One of my favorite videos to date. Thrilled you showed the cardboard trick. I’ll be giving it a try. Final result with masks was fantastic despite the fast drying paint! Thank you! 😊
I use Murphys soap , half water and half soap , you just spray it on and wipe it off , you can also soak your rollers in it to , it cleans your gelli plate and your rollers , I'm Linda Bailey from Corpus Christi Texas , Susan you need to do this it works great and it seasons your gelli plate too .
Hi Linda, Yes that is what I use. But when I need to get to work quickly I just use the hand sanitizer and baby wipes. This was many layers of paint and a quick wipe wasn't going to do it. I also use baby oil every couple of weeks. Thanks for your comment.
I'm finding a lot of stuff around the house to add texture to my projects. I see everything as a texture when I'm shopping, too. You've taught me so much and I'm having so much fun with my plate. Thank you so much!
You can wet the area you are trying to peel off the cardboard using a paintbrush and a little water. It helps it come off easier. I saw another artist, Mark Yeates, do this. I haven’t done it myself though.
I think I saw that video last year. I will try that. Thanks for reminding me. Although I liked where I didn't get a clean lift. The parts that stuck where nice.
Packing tape works well to clean off the gel plate. Just put the tape on the plate’s surface and pull. A small crochet hook is also good for removing bits of paper between the cardboard corrugations. As others have noted, dap in the areas of paper you wish to remove from the corrugated cardboard makes the whole lot easier Thanks for your enjoyable videos. Greetings from Canada
I recently discovered the reason my packing tape wasn't working. It was a cheap brand. Not all packing tapes works it seems. But I find it still doesn't get all the crusty bits off. Maybe it's my paint.
I look at everything differently now that I'm using the gel plate. I see texture in everything. My newest find is an onion bag. It leaves a really fine print on the plate. I love it!
Cardboard is one of my very favorite texture plates. I do a lot of shipping and any box I cut down is fair game for my gel plates. I like your idea of cutting shapes, I just pull sections off, but will try this. I also keep each one. As the layers build up of different colors, the cardboard gets really beautiful. I'm planning a framed wall piece with just the multi-layered cardboard pieces, perhaps in a quilt-like or log cabin design.
I love that idea of using the cardboard pieces in a piece of artwork. That will be beautiful. I love the paint on my stencils sometimes too. It looks so beautiful I just want to glue into a collage. I have done that.
Some GREAT results, here! I really think you should hang onto the colorful piece at approximately 35:00 & after, that didn't fully pull up. Come back to it in a week or two and see what you think, then. Except possibly for the stray marks on the left (purple) margin, I think these are extremely rich and interesting shapes. I kind of wish they were on deli paper or wet-strength tissue so you could make them transparent, for as collage layers, because I love the broken, degraded edges so much. But even as they stand (and maybe turned vertically with the purple at the top?) I think you produced a very interesting result. I think one of the reasons that print didn't pull completely, the first time, is that your paint layer may be thinning a lot, by the time your brayer reaches the edges of the plate. That would make those areas dry much more quickly. For plate cleanup (and also for retouching areas before pulling a print, in case of stray marks), I learned from the Yeates Makes channel that you can use masking tape, wrapped around your finger(s) sticky side out. Clear packing tape also works, and can actually result in nice clear elements to attach to a collage, if you don't mind the gloss. I haven't yet tried the kind of wide transfer tape used with a vinyl cutter, but it might work very well, too. And I think some is available in a more matte finish. Finally, and also on the subject of giving yourself a chance to love your results, while the "mistake" of brayering the Titan Green Pale off onto the brightly-colored roll-off sheet did result in a less vibrant sheet, it's still quite beautiful. It has a similar feel to the two plate-cleaning prints you pulled, both of which I also actually love. If you imagined those as huge, floor-to-ceiling canvases, I could easily see them hanging in a gallery. I always love work that seems very simple, at first glance, but rewards closer observation by revealing complexities and subtleties not immediately obvious. Those two pulls have that in spades!
Thanks for you comment. I always keep everything. Bit of a hoarder. Because eventually I find a use for prints I thought I didn't like. I scan the brayer sheets to make printables. They can be very interesting.
I love the card board idea. So, I'm sitting here drawing and cutting out a design to use on my gelli plate from a card board box that I received today. I hope it works. ty
Great demo because you are playing. Love it. If it helps I saw a video where the demonstrator sprayed the cardboard just to dampen then tore off the paper layer.
I have a question: why are you not puttning your leaves with the backside down? That would give you a print with the leaves's nerves showing and make a more interesting print.❤🌿
Was I using leaves in this video? I didn't remember that. If you meant in the other video I chose to lay them the way they wanted to. The stem was causing them to not want to lay flat. Depends on the leaves I guess. Thanks for watching.
@@SusanCliftonArtist Oh, sorry if I confused up the videos! Sometimes I binge watch, I have to confess🙄😀 It's so inspiring to watch your work! I agree with you, the plants have a will of their own sometimes in how they want to be placed on the gel plate❤🌿
Hi Susan...what is the paper type and brand you use in this video for printing? Looks like deli paper of some sort? It looks very efficient...thanks....Brian

I don't use tissue all that much. Deli paper is a lot more transparent. I haven't tried the wet strength yet so I can't compare with it. Have you tried that?
@@SusanCliftonArtist I have printed with the wet strength tissue but have not used it in a collage. It definitely is strong. I haven’t used it in a collage yet as I am new and still making papers!!
That never worked for me. Plus my studio only has a small bathroom sink that I share with non-artists. They wouldn't be happy if I decided to soak my plate. LOL.
Yep but then the plate is a little greasy for a few days. When I want to get back to work the hand sanitizer works best. But Baby oil is great to do every few weeks or so to condition the plate. Thanks for your comment and for watching.
Love that cardboard stamp !! ❤️🙏❤️
I do too! It's my favorite.
I love the way my mind goes, I read your title as Inspiration Thieves, and I thought, well that sounds interesting. Haha
I read thieves too…

Metallics are always a good thing.
I always like them at the time I'm creating them but I very seldom use them in Collage. I don't know why.
Water proof titebond all can seal the surface of the cardboard

I just love your gelli printing. I’m wondering what kind of deli paper you use?
I found this one on Amazon. It was only I found that wasn't folded in half. amzn.to/498i17b

It will work. Some people are suggesting to paint on some water to make it easier.
If you paint water on cardboard and add to sit for a few minutes, the later you want to remove will come off easier and cleaner
You are the third person to mention that. Great ideas come in multiples. Thanks for watching.

The water attacks the glue it really easy to peel when damp❤ use a water brush for fine detail
I will next time.

It's called Patreon. It's a membership site where I post more videos and have zoom calls. You can find it here. www.patreon.com/SusanCliftonArtist
What kind of paper did you use
I use rice paper and deli paper. The deli paper is for the transparent papers. They should be listed in the description.
My new plate is extremely sticky, what does that mean
What kind of paint do you use? The plate is usually a bit oily not sticky. Is it sticky even before you apply paint?
Yes, it very sticky, but I have oiled it and it seems to be making a difference
Use water it works well less stress(lol)

baby oil or mineral oil clean it
