I've been fighting with Jeep since June 2018 for the same dead spot in the steering wheel and all I get is, "nothing wrong, all Wranglers drive like this" even though the loaner I had steered better. When I mentioned the loaner steered normal Jeep then blamed my stock Rubicon KO2 tires. WTF? Anyway thanks for the install video Matt, I may end up doing the same thing!
Ya the dealerships are never gonna take responsibility for anything... before I bought it they were like, ohh the warranty is awesome, if you have any problems just bring it in and we'll take care of it no problem. After I bought it they were done with me and didn't want to help with even the simplest tasks and wanted to blame everything on aftermarket parts.
I've had and mentioned to the dealership since July 2018 on my JL Sahara about this. I searched youtube and found a couple of videos that mentioned a software issue. The dealership said they heard nothing about it so I've lived with it since then. As Gow mentioned, a recall was sent to fix a steering issue. I like your idea better but at 31 hundo, where's the lock tight? Great video. Subscribed.
FCA dealers are giving everyone the run around that has this issue. It's a massive cover up and hoping they lose their pants in a negligence or reckless endangerment lawsuit. Some of these vehicles, mine included, are unsafe to drive on the highway.
I traded my Sahara for a Ram a few weeks ago. I had put up with enough. And the Ram drives like a Cadi. I did call and chat with PCS. They were extremely helpful but FCA really screwed up the steering box so much. I enjoy watching your videos and Thank you!!!
Great video!!! And yes these steering problems with pump are still happening on 2020’s, crazy they haven’t sorted this out yet. 3 or 4 pump revisions so far and most people still not happy or notice much improvement with latest AE revision! Glad these are options available
I heard that Jeep discovered that some of the early JLU’s had the incorrect steering code for the two door JL instead of the four door Unlimited code which compensates for the added vehicle length making the JLU squirrelly . When the electric power steering had the JLU code imputed it corrected the issue you were demonstrating. I had a 2018 JLUR that was impacted and totaled it which was under six month and with one oil change and one dealer car wash. A totally impatient foolish youngster trying to play race car on the freeway was culprit. It is now replaced by a 2019 JLUR which I also am very very pleased with, being my fifth Jeep. Thank you for the great presentation. .
First of all, thank you so much for the vide! It is spot on and makes the installation very manageable in the garage. I finished it in under one day. I might suggest that you delete the electronic power steering with the TAZER before you start, because if you forget, the codes are exhausting to get rid of. Second, if you have trouble with your lifted jeep wrangler jlu feeling like it steers all over the place and constantly requires input, this modification will make it go away. The steering is so much better! Shame on you Jeep for not doing anything to make this right.
Matt! Thank you so much for putting this video together. I don’t think I would’ve been able to do my install without your hard work! Nice job and thank you again. Please keep it up!
Great video. I installed new ball joints, drag link, center link and tie rod ends. They helped some. Watching the end of your video has convinced me to replace the stock steering.
Same with my '19 2-door, seems totally fine. I can't believe how bad Matt's was stock! Seems completely irresponsible to sell a vehicle like that... that's FCA for you. lol
@@fret_playa I did the recall for the damper. Initially it made the steering feel totally dead, but I think it wore in a little and feels normal to me again. It might be slightly more stable hitting potholes at highway speeds? ... but I wouldn't say you necessarily need to get it done if you don't want to.
Electric Fiat power steering pumps don't work that's why they are magic if they do and why this kit is needed. I'm thinking Fiat needs to sell DIY Jeeps in a box with the optional parts the buyer wants so you can actually end up with a functional Jeep the first time.
Just bought a brand new 2020 JLUR and I hate to report that the steering issue is still there. At the dealership I drove 2 Rubis, 1 Sport, 1 Sahara, all 4 of them had the exact same issue. The first week of driving was very difficult and stressful, but thankfully I'm now used to it. I believe Jeep has a class action on their hands because this is not normal.
Glad my early build 2018 has perfect steering. I experienced steering issues with my JK and it sucks. My JL on 37's drives with 1 finger on the wheel. Probably the best driving 4x4 I've ever owned.

I have a 2019 JLR n the steering wheel when held has 2-3 inches of loose steering as well.. though if I use 1 hand I find it moving less, or as I have less hands on the wheel, it stays more in lane.. if I let go completely, it drives very in the line I left it in.. so i'm not sure what the issue for my JLR is.. but its ok.. or sucks. either way im loving my jeep!! I drive only on local roads.. n this past weekend I got 22.5MPG 😂😎
I have the 2019 JL and made the change to the PSC Big Bore because the steering was weak on rock with 37" tires. After making the change I discovered that the box may be a little stronger but not noticeable. Because of this I plan on adding the cylinder assist just as Matt did. I am getting some hissing noise from the gear box when the fluid is hot but it steers nice.
BleepinJeep I did add one. I’m on my second box from PSC and second cooler. Bad seals in the first box let to all kinds of issues. Works well now short of the hissing which has me concerned that I may have some kind of deal issues again. I noticed you kept the stock tie rod, any opinion just how susceptible it is when wheeling? I have a Nov. 2018 build JLUR and even though mine is eligible for the steering damper recall, I haven't done it... mostly because our Rubicon drives/tracks great. I plan to leave everything as is until my factory warranty is up, then go Fox all the way around (including the damper). Personally, if I'm dropping my brand-new vehicle off for a warranty issue... I'm not taking possession of it until I am satisfied that the problem is fixed. If I'm not satisfied, the vehicle is going to sit there until I am and the Service Manager/District Manager/Dealership Owner and Ma Mopar is going to hear about it. But for FFS, don't spend $2300 to fix a problem that should be covered under warranty. I mean, if EVERY JL had this issue then you could say it is something inherent to the design... but that's not the case.
Nope they ( Chrysler/FIAT ) have not got it correct. Just as bad on an March 2019 JLUR. Upgraded suspension from Metal cloak and am looking to do steersmart drag link and tie rod with PSC ram assist to correct and Rusty's track bar brace. Now i bought my Jeep knowing I will be upgrading components, but did not realize I had to do it due to faulty engineering.Their is a recall now to correct steering stabilizer, but will not correct the issue. Along with a service bulletin to check welds, but most jeep mechanics do not know what they are looking for. Basically the welds are not full nor sufficient. The track bar bracket is weak. The bushings for the track bar, drag link, and tie rod are super weak and as you gain speed on a road between 35 and 50 and hit a bump you get death wobble. Otherwise you are always having to adjust the steering input every few seconds to correct for inequality in steering equipment.
The reason is that the electric pump only adds assist when you move the wheel. It isnt on pumping all the time. Once you are going the direction you are going it turns off. So you dont have any pressure holding the gear over center.
Matt have you had any issues with steer smart axle side stabilizer mount? I snapped mine on day of commuting, eg mall crawling. Looking into alternatives or custom fab work.
Thank you for the video. Are you still happy with the PSC kit? I see that you replaced the track bar, drag link, and tie rod in the spring. How did that improve the steering compared to stock? I ask because my '19 JLR has *horrible* steering and it's been to the dealer four times as well to a local 4x4 shop. Replacing the OEM drag link with aftermarket was the latest recommendation (already have the Yeti track bar). I'm considering the PSC, but it's an expensive pill to swallow to fix an otherwise stock JLR.
Hey Matt; so, the story as I read about it, is that the early JL's have defective frame-side track bar brackets. The metal is so weak, it flexes, causing the whole front axle to wander. When Jeep started making Gladiators, frame side track bar brackets were breaking. Jeep put a stop sale on a lot of Gladiators and they started producing stronger frame side brackets on both the JT's and the JL's. Put your camera down there and take a look, as you're going down the road.
Now that I've had a chance to watch the whole video, I have to say, comparing your new steering with my JL's steering (built in late May 2019) your new steering is still not as steady as mine. Check your frame side Track Bar Bracket. From what little I've seen of it in this video, it looks rather flimsy. just stepped outside for a quick peek and on mine, you can see how the factory welded an exterior plate to the frame and an exterior plate to the Track Bar Bracket. Can you shoot some photos or video of your bracket to compare with mine?
OK Matt; so, I've posted a quick video of my frame side track bar bracket. th-cam.com/video/b-LOe-4-SCs/w-d-xo.html I've spotted your bracket at 3:07 , 4:32 , 7:36 , 8:12 , 9:05 , 15:12 ; but, the real smoking gun is at 11:35 .... Your JL's bracket is weak compared to mine. If you can get Jeep to fix it, do it. If you can't, time to get some metal and reinforce that bracket in your famous BleepinJeep fashion.
Cool thanks man! I'll have to go look but it does look like they reinforced it a lot more in the later models. I did take it to the dealer to have them check for that and it wasn't under recall for the track bar bracket bad weld issue but I still think they messed up somehow.
@@bleepinjeep The dealerships are pretty much reiterating what is said by corporate. You may want to get your own lawsuit going. It's probably going class-action; but, you won't get much out of that ~ years later. You're in a unique position compared to all other lawsuits. You now know what the real problem is. You can mount a camera under the vehicle and record the track bar bracket as you're going down the road. No amount of aftermarket parts is going to affect that or should affect that. FCA engineers screwed up. That thin metal would never hold up to bigger tires, much less smashing up against a curb or rocks. Track bar brackets should be at least 1/4" thick. Yours looks like 10 gage metal. Mine looks like doubled-up 8 gage; but, really, now I'm thinking I shouldn't go with bigger tires until this bracket is reinforced, even if it's an external bolt on reinforcement. www.autonews.com/regulation-safety/fca-sued-over-alleged-jeep-wrangler-steering-issues
Bit of a let down. I was pouring thru #Wayalife 's Evo build and the one known problem wasn't even touched. I guess this will be a test of how well Jeep's band-aid holds up. th-cam.com/video/RTTEgpvr5zw/w-d-xo.html
I have this same issue with my 1990 Toyota pickup 4x4. Lots of wheel play 1-1.5 inch. I checked all steering, tie rod, ball joints and there are no excessive play. I dont know where to go from there.
If the steering is that bad , why didn’t jeep recall them and have to fix the problem? You’re work is fantastic 👍 but the lack of the chicken 🐓 checker could be an issue 😂
Because of money... I have a JL (2-door) model and although the steering is a bit twitchier, I figured it was just because of the shorter wheelbase and tight turning radius. I got used to it and the only complain that I have is that the stupid electro-hydraulic power steering pump supposedly will not work with my hydraulic winch.
I remember watching this pre-gladiator. Now that I have an aluminum boxed gladiator and saw at the wheel all the time and this is much more relevant. Compared to old CJ’s it’s great though. Then I drove my neighbors new solid axle F350….ok Jeep, your steering sucks. You still liking this kit a year later?
A solid front axle with pitman arm/draglink type steering is always going to perform worse than independent suspension with rack/pinion steering. Combine that with a short wheelbase, and you're almost guaranteed some jankiness... but it's a good tradeoff for the off-road capability.
My JL is a early build and it wanders to much too. It’s a shame that something so expensive has to be re-engineered to perform as it should to start with...
Hello i have a question for you about a 2004 jeep grand cherokee laredo with the map sensor i changed the plug and the map sensor and i am still getting a code any help with that
There’s a lot about the JL Jeeps I really don’t like. Most everyone I know who traded their JK for JL came away disappointed. I don’t mind putting some quality time in the garage. Fixing something that the factory screwed up on a brand new truck would aggravate the crap out of me
It is almost funny to watch the Jeep community only now dealing with this issue because BMW enthusiasts have been furious with the move from hydraulic to electric steering for close to 10 years already. There is virtually no mechanical feedback to the driver on an electric power assist and this not only makes a vehicle more fatiguing to drive but sucks all the enjoyment out of it for those who want to feel connected to the vehicle through steering feel. Placed in an already less imprecise system like that of a Jeep with a solid front axle, the problem is only exacerbated. Electric steering is inferior to hydraulic but they are forcing it upon us because it is maintenance free and helps them reduce weight helping to improve mandated fuel economy requirements. These regulations therefore only serve to reduce the capability and thus the safety of vehicles.
I imagine that you intend on keeping that pump, maybe to re-install it back in, at a later date???? But if not, can you, or will you take it apart and show what in inside of this electric pump, to see what type of pump it is, like a variable rate multi-media pump, or if it is just a typical game pump or gearotor type pump, that is just electric powered, and still runs all the same type of metering and by-pass valving?... Of course in a video... Not obligated, and wouldn't be mad if you didnt, due to the cost of possible sale to somebody in need of one and make some capital to offset the cost of building this Jeep that you told your lady you wouldn't modify, lol... Not that she would complain rocking out a nice looking rig like hers...thank you for this video... I am glad, as I would have told somebody "sure, bring it by, I'll have your pump changed out in 30 minutes!" ... And then spending 45 minutes simply looking for the damn thing, having never played with one of these before... Lol
@@bleepinjeep Hence, Take it apart so we both have an idea.... we both win, you get to make a video, and I get to learn something, and bonus, so do you brother...
Did you new fender for your jeep already?
Did you change the fenders for this jeep already?
The reason is that the electric pump only adds assist when you move the wheel. It isnt on pumping all the time. Once you are going the direction you are going it turns off. So you dont have any pressure holding the gear over center.
well thats not cool, I didnt like the feel of that.
WOW! I remember when Jeep took #LiteBrite 's Jeep back, when it was doing that, and gave them a different Jeep. So, that's what that was about.
@@bleepinjeep it is something to get used to. It's just different from what we are used to
Do you think this would work on a JK?
When did you install fenders?
Matt have you had any issues with steer smart axle side stabilizer mount? I snapped mine on day of commuting, eg mall crawling. Looking into alternatives or custom fab work.
Hmmm, no issues yet. Where did it snap?
Vertically at the track bar bolt hole. The tab welds were still intact.
I sent you a Facebook msg with photos, who knows it could be the loose nut behind the wrench.
Matt, did you drill and tap the steer smart bracket on the tie rod or something else to get the 5/8 bolt to mount?
See another solution 5/8” -11 bolt..
Do they have a kit for the jl diesel?
Price for your old power stering?
Thank you for the video. Are you still happy with the PSC kit? I see that you replaced the track bar, drag link, and tie rod in the spring. How did that improve the steering compared to stock? I ask because my '19 JLR has *horrible* steering and it's been to the dealer four times as well to a local 4x4 shop. Replacing the OEM drag link with aftermarket was the latest recommendation (already have the Yeti track bar). I'm considering the PSC, but it's an expensive pill to swallow to fix an otherwise stock JLR.
Its gonna make it stronger in the rocks but no noticeable difference for me.
@@bleepinjeep Thank you for taking the time to respond!
Now take the stock parts back to Jeep and make them buy them back. LOL.

Bit of a let down. I was pouring thru #Wayalife 's Evo build and the one known problem wasn't even touched. I guess this will be a test of how well Jeep's band-aid holds up. th-cam.com/video/RTTEgpvr5zw/w-d-xo.html
Nice work Matt, very thorough my man. The wife is looking at JKU's right now, is the process similar to your JL?
Well, very similar
I have this same issue with my 1990 Toyota pickup 4x4. Lots of wheel play 1-1.5 inch. I checked all steering, tie rod, ball joints and there are no excessive play. I dont know where to go from there.
Maybe the gear box is old
Hahahaha absolutely awesome video, very inspiring for my own channel and build
I have 2011 jeep jk get vibration driving 60 km I've changed ball joints. Bearing. U joints. 3inch lift on 35s any suggestions thanks
My guess would be tires, or driveshaft issues.
Cool video, but what's the average Joe who's not sponsored by PSC supposed to do? I can't afford that kit!
If the steering is that bad , why didn’t jeep recall them and have to fix the problem?
You’re work is fantastic 👍 but the lack of the chicken 🐓 checker could be an issue 😂
🤣
Haven't been watching videos for a while (got rid of my MJ toy, and I keep XJ stock). Matt, is this your Wrangler? You like it?
its the wifes... she seems to like it!
Dang Matt you have almost bought new Jeep and half with all the mods to make it better
I know right
@@bleepinjeep but you have what you wanted and helped all of us see what to do . Thanks for the videos
@@bleepinjeep hay I know thier not a real Jeep but my fiance has a Jeep renegade . Maybe some cool mods if possible
man have you grown in making videos lol still good but i like the new way better :)
That was a great informative video Matt. Thank you for that brother!
all jeeps have steering issues , not going straight on the road. why is that?
A solid front axle with pitman arm/draglink type steering is always going to perform worse than independent suspension with rack/pinion steering. Combine that with a short wheelbase, and you're almost guaranteed some jankiness... but it's a good tradeoff for the off-road capability.
@@MiketheBassMan thanks, I have not spent much time under the car yet to see what the problem(s) are
My JL is a early build and it wanders to much too. It’s a shame that something so expensive has to be re-engineered to perform as it should to start with...
$40.000.00 for a S24 sport and having the same steering issues. This is crazy. Just waiting for a recall if that ever happens.........
Dean DiPaola I hear ya.... I am going to put a adjustable track bar on mine as I have lifted it and added 37’s. Surprisingly, it didnt get any worse.
Hello i have a question for you about a 2004 jeep grand cherokee laredo with the map sensor i changed the plug and the map sensor and i am still getting a code any help with that
try posting on our club bleepinjeep fb page... you might find someone with a similar issue over there.
Excellent!
So 1 tons and 40s on the next video?
2021 2 door JL Sport Here, same shitty steering.
Great videos, thanks.
Can That fix on 2013 I have an issue like loos control sometimes think that deathbuble or someting
deathwobble is caused by worn out components, check out my video on death wobble.
Anyone has some leads to getting parts for my 1979 dj5G jeep with audi inline 4 2.0?
Ur awesome man!
You rock!
Or you can get a toyota and mod its suspention with jeep one 😂 you can do it your a mad man
What fender flares are in the thumb nail for this video?
Road armor
Thanks
As a JK guy watching this video, all I can say to people with shoddy JL steering is.... welcome to the club. lol
I had an 80 Wrangler back in my day to a 2018 JL and the steering hasnt changed much.
lol
Matt, when will you wear a half shirt like the girl on lite brite? Really makes a better Jeep channel. 🤣
Dang. You already gotta cracked windshield?
First month
How much does the kit cost?
Its a lot
Thanks. I’ll see if upgrading my track bar help before I spend a $ 1000 on a steering kit.
@@9929kingfish The problem stems from the frame side track bar bracket, not the track bar itself.
There’s a lot about the JL Jeeps I really don’t like. Most everyone I know who traded their JK for JL came away disappointed. I don’t mind putting some quality time in the garage. Fixing something that the factory screwed up on a brand new truck would aggravate the crap out of me
Shame to buy a 40k jeep then spend 5k on a decent steering setup. My 18 f150 has electric power steering and its great.
Just bought a 2023 Rubicon. They didn't fix the the issue
People are having the same issues on the gladiator
Lol
lol, I would but not sure I'm qualified... sounds like you know more about electric pumps than I... but I know nothing so...😅
@@bleepinjeep Hence, Take it apart so we both have an idea.... we both win, you get to make a video, and I get to learn something, and bonus, so do you brother... The likeliness that some fancy warranty will be factual, I can't help you there. For what it is worth, I called 2 LQK's or LKQ's (whatever?) today, to get one , which they had none and they can't keep them in stock, and are the first thing to go on those... SO, it might not be a good idea to open it, and you stand a good chance of selling it, for the loot?... or, take it apart, do a video, then sell it, LOL...
