On August 2, 1991, singer Rick James was arrested along with girlfriend for imprisoning and torturing a 24-year-old woman. James threatened Alley with a gun and told her he would shoot her if she tried to flee. He and his girlfriend then tied her up and burned her about 20 times with the crack pipe. They also sexually abused her and forced her to smoke crack. In 1993, while James was out on bail for the August 2 incident, James assaulted music executive Mary Sauger in West Hollywood. YaqoHomo no rick james didnt bro do yr history hammer sampled this from rick &it was did the correct way so no one was ripped off this was done the right way. Thank u knw wht ur talkn about next time
I worked at Studio 54 in the early 1980's after its reopening. There was a long play dance version of Super Freak about 30-40 minutes long that got the crowd grooving and the snow falling. DJs would play it late into the night, after 2 am. It was doubly mind-blowing when I would see Rick James himself show up with his entourage of like 6-7 peeps floating all around him. That was quite often, in fact the staff made jokes about how often he came around.
More than forty years later, this song is still memorable and fascinating. It's got a great arrangement of the instruments, the lyrics are great as well as tongue-in-cheek, and it obviously pays homage to the old do-wop and Motown groups. At the same time, it is an awesome blend of disco, funk, and rock 'n' roll. It's accompanying video is entertaining as well; once again, I would say it's tongue-in-cheek. Rick James was of course, one-of-a-kind as far as music is concerned. Rest in peace Rick, and I hope to meet you in the afterlife.
@@GermanicJennifer Are you serious? Do you think we should go back to the norms and standards where everything sexual was kept behind closed doors, including ABUSE? When a woman or child who tried to report it was either not believed or assumed to have "provoked" it? When it wasn't even illegal for a man to do that to his wife? There are still places on Earth you can move to that carry on pre-Sexual Revolution norms and standards if you like, but I suspect you would not find it such a happy haven, unless you're a man and a sick-minded one at that.

I'm sorry Shelley but you're misinformed, 'U Can't Touch This' was released in 1990, and 'Super Freak' is actually from 1981! Or did you just mean it's what you'd heard first? Same for me, I also didn't know this one when MC Hammer made it big back then.

Never mind the new wave girls, let's just focus on that Ricky bass. The bass playing on this is next level, the grace notes, the deep funky, all of it. And all power to Rick for making it a visual centrepiece of the video.

Bowie and Crosby sing X Mas tunes.
I like Rick James music.
Oh man I'm so glad I discovered 70s and 80s music. I missed a legendary era.
It was great being there at the time!
Same bro
It makes me so mad when people think Rick ripped this off from Mc Hammer. LOOK AT THE FUCKING DESCRIPTION! THIS SONG CAME OUT IN 1981 AND CANT TOUCH THIS CAME OUT IN 1990.
pisses me off every time
Chickenwinger bro he did rip it off from Hammer. shameless.
We need to give them a brief history lesson.
YaqoHomo no rick james didnt bro do yr history hammer sampled this from rick &it was did the correct way so no one was ripped off this was done the right way. Thank u knw wht ur talkn about next time
Chickenwinger bro Dude, I woudnt, anybody who thinks that has to be retarded. You can tell just by listening which song is older
That was quite often, in fact the staff made jokes about how often he came around.
what an amazing life expierence haha.
Ooh I wonder if that mix is flouting around still? It would be awesome to listen to it
I know exactly the one. It’s fantastic, in fact that’s how I ended up here, I was looking for it.
What a great experience. Thank you for sharing it.
Did you see Charlie Murphy?

He kidnapped someone lol I don't think he's in heaven.
DRIVING A BEAUTIFUL 1976 CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO LOW RIDER AND JAMMING OUT TO THIS SONG ! PRICELESS !
And The Temptations on backing vocals too 🎉
And kind of scary, Liminal and dream core
Well said, I was a huge fan of RJ’s music in the 80s and still am now, it has stood the test of time. I think his work is underrated.
Its wild to think this was once considered too provocative for TV considering what we see in almost every video today.
Yes and apparently incense, wine, and candles was such a freaky scene.
It paved the way.
It shows how degenerate society has become, it’s like all boundaries, standards and norms have been discarded…sad really.
Not many music videos on TV anymore
"Cocaine is a hell of a drug" - Rick James
Im Rick James bitch!
@@rastas_4221 Well it's an actual quote from Rick James on the BET award.
@@rastas_4221 It's a quote from the man himself but people quote Chappelle because he is solid gold. If he can't handle the attention for being amazing then idk what to say.

Adults play Fortnite too and I would wager that most of the people who play Festival are on the older side. They are the ones with nostalgia for rhythm games (Guitar Hero, Rock Band) that Festival is based on.
This song was THE SHIT when it came out!!!

Ricky James was a special breed of an artist... Good looking, stylish, cool, sexy, funny, crazy and a total boss! Just notice the little sniff he gives at 0:11!!

Actually... they didn't even bother to ask James at first ; )
I'm sorry Shelley but you're misinformed, 'U Can't Touch This' was released in 1990, and 'Super Freak' is actually from 1981!
Or did you just mean it's what you'd heard first? Same for me, I also didn't know this one when MC Hammer made it big back then.
DerEchteBold he was sayin MC took Ricks shit.
when I was about 4 years old my dad had an 80s pop cd and this was the 1st track on that cd and everytime we would come home from a family get together we.would be blasting this song all the way home. he died a few months ago and now all I got is memories of.him. rip dad

Never mind the new wave girls, let's just focus on that Ricky bass. The bass playing on this is next level, the grace notes, the deep funky, all of it. And all power to Rick for making it a visual centrepiece of the video.
