As a Nigerian-immigrant in North America, I have come to one conclusion: Social Justice, wokeness and progressivism can ONLY exist in a developed, liberal and first-world nation/region where there are very few existential threats and where the purposeless masses in urban areas have to create some form of ideology to fill the void in their lives. That is why it makes no sense and destroys that society. That is also why non-western countries and immigrants mostly tend to hate social justice and wokeness more than the native citizens.
I will stand with you in agreement any day; my willingness to stand in agreement, as two Americans, begins yesterday.

Let me get this right, we have a young man from Venezuela, who was accepted into our University system. Then proceeds to tell all of us that the capitalist system we live in, which provided him the opportunity to go to school is racist. My mind is completely blown trying to grasp this concept.

Most people don't think for themselves and believe what others tell them and build their biases accordingly. This is the problem. This is also why so many black kids grow up being told that whitey wants to kill them through police brutality - and the fear of that police brutality makes them behave irrationally CAUSING the police to take reasonable measures which sadly end up sometimes killing them. By inculcating fear and hatred - black parents and "community" unknowingly become the cause of these tragic events.

I like this style of Q&A. It forces people to be introspective about their opinions and brings to light how much time they've spent actually thinking for themselves vs how much they just regurgitate of what colleges and mass media shove down their throats.
I barely made it out of high school and I swear I could formulate my thoughts and ideas more intelligently than some of these college students. Also America is not racist not at all there may be individuals who are racist but America is not. I didn’t need to graduate high school to figure that out.

I have actually pondered this question for quite some time now, and I am fairly smart. My thoughts: #1. The war on drugs is completely and utterly racist! #2. Everyone thinks things that they dare not say in public, my self included. #3. Although the institute of slavery was racist, by and large now a days, African Americans have it pretty good here. #4. I tend not to dwell too much on things that are out of my control.
When only one side of an issue is represented in a discussion like this, because of fear, and nobody can offer anything other than feelings and regurgitated theory, in defense of their stated position, there is a serious problem with critical thinking among that population.

I think it would spark civil discourse with any and all that are open to probe their own thoughts and ideas and ACTUALLY listen to others. This is a great format to facilitate discussion. The main purpose of the discussion isn’t necessarily even about the topic; you’re showing these students that they are not inclined to often think critically. I’ve been in undergrad and graduate university for 8 years, and it’s atrocious that our schools don’t teach students how to properly think through a concept.
I wish more people had come forward for this thought experiment. I would have liked to see more diversity of thought, I think it would have made for a better learning experience but having done this at UC Berkeley I am not surprised no one stood up on the other side of the tape.

I’m pretty far removed from schools, and don’t personally know very many college aged kids so I’m not in a particularly good place to asses, other than watching Peter’s videos. Although, the few college aged kids I do occasionally speak with seem more than willing to accept these assumptions uncritically.

She was merely trying in the most lazy way possible to tell him kind of what she thought would end the conversation, and the piece about learning new things was not directed as a rebuttal to the young Venezuelan man, but as acknowledging she learned from his sharing his life experience.
Which consisted of toddler level logic, and that wasn’t the result of a language barrier.

Do you think we should ban cars whenever there's a series deaths due to impaired driving? The result is the same: death of innocent, or unintended, victims. Yet, because of ease of movement and the freedoms offered by ownership of vehicles, society tends to overlook that part of the equation.
In terms of America being racist, again I respectfully disagree with you. The instances of gerrymandering you pointed out is isolated to specific areas. It is not a nationwide phenomenon. I'll grant there are individuals who have a racist opinion. But then again we as humans have biases in one form or another. Whether those biases are for, or against, one group or another.

She definitely said INequality which of course isn't true. Capitalism isn't a zero sum game and it's possible for participants to bolster all parties, mutually beneficial industries develop alongside one another and competition exists. If inequality exists it's due entirely on the consumer.

So yes, she said "For capitalism to function, there must be inequality." But she doesn't understand that's exactly how capitalism works and that inequality is a good thing. She is clearly anti-capitalist and even tries to link racism to capitalism. This young lady has been trained to be a victim, and the young man too. The phone she's carrying, the clothes she's wearing, her back pack, her eye lashes, her jewelry, her small hand bag, her dyed hair were all brought to her by capitalism. She made a conscious and voluntary decision to buy everything she has with her. I'm guessing she's a supporter of socialism.

What they don't want to admit is that what they are saying when they say that, is that there are too many rich white people. That it's not fair for them and they can't get rich because they aren't white enough or in the club. When they fail to realize there would be no rich black, asian, middle eastern, etc. people in our capitalistic economy/country if that were true. They just want to hate "America" and find an acceptable way to hate wealthy white people. I wonder if they would go to India and call it racist because most of the rich people there are Indian. It's not about America being racist, it's about America not looking the way they want it to I'm pretty sure.
The problem is that they haven't been taught the actual history. They know nothing of the intentions of the founding fathers, nor what the Constitution as currently amended actually says. All they know is, it was written by white men some of whom owned slaves therefore it is tainted and must be thrown out. You can't debate ideas if you don't know what they actually are and only spout what someone else has told you are the system's flaws.
As to "Capitalism requires inequality", I'm sorry, life is inequality and anyone telling you otherwise is lying for their own gain. This statement just points to another young mind filled with utopian visions with no knowledge of the atrocities those same visions have resulted in historically.
I loved the statement, “For capitalism to exist, there must be inequality.” It’s the old mantra of ‘things aren’t fair!’ These kids are going to be shocked when they hit the real world. Baristas and software engineers don’t make the same salary. Try running a cyber company in which the janitor is paid the same as an engineer.
Ok as a Brazilian who has lived in the US for 31 years and is a citizen I now understand Braziians are more racist than Americans. I am a foreigner, I'm black BUT, surprisingly, whites have given me the least amount of grief from ALL demographics, including Brazilians who live in the US. Yes, there's racism in the US but not as bad as advertised.
Here in rural India racism is pretty much normal, intertwined with casteism. By woke standards honestly applied, there probably isn't any country in the world that isn't irredeemably racist. Good thing the woke have different standards to apply to different countries
Being considered racist just because I'm white is quite insulting. I've also easily and with an open mind observed which US demographic is actually racist currently in our country. I don't understand why everyone can't see what I see especially with our nations hyper focus on race.

Here is something to think about. As a white,person I'm told that fighting for the rights of white people is racist. But, there are 9 billion people worldwide and ls than 1 billion are white. is it racist or should white people be able to preserve our heritage since we are clearly the overwhelming minority? Nobody wants to talk about the facts.
Any personal failures are usually put down to racism, instead of lack of ability.

It’s been paramount the past couple of years to teach my daughter that most of the opinions in the education system today have next to no facts to back them up. Kids are not being pushed to research their beliefs. The pack mentality is leading many off the cliff.
A systemically racist society would never:
1. Accuse anyone of racism;
2. Live in fear of being branded racist.

The kids may not have necessarily studied in depth, the questions being asked. Sure, they may have vague ideas and can't express themselves articulately. But 90+ % of the human race is like this. That's why we are called "average people."

All you have to is watch Trump supporters speak. And these are full grown 40 - 50 + year old adults, with years to have learned.
His poorly articulated point is that privately run (i.e. capitalist) prisons benefit from having a larger number of inmates, and for a longer period of time.
In order to become an inmate, the convict needs to have transgressed the laws of the land.
Some groups - for example Jews, find it particularly easy to live within those laws. But then again they would - they have been living within those laws for several thousand years, and they've learned to succeed within them.
Other groups have no history of living within those laws.
And so you have lobbyists for prisons trying to keep legislation in place which maintains their customer base. A good example might be laws around the selling of drugs.

When someone "strongly agrees" that America's laws are racist, they should be able to cite, with little effort, three or four examples of racist laws.

I worked for a company that wanted to help both employees as well as our second most significant client base by teaching us some basic Spanish. We didn't need a lot to communicate what needed to happen and most of us had already picked up most of it by osmosis or whatever. But the people that handle that sort of thing brought in this person with all the qualifications and degrees to make sure we had it right.
They dropped her after 5 weeks of 90 minute sessions because all she did was complain about English and really didn't teach Spanish. I think that was when it really came clear to me if a person can only make a point by complaining they likely don't have much of a point. It is easy to blame someone else. Making a point is a lot harder if you have to prove that point.

As well as wanting to feel purposeful could mean just trying to pursue self fulfilment and that could also lead to biases. A counter argument could feel like an attack on your identity which is why I think during hot topics like this we should aim at trying to suppress our ego’s and try to look at arguments of both sides before settling on a conclusion. But as humans, a highly emotional being i don’t think it’s 100% possible, nothing is black or white, but still a good and important exercise if we actually wanna get somewhere with all this

When I hear about children on a college campus having to go home because of something that happened outside that had absolutely nothing to do with them just a sign asking a question and a professor doing a thought experiment that they are so fragile they have to go home because they can’t work they can’t go to class they can’t function when I see that type of absolute nonsense I scratch my head and wonder what happened to the world I grew up in.
I was a kid in the 70s. I went to high school and college in the 80s. I know what bullying looks like. What’s happening today especially online is not bullying. And there was little to no racism back then and I’m from the deep South.
