R2 issue appeared. Will try to fix it when i have time
Didn't the 3 or 3+ include the rubber membrane at first because it shipped with dome??
Steam deck is a completely different use case.
The steam deck is like 4 times the size of this thing
Idgaf im gonna whip out my steam deck where I please and play retroarch or any of my 1500 steam games@@pobbityboppity1110
Steam deck is HUGE, different os. They are not in the same category sir.
This is how I feel. I was excited about anbernics rg405M for that reason but the chipset wasn't powerful enough.
@@ninjason57 Yeah, and the d-pad placement got SNUBBED
Really hoping we'll get a new 3:2 handheld, probably the best all-rounder
Nice B-roll shots with the iPhone
I'm in well overdue for a retro pocket upgrade. I still got the first Gen I think I might get this one😊
This whole video made me think, "Man, that 299 price tag on the Odin 2 is sounding great right about now!" lmao
Still am interested in the Pocket 4, but haven't been able to justify it
Soylent Green is people!
Retroid showing you younglings a lil elbow grease ain't ever killed anybody
I wish this had more power. The form factor and SIZE in particular is very appealing.
My Odin 2 is amazing, but it's just too big. It only fits in my inside jacket pocket, but not my pants.
