IMHO This is a grand lighting setup for 2015, but still would look fantastic today in 2022. The main things are that you have a good quantity of fixtures to cover the massive dance floor *and* that you are properly controlling the lights with lots of preprogrammed looks and sequences that you will be syncing to the music. That is what makes the show look awesome and really gets the audience engaged in the meta mind groove. For the big sound system needed for a gym, techniques and tools haven't really evolved as much in that area, so this setup is still relevant and superb for 2022. Good work!
good on you guys for using danley sound labs in new Zealand where im based i use the sh46 and sh tops and th118 subs they are a best glad to see other people using this great brand of speakers
gmangigson I think the TH118 would win by a hair. I like the TH118 because it's pretty much as loud as 99% of dual 18's and takes half the power than the others
+Daniel Graves Exactly. Gets real fun when you start to factor in the response flattening that's inherent of horn loaded enclosures (tapped horn of course with the TH118).
Finally back haha been waiting for a while. Have you guys ever considered investing in a passive sound system? I looked into an active system before, but I decided against it. Now I run 2 JBL MRX515's for tops and 2 JBL MRX518S's for the bottom. It's all powered by 2 Crown XTi2000's and a DBX Driverack runs as a crossover. I can fill up a gym fairly well, although bass lacks a little bit. Anyways awesome setup! 2 Intimidator 355z's run great for me. Just one question for Doug now, how do you get the shutter to open so quickly? I have it setup to instant and I feel as if the light fades in but it's barely noticeable, just bugs me a bit.
+DJMatt The whole system here is passive except for the one front fill. I'm not sure how or why your shutter is opening slowly, that's really weird. I would need to see it in person or something to fix it
+DJMatt well first of all, you really only need to do one of those things. second, there shouldn't be any kind of delay when turning backout off regardless
Nice vid, but one question. Where's the full review of the EV ETX18SP? I am really looking into buying one and would like to see yalls full review of the sub that yall mentioned in the first look video.
+Aubry Scully It's comin! It's in the works, but if you'd like the short answer, don't buy an ETX18SP. The video will go into extreme detail about the sub, but if all you need is one reason not to get it, then that's because it's unreliable and EV's warranty sucks.
Aubry Scully KW181 is fine, although if you can lug something around as big as the Danley TH118, I'd go with that. Should be about as loud as around four 18SP's, and including an amp for it it costs about as much as two 18SP's. Hide one of those underneath a table and you've got plenty of bass for a 600+ person prom.
+3-bit gamer in our area, it's super easy to rent subs but nobody has any loud tops besides line arrays which we don't want to use. we needed to own a pair of loud speakers, and now we do. the one danley sm80 is about equal in volume compared to 4 - 6 EV ETX35Ps. we had the danleys running at quarter power at this event and I felt that it ended up a bit too loud actually. alex might see this comment and say some other things
+LenkaTim the scenes used here would only work on 350s in this configuration, but i wouldn't do that anyway because i don't want to give away my showxpress programming tricks
I was wandering if someone like me (beginning DJ) should buy some trusses like the ones used in this video. I am planning to get about 20 rgb lights soon and i wanted to know if something like the trusses used in this video would be practical.
+Hey Its Jack If by crackling you mean distortion, there's a lot of that in the video because of the bass distorting the camera microphone. So yes, in person there was none of that distortion. The distortion just serves to give you an idea of how loud it was.
+charley c Thanks! But really dude? You can clearly see in the video that 4 subs were used, and the description has a gear list that details all the gear we used and how much of each piece of gear we used. Next time try checking there first!
+Dj Mikey T A bit touchy? More like a bit flabbergasted that he couldn't count the subs himself, lol. I was also just letting him know that we always have a gear list in the description so that he doesn't need to comment and wait for a response, he can just go to the description to find out what gear we used.
+A.E.L. Sound & Lighting Canon 60D with the kit lens. Although, this isn't the stock look the 60D puts out. I put a decent bit of time into trying to get the best look out of it.
great setup! I have a few questions: 1.) It looks you own the Chauvet Slimpar 38's. (24) Why did you choose the 38's over the 56's or 64's? 2.) How did you find a place that leases this equipment? It doesn't seem like I have that in my area. 3.) Are the subs active or passive? Thanks! -Andrew
+Andrew Cox Thanks! We have an equipment list that details which equipment we own and which we rented. We bought the Slimpar 38's simply because they're cheaper than the 56's or 64's, which allowed us to buy more of them. We found a place that rents out this equipment just by researching rental houses in our area and through word of mouth from people we know. The subs are passive, powered by a Powersoft K10 amplifier, as listed in the description.
Do you think its possible to run a passive sub from a Mackie Thump15 powered speaker if it puts out 1000w? Thanks for the response! You guys are doing a great job, I look forward to more videos.
+Andrew Cox Sure it's possible, but not recommended at all. You'd need to take apart the Mackie Thump, and run a cable from the LF amp leads (since the box is bi-amped) on the inside of the box to the sub. Not to mention that that amp module is probably processed specifically for the Mackie Thump LF driver, and not a sub. Also the amp probably wouldn't like driving a sub at all, especially if the sub is a lower impedance than what the amp module was seeing from the Thump LF driver. And the Mackie Thump puts out more like 250 watts continuous, 500 program and 1000 peak. The spec sheet lists RMS and peak, but RMS has nothing to do with power ratings for a speaker. So I'm just gonna assume peak means peak and "RMS" means program.
Well a lot of this stuff we rented (there's an equipment list in the description with the equipment that we rented marked as such), and the rest we bought with money we earned from doing other gigs.
Small question: How do you guys run your mic/s? Obviously you are using loud monitors so I would assume you have the mics running into your qsc touchmix mixer thing, that way you can send the mic through the mains but not the monitors (that way it doesnt make terrible feedback). I don't have a separate mixing console to do that with... I have my pioneer ddj-sx controller, with a xlr mic input on the 4th channel. If I want to run monitors off of my second master, is there any way to not have the mic go to the monitors? I suppose that I could connect the monitors to the booth output, but I think the mic would still go through the booth out.
what do you do for all the equipment? is it owned or do you rent it out or does the school supply? id like to do this for my prom so if someone could let me know
schools 99% of the time supply nothing, you can see a breakdown of what we owned vs what we rented for this gig in the video description. however, this event was 3 years ago, so we own almost everything we rented for this now
Doug if you want to see what you will look like when your older search "John Young of the Disc Jockey News". The guy looks like a exact older version of you! wtf!

good on you guys for using danley sound labs in new Zealand where im based i use the sh46 and sh tops and th118 subs they are a best glad to see other people using this great brand of speakers
+logan walker (AVKIWI) Danley stuff is the best! Nobody beats them in terms of output per size and price to performance.
+Alex Berry i used 4 th118 subs on a job we wore shacking the bulding and could hear the bass 100m away
SLM is love. SLM is life.
Check all that gear! Good video
you guys are awesome
Now just need a couple TH118's to wrap up the whole package ;D Great work guys.
+gmangigson Good choice of sub ;)
They put up a pretty good fight to the XYONs on paper, especially in the weight department. Would be interesting to compare the two.
gmangigson I think the TH118 would win by a hair. I like the TH118 because it's pretty much as loud as 99% of dual 18's and takes half the power than the others

Nice video guys
Sounds good.

+Nic Pagan For blackout I set the shutter all the way down and the dimmer all the way down

+Alex Berry Woah, thats not what I was expecting at all. Good alternative that you can recommend? QSC KW181?
Aubry Scully KW181 is fine, although if you can lug something around as big as the Danley TH118, I'd go with that. I am forthing out on how good this is! Rate it hardcore :)
setup is fire
you guys got the new speakers for and had somethin else
+Victor Ibarra wut
+Doug Berry i think he means why did you get more speakers?
+3-bit gamer in our area, it's super easy to rent subs but nobody has any loud tops besides line arrays which we don't want to use. we needed to own a pair of loud speakers, and now we do. the one danley sm80 is about equal in volume compared to 4 - 6 EV ETX35Ps. we had the danleys running at quarter power at this event and I felt that it ended up a bit too loud actually.

ok thanks
Can you hand out some presets for your ShowXpress Moving Scenes?
+LenkaTim the scenes used here would only work on 350s in this configuration, but i wouldn't do that anyway because i don't want to give away my showxpress programming tricks
+Doug Berry Haha, sure I understand that.
I was wandering if someone like me (beginning DJ) should buy some trusses like the ones used in this video. I am planning to get about 20 rgb lights soon and i wanted to know if something like the trusses used in this video would be practical.
can you guys show us how to use the ipad to monitor the sound levels and how to use the apc mini and xpress 512
does the sound sound better there as its crackling in the video ?
+Hey Its Jack If by crackling you mean distortion, there's a lot of that in the video because of the bass distorting the camera microphone. So yes, in person there was none of that distortion. The distortion just serves to give you an idea of how loud it was.
thank god. needed some slm in my life
very nice set up
what subs are you using and how many ?

Wow a bit touchy. It was just a simple question from some of your fans. Deep breath...aaaaaah
+Dj Mikey T A bit touchy? More like a bit flabbergasted that he couldn't count the subs himself, lol. Hey Doug what do you think of the new Chauvet intimidator spot 455z IRC. Thanks!
What do you guys use to record your videos?
+A.E.L. Sound & Lighting Canon 60D with the kit lens. Although, this isn't the stock look the 60D puts out. I put a decent bit of time into trying to get the best look out of it.

Which song is playing on 6:26?
+TheGamesBond-007 Haywyre - Everchanging
+Doug Berry Thanks! Unlike many other youtubers, you guys do react to comments. Keep up the good work!
This would look a lot better with a backdrop curtain behind the setup. Piece of advice for next time.
Can I ask how you guys got the money for all this equipment? I need to know
Well a lot of this stuff we rented (there's an equipment list in the description with the equipment that we rented marked as such), and the rest we bought with money we earned from doing other gigs.
Hey I was wonder what software you use to control your lights?
