My wife asked if I could make her a serving platter so that's what I did. I added texture to make it a little more interesting. It took about three hours to add the texture but I enjoyed the process and thought it was worth it!
Scrap wood does not mean bad, they're just off cuts from a local business. It's a great idea to reuse that perfectly fine wood, they're just smaller pieces.
I love the extra touches of finesse you add to your projects. The hand carving takes it from functional to a work of art, and absolutely unlike anything one would find in a shop.
my friend, you are the most patient man I know. adding the texture like that- it would have drove me crazy... well done! it adds a lot to the platter. I really like the result. great job!
Thanks! That's what I'm enjoying about the Scrapwood Challenge, it allows me to make things like this! Without the challenge there's no way I would've made this video! :)
Your channel is very inspiring! All the wood I have to work with atm are old 2x4's of pine and fir, and I am building my woodshop piece by piece. These scrapwood challenges are so great! Please keep them coming!
@@PaskMakes I'm working on a Chess set atm! Opposing grains seem to make a great difference between "black" or "white" peices when you have a lack of stain/variety of material.
You have great patience Neil. I might try it one day. You make the power carving look easy but it takes a bit of practice to get it nice and even like you did. Thanks for another great project video.
Hole E. Molee, that is amazing work and craftsmanship, and I'm going to start one tomorrow! If I did my math correctly with your texture carving...roughly this by that, my calculations are that you had to make 1.4 million scrapes of wood to cover the surface. I'm officially a fan. Thanks.
I'm not used to commenting on this kind of videos, and even if I like the scrapwood challenge videos, it's the first time I feel the need to comment. This was a really nice project. The texturing seems tedious but worth the time spent. The over all look is great. Well done.
Once again, making things look so easy. Wouldn't it suck if after you had finished giving the tray texture, you were like, " I think I liked it better when it was flat."...lol. As always, awesome video, really enjoy watching them, thanks.
Very nicely done Pask! Really like how you did a lot of hands on work with this project. That texturing bit came out terrific but also made me realize that I won't be doing that any time real soon.........LOL......... :)
Now, I like a good serving platter as much as the next guy but they are always front-heavy wrist breakers. Here’s a challenge Neil: make a scalloped platter with better balance towards the handle! 😁
Love the scrap wood challenges ... keep it up if you can!!!! Quick question... what do you get more use/benefit out of... a bandsaw or a thicknesser (planner)??? I don't have either and I'm looking for some advice... Please feel free (anyone) to chime in
Great video...again! Sandblasting with a medium Aggregate can give a very similar texture in a lot, lot less time. Ah, but for the love of hand finishing. Sandblast challenge, sandblast challenge.
Awesome work! You do better work in an afternoon than have done (yet!). I'm going to have to try this out soon as I have some scraps sitting around collecting dust!
The workings... definitely! When I watch you work on fine details on your projects it makes me think you'd do well with wooden gears. I really like that you work so patiently, and mindfully, on the smaller details. Love that kind of thing myself. Cheers Neil, you inspire me.

@@hughartcraft2255 He wrote it took him 3 hours and you're asking how long did it take?
That was phenomenal. I like the texture but i almost went insane just watching the short clips of you hand carving it. Very nice work though.
You have an incredible pacience. And most incredibly the pattern appears to be very consistent throughout the platter... Hats off to you!
That wasn't three hours of making a texture. That was three hours of meditation 😉
What type of wood is the scraps that you are making all this from? Aussie ash or something??
I think you have done a lot more with "scrap wood" than others can do with "good wood". Another hit out of the park.
Just giving it a go Jeff! Thanks! :)
It is good wood! Didn't you listen to the jingle? "Some of the wood is good"

Glad you like it Dave! :)
I can't believe you carved out that whole bottom by hand. Nice work! Loving the SWC!
I really enjoy carving texture! Thanks! :)
What a labor of love. That texturing really made the difference.

Huge respect for the patients shown in the carving. Really enjoying this series.
Serving platters are not normally my favorite videos, but this one was gorgeous. Great job. I love the scrap wood challenge!

Stardancer99 Also, 2x4s are a lot less nerve-wracking when giving a project a go the first time round. A mistake costs a lot less! 😂👍
This is why you're a cut above. About 4000 cuts. That texture is incredible and you do amazing work.
BRB, adding "texturing a serving platter" to the list of things I'm never going to do
You have great patience Neil. I might try it one day. You make the power carving look easy but it takes a bit of practice to get it nice and even like you did.
Thanks for another great project video.
Thanks Dave! For power carving a flat bottom then this is easily the best disc to do the job. And isn't too difficult to get a fairly flat surface! :)
The texture, which looks like it took forever, turned out super nice! And the display at the end for just perfect! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks mate! :)
Fantastic project, looked even better enhanced by the mineral oil coating. You're so lucky having a great supply of wood with fabulous grain pattern
Another great video. The patience you have with that gouge, impressive.
Thanks Rick! I actually really enjoy it! :)
Easily a highlight of my week is watching your videos! Thank you for all the work to build the projects and then edit the videos! Appreciate you Neil!
Thank you Henry! :)
A man with more patience than a tectonic plate, to do all that hand texturing so consistently.
Outstanding! You are an inspiration for all of your viewers. Thank you.
That was the best, complete videos I have seen. Great job! Your wife is blessed!
The texturing on the interior is brilliant!

I admire you for not taking the easy way out on the corners. And th adding the texture part, huuuge hat from the head! Keep up the amazing work!
Thanks very much! :)
Wow! It’s really, really nice, and we love the ending!
now this is wath i call CRAFMANSHIP absolutely BEAUTIFULL. well done.
Fantastic! The texture made the whole thing come together nicely. You are a very patient man. Congrats on another excellent Scrapwood Challenge.
Thanks very much Alexandre! :)

Amazing, normally scrap wood is placed into the weather. You have it covered :) . I cant get bored of the opening theme (Emoji Thumbs Up)
Thanks! We had the first rain in months last week so I thought it best to cover some of it up! :)
I really enjoy your creativity
Beautiful job, i love the grain and color after you oil that wood.
Lovely as always. That texturing really made this piece.
Thanks Dylan - glad you liked it! :)
Great functional piece! Love the texture and glad you went that way. All the best, see you next time.
Thanks mate - glad you liked it Scott! :)
Very cool! That's one of my favorite textures for wood, reminds me of old iron work, with the ball peen hammered look
You have so much patience. Thanks for sharing !
Nice work, Neil. You are a very patient man to hand carve the bottom.
My favorite so far. Really beautiful piece.
Wow. Lovely use of scrapwood. I'm making a solar dehydrator from scrap plywood and wood... fun and useful project!
Great serving platter! Thanks for continuing with your Scrape wood Challenges!
That texturing looks great. I hope you had a good audiobook to listen to while you did it!
Thanks Karl! Listening to War of the Roses at the moment - it's very good! :)
What a load of old Crasp . lol ....... Turned into a beautiful Platter
Brilliant, loved it. Adding the texture created something more than the serving board it is. Well done. Regards Paul
Respect for the applied texture time. Great !!
Nice design and very well made. Excellent video! Thanks for sharing. Best wishes
love the textured finish!

Just beautiful! The carved pattern turned out great 👍
Nice looking tray think I’ll make one thanks for the idea.
I admire your patience sir carving that texture!!! Great works and videos you have on you channel!!! Cheers!!
That scrap wood is some fine wood you have there. The result is beautiful… Gives me the feeling of trying to make it my self.
Holy carpal tunnel syndrome with the texturing. Just another couple thousand to go, and you're almost a quarter of the way there.
Very clever. Well done.
That's awesome it's almost reversible serving tray on one side cutting board on the back!
The texture was worth the effort. It looks amazing.
This is the best episode so far in the waist wood challenge. Great video thanks for sharing 👍🇬🇧

Great my friend, i cant believe that carving!
Thanks! Glad you liked it! :)
Your scrap wood is better than any regular wood i can obtain here
That's a really beautiful platter, Neil! I find your patience with repetitive tasks inspiring. Have you ever thought about making wooden clocks?
Glad you like it mate! Never thought about clocks, do you mean just the face and buy the workings or the workings also?

Beautiful piece. All that texture shows the amount of heart you put into it. : ) Great video.
