    Great video and I value the insight. I own Genos 1 and cannot understate the usefulness of this great instrument as a live performance keyboard. It's the keyboard I wish was available years ago when I made a living at gigging with features like on-board backing tracks organised in playlists with sheet music and lyrics, built in microphone input (phantom powered), effects built in, styles for impromptu playing and quality piano voices. Personally, I'm struggling to justify upgrading to this latest version, and I really want to find the motivation for this based on my experience of owning the previous edition. For a 1 owner, the 2 version appears extremely similar with few ground breaking 'reason to upgrade' features. However, if you don't already own an arranger then this is one i'd highly recommend. I'm sure the 2's sound quality is improved (drums being the most obvious) and there are new and improved styles. Owning a 1 already I'm not sure I can justify spending the next couple of years 'dripping up' 4K to keep up-to-date. If anything, I feel maybe the Korg Pa5X is worth a look at in addition to my Genos 1, and for anyone considering an arranger keyboard do look at the Korg (it sounds fantastic). I realise arrangers are traditionally thought to be aimed at the home hobbyist market, but as a former pro-entertainer, do not underestimate the usefulness of this type of machine. They come with seriously useful features enabling (particularly solo) gigging musicians to setup quickly and get performing easily. I still do the odd gig now and then and really value the 'one man band' performances that the Yamaha arranger keyboards facilitate.

    0:35 With the Tyros series they started to use separate speakers. So they respond to the reaction about the heavy PSR 9000 and could reduce the weight.
    Genos is pretty small, has the size, a 76 key version of a PSR keyboard would have.

    For the first time somebody explain in a different way the functions of the arranger. Thank you very much for taking the time to explain it so well. Now you said it is not easy to play the instrument and to know the different buttons and slider's function and I agree 100 % with you. I'm a classically trained pianist and I wish they could have an 88 version of these arrangers, specially at that price tag. I went to the store and its very challenging if not impossible for me to play chords on the left and melody on the right hand because we use the whole 88 notes of the keyboard to express ourselves and play 😊 (you understand where I am coming from), but did I heard you saying we can still play the whole keyboard and have the whole band backing up?
    Also as a songwriter these styles and variations provide a creativity infusion which is the part I appreciate on the this such small piece of art called the Genos 2 and the quality of the sounds it is just breathtaking. Thanks once again for your dedicated time and effort to teach me how to play Yamaha Genos 2.

Shows you how long ago its been since i have played around with keyboards in a shop, but then again the company who had the shops went under sadly, some time ago, and there are no keyboard dealers about now in my town sadly.

    Another brilliant tutorial, Woody. I'm not so surprised by the
    chord detection. Yamaha have been doing this since the 1980s Electones and
    mathematically it seems quite straightforward. I should check how my EL-90
    (c 1990) does, but I'm not in the same location as it right now. Thanks for
    showing us the buttons and their purposes, which I've not seen on other

    I own a number of sequencer keyboards and groove boxes. which allow you to customise your backing but recently bought a vintage 1998 Yamaha DJX which is an arranger keyboard but so much fun as you can make the patterns your own with the cutoff, filter and DSP. And add your own samples to the cool arpeggiator. The Genus is an updated version of the DJX.

    Thanks Woody! As usual, you knocked it out of the park in helping one to decide if the $5600+ price tag of the Genos 2 is worth the money. And as an owner of the PSR S975, I can honestly say it is not. Yeah, it has more styles and options, but the effects produced really boil down to the talent and imagination of the musician. That being said, I've heard no demos on the Genos 1 or 2 that top the richness of sounds and techniques I can produce on my S975. Further, the array of options for music genres and international themes are endless, and I've yet to come across a song I couldn't compose a beat for, or that already had a complementary style.
    Again, a great overview of the keyboard on your part. But at best, it should cost under $3K IMO.

      @@WoodyPianoShack You're welcome, Woody. Thanks for the fast response. Your comprehensive vids on the PSR970 were largely what led me to take a chance on the PSR 975! It was so new at the time, that l could find no local dealers to test it out, but made the $2K+ gamble based on my past successes with simpler Yamaha arrangers. It continues to amaze me and deliver awesome sounding results! I have enough options in that unit to produce more quality tunes than a lifetime will allow.

    It’s relatively easy to escape the cheese. Thin down the styles, change the instruments in the parts a little and above all switch to ‘figured on bass’ fingering. That way, you get to choose both the chord and the bass note of each. Don’t forget, you can play individual notes (up to two) in the left hand to add your own lines down below the split without changing the harmony. I generally own use intro 1 or make up my own. Style creation itself isn’t that hard for anyone experienced in using a DAW. Just remember to record everything in C!

    Can you make your own styles? . My xs90s has some of the accompaniment features as this keyboard, but they are called arpeggios. Certain sounds are programmed with the appropriate arpeggio, and you can mix and match arpeggios, but there are no global pre-packaged registrations as on the Genos 2. You can have up to four running at the same time. It also is able to read rootless voicings, so it will trigger the correct notes. However, not all of the arpeggios operate with this feature, only certain ones like the walking jazz bass. Seems like Yamaha has had there act together in this regard for a while. The auto accompaniment is not nearly as extensive as this keyboard. Thanks for the demo, and I do like your shirt!

    • @WoodyPianoShack

    Y use registration for the. song . Still difficult for me to use fluently. Y control with pedal? Wonder if it could be possible to have then scrolling even added with lyrics? (helps to memorise the song)
    And one more Q as hint for yr tutorials. How to use the voice and Eq settings to make voices as good and close to above covers..

    Hi Woody. I hope you will have a video on how to record with the Mic without going into the red. I have lowered the volumes in all three places but I just can't seem to get it right. I'll leave it there and if you experiment on your own you will know what I am talking about. Master Volume on the keyboard, then in the keyboard mixer you have another option to either raise the volume or lower it. Then again you have the Gain dial on the pannel of the machine. OH, I don't know what combinations to use so that I avoid clipping "Orange-Red" colours If I turn down the volume in the record section on the far left I don't clip but it is so low that I almost can't hear the instrument and the voice. WOW, and there are no instructions on how to set this vocal stuff up to get a good recording. I don't use the Sub-track to record my voice I do it all together. As in a live performance. That is my only setback at the moment I have had the unit for 3 days so far. I love how it sounds. I hope you can help. I searched the manuals and nowhere does it say how to set up properly. It leaves you to adjust to your own liking. The Tyros 3 had better harmony settings and many more that you can use by just pressing the one you like. I wish I could transfer that load of settings to my Genos 2 I haven't found any information leading me to that. Best Regards Patrick. I don't think much thought had gone into the preparation of the Voice Harmonies. There are only 3 that I like but recording them is almost impossible without clipping.

    I have no interest in these types of keyboards but this video was informative & engaging. Thanks Woody; sorry you had to do it twice!

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i have dabbled with this, not trying to recreate a record but just coming up with something unique to jam with. i wonder if it is possible to do a recreation using the onboard style creator? yamaha themselves use proprietary and internal software tools.

    • @mrdali67
      @mrdali67 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can surely record your own style either totally from scratch in realtime with loop on/off or step mode. You can also chose an existing style and enter style creator, delete tracks you want to re record to match what you want to use it for. You can also copy say the bass track from style x variation1-4 on to another style variation 1-4 if you have a bass track that is cool in one style and combine it with a Drum 1-2 track of another .. like why try to invent the wheel if you can combine the stuff from different styles that is already perfectly recorded. You also have pc/mac software for converting a midi file into a style. It's not perfect, but with with experimenting with the settings for the extraction you can edit each variation / intro /Ending / Fill afterwards to fix where the software fails to get the right chords just like you edit a miditrack in say cubase. The style files is basically just a midi file with markers for intro's /Endings/Fills/variation recorded in say C major and the chord detection in the instrument do the transpose for you as you play the chords. So there is quite many advanced tools.
      Also those Multi Pads can be much more than what they used to be back in the days where they were just short midi loops or sound effects. You can record a backing track of any audio that will sync with your performance or be activated manually... just have to time the activation correctly. It's quite an advanced machinery if you want to be creative you can go far beyond what was possible 20 or 30 years ago. Many of todays top arranger boards is more or less just as powerfull a workstation as dedicated workstation Synths .. just lesser focus on the onboard sound design as a dedicated synth.

    Woody, Genos 2 is an excellent instrument and quite expensive. It's not for everyone. I'm not an instrumentalist and so I just stick with Ableton Live and my favorite plugins. An instrument as expensive and with as much technology as the Genos 2 would require Piano Roll and Arrangement view. My 90s Korg Triton has Arrangement view and Piano Roll.

Why this isn't in the Genos 1 or 2 is beyond me.

At least if you arent using the auto acomp. you really should be able to have 4 freely definable zones or overlaps, .. It can't be that difficult to do in .. nearly 2024 🤔 There is so many good orchestral sounds. Would be nice if you could set up a patch with Strings or brass sounds that is layered all out for the right range so you don't play trombones in the top or a picolo trumpet in the bottom.
