- Hi guys! Matt here! This is a performance of CHVRCH BVRNER from our current tour. I wasn’t going to post this because I actually think it’s pretty sloppy in places, as I was still trying to dial in my live performance of this song. You can practice all day, but when you get on stage and adrenaline takes over, it’s a whole new ball game, and this video is a great reflection of that. In fact, the reason why I’m choosing to post this is because it’s a completely real, live performance, fueled entirely by excitement, emotion, energy, and adrenaline, and despite small mistakes here and there, I’m actually really stoked on this, because when I watch it I can see clearly that I’m having a shit ton of fun, and that, is what it’s all about. I teach this in my classes - to me, it’s so much more fun, exciting, important, and impressive, to see a drummer let go, have fun, and get lost completely in the performance, rather than worry about every pattern, every part, and every hit within every measure they play. This job is supposed to be fun, not stressful, and if I worried about every note, my performances would be miserable - not only for me, but for the audience. I’d be in my own head, thinking about every note, rather than just simply being in the moment, being present, and physically becoming the performance, and the audience would certainly be able to tell the difference. I’m not always perfect at achieving this, and I get in my own head all of the time, but I always try to remind myself to “be” where my ass is seated - to be present with the show! Be on stage, interact with my band mates, interact with the audience, and just have fun! This is an awesome job, and it shouldn’t be unnecessarily stressful for anyone. Have a good time, be present, and leave it all on the stage - that’s always my goal, and I hope you enjoy it! Thanks for reading!

This is why he's one of my favorite drummers. Even if his playing here isn't perfect it's full of energy and it sounds amazing. Some absolutely mind blowing chops on display here.

Thanks for the personal message from Matt! I love that you guys freely step out of your serious roles to just be musicians and have fun all the time, that’s one of the many things that makes Periphery so great.

Matt, this is just brilliant. Thank you for sharing, even apprehensively. I have to say - without blowing smoke - your 'sloppy' on any given day is about 100x less sloppy than a whole bunch of other pros and quality amateurs I have witnessed. You're killin' it, brother.

I saw this show and it was amazing!!! By far the best concert I have ever been too!!!
Even if it's sloppy at some parts matt, You can hear it's still you playing this. And I think that's a simple, but wholesome ingredient to what makes your drumming or more overall the band, outstanding in performance. Periph on.

All their live stuff is mixed/recorded by Alex Markides. From what it seems like, they had the drum track/ mics on recording from Alex's setup and gave it to the people filming to overlay the sound onto the video (to prevent shitty camera sound).
It’s supposed to be a drum play through, the drums are supposed to be louder than everything else

Live drum mixes pulled from the mixer usually sound thinner than studio mixes. Venue PAs pump out tons of low end so this actually sounds massive IRL

I think it is "flawed" due to the bad recording of it on this one. So the recording is bad not the performance. With a better recording it is better sounding as you will be able to hear more than just drums and someone's voice that are saying words but not in a way that you can make out what they are saying.

Yup, this was HOB Boston! I was one of the photographers there that night, Veil of Maya and Periphery killed it, and Covet were so great live! Yvette is such an amazing guitarist, I'm glad I got to see her perform.
@@oldguyrips535 I was there as well! Best night of my life! The selection of bands was cohesive but had a huge range amongst them. Covet and Periphery are tied for my favorite band, and I'm a huge fan of Veil of Maya after seeing their energy live.
@@noyd4172 VoM was incredible live! 10x more energy that I had expected, and I was expecting a killer performance from them. Periphery is crazy tight live, which is exactly what I had expected from them. all in all, I was super happy with the show, especially since it was the first time seeing all three of those bands!

I would love to see a full good periphery show. I'm in SA so not much opportunity to really see them live
Love Matt's comment. 100% real. You have to be a pretty technical drummer to notice the slop, but I would be in the same boat until I had a chance to play the song over and over again. You can tell he nailed the polyrhythms, but just a bit of slop on the fills. That's one of the things I love about Periphery and that they're real with everyone. It takes a lot to admit that to 140K subscribers and a lot to post this. I recorded a playthrough of Flatline and only did 2 takes. Screwed up the first one bad enough to do a retake. I had a sloppy start in to the slow part, but posted it anyways. Sometimes you just gotta post stuff instead of trying to get it perfect in 100 takes.
