@@Gatorade69 I was going to include Tomba 1 or 2 (both great) but thought they were kind of popular in their day, though now pretty forgotten. HoD is quite good, the first part where you are being attacked by a bunch of shadow monsters is honestly the hardest part imo and makes for a really bad impression.
Straight up. My homie and I used to go crazy on the Vs. And I loved the strategy mode as well. Most definitely a hidden gem if there was one. I never hear this mentioned and I never meet others who have played it been heard of it.
The Unholy War is one of my favorite games ever. I don't understand why that subgenre is so small. The balance of all the different units and their different abilities is incredible.
@@beelzeboss42 Really? You mean in your hands he's disproportionately powerful? I never got that good with him. I miss a lot with the kamikaze attack and I never seem to do as well as I expect dropping bombs on the Hard ai, unless it's a slow unit.
@@rsavage-r2v A friend of mine used to absolutely destroy me if he was using Killcycle. On the flip side I would tear through his entire team with Prana. If I was using the other side I'd favour Razorfane, but at the time I was pretty okay with most characters to some extent. It was interesting how some were better against certain other characters. Made the game more than just a standard fighting game. I'd love to see it redone, or a sequel with new hardware.
My hidden gem recommendation would be Tokyo Highway Battle. It's a pretty fun arcade racer with a decent selection of upgradable cars, a banging soundtrack and impressive graphics for the time.
Gotta admit I didn't know any of those games and yet watching this list felt strangely familiar. In my almost 40 years of gaming I've never experienced such a generation as the era of the original PlayStation where so many whacky and creative concepts made it into actually functional and playable games. I myself played countless games that most likely nobody heard about and love them so much. As much as I still enjoy playing modern games, that past era is definitely something very special to me.
I actually haven't played any of these games... but I see something named "Slap Happy Rhyth, Busters"; and I can't NOT be gripped by an overwhelming desire to play.
Unholy War, was that the one that had the add with a blue'ish creature on it that look like a cross between a Zergling from StarCraft and Violator from Spawn? I think that's what it looked like anyways, it's been many years since i've actually seen it. Another really fun game that i don't see mentioned for PS1 is Silent Bomber, the gameplay of dashing around setting or stacking then exploding bombs as fast as your fingers can tap was soo addicting. For me it's one of those games that you just never understand why something else similar hasn't been made again.
Your videos genuinely make me feel deep levels of nostalgia and happiness! I always look forward to your new uploads. Sincerely thank you very much for your content! ♡
mentioning Incredible Crisis and not mentioning the AMAZING soundtrack by Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra? This will not stand, for penance go listen to a couple TSPO albums, they're all fantastic. The Unholy War is definitely a great game. If you want more in that vein, the Archon games are an early version of it, on all old computer systems and the NES. The second never got an NES port, but the first was remade on the PC in 1994 and well worth checking out. Around the same time was Dark Legions on the PC, developed by Silicon Knights. I loved the whole "chess, but you actually have to fight" angle of those games, and wish they'd do an update to the concept.
I absolutely loved Kurushi! I only had the one level to play because it was on a demo disk compilation that I got free with something. I used to play it over and over again. I was tempted to buy a Playstation mini because it was on there as IQ. I decided just to stick with my Switch and the dozens of games that I haven't got round to playing yet or completed. Seriously, I've had Breath of the wild for about 6 years and I've barely played it because I'm waiting till I've got nothing left in my back catalogue of games to play before I invest every single waking second of my time into it.
Awesome video, Team Triple Jump. Here are some of my favorite PS1 hidden gems that aren't in this video: Ghost in the Shell, Gekido: Urban Fighters, Heart of Darkness, 40 Winks, Rising Zan: The Samurai Gunman, Galerians, One, Omega Boost, Wild 9, Project Overkill, Machine Hunter, Pinobee, N20 Nitrous Oxide, Swagman, Eternal Eyes, and Starfighter Sanvein. Ok, I need to stop! Haha
Trap gunner reminds me of Tecmo's: Deception series. I found Pandemonium quite niche as well. Thankfully I was lucky enough to play incredible crisis back when it came out
I never knew Toys for Bob developed The Unholy War, it just says Crystal Dynamics and published by Eidos. Such a great game, mixing strategy with fighting. The fighting even had strategy in the sense each unit was strongest vs a specific unit and weak to another. Also the arenas each had advantages and disadvantages for different units. I would love a remake or a sequel, but doubt that will happen ever. Just glad I have my copy still.
I still hope we get a sequel or prequel (even though prequel wouldn't make much sense) or at least bringing it as hd remaster on all consoles and pc While I'm writing this has avatar not the same story?
Yes, got Unholy War recommended last Year, it is a very cool Game, the Archon of the PSX Era. Sadly it is way too expansive to buy a Copy, so get it everywhere you can.
Jersey Devil isn't a game I've ever finished, even when I had a full copy for a short while as a kid, but it is a game that has always piqued my curiosity. I hope to one day play it through in its entirety. It doesn't stand up even close to something like Spyro, but it has a very neat aesthetic and is a decent game in its own right.
Yoooo, the unholy war! Recently played it for a video and thought I thought it wasn't fully fleshed out, I really hoped it could get a sequel! Multiplayer must be great on it!
Been playing intelligent since launch. It was on the sampler disk that came with my system. I scoured every store and pawnshops for a few years before I found a complete copy. I still play it today.
One game that I would consider to be a PS1 hidden gem is "Galaga: Destination Earth". Featuring not just the classic top down camera angle, but also two additional camera modes. There are unique environments, tactics, bonus stages, power ups and even objectives to complete as you fly through each level. The music is also beautifully crafted as a spacy, techno, and even orchestral pieces that make the campaign worth it. (Even cutscenes featuring our ship) In my opinion, it is the perfect spin-off of that arcade title.
to me it was Dragon Seeds. It was a game I once played on my older cousin's PS1. I made a cool pink dragon, my younger cousin whined that she got the crustacean one that looked a bit like a beyblade, lol. something about it instantly tucked itself into my memory.
Although it had control and camera issues; I think Nightmare Creatures is one of PSOne’s most underrated classics! The atmosphere is just as suspenseful and scary as Resident Evil, the polygonal graphics actually add to the creep factor and the soundtrack is absolutely amazing!
Unholy War and Team Buddies are very unique and great games. From mixing strategy and action genres to balance and quality. And if in Unholy War you can play against a friend, then in Team Buddies you could arrange a battle for 4 friends at the same time
*Intelligent Qube* - I remember a demo for I.Q. was a part of the first demo disc I got for the PlayStation. Being terrible at puzzle solving back then, it took a long time for me to actually beat the demo. Cut to 2014 and I finally get the full game. I’ve since beaten it multiple times and consider it a top five puzzle game on the system. *Threads of Fate* - Damn this one hurts. Okay so, up until maybe 2-3 years ago, I thought I didn’t like any turn-based RPG not named Pokémon or Star Wars: KOTOR. I found a complete copy of Threads of Fate for $5 at a thrift store back in 2012 but couldn’t tell from the box whether the combat was turn-based or action. Ultimately, I decided to leave it there because I didn’t want to take the “risk” but, that very night, I looked up some gameplay, saw it was an action-RPG and realized my mistake. Next time I went to that thrift store, the game was gone. Cut to 2024. I still don’t own a copy and the disc alone goes for $35+ online. Oh and it turns out I do like turn-based RPGs, too, so yeah. *Incredible Crisis* - Man this game is insane but in the most fun way you can imagine. From going shopping to having an affair to protecting a freaking UFO, it’s truly something else. *The Unholy War* - This is the only game on the list that I don’t agree with. To be fair, it’s not completely the game’s fault. I knew I would have no interest in the strategy mode of the game and bought it strictly for the fighting game mode. Unfortunately, it falls short in that department, not being bad enough to call it a piece of crap but not good enough to keep coming back to. Oh well. At least there’s the Soul Reaver demo it comes with.

Also I briefly tried Nanotek Warrior a while ago and didn't enjoy it at all, as far as tube shooters go iS: Internal Section is probably a far better recommendation that's basically just as obscure. My personal hidden gem tip on the PS1 is N-Gen Racing, a jet fighter racing flying game with solid visuals, an awesome thumping soundtrack and really thrilling gameplay with a fantastic sense of speed developed by a team partly assembled from former members of Psygnosis of Wipeout fame.
ps1 had the best library ever, it literally had a game for every genre possible, and even for games that didn't have a genre. Shame that with the ps2 all of this disappeared
Thanks for the heads up on unholy wars, looks really sick i been on a ps1 binge with my new emulator playing through legend of dragoon for the first time❤
Not sure about ps1 but...I'll give some PS2 ones I always thought were underappreciated or lesser known. Shadow Hearts. RAD (Robot Alchemical Drive or some such) Shinobi PS2. Of course there are plenty of others but these are 3 I always default to.
