    1:13:00 - It's me. I'm the debater.
    York's division was issued the M1917, and he mentions that fact in his writings, but in a letter written by York to his old comrade James P. Cooper on Sept 20, 1920, York states:
    "Say James do you remember that little Springfield rifle that you gave me as we went up to the front line. That is the rifle that I did my shooting with. I used it and my Colts pistol."
    From what I'm told, James was transferred into York's regiment from a regular Army unit to help fill it out. The regular units were all issued 1903s.

    I own a 1913 1911 Colt service .45. Can still dust a gnat’s ass at 25 yards with it. Rarely shoot but I actually shot it a couple months ago. It was my great grandfather’s WWl service pistol. Back in those days you could purchase your service pistol once your service obligations were over. He did that. It has 18 little tic marks on it for all the targets he successfully engaged during his involvement in trench warfare. I am the 4th member of my family to own this pistol. Myself & all previous family members were all veterans of military service. My grandfather gave me this wonderful piece when he started to get too old to even responsibly have a gun. My father was never in the military, so he got skipped over & I got it instead, in keeping with the tradition of staying in veteran hands. He was a little mad but he got over. Certainly my most prized possession. Love that pistol.

    This video has answered so many questions about my own 1914 vintage 1914. I was told by a couple 1911 forums my pistol was just a parts gun. Seems that’s not the case at all whatsoever. I was also told that since my pistol is just a parts gun it’s only worth 700 to 800 bucks. Not that price is a big deal it was just they were trying to act like my pistol was nothing special. I don’t care who you are a pistol that dates back to 1914 is special. It’s literally 3 years after the original 1911 was released. I’ll never get rid of this pistol it’s simply the coolest thing ever to me.

    Sitting here listening to this episode while carrying my double stack .45ACP 1911. It really is pretty funny how this gun can still hang with modern designs once you simply add some accessories and a double stack frame on it. 15+1 flush fit .45ACP and 18+1 extended is in line with the recently released FN 545's capacities.
    That has more to do with how little handguns have evolved since the 1911, though. There's more of a mechanical difference between the 1911 and a Luger than the 1911 and a Glock. Hell, 100 years before the 1911, we were still using flintlocks. Over 110+ years after the 1911, we're still using the same basic tilting barrel, short recoil mechanism with a slide that the 1911 pioneered.

    I had a Colt 1911 Government model made for commercial sale in 1917. Well, I still have it but it’s unusable and nothing what it was. It was a pretty rare 1911 since it was a commercial 1911 built in a year when 99% of the 1911s were made for the US Army. Only a few thousand were sold to the public. This particular gun was in 99% condition since the old guy I bought it from, who bought it new, might have shot less than a few hundred rounds and the only wear was on the very tip of the muzzle where it rubbed the holster it spent it’s life in. The spot was barely noticeable and pretty tiny.
    Sadly, in 2011, my home was lost, along with 1300 others in a wildfire. So all of my guns were exposed to hours of fire. Unlike the modern polymer pistols, the metal was still there but it’s lost all its strength and surface treating. By the time they let us onto our property a week later what was left was a rusty mess.
    But until then it was a great pistol. I got to use it for a couple decades and treated it like the great weapon it was. I still have it. But it’s not a shooter anymore.
    I also lost a Colt New Service chambered in 44Russian of similar era. She was bought from the same old guy. Colt made some fine guns back then.

      I’ve built 2 rifles from fires very nasty ones . A polish 1969 ak and a psa m4 both were rusted to death and very hot all springs just a weeping mess the ar aluminum was melted. The ar had a fn barrel I’ve fired 2600 rds from it and it’s holding up as it it were never in a fire. The polish ak I’ve fired over 1k rounds with no visible difference to the bolt lugs. I think the metal fatigue is over stated. I fired the ar the most at I reload and it’s cheaper to load and I made those round very hot. I didn’t have a chrono and loaded em until the primers would crater a little. If u have those guns I’d build em back ceracoat theyll shoot fine

    One of the most comfortable pistols I've eve had the pleasure of firing. I even find the grip more comfortable than the Browning Hi-Power. I have fairly small hands aand find the Browning grip too wide to be comfortable yet the 1911 fits me perfectly. The apparent muzzle heaviness tends to make the recoil feel much milder than it really is. It's great to see a discussion between two people so knowledgeable about firearms.

    Having followed C&Rsenal from the beginning, I will be forced to admit that it was, in fact worth waiting for this episode. Othais and team have become first-rate historians. Two quick observations: First it's actually very easy to rack a 1911 (or other slide-operated gun with sights), one-handed. I was trained to do so in the Navy, but I'm not sure when that was first officially taught. Second, notice the group that Mae shot, one-handed, not rapid but not slow-fire either. Compare that group to all the others over the years. This from an over one hundred-year old gun. While I don't quite worship at the altar of the 1911 and the .45 ACP for use in today's world, I will agree that this pistol was the hands-down BEST fighting handgun of WW1. Can't wait for the day when they get to the improved version: The Browning/Saive High Power!

    Every once in a while a gun is developed that changes everything. The Henry, the Peacemaker, the Mauser K98. The Colt Government Model .45 did this so hard that most guns that came after it still take insperation from it. The 1911 is iconic as all those others, and can still be considered a modern pistol. I would personally say that the next major pistol development would be about 70 years later with the Glock striker fire and polymer construction.
    Some may say it is sacrilage to mention the Glock and the 1911 in the same breath, but I would say they are the 2 most influencial pistols ever.

    I want to say that the 1911 did contribute to handgun ergonomics, though perhaps not as overall big picture as the Luger, the safety lever on the 1911 is just nearly perfect. Its in the right spot and its pivot point, sweep, and positive retention are all practically unimproveable. The Luger safety is frankly in the wrong direction. Its awkward to use vs the 1911 which says alot about how well Browning integrated that thumb safety as the Luger safety is a lot better than many of its contemporaries but the 1911 safety is just that much better.
    Perhaps some say that its irrelevant today because so many pistols no longer have thumb safeties but compared to the market low point for single action autoladers being in the 1980s the single action pistol has been making a strong comeback and the 2011 is very much winning over younger shooters as the design is refined and simplified to meet duty/defense standards of reliability. Ironically over 100 years on it seems the 1911 has evolved into a pistol that maintains its presence in duty use and the original single stack was still being used by certain units well into the Global War On Terror not to mention its undying popularity among civilians for concealed carry use as its slim profile betrays its full size status.
    It never ceases to amaze me how popular and beloved this gun still is.

    • @gameragodzilla
      @gameragodzilla ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think a testament to the 1911 safety design is the current US service pistol, adopted only a few years ago, uses a 1911 style thumb safety where up is safe and down is fire. Hell, it even uses the tilting barrel mechanism. So in some ways, the M17 and M18 are just modernized, updated 1911s.

    • @Full_Otto_Bismarck
      @Full_Otto_Bismarck ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@gameragodzilla What is old is new again, the bore axis, the grip angle, the controls placement, the m17 and m18 are more like a 1911 than it's striker fired mechanism would have one thinking at first glance.

    • @gameragodzilla
      @gameragodzilla ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Full_Otto_Bismarck Yup. Granted, I honestly think the fact that the 1911 sticks around for so long stems more from how little handgun technology has actually evolved in the last 100 years than anything else. Most pistols still use a tilting barrel, short recoil action with a slide, even if it's slightly modified with the Webley style locking block, so the only thing the 1911 in its base form lacks is features. And features can easily be bolted onto the same basic design.
      Hell, as you mentioned, the 2011 is basically that. Capacity too low? Put on a double stack frame. Sights are shitty? Replace them with high vis night sights or even mount a red dot. Can't mount accessories? Put a rail on the dust cover. Gun too heavy? You can have a polymer grip module and even alloy frames. Pretty much anything and everything can be added to the basic design and still keep up with modern guns. My current EDC is a double stack 1911, though mine's built off an all metal Para frame both because I prefer the heavier weight for recoil management (even have an aluminum grip module for my P320) and higher capacity options in .45ACP. 15+1 flush fit of .45 is a lot of firepower. lol
