Mouse catching might improve if you take off the bell. If the mouse hears the cat coming, his ability to catch the vermin is greatly reduced.
I think it's mostly about scaring away the mice.
He's probably learned to hunt with the bell, keeping his head still while hunting, we put a bell on my cat and he learned fast how to hunt with the bell.
The bell invoke fear and trauma on rats and might become urban legend in Rat's sewer.
It's a balancing act esp if he thinks Birds are more delicious. The bell is an effective warning system for most birds while for most mice that hear the bell, it will be the last thing they'll ever hear.

I had the great privilege of meeting Palmerston at the FCO when attending a diplomatic function there. Our meeting was quite by accident...I was coming up the main stairs when suddenly he appeared at the top. He was extremely friendly and allowed me the great honour of stroking him. A credit to the FCO...👏👏👏

Wow, his white markings are gorgeous. I love him so much more because he came from Battersea Cats and Dog's Home. I would never, never buy an animal - I think it's totally wrong when so many need homes. Just look at the PM's dog - he's cute beyond words and he's a rescue too!

Quite a long way cats have traveled, from non formal rodent catchers in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, to official pest keepers in goverment palaces. Good for these furry friends, and good for their human employeers who still treat them as beautiful pets.
I get a bit of Arsenal vs Liverpool type of rivalry between the two famous cat FCs at their respective govt offices, what with Sir Simon dotingly throwing British shade on Larry with Palmerston's "performance indicators" and popularity as govt employee lolol oh lawd this is great! I want more. Also, I'd vote for these guys seeing their genuine love for kitty :) Bless you, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home for all your good work towards rescuing these lovebugs!

My cat catches more than twenty mice a year, problem is they’re all mice that she actually brings into the house from the garden!
It's her way of thanking you for feeding her now she's returning the favour and feeding you!
I had a cat that did that, unfortunately for the rat I also had a jack Russell terrier. Unfortunately for me I had 2 am wake ups of cat and dog chasing a rat behind my grandfather clock. 😅
