This was very helpful. I’ve been working on this realization of when it’s happening for a couple of years now and it does get easier. Noticing it happening gets easier but especially your life gets easier because you don’t feel shamed or guilty for things that you can’t control.

Personalization is an important concept which you explain very well. Your examples and experiences are always helpful and they shine in this video. Questioning is essential, even when it means questioning yourself. I do not like being questioned by anyone-occupational hazard! I am easily slighted. But I love feeling that I am not the star of everyone’s movie. Phew. I try very hard with people but even with perspective, some people are just not good for me to have in my life. I will still try and I will have perspective but I will use wisdom to let go of people who are not healthy for my psyche. Yes, don’t take things personally but it doesn’t mean I have to accept being a doormat. (Issues with self worth ? Probably 😊)

Oh my you have taped into my life At this time in my life. I'm 83 and dealing with a situation I have no control over. But feeling as though all of this stemmed around me. I'm working really hard on letting it go. Its the hardest thing that has happened in my life. I've cried a thousand tears.

This great advice to not personalize someone else's personalization. What I would love to know is how a non-therapist can best handle it when you are on the receiving end of someone else's personalization when the person demands an admission of guilt from you and is accusing you of refusing to be accountable for your actions.

What about when a person is always looking for something negative and personal in conversations with others? And then perceives that you are being negative towards them?
