@@scottawes921Only half true. Just as with education, views of things, and personality/character, and all other things, parents and upbringing are only 50% of the equation. The other half is the soul you are that's driving the meatsuit you are in. Being exposed to a thing's existence is of course often from parents, but actually liking the thing is a whole different matter. My tastes and affinities and hates have never had anything to do with what other people think of something. I have always liked Frank Sinatra and The Rat Pack while no one else in my family ever has. There are a lot of modern songs they like that I can't stand. I like amd hate music dating back to the 700's. And no, that's not a typo where I forgot the 1. And honestly, I don't think anyone alive has ever hated this song since it came out.
True story. About 10 years ago, my girlfiend (intentionally misspelled) and I were on a snorkel trip out of Lands End, Cabo San Lucas. Catamaran with about 50 people on it, probably half a dozen nationalities, hence half a different languages being spoken. They jam tunes out to the snorkel site. We get in the water, snorkel for about an hour then back on the boat for the booze cruise back to the marina. This song comes on and, I'm not kidding you, everyone on that boat, no matter what language they spoke, knew every word to this song and all 50 of us or so, rocked it out. Awesome! One of the coolest expereiences of a very well lived life - get out and do stuff people!

One of the greatest songs to come out of the '70s IMO. I did my years in bands, and "Play That Funky Music" was one of those rare songs that I never, ever got tired of playing. Didn't matter if it was a wedding reception or a grungy dive bar; the audience ALWAYS got up and danced their asses off. Great times!
I’m convinced that this was just a really creative way to drop the f-bomb on the 1976 radio, I can’t hear that chorus any other way.

Fun fact: The original working title for this song was "Play That *Fucking* Music White Boy". However the producers and label record strongly advised such a thing. The band was upset with the decision and instead of rebellion, they I kid you not, low keyed the F Bomb to Funky. However in the recording booth they were to slightly tilt the F Bomb to Funky as their form of protest. So first shout will be Funky and the second is Fucking and the third is Fucking 😅

Any other drummers out there that caught that wild high hat swish right after each roll? I played this over and over until I got it right when I was 10. It helped me develop my skills for all these years of the joy of drumming.
