I haven't seen Hot Fuzz, but I have heard it's very funny! And I also heard about "the bishop of Bath & Wells" from Blackadder but I haven't looked it up yet. Hopefully I can find it on TH-cam...
Cousin Mark is a hard act to follow but you've done it superbly Dara. I was just as fascinated by your stroll around Wells as with Mark's commentary in last week's Cathedral video. What a gorgeous little tow... city. Vicar's Close was fascinating. Incredible that it has been a residential street for nearly 700 years. Plenty of time to get to know the neighbours. The rhubarb and custard cake was the... icing on the cake. I haven't had rhubarb for ages and then coincidently we had a rhubarb and strawberry crumble this week. 😂
@@MagentaOtterTravels We had a lot of rhubarb as kids but I was never a fan. It was always too sour. But as I've got older it seems that there is a right way to prepare it. I like the stuff now 😀 Happy Thanksgiving for Thursday too 🦃
Love, love, love your background music, Dara! The masonry is phenomenal for being the 1200's. Reminds me a bit of the British show Larkrise to Candleford. To construct such massive buildings must've taken literally years with several dozen masons. Thank you for the wonderful tour of Wells. Decidedly on my list of lovely cities to visit next summer ~
If my childhood memory serves me correctly, somewhere in the centre of Wells there is a long brass strip set into the pavement which commemorates the distance jumped by Mary Rand to win Olympic gold -I believe she was a native of the city.
We live in England during the summer and travel around the UK. The rest of the year we live in Texas. We recently published a video about "retiring to England" which gives more information on our situation. 🇬🇧🇺🇸
Thank you for putting us right on what to feed the ducks and swans 👍 Good to know. There's a scene in the film "About a Boy" where they throw a chunk of the boy's mother's homemade "healthy" bread to a duck - and it kills it dead! 🤣🤣 It's okay, I don't think any ducks were actually harmed in the making of the film! 😅
Now that I know no ducks were harmed... that is HILARIOUS!!! When I posted my Bourton on the Water vlog, I showed a man feeding bread to the plentiful crowd of ducks on the river. Some subscribers were up in arms, so I felt I needed to do my part to set the record straight on care and feeding of waterfowl!
No, but when I AM in Britain I am filming CONSTANTLY... so I end up with so much footage I can never get enough time to edit and publish it! haha I'm here in Texas trying to crank out as many videos as I can!
We're off to Wells this Wednesday, for a couple of nights stay at the Crown Inn. Meeting up with a couple of friends for lunch at the City Arms (Old Gaol) on Thursday.👍

Wells is a beautiful place to visit and it's so easy if you're exploring Stonehenge and Bath. It's very much worth your time to go there especially if you're driving in that area vs taking a day group excursion from London. I know most Americans don't want to drive in the UK especially since 99% of us are going to fly into London but it's possible to rent a car outside of Central London so you don't have to drive there. And really unless you're lucky enough to live in London with a car so you need to drive there then just don't drive in London at all.
I agree, Christian! Go to Bath and go to Wells! And if you must, stop by Stonehenge... but Wells is better than Stonehenge IMHO ;-) And definitely avoid driving in London. It's an amazing place to bike, walk and ride the Tube. Happy Thanksgiving! XX Dara
@@MagentaOtterTravels And to you as well!! My first trip to Stonehenge was 1984 and it's much different than it is now. We were on that motorcoach tour from London to Bath and Stonehenge but back then the parking area was maybe 100 yards from the 'stones' and you were actually able to walk amongst them. Of course they had docents or attendants that lead visitors around and kept folks from trying to harm the stones but you were actually allowed to touch them. The next time I went was with my dad and grandfather in the late 90s and it was wildly different. You couldn't get anywhere near the stones except on their bus and the price to do it was eye watering. Today is my 50th birthday celebration so I've been out with my wife for a wonderful meal of my favorite chicken mole enchiladas. Hope y'all had a good Sunday!!

Me too! Crazy weather that day... super hot, then super rainy, then mild!
I am so late to the party on this one! Wells looked lovely! Thank you for the tour!
No worries, thanks for joining the party! Wells is definitely a city I would recommend visiting. I just expected a great cathedral, but it has so much more! Cheers! Dara
Nice to see a moat that's filled with water and looking so healthy. They can stagnate and smell bad if the water isn't replaced regularly.
I'm guessing this one is fed by the local springs.
Good point! I bet the local springs are a great water source. It was indeed a lovely moat! Perfect setting there with the palace and the pretty swans!
You look beautiful with your hair up! Another great tour Dara, Ian we loved the drone shots too. Cousin Mark has been a great asset for history! Thank you for bringing us along! ~Cara 💖
Thanks very much, Cara! My hair looks like a mess from the side and back when it's up, but I'm glad it was OK in front view. It was a NECESSITY when it was so bloomin' hot!!!
@@MagentaOtterTravels friend I have more bad hair days than good…mostly up here. You looked great!! And what a wonderful video! 💖
Thank you Cara. The conditions for droning were perfect.
Hi, Dara. When was it 40 (C)degrees? It's below freezing-points in the US. Barr.
Wow, that's an honor! An original street with houses, a garden, a chapel, a hall, and a school. Vicker's Close was given an iconic symbol 1:50. It was amazing to learn only this smallest city's features, but also its engineering. For swans, I would say no feeding at all. They will lose their natural instinct to hunt/fish themselves. Of course, a little cafe is charming to stop by. finger sandwiches? a sense of cake? with cuppa. Oh..Swans.. remind me of Stephen and Yhana's kayaking trip. I guess, the swans are territorial and they were attacked by. Thank you very much for taking us to this tiny city.
In the middle of July, it was 40°C or around 100°F in England. That is extremely hot for them!
@@MagentaOtterTravels Oh...nice..
@@Poliss95 so tell me, Boppy, how hot was it in Wells on 18 and 19 of July. I don't think it actually got to 40. I think it was just high 30's.
Hi Dara, have you fully recovered from Covid? Wonderful cathedral, wonderful video. So much interesting information. Thank you for sharing this video. We were in Cornwall again for a fortnight at the end of September. It was beautiful there again. I'm already looking forward to next year, maybe at the beginning of May. We also like to see old churches and buildings on our trips. I wish you a good, healthy time. Take care of yourselves. Gabi 😊
Hiya Gabi! I'm all better now, thanks for asking! Covid knocked me flat for a couple weeks, and then I had mild fatigue for a couple more, but now I'm back to being my usual hyper self! LOL
So glad you were able to enjoy a lovely trip to Cornwall! I only spent a few minutes there this summer, and am anxious to return for a proper trip soon. I agree... old churches, cathedrals and other buildings with great architecture are a special treat to see when travelling! Happy Holidays to you and yours! Cheers! XX Dara
I certainly don’t miss that ghastly hot weather.
Thank goodness it was cooler inside the cathedral and the old church. Outside it was TOO hot to be walking around. But it was my only day in Wells and we had been trying to get there for over a year... so we had to endure ;-) Cheers! XX
IT'S JUNE 14TH 2024, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE WEATHER SO-FAR , IT HARDLY STOPS RAINING, ICEY COLD RAIN, STORM FORCE WINDS, AND I'M WEARING WINTER CLOTHES, AND HEATINGS STILL ON.
Personally, l would rather have this weather but one doesn’t a choice . Oh, the sun has just come out here.
The Bishop of Bath and Wells is famous from appearing in 'Blackadder'......;-) Wells is where 'Hot Fuzz' was filmed also.
You did?!?! Well done! I had raspberry rhubarb pie for lunch! It's my favourite... I make it every Thanksgiving!
@@MagentaOtterTravels We had a lot of rhubarb as kids but I was never a fan. It was always too sour. But as I've got older it seems that there is a right way to prepare it. I like the stuff now 😀
Happy Thanksgiving for Thursday too 🦃
@@ShaneNixonFamily yes, we had rhubarb growing in our back garden when I was a child and I didn’t appreciate how wonderful it can be!
That is a show I still need to watch! Thank you for the reminder! And as always, thanks for watching 💖🙏
super! well - ese ya!~ =))
If my childhood memory serves me correctly, somewhere in the centre of Wells there is a long brass strip set into the pavement which commemorates the distance jumped by Mary Rand to win Olympic gold -I believe she was a native of the city.
That is a fun fact! Thanks for sharing ;-) Cheers! Dara
@@MagentaOtterTravelsyes - I saw it on my trip to Wells this year 😊 it really was a loooooong jump! 😮
Yes I remember it is there! Wells used to be famous for this but now it seems forgotten.
Oh Dara....did you get those magenta platform shoes??? 🤩🤩🤩
No, because I am a MINIMALIST! hahahaha
It looks lovely. Do you live in the UK Magenta ? Great videos.
We live in England during the summer and travel around the UK. The rest of the year we live in Texas. We recently published a video about "retiring to England" which gives more information on our situation. 🇬🇧🇺🇸
@@MagentaOtterTravels OK, I'll have a look. You obviously like the UK then x
Are you permanently on holiday! I'm looking forward to watching this later.
No, but when I AM in Britain I am filming CONSTANTLY... so I end up with so much footage I can never get enough time to edit and publish it! haha
I'm here in Texas trying to crank out as many videos as I can!
@@MagentaOtterTravels Please keep them coming 🙂
We're off to Wells this Wednesday, for a couple of nights stay at the Crown Inn.
Meeting up with a couple of friends for lunch at the City Arms (Old Gaol) on Thursday.👍
Hiya JR! I'm excited to hear about your upcoming trip to Wells! If you haven't visited all the cool places there, I hope my vid inspires you to do so. For example, don't miss the cathedral AND the parish church ;-) I'd love to hear a report on your visit! Cheers! Dara
@@MagentaOtterTravels We've been going to Wells for years - business and pleasure.
@@jacketrussell very lucky!
@@MagentaOtterTravels You wouldn't believe what we saw in the Bishops Palace moat on Thursday evening..............An Otter!

And if you must, stop by Stonehenge... but Wells is better than Stonehenge IMHO ;-)
And definitely avoid driving in London.
@@christianoliver3572 HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! 🎂
That sounds like a delicious meal!😋
@@MagentaOtterTravels My favorite!
What a beautiful historic town! Is is near Bath?
Approx 22 miles, a lovely place.

9:19 this is another beautiful illustration of the biblical story of the Book of Revelation that we talked about in your last video.
Yes, exactly!
Is this school still in use??? That would indeed be awesome to go to school there!!
YES! It's currently a school... and it was founded in 909 AD! That is so old! It was originally a school for the choristers and clergy of the cathedral.
I bet the children think some of their teachers were there when the school was founded!
Hi: I'm David's partner (Dara's & Ian's cousin); and the School still provides the choristers for the cathedral.
Another very well made and informative film. I noticed an American flag in St Cuthbert's, have you any info on this?
10:56 I show the flag a couple times, but it’s at this point at the end of the video that I explain where it comes from and show the plaque next to it. It was a gift from an army colonel after World War II, I believe.
@@MagentaOtterTravels Many thanks Dara, look forward to your films in the new year.

Did you get too witness the clock bells on the cathedral
Yes, but I did NOT get great footage of it... so unfortunately the clock bit ended up "on the cutting room floor" (to use a term that makes me sound like the old lady that I am!) . Sorry!
