I want to point out, and I didn’t mention it in the video, but this was the “son” of a locksmith who’s father had rekeyed similar locks in the past for this customer.
If that’s the case, the son likely did have some type of equipment (for key cutting) or at least one would assume that. Who knows 🤷‍♂️
Yes you can easily clip out a key with a inexpensive Lishi clipper. Maybe it wouldn’t have been “on spec” but it really wouldn’t need to be, you can clip out a key and use any key pins that worked.

I've talked to locksmiths that act like it is a cross between rocket science and some ancient mystical art. They are pissed that so much information is readily available on the Internet. They don't think mere human beings should have access to knowledge.

one off locks that don't need to be part of a system can be set to whatever pin specs a person can dream. May not be "right" but it can be done. As long as the key brings the pins to the shear line, the lock don't care.

@@georgeblair7129 True. That 2nd plug looked like the top was ground off to add some slop to the sheer line. Jason's reaction had me wondering if the 1st guy accidently dumped the top pins. (no spring or pins)

I embarrassingly almost had to tell a customer the same thing last week. RU46 mortise locks. I just happened to have extra blanks from one previous customer, but I don't have a code cutting machine or space and depth keys for the RU46. So I put their current key in my duplicator, cut the first two cuts more shallow, and the last 3 cuts deeper, and then trial and error'd the pins till I had a working lock.

I'm going to agree with everyone who said he likely either didn't have anything other than Kwikset and Schlage pinning kits and/or he didn't have an easy way to make the keys and just carries Schlage/Kwikset precuts with him and doesn't know how useful a file can be for a locksmith. I don't have any old old Russwin keyway cylinders in stock, but I would have at least offered a nice D1 or SC4 replacement if the cylinders were too far gone to rekey.

    Thanks for doing this video.

Unless they are auto, but they do Honda's.

I can't wait until the end of this month. I'm going to get me a Borkey, a Mini-Mite, a Framon 2, and a Dang-It Wes-tinghouse. And they all look new and in prestine condition. It seems like today anyone with a screwdriver can call themselves a locksmith. If I don't know something or how to do something I'll inform the customer and refer them to someone else.

I had a similar issue and was told a lock could not be rekeyed one time. I assumed the guy was an idiot and went elsewhere to get it done. It was a simpler job then that one because it was a common keyway.

Be interesting to hear the back story but honestly, these mortise cylinders are so cheap, I usually have them brand new in pairs already keyed alike and they’re almost the same price as rekeying the old ones. If they had a set key they wanted them to match (like maybe the pinning was worn or they had so many worn duplicate keys being used I’d reuse/ rekey the old ones to match but if they’re starting over I’d probably go new and it’d be about the same price. Russwin isn’t a common keyway in my area but I do have blanks jic. Thanks for sharing!

    • @selock

I can only assume, for the guy to find one of our old Russwin videos and contact us and pay for shipping back and forth he wanted to maintain his original stuff. He did mention he had "other old Russwin's" so to him, it was worth it I reckon :)

Pretty bad that someone that's suppose to be a Locksmith couldn't rekey a cylinder and cut a key. Maybe they didn't know about shimming the plug from the rear or had another job that was going to pay more. Could have lazy and didn't want to deal with gummed up cylinders. If I can re-key those and code cut new keys with a rudimentary Foley Belsaw Model 200 (with tolerances of +/-0.01") then something is wrong with the so called "Locksmith" (they might not of had a key machine with them which would be stupid). About the only requests I've had that I cannot do is Biaxal keys, New Automotive keys, and programming fobs. Now if I dont need a key programmer I can sometimes manually program a fob. I don't have the money to spend on the equipment needed to do those tasks. I've been a Locksmith Apprentice for about 18 months. My mentor has taught me just about everything he knows and I've taught him about some things he's forgotten.

I'm wondering if the son of the original Locksmith was able to remove the mortise locks from what was probably an old entry handle lock set. ( not sure what those are called actually) anyway... It doesn't look like any attempt was made to open the cams etc. That or Russwin looked foreign to him and no code machine to boot.

  • @Ghost_Os

Maybe he didn't have a key machine or depth / space info/card or depth & space keys? Maybe didn't have another blank to reference off of, depending on his machine? Obviously, there are ways of getting around all of that. Who knows. Good job, Jason 🍷

@@selock Yeah, you wonder sometimes. I mean, I read somewhere else where you mentioned it was the son of the locksmith who had done it before, so presumably if he's calling himself a locksmith he has tools like you said. But really, even if you have nothing... Zero locksmith tools, zero reference material... Take the lock apart, stick the blank in the cylinder, make sure it's seated fully, stick a nail or a 1/8 inch (I think) drill bit in each pin hole, whatever you have to mark center. Then file, being mindful of your angles and to allow enough width for the root cut. Reuse the pins, just swap the position of 2 or 3. And like you said, doesn't even need to be on spec, so you could even file the pins shorter if you wanted to. If there's no working key, pick it. If you can't pick it, shim it. Don't have shims, go raid your DVD collection or buy a cheap one for one of those anti-theft thingies, and take it apart for the metal strips. They're not pre-curved, so a little fidgety, but they work. Use a drill bit or a rolled up business card for your plug follower. It's about as down and dirty as it gets, and the end result might not be pretty, but it'll work.
Thank you for reading my rant 😆. As you said, if you can't do it, don't say that you can. But, everybody's new once, so the point is, there's nothing wrong with not knowing, just learn... From fine, instructive videos like this one 😉👍
      Enjoy your Monday, Jason! 🍷
