Nice work. I built a load of Tamiya 1/35th German Military models during the 70's and 80's. Can't anymore, sadly. Failing eyes and arthritic hands ended my modelling hobby. I do miss it though. it was always so very relaxing/therapeutic.
I'm with you there...I forget who said it but "getting old isn't for sissies". I'm blind in my dominant eye, I have tremors in my hands and I have the attention span of a three-year-old. I have to build large scale because 1/350th ships and 1/35 figures are just too small. I have all the tools any modeler could ask for but nothing replaces the Mk.I human. This guy is really impressive.
my hands are not as nimble as they were, but I built plenty in 70s/80s too and to very good standard.. have tried over last 10years to build and paint some vehicles but just not nimble or patient as I was.
Honestly I am not even joking, your painting is a thing of magic. The mins of you just applying such brilliant painting and the process you use to go with it. It is absolutely fantastic! I will definitely use those steps. Also I completely agree with you. The painting of Tamiya figures are so good for the price you pay for them, if only my painting was better then it is right now.
Hi Hank. Outstanding work mate. Figures have always been a bugbear of mine but watching this has got me having another go. Thanks for the watch and, as always, happy modelling.
Personally, i really love when those figures are looking like this, simply painted, clear and realistic looking, i usually dislike when figures at this scale have that cartoonish look with outlines or even whites in the eyes it just looks kinda eh to me, but yours are just a pleasure to look at, cant wait to try this technique myself and ofc for another figure painting video!
Great video. The mini looks great man. As a kid in the late 70's and early 80s i loved browsing and trying my hand at Tamiya WWII minis. My Dad was actually stationed in Japan for 6 months back then and I was in heaven living in Japan and going to the local hobby shop where there was an ocean of Tamiya models to check out. As a kid I had as much fun looking at the amazing looking Tamiya boxes and browsing all the wonderful Tamiya models as I did building and painting them.
Nicley done. Sometimes you can substitute Tamyia NATO Black XF69 instead flat black for the belt and/or some of the equipment. It makes a bit of a faded-out look and a contrast between items.
Always great to see how people do things. I do mine differently but in the end they come out thr same. Good to see Tamiya finally coming into the 21st century and catching up to other makers.
I finished up a Dragon MG team not two days before your video announcing this kit. The Dragon kit was both a great bargain (on the "sale" table at my local hobby shop) and a chore to assemble, with soft details, some out-of-scale equipment, and 1980s tooling quality. Nowhere close to the quality of this Tamiya kit. I need to build one of these to restore my enthusiasm for 1:35 figures.
I may have previously commented on this video...but...this is crazy good, I mean insanely good (and I ought to know, because I'm insane). I'll be honest, I'm only a moderately, just okay builder with a vast amount of experience at being a mediocre builder. I have come back to this video several times just to enjoy watching someone "knock it out of the ballpark".
Really enjoyed this watch as it's NOT a scary one for beginner's. There's too many 'advanced/competition' level tutorials on TH-cam compared to ones that show how to do the basics. So very well done. And it does indeed look like a lovely sculpt.
Thanks very much! I appreciate it - I strive to make this hobby as accessible to as many folks as possible... it can certainly be intimidating sometimes!
Yikes - that is a NICE figure. WOW - when I was building the Tamiya figures in the 1980s - one had to PAINT the shoulder-boards. Was amusing - a few times I made an enlisted figure a Major for giggles.
@@SpruesNBrews Can’t wait! I’m working on a US Airborne army for Bolt Action so I love getting more thoughts on how to paint M43 uniforms and other late war equipment.
HANK I WAITED FOREVER FOR THIS VIDEO I LOVE IT!!!!! I LOVE YOUR CONENT PLEASE MAKE MORE I SCREAMED AS SOON AS I SAW YOU POSTED (kinda wish he had a strap but it’s amazing and better work than mine!
Just goes to show for that there are infinite ways to paint a great looking miniature. Probably will never see it, but would love to see plastics of this scale and quality in other historical periods; Greeks, Romans, Medieval, Napoleonic’s, Civil War, etc. Traditionally I’ve painted 28mm, and today’s plastics have never looked better, but l don’t game, so 1/35 scale with all that extra detail would be absolutely amazing.
Outstanding paint work! Looks so real. Congrats on 💯k subs! I have a question on where did you get those paint brushes? Perfect that detail work. Thanks,Al.
Hey Hank, can you use enamel Dark wash if you have given the figure a gloss coat of Pledge instead of AK or other gloss. Please, please can we have some more H.E.A.T.S. cheers.
I've found that sometimes the enamel products can react poorly with Pledge... it's been a little bit since I've tried it, I'll admit, but just proceed carefully. Perhaps do a test on an old figure first? Good luck & happy painting!
This is a great guide and perfect timing - have the needed colors and 3 unpainted figures that came with the Tamiya PAK 40. Have painted uniform, boots and helmets - Just about to paint skin tones. I am clueless when it comes to historical colors for figures. Thanks.
A few dashes of silver paint would’ve helped on the binocular case to represent small scratches on his equipment . I think these solders look why better when they’ve been distressed however i can’t fault the painting !!
Very nice - Tamiya's later plastic figures are leaps and bounds better than their earlier very stiff and boring figures - which, admittedly, had better possibilities for custom work and modifications than the newer ones. A couple of notes: inside the strap of the small tool box worn on the belt, there should be a piece of brown (asbestos(!)) cloth, used as protection when ripping out a way too hot pipe from the gun. If necessary, I just add a couple of small strips of paper painted brown and call it done. The metal parts of the equipment, especially the cup and the mess till, were rarely neatly painted - they flaked from the start, and its common to see these as bare metal. The field tool was painted black, with a lacquered handle. The helmet should have a black strap - it can either be fitted with a thin strip of plasticard or just painted; for me it depends on how well the face is visible. The shoulderboards are a nice addition, but way too bright; a way darker green should be used. Speaking of, the collar was often even later in the war also dark green, to the point where soldiers issued later models of uniforms added this dark green themselves, either by replacing the collar or sewing dark green fabric on top of it. Weird, I know. Still, a good paintjob, very no nonsense.
Thanks! And I was wondering about that too... the kit does instruct that piece to be there, so I'm guessing that some sort of fighting knife would have been standard issue, even for MG troops! Will have to look into it.
Every few years Tamiya puts out a kit that sets a new standard within their own 1/35 MM range. I thought it was the US Scouts set which was also amazing, but with where this kit took it, I think we have our generation-changer.

I’m getting worse myself. Results aren’t as good but it’s the process I still enjoy.
From the poses of the figures its clear they referenced stock war photos. They are correctly posed as they would be in real life.
Do u use super glue to glue the soldiers to the jig and dose it leave any glue behind

Oh shoulder boards. I remember painting those many times in the 70s and 80s. There were articles about it in the magazines of the day. Fun times.
Haha fair enough! These decals do make it a bit easier 🙂
And on the Tamyia boxes! Do you remember the Tamyia trifold brochure? Wow I wore that out looking at it.

I've been making these 1/35 MM series by Tamiya since the 80s and I've learned a new technique or two from you! Thanks!
Been anxiously awaiting this one!!! He looks stellar Hank! I like the trick of leaving the bit of sprue attached to the head. I’ll remember that one!
Thanks so much! It's a handy little trick - works well for me, at least! 👍
Love it, great work, quality looking figure set, nice to see some figures in more action poses, great for a diorama scene

Amazing flesh color 😮
Awesome figure and build and thankfully 🙏 👐 no shiny finishes
Only change I would make on your fine work would be to darken the skin tone to a weathered tan look. The uniform and equipment looks great!
Do you thin your vallejo paints? I've been having some trouble with my figures since they just end up pooling up into one place.
Very nice, I use a lead pencil to highlight the weapons, gives a nice gun metal look to them
