UNRESOLVED: Corlys and Rhaenys supporting Rhaenyra

  • One aspect of season 1 of House of the Dragon that puzzled many viewers was the rapid shift in Corlys and Rhaenys’s support for Rhaenyra. Despite her numerous slights against them-having an affair with Ser Harwyn Strong, bearing illegitimate children not fathered by Laenor, and being implicated in Laenor’s murder (at least from the perspective of Corlys and Rhaenys)-they seem to forgive and support her without much hesitation. These significant betrayals should have been difficult for Corlys and Rhaenys to overlook, and yet they do. What’s worse is that the show provides weak justifications for their decision, making it feel rushed and unresolved. Therefore, in this video, I explore this perplexing plot development, delving a little deeper into it.

It is so hard to understand how a proud self-made powerfull lord like Corlys would be so "ok" with Rhaenyra's clear bastards carrying the Velaryon name. And the suposed "heir" to Driftmark, Lucerys, not knowing shit about how to sail.

Yet another reason why making the Velaryons dark-skinned and Rhaenys silver-haired were truly bad changes from book to show when put together. At least in the book there is plausible reason for them to believe the boys are their grandchildren. In the show they both know that they aren't, so this was not well-thought out if we are meant to respect their intelligence, when the motive for supporting Rhaenyra despite what I've written and you've mentioned are properly fleshed out..

    • @thecriticalmaester9702

Yeah, I agree. In the books, there's still plausible deniability. Which would make a line like, "History doesn't remember blood, it remembers names" make a lot more sense in that context. The book is an in-universe history book written by "unreliable sources," according to the book itself. Since it's written in third person, the maesters (and mushroom) wouldn't have been privy to private conversations that they weren't there for....so they either don't speak to it....or they make up what they want.
Corly and Rhaenys know that Jace, Luc, and Joffrey aren't their grandchildren, yes. But Baela and Rhaena ARE. Daemon is there father, they seem to have much love and respect for Rhaenyra, AND they are (were) betrothed to Jace and Luc, so of course they'll side with the Blacks. That leaves Corlys and Rhaenys no other option but to side with the Blacks. I also think they side with Rhaenyra because they know that Viserys did NOT change his mind about her being his heir and House Velaryon swore fealty to her. House Velaryon's word stands.

Chances are Corlys and Rhaenys knew their son was gay and a quitter - and were therefore glad they were not exposed, but somewhat covered by Rhaenyra passing her bastards of as their lineage.
Chances are Vaemond eagerly smearing Rhaenyra and her children and exposing this plot was bad for Corlys and Rhaenys as well. So Daemon beheading him benefitted them. It's not like Vaemond tried to defend Corlys or Laenor's honour with his accusations. The opposite - he exposed him as dumb, a weakling or impotent at best. Furthering himself to replace Laenor.
Chances are Rhaenys is bitter that she wasn't allowed to be Queen back in the day. Having even Daemon against her. Being put down because of your gender is something women Connect over. This time the Greens steal her niece's Throne for the same reason. But this time Daemon is on their side... she might feel empowered through this. It might be Corlys doesn't Enjoy seeing his wife had been put down and feels with her.
Chances are the Greens will kill Off all that stood against them on Team black. There go their grandchildren their daughter Laenna has with Daemon. Who is Team black, and the rivaling queen's consort. Favouring your grandchildren's survival is a Non brainer. I mean...the chances for Team black against Team green are 50/50. Even if Greens win - They would lose. So They can just tip it to secure their grandchildren at least in Case of a win for their side of the war. They have the Mighty ships after all... to Tip their side for the win.
Chances are they believed Rhaenyra that their son's alledged murder wasn't her fault. Even though they still were upset enough at his Funeral to accuse her. Even if not...what's done is done. Laenor is already lost. All that is still left is to protect their grandkids.
I have Not watched the show or read the Books yet. But watched a lot off those Fan vids. I Hope i am well informed enough to give my 2 cents ;).

FACTS! Only Vaemond acted sane. Corlys and Rhaenys already had their granddaughters taken as political hostages in a way by Rhaenyra and Daemon should they defy them. Writers could've used their concern for their granddaughters' safety as a reason for Rhaenys and Corlys supporting Rhaenyra grudgingly. Instead, they just go "Oh, we know they killed our son, emotionally destroyed our daughter and passed off bastards as Velaryon heirs....but isn't it AWESOME that Rhaenyra is a woman that doesn't want war unlike MEN??" Totally agree with you. I didn't like that Rhaenys simply accepted Rhaenyra as her queen just because she's an "awesome feminist boss queen". I think she should've sided with her grudgingly out of fear for her grandchildren, especially since that was Rhaenyra and Daemon's plan to begin with. The whole point of Laenor secretly leaving for Essos was to fool people into thinking that Rhaenyra was ruthless and strong. So it would've made sense for Rhaenyra to adopt a more strong-arm approach towards Corlys and Rhaenys in order to fix them by her side.

Daemon married a velaryon and was for once faithfull to her. Daemon had children with the velaryon. So if you follow the logic and raenys does not beleive in a female ruler. They are supporters of daemon rather than daenyra. In regards to having children with Laenor, I believe the best solution would have been to have Laenor’s cousin bed Rhaenyra that way the children look legit, will have Valeryon blood, and the uncle that calls Rhaenyra kids out would be satisfied since his blood would be on the throne and that way he wouldn’t accuse them of being bastards.

I think the reason Rhaenys and Corlys joined Rhaenyra is because they wanted to protect their granddaughters. I think Daemon always knew that and that’s why he and Rhaenyra married as soon as Laenor was “dead” so that Baela and Rhaena are essentially hostages under Rhaenyra, eventually forcing Rhaenys to choose her family. When Rhaenyra offered to marry Baela and Rhaena to Jace and Luke, it wasn’t an offer - it was a threat - that she could do whatever she wanted to her grand daughters even marry them to bastards and ruin their lives. Corlys on the other hand always liked Daemon. Once Rhaenys convinced him that they had no choice but to side with Rhaenyra, he didn’t need much convincing to ally with her.

When people will realise that all these "incoherences" only happen because of the changes made by the showrunners. If your make a timeline with every single character with what were they doing and where they were, you will see that the Velaryons and Daemon share 14 years long standing stay within their domains and in their home.
Laenor dying does not serve Rhaenyra nor Daemon. Laenor is a seasoned dragonrider who has known Seasmoke from a very young age, his dead is the loss of a very powerful dragonrider for the wars to come. Also Daemon and Rhaenyra did not sleep in Laena's funeral, the reason why is because of Aegon. Aegon III is born in the last month of 120 AC and Laena died at the early days of the 1st month of that year. That means that at the very least there is a 3 month gap. In which Daemon had been living with Corlys, Rhaenys, Baela and Rhaena since he moved on to Hightide with Laena in the year 117 AC. Daemon is said to have gone to Driftmark in 105 AC after the death of his child with Mysaria, however it would be a whole 1 year before the War of the Stepstones were to commence. That means Daemon had been living with the Velaryons since then and only stopped when he eloped with Laena.
Now adding this details to the picture, Laenor dying severed the direct tie Rhaenyra had with the Velaryons despite Corlys having accepted her kids while Laenor lived. Daemon marrying Rhaenyra gives her a direct tie to the Velaryons with Baela and Rhaena in the book sharing blood ties with them and their betrothal, not to forget that since 105 AC Daemon had not lived in Dragonstone or in King's Landing but coming and going and residing with his goodparents.
That's why in the books the quote during the Dance is revealing:
"When her husband Prince Daemon fell, House Velaryon turned against her." -The World of Ice and Fire
That's only a part of the Velaryon's reasoning. There is also need to add, that when the Triarchy assaulted his lands and ships and also the coasts of the the Stormlands and Crownlands, none of the lords nor the crown moved a finger so much, that Corlys had to ally with his former enemy Daemon Targaryen. Both had almost gone to war during Rhaenys vs Viserys dilemma.
If you can't comprehend how or why Corlys and Rhaenys would support Rhaenyra, then you surely did not understand how then Corlys allied himself with the spearhead of Viserys crowning and later he himself knelt and crown him his King in 109AC. For 2 long ass years House Velaryon allegiance had been with Daemon, making their faction the most powerful by counting Caraxes, Meleys, Seasmoke and Vhagar, while Viserys family barely counted with Syrax.
Adding to this situation comes the next quote:
" Prince Daemon [...] neither the GREENS nor the BLACKS had a place for him... *but House Velaryon* was powerful enough *to defy* both parties *with impunity* "

  • @Bethany38326
    @Bethany38326 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Also, I think the fact that Laena died alone via dragonfire should be at the very least suspicious to the Velaryons. Isnt it basically an open secret that Daemon may have killed his first wife? What are the odds ANOTHER just so happens to die with zero witnesses and burned to death? That on its own you may be able to reconcile but the fact he then immediately marries the woman you already think actually killed your son should immediately cast doubt on him as well. This never being mentioned drives me up a wall. I legitimately dont understand why Rhaenyra has so many supporters both in and out of the show. (for any reasons other than omg slay girlboss)

Yeah people just gloss over Laena's death. Her dying alone on the other side of the ocean with a man who has killed his wife before and doesn't have a good reputation even outside of death doesn't raise any questions especially when he immediately marries another woman at her funeral.

Corlys is not bashed the same way Otto is for being willing to sell his kid daughter younger than Alicent to Viserys. He is also ambitious and self serving just like Otto and yet they all love him!
Rhaenys and Corlys support a bastard to take Driftmark regardless of the fact Laenor acknowledged him. It should go to Vaemond being the next legitimate male Velaryon or to Rhaena or Baela. Overlooking their own granddaughters.
They support the two people Daemon and Rhaenyra who are responsible for them losing their son and are fine with them marrying less than a month after the death of Daemon’s wife their daughter!!
Rhaenys crushes and kills countless commoners when she burst into the sept!

You make a very VERY valid point here in that Princess Rhaenyra should have met with her good parents and her father and with Ser Laenor confess that despite their most valiant efforts . . . Laenor was sterile. Could an alternative option be exercised for the the Targaryen - Velaryon offspring of this marital union?!? Perhaps a Velaryon surrogate father could be incorporated to do the deed like one of Laenor's cousins who didn't have the physical limitations that Laenor had but still possess the Valyrian blood traits of Purple eyes Aquiline nose and Platinum hair that House Velaryon did!?!? No just shy black man of course but a full-blooded and true born Velaryon like Daemon Velaryon who I believe we met in episode five as he accompanied Lady Laena to receive the entourage of👑 Viserys as it arrives at High Tide.

I think a major point is being missed here, the Hightower's should never had meddled with the throne especially when the reigning power are mad, dragon wielding psychopaths'. Just by studying their history, Otto should never have pushed his daughter to marry a man as indecisive as Viserys with a an insane brother like Daemon.

One of the biggest "wtf" moments for me from the 1st season. Logically it just made no sense for them to support Rhaenyra. My only explanation is that Rhaenys just wants to live vicariously through a woman. She doesn't care if it's Rhaenyra or Alicent just any woman will do

  • @frijofroisdeern3783

Id like to believe they only support the blacks because of their granddaughters, and maybe their 'grandsons' too, even though theyre bastards considering corlys seems to have somecare for the boys, despite knowing they arent of hisblood. We know they love rhaena and baela dearly though, and with all 5 of these children being team black themselves and under rhaenyra and daemon they might feel obligated to join rhaenyras cause for them

  • @9xprincess
    @9xprincess 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

The show messed itself up with having Rhaenyra's children be so clearly bastards. Firstly IRL terms the Velaryon children and grandchildren should be way less (universally) black-passing then they are presented as in the show; especially Rhaena and Baela whose mother is merely biracial and father is white. Secondly the show should have kept Rhaenys having more Baratheon features, even casting Jocelyn Baratheon, and emphasizing the Baratheon connection. The boys could still have somewhat of a familiar resemblance to the Strongs but this gives Rhaenyra plausible deny ability. Corlys, Rheanys, Baelea/Rhaena and many others could truly believe Rhaenyra's sons are Laenor's. So as the civil war begins despite suspicions, Rhaenyra can convince Rhaenys she did not kill Laenor and ultimately Corlys sides with her out of love and protection for his grandsons.

She has to support them because she already made a pact saying her granddaughters were going to marry Rhaenyras’ sons. There is a deleted scene where Rhaenys is telling Baela that she wants her and Rhaena to come with Rhaenys and Corlys so they stay can stay out of the war but then Baela says no and that they should stay and help Rhaenyra and Daemon. I feel like they should’ve kept that scene because it would’ve added a more insight into who Baela is.

My point was: since they've already change certain elements of the books, such as making the Velaryons black, then they could've also changed Rhaenyra's love interest and made him a black man. There are black characters in the world of ASOIAF, so it wouldn't have been blackwashing to create an original black character that Rhaenyra fell for and had children with.

  • @seth_fitzgerald

I’m gonna say this, I support Team Black through and through. I do not support Team Green, but I do not condone the wrongdoings that Rhaenyra herself has committed. Sleeping with Criston Cole and turning him into an enemy, sleeping with Harwin was the stupidest decision she ever made and neglecting her responsibilities.
I cannot fully put the blame on the characters because it’s not their fault for the way season one turned out season one was great, but the problem is that they adapted so much from the book that part of it doesn’t make sense and part of it doesn’t even add up with their counterpart, they have done this in the original Game of Thrones and I know for a fact they are going to continue this for the next three seasons.
The issue with the Velaryons is that their book counterparts are white, but they wanna use black characters to insult the intelligence of the audience by making Rhaenyra’s three sons look way different from Laenor. I really don’t get it. In the books, her three sons can claim dragons. They don’t have the silver hair or the purple eyes and they don’t have Valyrians features, but it was difficult for anybody to protest their legitimacy due to Laenor being a white male. They really expected us to be blind to what they were really trying to do by saying everything that happens on the show is different from the way it happened in the books?

The fact that the boys came out white isn't really that far fetch. Laenor himself is only half black (his mother is a Targaryen Princess) What make is obvious was their dark hair. Show Rhaenys doesnt have Baratheon hair like in the books.
