  • Friday afternoon I caught ELS 501 and ELS 503 under US-2 heading towards Iron Mountain, MI where the accident happened Thursday. After catching them on a bridge, I drove to where the van hit the train and then to East Kingsford. The day of the "accident" ELS 501 was long hood forward, but in this video they appeared to have changed direction in Channing, MI where the Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad has a depot and Y.

Really cool video from the bridge. Karens need to find something worthwhile to do! What you do is your own business. If this particular Karen doesn't like you or your videos, why on earth does she take the time to watch them? Nobody is forcing her to. As for train horns, they should blow at every crossing because there are people who are too busy yakking to passengers, yapping on the phone, or have the radio on. Truth be told, most railroad tracks were there before houses and businesses.

A no-horn quiet zone with a blind crossing like that is stupid and reckless on the part of local government. Perhaps it's time for the politicians to re-evaluate the priorities. Do trains even run on that little branch line at night? A horn in the daytime isn't that much of an annoyance.

alot of towns nowadays do not like HORNS going through there towns. Cause, they think its too loud going through there town. And, only thing trains can do is have that BELL going off. It's not enough. I say, if they get hurt cause the towns/city take the horns away. It's on the people that do not stop. trains needs these horns to make people hear these trains coming through.

If the town doesn't want train horns, which I do understand they can choose, perhaps they should have barriers on the crossings as well. No excuses then for traffic not stopping. The bottom line is trains have the right of way. That's a federal law. Sometimes, a train will accelerate through a crossing with a vehicle on it to minimize the damage or prevent a catastrophic derailment. Trains cannot stop in time for motorists at crossings or trespassers on the tracks. A freight train traveling at 55 MPH can take a mile to come to a complete stop. An automobile can stop at only 200 feet at that same speed. It's a simple matter of physics: the heavier the object, the longer the stopping distance. In addition, the contact surface between a train's steel wheels and the steel rails is only the size of a dime! That results in little friction created compared to an automobile with rubber tires on asphalt or concrete. Karen should do her research before making stupid comments. It's up to the car's driver to know they are crossing railroad tracks. That car got hit because the driver was being oblivious to their surroundings. Maybe there was no horn, but how do you miss flashing lights with warning bells in such an isolated area?

    • @kaseyaldrich4746
      @kaseyaldrich4746 ปีที่แล้ว

If you speed up, that’s called charging a crossing, and depending on what your warning time was, you can chase ALOT more issue than realized.

I would argue that a train horn would make a difference. That’s why trains, cars, trucks, etc., have horns. They are a significant part of the safety mechanisms required by the Department of Transportation. The horn's primary purpose is to alert persons and animals to an oncoming train, especially when approaching a level crossing. Federal regulation requires locomotive horns to be sounded for 15-20 seconds before entering all public grade crossings but not more than one-quarter mile in advance. There is a reason for this law. But again, there is a working signal crossing, and when it goes off, it means stop, not accelerate.

Jason: Some people just don't understand the passion we have for trains. I don't watch a lot of your videos, because I think the ELS has poor RR practices. But this video did catch my eye. I see two major problems, that may have contributed to the accident, from watching this video. The first is the signal timing: Signal timing is based on track speed, there is way too much time between the time the signals start and the time the engine enters the crossing. The signals timing was probably set by the SOO when they ran at a faster speed, the track was in better shape, but at the slower speed that the ELS operates at, drivers have or think they have time to beat the train. Secondly, is the total lack of enforcement by the Iron Mt. Police. When I worked we had the 3 E's Engineering, Education, and Enforcement . I'm sure this will get some comments BILL

      Two comments, Bill.
First, the track is ex-MILW and was sold off before the merger between the SOO & MILW.
Second, grade crossing signals have gone through several different development stages over the decades. Not all crossings are set up the same way. Yes, the most modern ones are based on the speed of the train. However, older crossings just use a fixed distance from the crossing and do not account for the speed of the train.
The last figure I've seen for replacing a grade crossing equipment was a cool million a crossing.
There are several ways a crossing is set up and activated by the train and for a more in-depth dive on this subject may I point you to: th-cam.com/video/4qdti3atxpw/w-d-xo.html by Danny of Distant Signal.

Both are mostly correct. But at the end of the day, a crossing is designed with track speed in mind. It’s all apart of the warning time equation. It’s why we do yearly tests, and warning time is a big part of that.
It’s really not all that complicated, yes sometimes gates will drop, they can drop and recover if a train stops as long as it’s not in the island. Believe it or not, the crossings are pretty sophisticated and it’s a serious job.

Don't worry about what people say about you need to get a job, this U-tub channel some day, maybe even today, might make you more money than a job will ever be able to pay you, but even if it never would or could, it quite frankly none of there blanking business anyways, if you like doing it, and your wife doesn't mind you doing it, it's your own business, if you like, or love doing it, keep doing it. I think that some day, if not already today you will make alot of money at doing it. That might also be why some of the railroad people don't like you filming there railroad, because, you are making money off of there railroad, with your videos, and they, the railroad, aren't making any money off of your videos of there railroad. Love your videos! So far as tripods go, have you ever tried to use just the one legged camera holders, I can't call those things tripods, I don't know what you would call them, uni-pod holders, I don't know, it might help hold the camera while you just hold the camera steady. Anyhow, I don't know if it will help, the information I mean, but really like your videos keep them coming, I hope, and always remember to have fun with your videos too, for if a man loves his work, he will never work another day in his life!!! Take care now!

I might agree with her comment on "Sick Fetish For Trains"! " Sick" in the fact that you love trains and love to video them (Job or no job)! As far as trying to blame ELS, I've seen enough of your videos showing that there is always a guy flagging the road when the signals are out and the train comes to a complete stop! Actually, I was expected to see that Mike character make a statement that you told the driver to crash into the train, just so that you could record it! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Well, sometimes accidents do occur… but statistics says otherwise. Most incidents involving motor vehicles are caused by (in no particular order): distractions, drugs/booze, drowsiness, emotional/anger issues, or failing to properly maintain the vehicle. Whoever this karen in should realize that Jason already has a life and a job. Maybe she needs a hobby… like photography. Or railfanning. 🤣

Jason: Lets see if we can put a upbeat spin on this. At 70 years old, I have been taking photos of trains, long before I went to work for a RR. Let educate the Karens. This Karen has taken to social media and can do damage to our hobby. I have been told that there are about 20,000 railfan in the world, a number I think is low. A railfan that I have known for 30 years, spends over 10,000 dollars every year. Now thats a passion, travels to a foreign country every other year, trades in his car every two years and has had over 50 photos published.. Don't Ban her, reach out to her. Railfanning is getting harder and harder, every year since 9/11.. Just my thoughts Bill
