Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

  • Dec. 8, 2017 | Bob Boilen -- Put your love of perfection outside the office door and come in for some office fun. This collaboration between Philadelphia's Kurt Vile and Melbourne's Courtney Barnett is more about newfound friends poking jabs, goofing around and having fun with words than reaching any new musical heights. It's a much welcome injection of humor in the world of rock music and if you've heard their collaborative album Lotta Sea Lice, you'll find this Tiny Desk performance musically even more casual. It's akin to hearing friends play after a few afternoon beers, which is kind of what happened. (We actually had to page folks in the building hoping for some brew and were quite surprised at what the NPR staff had stashed in the fridge.)
The two singers/songwriters/guitarists have been mutual admirers and kept bumping into one another at various festivals. They find mutual love for twang and so their songs lean country, though their respective countries are hemispheres apart.
Kurt and Courtney tend to bring out the adolescence in one another, inspiring Kurt to pick out a song he wrote when he was roughly fourteen called "Blue Cheese" about, well, I'm not sure. But lines like, "I didn't mean to cough on her/Forgot to add the fabric softener," just make me laugh; and in 2017, in a deeply serious political landscape, I find that quite refreshing.
    Set List
    "Over Everything"
    "Continental Breakfast"
    "Blue Cheese"
    "Let It Go"
    MUSICIANS
    Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile
    CREDITS
Producers: Bob Boilen, Morgan Noelle Smith; Creative Director: Bob Boilen; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographers: Morgan Noelle Smith, Alyse Young; Production Assistant: Salvatore Maicki; Photo: Jennifer Kerrigan/NPR

This is so human I love it, they're just playing music having a good time, and even if they make a little mistake they just laugh. I really think the human element is lacking in music today. This is a breath of fresh air.

I’ve lived in Indonesia for about a year or so. There wasn’t a day on which I wouldn’t put my headphones on, hop on my motorbike and just roam towards nowhere listening to Kurt. The scenic route together with Kurt’s voice and lyricism painted some of the most vivid memories I’m happy to have.

    • @smlpcollective4166
      @smlpcollective4166 6 ปีที่แล้ว +50

This is a very important aspect that is very much overlooked. Starting musicians, especially kids, think that mistakes should be avoided - you need to stick to the sheet. The more you start discovering yourself as an artist, you realise that mistakes are beautiful... they take you to places you never thought existed. Mistakes must be embraced, they must be welcomed, forgiven, and accepted. I know there is a video of Yo yo ma (cellist) somewhere on youtube where he welcomes, acknowledges the first mistake he makes in a concert - and then continues playing. That's great philosophy for life right there!

When songs from their collaborative album first started playing on the radio, I turned on my car and heard Kurt singing. My first thought was, "Holy cow! A male Courtney Barnett!" and then she started singing.... I thought it could not make more sense for them to do a duet/collaboration; it's like they were made for each other.

I have the impression this is what two musically talented kids growing up on a desert island would produce on their own music without the influence of classical/traditional musical training: chords, harmonies, rhythm patterns, you name it. There is not a single second of predictability in this and their talent still shines through every single beat. Love it!

I think what appeals to most that like Kurt and Courtney is that they are very human. For whatever reasons not one of Kurt's better days but there are times he is just on fire. He seems to overcome a lot to perform live. Yet he never says he is uncomfortable.
I first saw Courtney on Austin City Limits, she just took the place over. She is a breath of fresh air. She seems almost like Kurt's big sister here. If you are looking for perfection I would suggest robotic electronic music that is programmed so that there is no deviation from the written music or symphonic music, where if there is a flaw it is covered by others. If you find that stimulating more power to you.

It reminds me of a couple folk seeing some guitars & saying I use to play a lil back when, & then having at it. It's a Neil Young kinda vibe. He prefered fresh, flaws & all over rehearsed.

I'd really love to spin the camera around to see the crowd and also what the office actually look like

If u just wanna see the office regardless of who is playing then check out Taylor swift or Lizzo, both shows pan the camera around.

I first saw Kurt playing before the flaming lips about 7 years ago. He was so drunk you couldn't understand a word he was singing. He though Portland, ME was Boston. The guy killed it on guitar anyway, and here I am 7 years later still following along haha

I saw him also in Paris for his "Wakin on a pretty daze" album tour. I remember I was really disappointed because his singing was really awful! lol Still, I think he has made a lot of progress lately vocally. But no debate that he has always had a very impressive guitar style!
