The Railroads are the only transportation system that has to maintain all of it's own right of way and track. The roads are maintained by the government and the River traffic is maintained by the Government through the lock and Dam System. When I worked for the ICG back in the 70s it was not uncommon to see track from the late 1800s being used on remote sidings. As all of the industries have moved overseas a lot of the rail system has been abandoned and taken up. The industries that they used to serve is no longer there!
@Delbert Reno , yes that track was very bad... Not all of the industries have moved overseas from the Continental U.S. , but the ones that have, made it tough to compete for the remaining industries here in the U.S. , and things like this become the end result... That track looks normal. The outfit I used to work for, the track gang would take a few ties out, turn them over and respite the rails. One time I watched them stick wooden plugs in the spike holes and hammer the spikes back in. One guy told me that the ties had been flipped over 3 times already, and since they didn’t have any new ties, this is what they did. We used to have 3 derailments in an 8 hour shift.( could be 4 cars for one derailment) The company laid off all the track gang, and brought in outside contractors. They laid 2 miles of track with new ballast, rails and ties. I was there when conrail came in with the first train. As soon as the locomotive cleared the switch, it derailed. They blocked it back on, put gauge rod and respiked the rail. As soon as the locomotive cleared the respiked spot, it derailed again. Now the contractor took the gauge rod down the track. Every place he put it, it fell! Unreal!

At 10:29 you zoomed in on a few joints. The first joint, ( the most left one ) is moving up and down which is normal. The rail is still spiked to the ties. But the section of track starting just ahead of the second joint and between the second and third joint is not spiked to the ties. When it jumps up the ties stay in place. I can see at least one spike that is almost fully out of the tie and several more sticking up. If much more of that section becomes unspiked the rail would probably roll over. That will defiantly result in a derailment, when the track rolls over. The track really needs some attention from a MOW track gang.
