I'm not a locksmith, or any kind of expert on this, But I would guess it HAS to be that the first and third levers would be the same, as the key needs to work the bolt from either side of the door. (unlike a lever lock on a desk or cabinet.)
Probably my most satisfying job as a locksmith. Reconditioning old mortise style locks. Unfortunately these types of jobs are getting fewer and far between.
I understand how you marked the ward cuts, but I can't quite figure out how you were able to deduce where and how deep to make the lever cuts, just by marking the bit of the key with the Sharpie.
What are the top reasons why these old deadbolts suddenly fail - meaning, someone has the correct key and it works day in and day out without issues, but then one day, suddenly the door can’t be locked or unlocked?
Love this! Exactly what I was looking for… Question though. I’m trying to cut a key for a very similar 3 lever lock (Sargent 5234 Easy Spring), and the problem I keep running into is that the levers keep shifting out of alignment, even when the casing is completely closed. Are the levers too thin for the lock? Everything is all original so I don’t know what the problem could be. Thanks!
Absolutely professional. While watching your lever lock key making series videos, I was wondering: have you ever encountered broken key in lever locks (cause as you mentioned in one video, some lever lock keys are made of rather soft/fragile(?) material)? If yes, is there specific methods to get the broken bit out?
not actually, they were much easier to pick, and the tolerance of the parts is absolutely massive compaired to modern locks. Like a part could be a millimeter and a half larger or smaller then the design specification and they'd still work. They were very easy to pick a=or break. A quality lock today will beat any earley 1900's lock, hands down, the problem is cheap locks from big box stores. (cheap is a word that speaks on quality not price) Masterlock padlocks and Kwikset door locks really need to step up their game the lock sport community has proven that point beyond beating a dead horse. That being said, even those chepos will hold under a beating that would break an old mortise lock, and have similar pick resistance times, which is under 1 min so, that's sad for the modern locks, but they still beat the older locks in that they break to fail safe allowing them to take more abuse before catastrophic release ( breaking so bad they allow the Intruder in)
Yeah! We love these projects that come in. Ah ha see. We know you film them all, but never release the videos. Don't worry so much about it. Just upload, and release it... no worries. Just keep 'em coming. We'll watch and like them, darn it. -Stay Awesome! 👍 P.S. Sorry I missed S2E1, had a crazy call yesterday! 😵

Thanks for this. I saw you put the levers in the reverse order of removal, but realized that the first and third were the same:)

@@jamesslick4790 isn’t the cut in the center of the key the lever closest to the bolt?
@@jandrbryan I'm not sure, I guess it depends on the lock. (I'm not an expert, LOL)
I can imagine a prisoner filing something down for years and finally hearing the lock turn.

Hello, I have this exact lock. Was wondering if you can tell me the spring that it used, size/length. Mine has snapped.
I think my favorite picture at the end was with the key engagement with the levers.

Broken spring typically
Very cool, thanks for digging this out and video-ifying it 😊 I've probably got like 6 of these locks in my house, lol
I remember having these in the house growing up in, but that house was demolished about 10 years ago.
Chirael it was actually a customers mailed in for keys :)

What type of key cutter were you using? I’m really needing something like that to cut old keys.
Good stuff.
FYI, Reading is pronounced 'Redding'.
I prefer a candle. or cheapo "crack" lighter(cause you can turn it up easy) when mobile. Nailed it though. Nice work.
Nice job Jason.
A Three Dog Night thanks :)
Good Job, nice Lock
Those locks were built better than the ones now

I love your videos but as for me,I cut each individual lever one at a time begining with the first one then replicate on the other side lol, keep it up
A Lock for old Boats, best of them had 6 Levers and was really secure

Thx for the Video. Just got back from a flea market, but the only lock was an old CPR switch lever padlock with no key.
I'm_Gumby did you end up getting the padlock? I keep wanting to go to auctions where they have padlocks but they are always out in the boondocks! :)
@@selock No, $85 was a bit steep without a key. I can let you know if your looking for one.
