    I actually think this is one of the better chromatic lantern decks, because it ensures that you will always have access to WUBRG by turn 4 to cast your commander or any WUBRG spell a turn early

  • @justinclement7211

    Chromatic Lantern isn't bad, it just isn't 2 mana. I know not being 2 mana is a sin to the modern EDH player (specially those who think the command zone is the EDH bible), but it is perfectly fine to play 3 mana mana rocks, specially one that fixes your mana to this extent.

    • @Digitalneo1
      @Digitalneo1 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      Chromatic Lantern should be an automatic include in any 3+ color deck. Saying otherwise is just hindering yourself.

    • @janmelantu7490
      @janmelantu7490 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Yeah, Chromatic Lantern is by far the best 3-mana rock. Even if you don’t like Commander’s Sphere because it’s slow, the fixing Lantern gives is insane. Turning all lands (including colorless utility lands) into 5-color lands is insanely good.

    i have never ever been upset to draw a lantern! even if i play full fetch and shok mana base i m still happy to use the fetches as normal lands and most important i don t have to think too much on how i spend the mana!

  • @tactiCole_
    @tactiCole_ ปีที่แล้ว +69

    I imagine most people that watch these videos are budget conscious players so I'll say this about the mana base - it is decent for a 5 color precon. Slow fetches, tapped tri lands, and a lot of the 2+ opponent untapped dual lands. I always suggest proxying lands just because they are otherworldly expensive and they go in like every deck. Normal fetch lands replace slow fetches, shock or duals go in there to probably replace the basic land conditional duals, replace the tri lands with tricycle lands that have land types. It has a really straightforward framework for ways to upgrade it, and it isn't miserable out of the box like a lot of precons tend to be (even ones with 3 or fewer colors)

    • @TheMystcast
      @TheMystcast ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I whole heartedly agree, the mana base is a lot better than most non 5 color mana bases, and they made a new card Tiller Engine to help out the etb stuff, but even then this is still good, I think slow fetches are a great way to give players fetches, and these new dual lands we see are also nice too to upgrade and have more options to fetch.

    • @geministargazer9830

      I have the deck. It works, my only complaint is that it’s a bit slow as is. Too many tapped lands and you have to be lucky to get the fixes out for the taps early enough for it to be important. Those fixes take up spaces that could be far better cards and aren’t reliable enough. Fixing the mana so you don’t have so many tapped cards and don’t need as much colour fixing would let you ramp a lot faster which is important when all the good cards are at least 5

    Wholeheartedly disagree with Josh. Mana fixing in a 5 color deck is crucial. Chromatic Lantern, Dryad of Ilysian Grove are great ways to mana fix if you don't want to upgrade lands. Tiller Engine is also great for dealing with your lands coming in tapped as well.
    I feel like Josh's argument could be sufficient for a 3 color deck but for 4+ colors, you want to make your mana as consistent as possible.

  • @KennyPGiles
    @KennyPGiles ปีที่แล้ว +68

    Massive respect to JLK, but I definitely disagree with the statement that Chromatic Lantern is a Manalith. It's one of the best mana fixing rocks out there. It taps for colour and it makes all your lands whatever you need them to be. I run it in any deck of three colour or higher and its saved my backside on more than one occasion. Just cause you have to pay that one more mana isn't a good enough reason to me to dismiss another card that can fix all your mana in a multi coloured deck.

  • @TheGibson93
    @TheGibson93 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    They said there's only the one mutate card, but there's definitely two mutate cards in the deck. Also, primeval spawn you can cheese in. Josh's vendetta against chromatic lanturn continues 😂

  • @QueerOldMagic
    @QueerOldMagic ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Druid of Elysian Grove and Chromatic Lantern are -perfect- mana fixing with super low color pips needed for fixing. As in, for a Lantern, you do t have any color requirement and for a dryad, you need one green source. There are cheaper tutors for artifacts or creatures than for generic tutor effects (see Eldamri’s Call or Moonsilver key v Demonic Tutor’s prices . . . ) either of these essentially makes all your lands the 500+ dollar dual lands, or untapped triomes, or whatever else you need. Yes, they’re potential removal targets, but … a lot of folks think like Josh and they will -not- generally be a priority to remove.
    Good use of tutors means you’ll likely be able to fetch perfect fixing regardless of the lands you have in play. Black - demonic
    Green/white - Eldamri’s call
    Blue - fabricate.
    Heck, throw in some blue spell tutors to find the tutor you need or some transmute 3 cards to also help tutor fixing.
    Either of these will be easy(ish) to tutor and immediately fix all color related mana issues. You can likely find 8+ serviceable tutor/transmute effects for less than the price of a single fetch land, and either will do way more color fixing than a fetch land.
    They’re 100% worth a 3 drop slot.

    Chromatic Lantern is great for a 5 color deck specifically one where you are trying to cast multicolor spells (one of the best cards in original Jodah) and can immediately solve the problem. However, even more so, I would like to disagree with the signets as being a good replacement... spend a few bucks on Three Visits, Farseek (already in the deck), Nature's Lore, Skyshroud Claim and a Wood Elves for a 5 color deck.
    With those pieces of ramp (over something like rampant growth or a signet) you can start by using the Kaldheim snow dual lands and the new DMU common lands, and then later the Triomes, shocks etc... to help fix your colors which provides a pretty smooth budget upscaling process for a 5 color mana base.

    If you don’t want to proxy “proper” fetches, I think you should include Fabled Passage. It’s a strictly better Evolving Wilds, as the basic it will fetch will untap if you control 4+ lands (including itself). Basically every 3+ color deck in Pioneer (where Fetchlands are banned/aren’t legal) runs it because it’s not only fixing, but drawing it late game doesn’t slow you down like an Evolving Wilds/Terramorphic Expanse. And it’s like $5 because it was printed in more than one set and really only sees play in Pioneer.

    I would say it’s a crime sisay the weatherlight captain isn’t in this deck. You can cast her a turn before you cast your commander and she immediately becomes 7/7 that can tutor for a WUBRG which you’ll have likely if you cast your commander. At that point you can either +1 your Jared to build more protection or you can -3 to take sisay to 12/12 and likely next turn if you’re on curve can WUBRG for literally any legendary card in your deck. This pairs well with Kenrith another add of mine cuz you can tutor out a haste enabler for all those cards your getting. Also for the price kyodai soul of kamigawa is fantastic. You can flash it in to protect your commander then just pump it to protect kyodai. It’s a cheap flyer that can also buff itself for a WUBRG so it gets stupid big really quickly.

I have a 5 color dragon deck with perfect mana fixing and I’m almost never happy to see a signet but always happy to see the lantern.

    I just happened upon this channel the last week and saw this video drop and was stoked because I bought this precon and wanted some upgrades. So can anyone tell me why Josh does not like Chromatic Lantern? Like I’m not super competitive, but I’m not dumb when it comes to MtG either, but that seems super powerful in THIS deck specifically. Am I missing something?

    • @ProphecyPhrase
      @ProphecyPhrase ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No you hit the nail on the head. If you are running a 5 colour deck and you can afford it, you MUST play Lantern. Heck I would run it in 3-4 colour decks as it can help fix your mana. Yes it's not a 2 cost mana rock but the benefits it grants you is incredible. Heck I run a 5 colour Dragon Tribal Deck and I don't own a Lantern as I can't afford it. If I had it 100% I would be running that card in that deck.
      I don't know why Josh hates the card so much I personally think it's from a biased perspective but I'm not 100% sure.
      Long story short if you have the money and can afford a copy of Lantern, put a copy in the deck you will regret nothing.

  • @Gshadewolf14
    @Gshadewolf14 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think calling Chromatic Lantern bad is nuts. Especially comparing it to signets, which only give you two colors (not always the ones you need), I would much rather pay an extra one to get any color, and then turn all of my lands into command towers. That one extra mana is an insignificant loss of tempo for what it gives you, especially in a deck that is very color intensive and doesn’t really do anything until you have 5 mana (which need to be each color). In this deck, there are few things you can be playing on turn 3 that are as impactful and helpful to your strategy as chromatic lantern, I almost want to say this is a must-have unless you have a completely optimized land base, which most people (especially people who would be buying a precon) can’t afford. Long story short tho, I was baffled when Josh said Lantern was bad.

    I highly suggest using Ramos as the commander and putting Jared into the 99. They said be happy with your one instance of double wuberg, but if he’s your commander, you can get more. I’ve used his double wuberg ability three times in a single game. Spread out over two and a half hours, mind you, but it’s far more explosive than Jared.

    • @freakfreak12345

    Five colors are such a baffling thing to me. All of magic at your fingertips and the choice paralysis becomes real.
    Pre-Vid: I want to see what I can do with an all colors matter deck. Maybe a Ramos and a Door to Nothingness seem viable. Definitely a Conflux. Some Charms and Niv-Mizzet Reborn too. Maybe take advantage of ETB so Rune of the Hidden Realm. And when all else fails, Child of Alara.
    Post -Vid: Once again I see the hate for Chromatic Lantern and I say, Run it if you have it lying around. If you're putting in Ramos, I don't see anything wrong with having him just be the commander instead.

    I'll just throw Dragon Archway in here :) amazing card for this deck! Can even trigger the second ability of the Spawn which costs 10, for only 2 mana. Because archway brings him in, he was not cast and gets instantly exiled!

    • @PiquantPan
      @PiquantPan ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that is not how the ETB triggered ability of Spawn works. it’s a replacement effect, so if it enters without being cast or being paid for, it is exiled INSTEAD of ETB’ing - therefore, you do NOT get the leaves trigger when you cheat the Primeval, it goes straight to exile

You can not like a card, that's fine. I'm sure Josh plays a ton of cards that I don't personally enjoy. What I'm not going to do is sit around and tell him that his cards suck when they don't.
