Today we’re going to talk about autoimmune conditions and what causes autoimmune conditions?
An autoimmune condition is a situation where your body has created immune cells that are attacking itself.
This creates inflammation, and the inflammation creates a lot of collateral damage. It’s all of the free radicals that end up actually destroying the tissue.
The immune cells that are attacking itself are called autoantibodies. You can have these autoantibodies to pretty much any tissue in the body.
What autoimmune conditions boil down to is one cell called the Th17 cell becoming overactive. Excessive amounts of this cell are responsible for autoimmune conditions.
In your immune system, you have a lot of different T cells. The T stands for thymus. Typically T helper cells do things like recruiting help to fight infection and generating weaponry. It’s the main controller in the battle against infections.
One of the functions of these cells is to maintain the intestinal barrier. This is the barrier that helps keep out viruses and pathogens. If there’s a break in the wall and harmful bacteria get in, they can invade the inside of the body, causing an immune attack. Now, your body is going to start creating antibodies against these cells. If those cells are pathogens, this is a good thing. But, what if those cells are your own cells? This, of course, wouldn’t be good.
Another function of Th17 cells is making sure that the body doesn’t destroy its own tissue. This cell could help prevent autoimmune conditions.
The Th17 cells also work with the T regulatory cells, which have an even greater function of preventing autoimmune diseases. It may also help suppress autoimmune diseases and hyperinflammatory conditions. T regulatory cells also calm down infections.
When the Th17 cell doesn’t work as it should, you’re at risk for getting a movement of bacteria across the intestinal barrier. This could lead to chronic infection and chronic inflammation.
It’s unclear how these cells become overactivated. But, what is known is that there are usually several things involved, such as:
    1. Infection
    2. Stress
    3. Malnourishment
Vitamin D can potentially help bring down this overreaction of the Th17 cell.

My mother grew up in extreme poverty.
She had rheumatic fever, and polio in childhood.
She developed psoriasis as a teenager.
As an adult, she struggles with constant infections such as boils.
Diabetes, hypothyroidism, ....her medical history is pages long.
She takes many, many, many meds and has a terrible relationship with food.
Now in a care home at age 92....in severe pain ....whacked out on pain killers.
I do my best to live holistic lifestyle.
So far, at age 71, no RX meds!
I can't change my mother's history but, hopefully, I can not follow in her footsteps.

About ten years ago I got Mono. It went away after a few months but I was left with a horrible autoimmune disorder that lasted for almost two years. My life felt like it stopped because I was so ill. Although not able to help directly, my GP told me that I was very low on Vitamin D so I started taking 5000 IU every day. Eventually and unexpectedly, my health was restored (I truly thought my life was over) and I've been well ever since. I'm 63 now and every day I express gratitude that I'm able to walk so fluidly and play the piano without any arthritis (parents and grandparents had it). I'm very lucky indeed. Thank you Dr. Berg for all this priceless information.

I have a whole collection, and not just the normal ones, like RA (which I also have) but Myasthenia Gravis, and some other more common ones. I eat the autoimmune diet. No nightshades, no high FODMAPS, no grains... trying to heal my gut. Which has really helped as now I can cheat with cream cheese stuffed jalapeños! And no stomach pain! I don’t do it very often cuz of the jalapeños being nightshades and those chemicals or whatever is in nightshades like tomatoes... used to kill my stomach. Now I do IF and keto AND AIP (autoimmune protocol diet) so I’ve lost 35 pounds and I don’t take any medication and I’m not in a wheelchair any more or wearing a neck brace to hold my own head up, or take Mestinon every 4 hours to breathe. I can do a one minute plank and I can walk around Walmart. Just giving up gluten alone, was life changing. I’ve added all your suggestions to my world and I’m on a whole new level. And yep, I tested low low low on vitamin D. Thanks for all you do.!

Amber Delivered yep, my food is my medicine and I take zero pills for any of my issues. They had me on 60mg of prednisone daily and wanted to raise it. I was taking pills for all of it... that was ten years ago. I don’t take any meds. I love tomatoes but the chemical in that nightshade, makes my arthritis go crazy. Sometimes I cheat, knowing I’m gonna hurt for days. Then I remember why I don’t eat the,, lol. I’ve cheated enough in ten years to know without a doubt, that what I eat, triggers my autoimmune stuff. It’s a hard diet to stick with but like they say, if you are sick enough, you will do it... when you cheat enough, you will remember why it’s so important not to cheat. I still cheat, lol. I guess I haven’t learned my lesson yet. My hubby can eat anything, he is lean and fit and healthy and he eats HORRIBLE stuff every meal! Tons of sugar and bread and corn syrup. He’s 63 and can do a 6 minute plank and never has an arch or pain. I don’t get how some people can eat whatever and still be so unaffected. But whatever flipped the switch to autoimmune, I’m stuck with it and the least little thing will send me into a nose dive. But it’s so hard to watch him eat a pack of Oreos or a giant pizza or a big waffle cone full of ice cream. I know there are keto ice creams out there but I miss my freaking waffle cone, lol. I’m so weak but I can’t afford to cave

This was incredibly useful and informative. 10 years ago I was diagnosed with Lichen Planopilaris, which was later changed to frontal fibrosing scarring alopecia. I’m unsure as to the difference. But for the past 18 months I’ve taken vitamin D, omega 3 and turmeric daily. I also took up meditation around 10/12 minutes every morning and I have seen a noticeable improvement. My hair has stopped falling out, I’ve lost about 15% around temples/ forehead, and I’ve lost eyebrows and beard. I should say I’m a 60 year old man, the condition having started at the age of 50. I know stress caused the problem, my job at the time was incredibly stressful, I really do believe we underestimate the sheer collateral damage stress has in our physical and mental health, and I speak as a retired mental health clinician.

look into using lots of glutamine powder daily. We really learned the benefits of this long ago treating HIV patients. And more later on.
There are algorithms so seek the cause of GI irritation. Have the GI doc run them. Is your pancreas doing what it needs to in order to digest food; is your stomach putting out enough HCL; do you have intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) causing a mass of problems (very common these days and easy to detect).
So, I recommend lots of Glutamine daily (buy bulk powder online cheap); and, see your GI doc to determine why you have GI troubles.

Yes but having tried keto which encouraged me it is Carnivore that making the huge difference. I bought an expensive adrenal glandular with pantothenic acid formula; took it but suspected it was causing me more hot flashes. Could be eating a plant and animal fats, which mess with the guts digestion. so not using it, walking 2x daily lowers blood sugars or is it blood pressure after my 2 meals a day; and my energy has soared so I feel vital & stronger after 18 hrs of fasting intermittently.

Fascinating. I had no idea that those dosages were being used for autoimmune issues. I recently used 50-80K iu at day for several days to kill a flu virus (or COVID, but who knows!). My levels were already good, thank goodness, or I may not have fared as well. I would love to see more information around disease and dosing from the natural health community; I think many people would benefit from it. Getting a baseline number is required, and many doctors are routinely checking levels nowadays.

No one ever got skin cancer and we were in the sun from sun up to sun down. I've NEVER used sun screen and I spend as much time in the sun that I have time for. I believe people who get skin cancer have nutritional deficiencies that lead to the cancer and not the sun. As a kid everything we ate was fresh with little to no sugar and fruits. • @DRourk

    Here's what caused mine:
    - Not enough sleep for an extended period of time. Averaged maybe 4 hours for many days for about 6 months.
    - More stress in my life than I normally deal with, for an extended period of time
    - Eating out too much, for an extended period of time (I was so busy with work and family that I ate out every day for 4-5 months). It was higher quality restaurant food, but it was still restaurant food.
    - Not near enough sun. Because I was working so much I got almost no sun for an entire summer. Labor day weekend I was as white as could be. First time in my entire life this happened. Every other year I normally have a nice tan by mid June at the absolute latest.
Add all that up, and autoimmune issues began.
It's been a long journey (almost 3 years) to correct all of this, but I'm almost at 100%. (It takes a long time to break the human body to the point you get autoimmune issues, and it takes a long time to heal it - especially when you don't know how to at first, and finding good information isn't easy.)
Tips (based on experience, that I wish I knew going into this):
    - Get Sun!!!!!
    - Get Sleep!!!!!
    - Avoid artificial light, especially Blue Light (it messes with your hormones more than you realize) - you really don't want ANY exposure starting a couple hours before you want to sleep.
    - Do not eat any grains, any processed foods, any nuts. Pretty much take all of Dr Berg advice except I strongly suggest limiting veggies and going more animal (grass fed beef, pasture raised X, wild caught seafood). The one thing I disagree with Dr. Berg on is the amount of veggies he generally suggests eating. Veggies have lechtins and other defenses that wreak havoc on the human body in the long run and definitely exacerbates any autoimmune issues you might be experiencing. Nutrients in veggies are generally also a lot less bio available to humans. We are designed to primarily eat meat and get our nutrients from meat, not plants. Do note, I'm not saying eliminating veggies completely. I have found that certain types help or at least don't cause problems. Specifically fermented foods like sauerkraut and pickles. Leafy greens, nightshades, and cruciferous though, avoid avoid avoid.
I say this from experience. I tried the veggie way at first. It doesn't work. In fact it exacerbated my problems. You'll find a great many other people out there who have cured themselves of autoimmune issues saying the same thing...

I was sick since last year, then I noticed I felt better eating less veggies. I have possibly so many problems but my doctor won't check for them. I wanna check stomach acid, my thyroid my liver. I heard before that thyroid is just secondary to other problems, usually liver starts it. Honestly I have no idea what to eat, or what supplements to take, I lost alot of weight I'm under BMI. I take omega 3, i feel without them my body is inflamed. Should I just take omega complex?

Infection, stress, and malnutrition sum up why I believe I've had an autoimmune disease since I was a baby! My mom didn't have a healthy pregnancy with me. I was born prematurely at a bad time in her life so she ended up with terrible postpartum and neglected me a bit. She would leave me sleeping all day without feeding me and I was already only 4lbs when I was born. So that's the stress and malnutrition part lol the infection part could've been in utero or shortly after birth.

You rock. I have had eczema for several years now that is now getting much better. Keto with IF, vitamins A, B-complex, D, E, zinc, selenium and Omega 369 have been my regularly taken additions (every 2 days) and daily vitamin C in large dose. BUT ALSO recently DAILY collagen powder in a drink and extra Biotin have brought about even greater improvements. I expect to be "cured" of my Eczema (to perhaps 95%) within another 6 more months. After 3 months of Keto/IF with vitamins and supplements I have reached at least 70% to 80% improvement. My dermatologist was super impressed when I last saw him two weeks ago for a follow up. Last year, same time (before I learned of Keto etc) I had to be put on prednisone for 7 weeks. I don't look anything like I did then. To the observer, I seem to have no obvious eczema.

Thank you Dr Berg for explaining that so beautifully. That message will be well received now by the type 1 diabetics I tried to tell them this before 🙏🙏👍👍 the fact that Vitamin D is so important. There is a trigger for type 1 diabetes. A stress event. With lack of vitamin D it can be a big problem.

Diabetes 2 starts by trigger, not type 1

Dr Berg. Is there a way we could find information on this subject. The root cause of type 1 diabetes ?

Thank you…. My sister and brother died of autoimmune disease (type 1 diabetes) and i always wondered why i was spared… now I understand .. i was the one that played outside all day long .. riding my bike and playing in sandbox, etc and my brother and sister stayed inside and played indoors most of the time…. Vitamin D must have created the difference…… so why are we shortening kids recess time in schools???

I have battled juvenile diabetes since I was a young child. I was very active and playing outside every day. 5 decades ago Drs still had diabetics on very restricted diets. I definitely didn’t have the carbohydrates necessary to sustain my being active and blacked out many times. The point being...I had much sun but I’m certain my levels needed to be raised. My sister rarely went outside. She was overweight and eventually had issues with her pancreas being stressed as an adult. This was rare when I was a child, obesity was not common. Juvenile diabetes is not caused by a lack of sunshine or I wouldn’t have had this nasty disease all my life.
