I have lived in SF for many decades, in the last five years, property crime has increased. I get my Vespa rear view mirrors stolen so often, I don't replace them and this is a safety risk when i ride my Vespa. Also, i used to be able to keep my bike rack on my truck but multiple thefts, makes it so I have to put on my bike rack each time I want to transport my bike. This is all very annoying, but at least I don't have a long commute to work, so I stay here. But property crime makes SF more difficult to live in, period. And I live in an upscale neighborhood.

My funniest memory of San Francisco was back in 1986. I was 5 years old and my family (from near San Diego) and relatives (from Redding) all decided to meet up there that summer. Just a few days before, I had my very first taste of nachos and loved them. So while in San Francisco, we decided to have dinner at a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. Being 5 years old, not realizing, I asked the waiter for some nachos 😆

I was born and raised in San Francisco. I had a friend whose family owned a restaurant in Chinatown. I met him in junior high. We hadn't been friends long when he invited me to his birthday dinner at the restaurant. It was big with a bunch of relatives. They were all of Chinese ancestery and treated me like family. After dinner they all got quiet when they brought me out my fortune cookie. I opened it and it read "That wasn't chicken." A giant laugh went up when they all saw the look on my face. They went to the fortune cookie factory and had that cookie specially made up to give to me. That's the San Francisco I remember.

I now live in Las Vegas, left San Diego in 1996, but before that, we used to make a trip to SF every few years. Now when I hear Tony Bennetts "I left my heart in SF" I get a lump in my throat.

I went there several times in the 80's when I was in the navy. We would tie up at the wharf and be very close to all the tourist activity. In fact, we would be part of it. Our ship would give tours to tourist while we were there. The city was beautiful, bustling with people from all over the world and at night it was a sailors dream. There was the under belly if you will, but there was a great night life for everyone else and if you didn't mind spending all your money, you could have a blast!

This reminds me of when I used to live in Oakland. I miss it so much, I used to go to SF all the time 💔 my two cents on the safety of the Bay area? I moved out there completely by myself at 18. I lived on a college campus for a little over a year, then I moved into an apartment with an engaged couple who worked across the bridge and were never home and needed someone to watch their dog (we had opposite schedules). I was completely safe when I lived in Oakland, way safer than before I moved. I came from rural Ohio and NC, where the crime rate was supposedly low but unspeakable horrors happened to me constantly. In Oakland, I finally received help and safety. (And before anyone tries to claim that I had a different/privileged experience or thinks I was living off rich family, I lived below the poverty line for the first 18 years of my life and funded my move by getting a full ride scholarship by staying at the top of my class despite what I was surviving)

I live in rural America. It is not safe. There are people in them woods that are not in their right mind and will shoot you if they see you. In their minds you are a claim jumper or the Revenue agent come too take their moonshine or pot. It is safer in a city around decent folks but the dive bars in small towns also are not safe because of the town Bullies hang out there and like too sucker punch unsuspecting men and think they are tuff because they blasted a guy with a sucker punch from behind and then beat the crap out of them makes them fell tuff. Of course nobody saw nothing. Even though there was ten people there when it happened. They all cousins and business partners.

When I lived there the cable car was only 25 cents and you could get a transfer to ride the other means of transportation. About 5 years ago I looked on the internet and the cable car was 5 dollars to ride. I loved San Francisco. There so many things to do. As a matter of fact I met Carlos Santana at hippie hill in Golden Gate Park. Eventually I moved to Oregon and have been here every sense. BART was under construction the hole time that I lived there. I drove down the Pacific Coast highway, once and had no intention of stopping in San Francisco, but when I took in the view of the Golden Gate Bridge, it was just too irresistible to pass up. I booked a bunk at a hostel and found a parking garage about 5 miles away where you could park for $20 a day, and then walked everywhere - dinner in China town - not.a bad cup of coffee anywhere to be found (other than Starbucks). Hands down, the most beautiful city in these whole United States - there's no close 2nd. I could never afford to live there, but would if I could. Maybe when enough tech bros leave for their low-tax capitalist Utopia of Texas, the rents will come back down again for normal people.

Every major city has "bad" sections that are not representative of the whole. Even my small town population 9000 has some of those and we are in the Midwest. For a city as old as San Francisco you would be a fool to think it did not have low income areas. Wanna bet that Miami is the same? Right wing Red states often have the highest crime rates on a statewide basis, but they all want to say that Cali is worse when that is not true most of the time. Maybe it is because the politicians spread those rumors so you don't realize how bad your area is!!! Easier to point to others than to actually fix your town.

    Dear Wonderhussy,
Hi, well just had to comment .... as is apparent, many don't know what is happening.....we are in a monopoly game worldwide in which continuously the rich get richer and the rest go bankrupt in a constant inflation and which inequality goes to the extreme ( billionaires and billions in poverty) until a final collapse occurs , ( according to MIT , 2040 give or take) . So...... the masses are spending a lot , as in A LOT less on non essentials, so I have witnessed over the years , a massive drop in tips and a massive increase in expenses for everything like housing, gas, food, etc . Leading to the situations we are seeing, on the wharf with big expensive restaurants closing and Starbucks doing great. Like climate change and war , urban blight and homelessness is increasing , and like the proverbial frog slowly heating to boiling, ( oh this Hot Tub is now a Stew Pot and I didn't get a notice ) we don't notice a big enough change to get the fuck out ( like you and me near Death Valley did get out) , of the cities which will suffer the worse as they are the financial monopoly board squares, and have huge populations of poor people, in the great depression and ww II the best went through living on farms, where food is always needed no matter who wins. ( today need to go greenhouses with controlled parameters)
So...... go solar, get and Aptera electric car, get a ecohome and be prepared for regular life to cease slowly..... but surely..... the climate, war, and economy are all going to get a lot worse , until we get a new civilization paradigm ( Electronic Exchange, Universal Income, etc ) and leave the industrial civ. behind.
Short background; I was accepted as San Francisco Art Institute in 1978, moved on to Yosemite for three and half years, and college at Columbia in the Sierra then HSU up north, point is went into Hospitality; Yosemite restaurants, New England Inn North Conway New Hampshire , Napili Kai Beach Resort on Maui, Idaho Flynns, ID, Knickerbocker Mansion, Big Bear Lake, Ca , L'Auberge Sedona , AZ etc...... so I have seen a lot of the restaurant / lodging industry. ON point: the economy IS , according to Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Study called "Limits to Growth" in which computer simulation models of real world goods and services / raw materials / pollution etc parameters PROVED that the real world IS a monopoly game model : IE : competition for money in a capitalist ( fractional reserve monetary system of fiat currency utilizing a private Federal Reserve / Swift / Central Bank establishment)monetary system . Thx for reading my " thought you might find this interesting" comments. LOL Theodore ( The Alien of the Outpost )

Hey there, Wonderhussy! I was born in the Washoe County Medical Center and got my bachelors degree from SF State in the 90s. I even sang at the SF Opera once upon a time. My wife and I were just back in SF a week or so ago and it doesn’t seem like much has changed. I lived in the Mission Dist. It was kind of scary then, it’s kind of scary now. We had drinks at Zombie Village in the Tenderloin Dist. It was scary then, it’s scary now. We did park our car at our hotel in Union Square so we wouldn’t get robbed and it was fine. All those Waymo Jaguars are in L.A. too and park right outside people’s condos with loud reverse beeps and super-red brake lights on (ask me how I know!). Anyway, long-time watcher, first-time commentator. Keep up the good work!

Bet you won't make it 1 block in the mission or tenderloin district without having your cam or phone snatched....you do know that city has a free poop app..
Showing a map of piles of human poop all over the city...does any other city have a human poop app?????

I’m a local. Your assessment of SF is correct. It’s something in the middle. It hasn’t recovered from the pandemic but it hasn’t lost its charm.

You have the best video tour of SFO. Very entertaining!
