My local Dollar Tree has really bumped up their craft section since Tuesday Morning closed. Of course, they don't carry paper, but I have enough paper to last a lifetime! The sticker, metal dies, ink, paint, glitter, ribbon, and glue sections are well stocked. Enjoy crafting everyone!

Recently visited my local Hobby Lobby. What I find is they are turning the store into a Home Decor store. They were redoing the store and had moved the paper crafting to a new much smaller area. Very disappointed in the reduction of products that are available. Overall, the crafting supplies for all departments have decreased tremedously and home decor is replacing it. So much for the "hobby" in Hobby Lobby!

You are spot on. My Hobby Lobby is totally resetting and I was told today they are reducing their craft departments and putting their emphasis on seasonal because it is more profitable for them. Over Christmas they had a mind blowing amount of product, to the point where you couldn’t walk down some aisles, and after Christmas they sold the majority of it at 90% off. I fail to see the reasoning there. They have totally done away with dies and my favorites, the Tim Holtz products, are almost nonexistent. First the coupons disappeared and now, the items that used to go on sale every other week, are either never on sale, or at less discount than before. For instance Paper Studio used to be 50% off every other week. Now it’s 40% and doesn’t necessarily go on sale every 2 weeks. Our Michael’s is very expensive compared to HL and although they are currently doing slightly better, they have tons of empty shelves and as with HL, carrying fewer and fewer craft supplies and the ones they are featuring are their own brands or kids’ kits. They no longer carry dies and have almost no rubber stamps. I don’t shop JoAnne’s since it is way far away from me but have not been impressed the few times I’ve made the trek. This is very depressing. As you say, we are going to be forced to buy more and more on line. I love shopping in person for my supplies but it looks like that is a thing of the past.

I also have found that ALL the craft stores/shops are cutting back on inventory! I've been told multiple times by employees that they can't get the items they need due to supply chain issues....... not enough employees available to produce the products and a lack of employees to manage things in the stores themselves. Also I've been told that consumers have cut back on spending drastically due to the cost of food, utilities and other necessities.

Jo Ann was smart. They stayed in Savannah and never entered the Bluffton/Hilton Head Island corridor. It's still an event sort of thing with a extra trip into the city to go see what they have but they can stay stocked because of sheer population demographics. Michael's expanded to way more small population centers and Bluffton had it's boom where they were the best place to shop. But right now I think the framing kiosk is the big draw. People in the area now have the deep pockets to use that aspect of the store.

Well, I think when Covid hit, people just started ordering online and found that they liked it. So if crafters are ordering online, all of the stores are going to stop caring craft items. Covid has changed our world more than we realized because it has encouraged people to buy online. Our stores also stopped the coupons that we loved because they are hurting from people not shopping. Since I don't buy online, and our stores have cut down on my supplies, I may have to just "shop" out of my own room. 🙂

Sadly My Hobby Lobby paper crafting section was pretty bare. I have been waiting for new dies and paper pads but there were literally no more dies? I don’t do cricket but that isle is stocked. The isles did get moved around in a unorganized manner. I thought maybe it was going out of business it was so lacking! So sad!

I only look at the home decor for inspiration. I saw a printed "painting" for $40 that I liked. Went home grabbed a canvas I got as a gift during a holiday from my kids and some of my oil paints and bam 2 minutes later it was done. Granted it was just a black on white swiped brush store design but I got a more archival, unique, actual painting for basically free.

I think a lot of us crafters are now turning to online craft supplies shopping, because we feel we can't count of the regular craft supplies stores we use to shop for our craft supplies. Also Hobby Lobby for months now has not put on special Sewology Buttons, Fairy tale, and Timeline jewelry, I purchased these items regular because of the 40% off every 2 weeks, I spoke with an employee and she told me they were no longer going to put these items on special anymore....Why?... so I don't shop Hobby lobby that much anymore.

I would love to shop locally for crafts supplies. Michaels, Joann, and Hobby Lobby are all within half hour of my house. But they all have limited offerings of Tim Holtz, Dylusions, and other paper crafts basics. Some designers and products they don't carry at all any more. Sadly the best papercraft store near me is about a 3 hour drive, so it's not someplace I can just pop in to see the latest items. I mostly order online (and grouse about shipping every time!).

Thanks for this video. Informative. I have noticed the same thing, very hard to find any selection anymore in Papercrafts pretty much anywhere now in the craft stores. We have to purchase more and more online, and no sale prices, in addition to the fact that you cannot see the products in person. When I started Papercrafting, back in the 90’s, the box stores had all the brands, such as Echo Park, My Minds Eye, etc……and the ephemera and other add ons. Not so now. I guess if things do not sell well, they aren’t going to restock. Plus, a whole generation of younger people who do not work with their hands, so, less demand for craft supplies is my guess. I’ve noticed the same thing here in the northeast. Joanns, Michaels, Hobby Lobby carrying more and more home dec products. Papercraft aisles shrinking, every year or non existent. Michaels is very limited on Papercrafting products, and geared to children’s crafts now. I am also so glad I have a big stash from which to draw upon for my crafting, so I just go “shopping” in my studio! Where there’s a will, there’s a way! And I do purchase online for those items I can get there at a reasonable price. Thanks again for the tour of the stores in your area! Happy crafting!

I have to travel 90 minutes north for small JoAnn's and Michael's stores (neither of which carry much papercrafting supplies), or at least 60 minutes southwest for a good Hobby Lobby. I live in the UK and we only have 1 dedicated art & craft store. It doesn’t sell any of my main art supplies. They’ve had the same Tim Holtz for years, even when they get in new colours it’s not all the colours. I once asked the store manager why things aren’t changed up regularly and she said that the buyers buy in bulk and don’t revisit until most of the stock is gone. Such a catch 22 because by the time they get something ‘new’ in store we’ve all bought the whole collection online and don’t want to buy it there now. Our stores are mostly kid crafts, cutting machines and student grade art materials, plus seasonal decor. I only ever go in for canvases and sketch books when they are on sale. Otherwise they don’t sell anything I actually use!

I feel like the "Big 3" stores are turning away from crafting because of DIY crafters who go to the Dollar Tree and turn something into nothing, and the marketing departments of these stores saying that they are missing out. What that does is alienate the people who use the crafting supplies the most, and it also raises the prices on some of these supplies and tools.
These "big 3" stores need to find a happy medium to please both the crafters and the DIYers.

I’m always looking for Tim Holtz products when I go into a Michael’s or Joann store. I noticed long ago that Michael’s did not have a lot of Tim Holtz anymore. Joann’s does. I know Tim Holtz does his clear stamp/stencil combos for them and my Joann store near me usually has a good selection. One Halloween I went in and they had a lot of the Halloween idea-ology and I don’t think even the online stores had it or it was pre-order. I finally have a new Hobby Lobby near me, visited it once but was disappointed. I don’t drive so I do a lot of online shopping. You're not the only one noticing. The warning sign for a retail store is when they start shifting from their core demographic to toys and generic merchandise like home goods, which is definitely the case for Michaels and Joann. There used to be a full aisle of planner supplies at my Michaels and now there is a center aisle display, and literally no stamping products. None. I haven't seen any new stickers in Michaels or Joann in a looooong time. Joann's seems to always be in the middle of a re-stock (ie, empty). Hobby Lobby is a little harder to gauge, but I noticed they're getting rid of name brand art supplies in favor of their Master's Touch house brand, which is student grade at best, and cheap pre-made arts&crafts kits. Plastic plastic plastic.

I'm lucky, my Joann's was just redone and is BEAUTIFUL! you can use a glow forge there, hold your own classes in their open classroom space. It's just gorgeous 😍

The Joann’s by me did that also, they rebuilt and it’s got all that fancy stuff but it doesn’t have hardly any paper crafts a good half of the store is fabric.

A change fueled by online shopping. We all want the huge selection of paper crafts on line.

I don't have a hobby lobby near me. My Michael's and Joann's have cut WAY WAY down on Papercrafting. Cricut has replaced a lot of the Papercrafting areas.

Michaels Craft Store is my preferred craft store out of the 3 craft stores. Unfortunately closest one is about an hour from me and don’t go often. But when I do, I stock up on my favorite cardstock

Yes, I agree, stocking up on the basics works well at Michaels!

It seems to me my craft stores are reducing papercrafting stuff for like cards, memory books, journals. They are getting more of the really expensive electronic machines which are not cost effective for me cause I only papercraft occasionally and don't have the room for those items.

    • @ScrappyWife
      @ScrappyWife  ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, definitely leaning toward the cutting machines more for sure.

There is one that I know of in my state but it’s 30 minutes from me and it’s more fabric than crafting too.

Thanks for the shopping trip and I am noticing the same in the stores here in So. Central PA. IMO if people were still buying all the things, they would be selling all the things. The Tim Holtz sections are getting smaller and smaller. I guess they figure, why pay TH when we could have our own similar line. I went to Joanns awhile back to look at washi tape and the said that they "no longer carry it" Hunh?!? Everything is so expensive now maybe no one has money for the "extras". My budget is a lot tighter. TFS.

My Hobby Lobby got rid of two aisles in the papercrafting section! They reduced the planner aisle and the stamping section. So sad 😢 Now I get everything online.

Has anyone mentioned Shein, similar to Temu? My sister gets her scrubs and leggings there, so I clicked on an ad the other day to find that current crafty brand name dies cost pennies on the dollar! So much crafting items I couldn’t believe it. I clicked on dies that I have in my stash, and I was shocked to see the bargain prices. Any thoughts/experiences? I ONLY shop online at craft retailers and Amazon, which carries TimH, Pinkfresh, Spellbinders, etc.

I only have a Hobby Lobby in my town. I've been frustrated that they've transitioned from outside brands to in-house brands. No more Strathmore or Canson paper, for example. It's all Master's Touch now, which is poorer quality, IMO. The art supplies are going that direction, too. Then there's the paring down of the paper crafting section. Frustrating, as it's the only place in town if something is needed immediately.
I have to drive an hour for Joann's or Michael's. My Joann's is nice snd has a great Hero Arts and Tim Holtz selection. Michael's is my go-to store for art supplies, like paper and pens/pencils/markers. But honestly, as a card maker, online comprises the majority of my shopping. There's no way that big box stores could possibly keep up with all the great companies out there. I don't like paying for shipping, but I love having the ability to shop all the brands.

Yes I miss the variety of the brands of paper and paint. I don’t care for Masters Touch, either.
