  • Sega's most successful console by far, the Mega Drive (or Genesis, if you want to get renamed for no good reason about this), is absolutely riddled with stone-cold classics that are beloved to this day. Boasting bucketsful of Sega-developed icons and incredibly strong third-party support, the Mega Drive's library was rich in quality and variety, and the console offered an edgier, cooler alternative to bitter rival Nintendo. Thanks to the Mega Drive, Sega was a frontrunner in the console wars during those pre-PlayStation and Xbox days, and the future looked bright for hedgehog enthusiasts the world over. That plucky console could almost do no wrong, and today we're looking through the treasure trove that is its back catalogue. Here are 10 Hidden Gems for the Sega Mega Drive

    McDonald's Treasureland Adventures is a true "hidden gem" for the Genesis. At first you'd think kiddie game, and you'd be correct. But give it a chance and you'll see it's a polished masterpiece.

    Oh yeah, Skitchin', such a great game. I even uploaded all music to my channel years ago, I recommend everyone to have a listen to it. The game is worth it just for the sound test alone. It's sick.

    My go-to is High Seas Havoc (or Cap'n Havoc if you wanna get all EU about this). Absolutely lovely looking game, soundtrack's a belter. Controls are a little on the stiff side, and the difficulty curve is pretty much a vertical line, but it's a really nice little game nobody talks about.

    I actually had most of these on the list, because I was a Genesis enthusiast when I was in my early teens. D&D was as difficult as you said... it was REALLY tough, especially for my adolescent mind. Shadowrun and Buck Rogers were my favorites at the time, too. I *still* like the genesis Shadowrun far more than the SNES one.

      I really need to play Buck Rogers and Genesis Shadowrun one of these days. I collected all the RPG books the Buck Rogers game is based on and I have been playing PNP Shadowrun with friends for years. So many people consider the Genesis game one of the best titles in its library.
      Have you also played Starflight on the Genesis?

  • @teknomax7883

    Hell yeah, I had both Red Zone and D&D Warriors of the Eternal Sun. The first was hard as heck, but had impressive graphics and music. Some of its tunes I still hum nowadays. The second one has a fantastic story (your castle was transported to another dimension where the sun IS ALWAYS UP, so everyone starts becoming mad. I particularly remember the priest, that starts bickering about you needing healing or revive and later on doesn't even do it.
    Oh, and I'm going to have a seizure. WHY THE HECK NO ONE EVER MENTIONED YUU YUU HAKUSHO!???

    I am a long time MegaDrive fan, and even then I've only acknowledged half of the list, from which I still recomend Shadowrun and Skitchin to this day.

      There was a lot of stuff cut out of the game if the spells and equipment lists are anything to go by, and Darkness/Light/Entangle, as well as entering a dungeon with a hidden thief, are incredibly cheap, but just added to the fun so who cares? :)

    I keep hearing about that McDonald's game being good but I don't think I could bring myself to play as that ridiculous character. Good call on Elemental Master and Marvel Land. One of my favourite MD games is one that no one else seems to like so I guess it's a hidden gem, for me at least - Wiz 'n' Liz. It's fast, fun, and there's more to it than it first appears.

  • @davidsarton976

    Honestly, it's surprising how many games centered around Mcdonald's are actually not half bad. MC Kids, Global Gladiators, and Treasure Land Adventure are all pretty good for games licensed around a fast food behemoth.

    You don't play as Buck Rogers in Countdown to Doomsday, it just takes place in the same world as the table top game. He shows up as an NPC though. Great game.

    My personal "hidden gem" (or at least a game nobody really talks about) was Genghis Khan 2. It got me into the grand strategy genre big time.

    • @rsavage-r2v
      @rsavage-r2v ปีที่แล้ว

      Romance of the Three Kingdoms 3 on the Genesis is currently my favorite Koei game, but I've been meaning to get into Genghis Khan as well.
      The later games have too much cruft and rpg mechanics for my taste. I prefer something that focuses on grand strategy.

    • @SonofSethoitae
      @SonofSethoitae ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Game's cool, but it's so involved. I never feel like I have enough time to sit down and actually learn how to play it.

    • @rsavage-r2v
      @rsavage-r2v ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SonofSethoitae Yeah I think they're all actually less complicated than something like Civ or even AoE, but it's so hard to figure out what you're supposed to do in the first place.
      R3K 3 is basically just tax and spend, food comes in July, taxes come in January. All you really need to do is 'Increase Economy' every turn until you have enough income to steam roll. Your officers are your "actions per turn" and your "troop containers".
      Initially these games look like giant spreadsheets and you have no idea how all these numbers interact, but when you eventually figure out what the game is it's not actually that complex.

    I had this game that I actually bought from a store called Electronics Boutique, and I can't remember the name of it but you were this green, 1950's greaser-ghost-dude call Polterguy. A family moved into the house you were haunting, so it was your job to get rid of them by scaring them out of the house. You could possess the furniture, appliances, and all kinds of household items, and use them to scare this really odd-looking family out of your house. I just can't remember the name of the game....🤔
