And three years later, fortunately, it is still there. Wells Cathedral is a magic place. I've been there last july for the first time in my life. Choirs of course are excellent. People are very friendly (priests, verger, personell). And then there is...this cat, Luois. Once you meet it for the first time you can't forget it. A Church in wich animals are allowed to stay in is always a good Church.
Aaaw. That's cute. I believe Southwark had a resident cat, Doorkins. Cathedrals, number 10, the Treasury, the Foreign Office. These cats are taking over all the seats of power!
Heh! That's true! I once was startled by him at one advent service several years ago. Made me jump out of my skin and I sang a rather flat note in a hymn. By the consequences of that!
I have heard that he has sadly passed away. And that is very sad to hear. What a distinct and unique life he had. If I could ask God to do one thing. It would be to request that Louis be granted every Mackerel available. He is going to be missed but concurrently he is likely to be fondly remembered. Terrified the dickens out of me some 10 years ago, but I don't hold that against him. Called to the cat basket next to God's throne. I think that I will miss him.
When my sister in law was in the process of buying herself a ginger tabby she was going to have called Princess I had said don't you call tom cats Prince and she had shouted at me how Princess was a little girl! Then she had brought the new arrival home and had bought loads of stuff for it like you do a new baby and I had said to her you would think you were having a BABY not buying yourself a kitten so its name was changed to Baby at the last minute due to my comment! Baby will be 17 in April and is spoilt!
I've been to Wells! My caving partner's father explored Wookey Hole Cave in the 1950s, so on my one and only trip I made sure we visited Wells, but we didn't tour the Cathedral (it must have been shut). If I ever go back to England (I'm from Kentucky) the conundrum will be whether to retrace my earlier steps or see all new things. But if I do go back to any single place, it would have to be Wells and environs. To someone who knows something about caves, the county of Somerset is a very special place, indeed.
@@bandu2512 Thank you, I know of the Lake District because of my interest in Beatrix Potter, and will research Lulworth Cove. I've been studying maps of the UK for years, filling in my geographical knowledge one suggestion at a time. Many thanks for yours.
@@rebeccaschroder3000 that's a funny way to put it, the Ancient one, be nicer perhaps to write simply yes and how sad but we all depart the mortal coil, but the ancient one, there are many cats would love the chance to die old.
Even the Prophet Mohammed had a cat who regularly laid next to him during his prayers. I guess God likes to send his emissaries to be by our side to let us know she's listening to our prayers.
Legend has it that The Prophet, when called to pray, did not want to disturb his beloved cat Muezza so he cut off the sleeve of his robe. Also it's said one day Mohammed slightly tipped his cup so that a cat passing by could drink some water 💓
@king k Ah. Thata interesting. No wonder cats are so haughty. Lol. What with ancient Egyptians worshipping them, Christian's and Muslims giving them free reign of their houses of worship, it's no wonder they have a little air of superiority.🤣 All creatures give glory to God in their own way. Our animals are one of his greatest gifts to us.
It would be Great if someone Really Care about the cat, to feed him healthy food with No Animal by products, give him fresh water everyday, a cozy warm bed for winter, another bed for summer time and Lot's of Love 😀😇💖😼😇
Just to state that not all ginger cats are boys, my ginger cat is a girl, she is from a litter of 8 kittens, of which 6 were ginger. Of the ginger kittens, 5 were girls.
More ginger cats are male than female due to how the odds of genetics work, but it's perfectly possible to have ginger females. I know of several ginger female cats.
Was singing in a visiting choir...we went to take communion and while walking from the movable nave stalls to the line (there's no altar rail at the nave altar at Wells) this manky puss cuts me off. While standing waiting to receive communion, the cat sits on one of the predellas, staring at the choir, and I start losing it, giggling out of control and the other Can tenor is furious "be quiet-this is embarassing!-SHUT UP", my shoulders shaking uncontrollably cassock & surplice trembling-
It's not true that all ginger cats are male; female gingers aren't as common as males, but they do exist. A far more reliable method of establishing the sex of a cat is simply to examine the equipment (or lack of it) at the rear end.
Not in Wells it isn't! we like to be traditional, and Virger is the original spelling, as used by the Cathedral staff here... From Wikipedia: "A verger (or virger, so called after the staff of the office, Latin virga = twig, rod) is a person, usually a layman, who assists in the ordering of religious services, particularly in Anglican churches."

Any man who treats innocent animals with love is nearest to God.
Amén to that.
His fur color is the perfect camouflage among the oak pews. This cathedral is his turf that he allows others to use occasionally.
“He likes all of the attention and he gives none back.”
So, in other words, he’s a cat.
Pretty much. 😊
That comment is hilarious! :)
Cats are more aware of your presence than you realise, which when you think about it makes a cathedral a puurfect place for them!
Every cathedral needs a cat
he is like a King watching over his kingdom. He is serious about his regime.
Actually he is thinks himself a deity with all the worship being aimed at him

Yep, but Dawkins is semi feral. I was trying to get a photo, accidentally disturbed him and got a swipe on my hand. Ouch
Doorkins Magnificat crossed the rainbow bridge, and on that day a new cat arrived at Southwark Cathedral. He is a tuxedo cat & his name is Hodge.

I know Louis has since passed but I'd like to correct one tiny detail, Ginger cats are not all male, about 20% are female

The English conveying their deepest affection to animals whilst mostly sublimating them with their own
