To be fair they did change her hours when she brought this up to her boss but when she wanted to work more hours they warned her she would have to be working with Josh to get more hours and she accepted. Granted tho it's not like she was expecting this dude to take her life

@@plaguedoctor4519 Partially incorrect. She had to get her hours CUT to avoid the dude. But she ended up asking for more which in hindsight she might have thought it would have been ok cause he was dating someone else in the store at the time.

I have Walgreens 10 years of my life, so I speak from experience when I say that management does not give a living ISH about it's employees, their mental health or their well-being. They only care about $ at the end of the day. Management will not take complaints like this seriously because they only care that shifts are covered. I am not surprised one bit that something like this happened, it's tragic and should have never happened. My heart is broken for Riley and her family.

Corporate will do everything that they can with their money and power to not be at fault this poor girl's murder.
There have been so many employees who have died from strokes, hypertension, and suicide because of job related stress, but it won't ever make the news.
I'm glad that Riley's murder wasn't swept under the rug like so many other's deaths have been.
Corporate and district managers don't think of their employees as people. They call them 'bodies' which is just sickening, to me.
I hope that her family can get justice and peace. ❤

Walgreens deserves all the flak they're getting for failing to protect her and downplaying the horror that little girl went through. She was still a child and they failed to take things seriously and because of them, she's now dead. It's not like she could have gone to the police given he'd apparently not bothered her outside of work.
Jobs need to take workplace harassment seriously. I hope the mom sues Walgreens not for any financial gain, but to force them to change company policy and make sure something like this never happens again.

It's not difficult. There's cameras and even audio recording everywhere. Her complaints were SUBSTANTIATED the first time, which means, had Walgreens bothered to check, they would have known Riley was immediately telling the truth and had been putting up with shit for a while. Any substantiated claim should be immediate termination along with a report to the police. Sexual harassment especially of a minor is a CRIME. And Walgreens had PROOF. If strong action was taken early on, there's a chance his obsession wouldn't have strengthened the way it did. Every time they get away with or a functional blessing of their disgusting actions they grow more bold.

I’m ducking sick of these nasty, entitled little incels taking the lives of beautiful women who did nothing at all to them.
As for the Q of the day: I suppose after her second time complaining about him Walgreens could’ve fired him, however I sadly don’t think that would’ve necessarily saved her life. 25 mins in and I have some questions I must ask before I forget….
    1. How big is this Walgreens and how long does it take them to notice 2 missing employees?
    2. Was josh creeps shift over or did he just go missing as well?
    3. How many people were on shift that day and regularly? Even if the break room isn’t one that the employees choose to take their breaks in I figure that’s where their lockers are located and that they atleast put their personal stuff in the break room so people would be going in and out minimum start and end of shift possible start and end of breaks for car keys and purses and whatever…
    4. The manager crystal didn’t recognize Josh’s voice as atleas familiar to her? We’re they dating? More questions may follow. I feel like I had more.
I feel so terrible for Riley and her Mom and all who love Riley. ❤️ I’m sending all my love and healing vibes. My heart hurts for Riley and all who love her.

This broke my heart. She was 2 years younger than my only child and I cannot imagine the pain her mom is in 😢 I hope that Walgreens learns from this that if someone is being harassed at work, the harasser needs to be fired. Full stop! He was 28 years old, not some jealous kid, and he definitely had been told that what he was doing is wrong (and should have known that himself period, he’s a predator), so that is my answer to the question of the day.
Riley sounded like the kind of person who would make a huge impact on this world and it always seems like those are they ones targeted because that much goodness and promise seems to be targeted by the evil in this world. Thank you Brittany for letting us get to know Riley and be inspired by her! I will be donating to her scholarship fund regularly and try to inspire others to be like Riley because we DO desperately need many more Rileys in this world! I will also pray for her mom because I know what it is like to have a child like Riley and I couldn’t bear to lose him.

This couldve happened to my daughter. My oldest daughter got her first job at age 16 at a local mall store and unknown to either of us, she was working with a registered sex offender. His previous offense was with an underage girl. Thank God that I had looked at the sex offender registry and happened to see him on there otherwise I would never have known. I let the manager know she wouldn't be working there anymore and they said they didn't know, but kept him on staff for over a year after.

Old souls are predated on. I know I wasn’t left alone the second I started to “fill in” and “mature”. Life was exhausting because you were either loved or you were hated. And when people hated you or wanted something, they would be willing to do anything to get that OR make you suffer as much as they did.

This is so sad. It reminds me of a murder that took place years ago in our area, not so much the details of the murder, but that the mother was left alone. Ann Harmeier was killed in 1977 returning to IU campus. Her father was dead, and she was an only child. Her case remains unsolved.

I can’t imagine how lonely it must have been for Riley’s mom losing her only daughter, only child. Walgreens definitely should have stepped up when Riley said something. • @Nglckat

This is horrible. She was still a child. She had an adult that was obsessed with her and couldn't handle that she just wasn't interested.... Walgreens should have most certainly done more to keep her safe especially once she came to them a second time. It was their responsibility to protect their youngest and most vulnerable employee and they dropped that ball completely.
I've got the same suggestion about the triple homicide. The case has pretty much wrapped up at this point. He goes back in June for more things in regards to the 2nd degree murder charge but the others got him 1st degree.....

  • @archivallibrarian1319
    @archivallibrarian1319 ปีที่แล้ว +1

In answer to the “question of the day”, Walgreens IS absolutely culpable in this case and should be held accountable for not taking care with their teen/underage employees. They, and all employers, should be required to make special considerations for any employee that feels unsafe from a coworker, especially when the employee is a teen and the coworker is an adult! The imbalance between the two is a burden too big for a teen to navigate on their own, or even in many cases for a parent to be able to assist them through it without HR and management help. Employees like Walgreens need to acknowledge that a large portion of their employees are teens and female and need to be heard, helped, and protected from coworkers that target them for stalking, harassment, and violence and murder! At the first awareness that Riley (or any employee, especially underage) is so uncomfortable that she needs to ask not to work with a coworker harassing her, Walgreens should have sent in a specific HR manager to handle the offender Joshua. He should have been the one who’s hours were affected, and put in process to move to another location with understanding that this is his probation period starting again, due to inappropriate behavior with underage coworkers. And that if he tries to contact her again he will be terminated immediately, even if he’s at another location, and at that point he will also be reported to police for stalking at that point too. Labor laws and employers really need to improve and take more responsibility for their role.

I had never heard of this case before but wow how terrible. I feel like Walgreens could have done more to prevent something like this from happening, although I'm sure nobody there could have foreseen that something this bad would actually happen and especially not during business hours. I just think that if an employee is harassing another employee that the employee doing the harassing should be terminated or at the very least moved to a different store. It also seems like to me that he had planned this murder and very likely could have been planning to kill Riley's boyfriend as well as it's not normal for him to have had his social security number and personal information in his possession. This case is just so tragic and I appreciate you covering it in your compassionate way like you do all of the cases you cover. I hope this perpetrator is punished to the fullest extent of the law. Even the manager admitted he was acting inappropriately on more than one occasion. Fire him and honestly, report his ass, blacklist. But nooooo, Multi Billion dollar corporations are so desperate for warm bodies at minimum wage you can't fire the creeps even with proof!

I was listening to this while driving down from the mountains (I'm home and parked now when I'm commenting this, don't worry) and even though all of the cases make me sad, I was just crying the whole way through this one and idk why. Maybe because I'm a Coloradan now and I'd been living here in Denver for three years already when this happened to Riley. But mostly because she was so young but she was JUST about to explode into adulthood and grow and change and become even that much more amazing than she already was as a teen and just... ugh. She seemed to be burning so bright as a warm, loving fire that everyone loved to be around and the fact that that was snuffed out before she could fully mature into herself is such a loss for herself, for her family, and for her entire community. 😥

So my thought is they should have transferred him to another Walgreens or fired him after the second complaint.

My son is named Reily and that is exactly why we chose his name because it means courage and is known to be a strong Irish name and me and his dad are mostly Irish and British and I have some Native American in me as well. But That’s why we chose his name because it means courage 😢 this poor girl

As parent, this one was hard. Not too mention how tragically Riley was taken. I hope the dingleberry gets his brutal karma in prison. Cause as a parent, you let him out, I'll finish his sentence. I don't think I could find a way into the light after losing one of my babies. And the parents that bring something beautiful out of something so tragic and heartbreaking, they're far better people than I could be. I'd be after justice. Eye for an eye if you hurt my kids. My heart to her family.

I do know what it feels like to bury a child- I've buried two sons. But, still, I always say that I have absolutely NO IDEA how these parents feel or how they get thru it day to day being their reality, when their children are taken from them in THESE kind of ways. Cause, that? I cannot even begin to fathom it. 😭😭

Walgreens is horrible they DO NOT protect employees! I worked there literally 1 day! When I started I got 20 min of training and then was left to work the entire front part of the store alone! They clda cared less. They said one certain cst was always shoplifting and to watch him but then said don’t leave the front so yea I watched him steal and walk right on out smh this poor baby didn’t deserve this the fact there resolution was to cut her hours instead of disciplining him was crazy! I hate to say nothing was gone save her that boy was is crazy but Walgreens made it so easy for him!

It is puzzling that they didn't check the breakroom immediately.... When the missing person was on break. I've worked at jobs like this and been sitting in the breakroom literally dozens of times when a manager popped their head in looking for someone. So sad 😢

Everything you said at the end about being a Mom and to only one child I feel so hard at the end of these cases where parents lose children especially when it’s their only child. I’m 35 years old and I have only one daughter and the idea of losing her at any point is terrifying and I think it would be terrifying no matter how many kids I have but something about her being my only one makes a scary world even more terrifying. I want so badly for my daughter to have atleast one sibling but pregnancy does terrible and terrifying things to me mental health wise especially. I also suffer from a lot of chronic pain issues and those are amplified with pregnancy.

    RIP Riley.
I think the nearly 30 year old man who was creeping out a teenager should have been made to switch shifts, and if he continued his behavior just once, he should have been fired. But would all of that just pissed him off and made him do this anyway? I think the only way to save her would have been for her to quit her job. But no one should have to lose their job to get away from a weird person. Just sucks. She did the right thing by reporting and he just is disgusting and evil.

This is such a horrible tragedy. Prayers to Riley and her family. RIP as may her memory be a blessing. She sounds like she was a wonderful person who was sadly given her wings far too young. Idk what the Walgreens management could have done differently other than refuse to give her the extra shifts at night where her murderer was given access to be in proximity to her. I was stalked at work by a co-worker when I was in college and one of my daughters was repeatedly s*xually harassed by a co-worker. The company fired my daughter's harasser and fortunately nothing more happened. Very heartbreaking and disturbing that Riley was not safe at her place of employment and I hope that her mother gets the justice that Riley deserves. Her murderer is an evil pos who deserves to live behind bars and never be free again

Could you tell the story of Missy Grubaugh? She was murdered by a guy she worked with. Who she thought was her friend. She was killed because this man wanted her virginity. It is a sad case. Please and thank you. Love you ❤️🙂

This story is so sad , poor little girl.
    Vile disgusting giant bully.
I wish all schools would scrap the standard Physical Education classes and replace them with realistic self defense classes! Especially for the girls.
Here in Wales , majority of kids when I was in school, made excuses to miss P.E lessons but self defense is not only a life skill but a necessity so many need in this cruel world (especially females unfortunately)
