I don’t believe in leniency for violent crimes in general whether juvenile or not. I believe the lack of consequences and accountability are a part of the increase in overall crimes and therefore we as a society need to take action accordingly.

I'm a mom 0f 3 girls. Hubby always asks me Why I watch these sad cases and I tell him that I want to know every possible way my child could be harmed. I wanna know what these kids are doing to their peers and I want to know what it took to get them kids in the car with that stranger. I want it to frighten and terrify me so I know to be cautious with my own. I tell my kids every story I hear about young kids getting kidnapped or murdered from talking to people online. Apparently social media has threw away the whole idea of stranger danger and Imma put the fear in my girls to NEVER meet anyone or trust anyone online. I told my girls I dont care if they have a weapon, most likely they wont shoot you in public, you make as much noise and put up the biggest fight of your life cause once you get in that car, chances of finding you decreased by more than half. I hate hearing about these things but Im sure that informing myself of the many ways crimes are done against children, help me keep my kids safe. I watch these videos and Im so angry and hurt for the families but most of all Im terrified for future generations. Too many crimes against children smh.

As a Canadian, the Young Offenders Act makes me sick. Wayyy too lenient. I live in Nova Scotia and a few weeks ago we had some youths that murdered a 16 year old boy in Halifax. They’re saying they want to charge them as adults (I think they’ve arrested four or five youths at this point!! This honestly hurts my heart, not only for the young man that died, but for the families of all involved) but I’m not holding my breath for an adult sentence. We will have to see how this particular case pans out in future. The Young Offender’s Act needs to change!!!!!

This is one of the worst miscarriages of justice I have ever seen. Kids as young as 12 or 15 have been tried as adults. There is something especially primitive and more vicious about beating someone to death without a weapon. They had a choice after each and every blow to stop. Every bystander should have been charged with disregard for human life and obstruction of justice. The mitigation was outweighed by the continued assault, bragging, filming and sharing, failure to prevent hypothermia, text content, suborning of witnesses, attempts to lie, cover up and tampering of evidence. I could go on. It is not just that she was indigenous and they rarely get justice. This could be anywhere anytime to anyone's child. My God how are we raising teens to not only not report an injured person but not intercede. Canada, you will have this stain forever. Shame on all who did little or nothing. Not even a blanket to cover her. I am shaking I am so angry. 30 years min should have been the minimum and lucky not to get life.

We sang in our cultural language, we prayed but mostly we healed.

This is a sickening and too common event as we have seen in so many other cases. My heart breaks for the family. While mental health issues are important, I'm so tired of this as an "excuse". Unless it is a severe case, it's no excuse. Those girls are cowards and the crowd who stood by and did nothing are just as guilty. It's sickening that it was recorded, but what better evidence. Canada is too soft on crime in general. They absolutely should have been charged as adults.
You said something in the beginning of the video along the lines of girls being "important" in the families of indigenous people. This surprised me considering the lack of help with all of the missing and murdered indigenous women cases.

I can’t even imagine what her family went through. God bless their souls!! First of all, the girls didn’t get near enough time for what they did. They were under the influence of alcohol, maybe drugs also. They thought they were adult enough for that and they committed a horrible crime. Horrible doesn’t even describe it actually. They didn’t care about their families while they were beating that girl so why should the judge? They bragged about it, laughed about it, and put the pictures and videos on social media. They should have been tried as adults and given the time that should’ve been given in the first place. Instead they got a slap on the hand. I also believe that several others should’ve gotten something just for cheering them on, not helping that girl. Thank you for sharing your videos.

Murder is considered an adult crime. So They should have been tried as adults. They got lenient sentences. If they’re willing to beat a girl so viciously and even saying that they wanted her dead, in my opinion, it won’t stop it from happening again. They’re not going to learn anything with leniency sentencing. It’s like a slap on the wrist. My ex best friend kept her kids home from school for 3 months straight. Claiming they were sick the entire time when in actuality she was just too hungover from daily alcohol and drugs usage and didn’t feel like taking the kids to school. She got a slap on the wrist not learning anything because she still claims they were all sick. If my child had been sick for a whole month, I would have taken them to the doctor. Shoot, if my child was still sick for two weeks, I would’ve taken them to the doctor. So for 3 months of allegedly being sick, she didn’t take them to the doctor. She should have had consequences for her actions. A fine, community service, taking parenting classes, being checked on randomly to make sure the kids were doing fine and that she was doing what she was supposed to do. or all the above. Her kids were neglected and she’s in denial of that. Believes that she always had the best interest of her kids at heart.

Hi, thank you for covering this case and keeping her memory alive. Often Indigenous victims (regardless of who the perpetrator was race/ethnicity wise) aren’t given a platform to spread their story to a broader audience.
I’m mixed Anishinaabe and come from a reserve near Sagkeeng but grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I just wanted to say a few things to help you or the audience out here.
    1. Aboriginal is a term that is getting phased out because of colonial past. First Nations is what we’re usually referred to here in Canada, but Native is also fine!
    2. Sagkeeng is a First Nation reserve (I know it’s usually called a reservation in America) and is usually pronounced sag-geen (I don’t speak Anishinaabe so the proper pronunciation is lost on me).
    3. Canada also uses 911 for our emergency services number.
    4. As for ceremony it’s where a feast, speeches, prayers, medicine (like smudging with sage), traditional drumming/singing and a sacred fire take place. The duration of the fire depends at times, but I’ve known it to burn for 3 days straight. Its purpose is to help us connect to the spirit world to communicate and also guide the spirit on their journey there.
I’m 23 this year and it shocked me hearing that we’re so close in age, her being 19 and me being 16 at the time. So heartbreaking that time keeps passing by and she’s forever 19. 💔
My family was affected by a brutal murder as well. I will never think that the influence of drugs or alcohol should give people less time served. I think that our countries rehabilitation programs in jail and prison are nowhere near effective enough to even excuse our leniency of perpetrators in the first place.

I’m an aboriginal Canadian and thank you Bratterstein for showing Serenity the honor & respect she deserves. It means more than you know to us. The Canadian government uses publication bans and privacy acts to hide from the world the horrific damage they have done and continue to do to indigenous communities. What happened to Serenity is a crime and no one is denying that. However incarceration is only going to introduce those girls into gangs and the violence will continue. What indigenous elders suggest is healing programs which are also monitored and regulated facilities. The indigenous believe in healing the individuals using indigenous methods and medicines and it has been proven to be more effective and lessens the chance of re-offending. Especially with victims of sexual or physical abuse and substance users. Indigenous people are vastly over-represented and make up a rising share in the Canadian prison system, making up 30.04% of the offender population in 2020. When Indigenous persons only make up 5% of the total Canadian population- that’s not right.

I have been a subscriber of yours for a while now. I greatly appreciate you covering this case!! I remember reading about this when it first happened. It's such an awful situation. Thank you for highlighting the huge faults of the Canadian justice system! Particularly when it comes to indigenous women. Many people don't realize how seriously broken the Canadian justice system is, especially since there isn't as much coverage on true crime stories. (Just for future reference, our emergency number is also 911 - I am pretty certain this is accross all of North America). Loyal Canadian following 🙌❤️ keep up the amazing coverage of these people's story

Good thing the video was posted that way because these people provided the police with evidence that would have been harder to get if that group had no concern for anyone they might have lied.

Unbelievable the amount of prison time these murderers get. They should have been tried as adults and gone to prison for 20 years to life. The fact that Serena´s brother got the same time for robbery...terrible.

1997 hurt my soul… I was born in 98. Serena would’ve been turning 27 😭😭😭😭 this is horrible. Serena didn’t deserve ANY of this. Especially not to have people record her while something so vicious is happening. Shame on everybody that participated in this horrible fucking nasty behavior and murder.
Rest in love to Serena 🫶🏽 and I hope and pray that her family can get some sort of peace of mind without Serena one day.

This is so disgusting. She was a beautiful indigenous girl. She was so young!!!!!!! Are you kidding me? This could have been me as a child I’d be so mad if the girls that stomped on me in then in turn, I died. There’s no freaking justice here. I don’t like this at all. ❤ my heart and soul goes out to the mother. I’m so upset listening to this!!!!!!! And I bet they drink and act like menaces to society! How many people will fall victim to these “easy swayed and easily to be a follower of bad things.” Yeah they will both reoffend. Just watch my words. I’m so mad. I’m sorry but this isn’t fair. They should have been tried as adults listen to me: awful things have been done to me as a child, I was all of the things you can possibly think of, I could never fully put my hands on another individual out of fear that I would hurt them I have had to fight for life or death situations, this is inhumane. Nobody could ever force me to stomp on their face because nobody asked for that type of behavior. I’m so upset I still can’t get over this.

The sweat lodge is a very powerful spiritual ceremony and tradition I don't know about Canadian sweat lodge but it's very powerful. I'm of the opinion that they did the crime they should do the time but I think it should be a forfeiture of your life so prison but not bs like college ,commissary, conjugal visits, cell phones. The fact that prison is better than being on the street is no deterrent. WE need to fix this! Thank you for doing this I Love being one of us!😉🧡💜🧡

They should have been tried as adults. The time they got is ridiculous. Other troubled kids hearing this would not be afraid of getting arrested for murder would just tell themselves they’d only get a few years of prison. They took this girl’s life, and just got a few years? People get more time than that for drugs. I know this is Canada, and murderers don’t get long sentences, but at least get ten years.
