@@simonbach3618 There were many, many of those Brazilian Madsen guns, and they actually still use the things, most likely. Built originally for the Brazilian military in 7mm Mauser, when deemed obsolete it went to Law Enforcement, eventually rebarreled for 7.62mm NATO. They said they were gonna retire them a long time ago, supposedly in 2008, but they were still seen being used by 2018, because the things were built like bankvaults and just truck along, and it's hard to argue with a powerful machinegun that always works when you don't have a lot in your budget. Imagine that, an antique light machinegun, the first of its kind, really, designed in the 1800s, still being rocked around and used in urban combat into the 2000s. It was incredibly ahead of its time and it's not shabby.
I forgot to add: as a hobbyist metalworker and novice blacksmith: ouch, shots fired. Remember that the most beautiful (and expensive) historical Spanish and Italian sabres, the most intricate and ornate filigreed French and Belgian rapiers, were all hand-forged by swordsmiths ;D
MN resident. Bought my first AR for my 26 birthday, smooth sided bushmaster. Took it to the range in a snowy November. Shot a group. Changed targets. Sat back down and the bolt was frozen. Sat in my truck for 20 min. Shot another group. Bolt froze again. Built a second upper with a forward assist and dust cover. I've shot a bunch of times in snowy weather and only had the bolt stick twice. Both times pushing the forward assist and a single round was enough to fix the malfunction.
The other problem with aerospace/aeronautical engineering is that it most likely means living in Washington state, california, or Wichita. Kansas is pretty good for gun owners, if you don't mind having your home wiped out by a tornado every now and then.

When looking for a pistol in 1905, I think it would be hard to beat a FN 1903. straight blowback, so it will be cheaper then any locking design. The 9mm cartridge is only slightly less powerful then 9mm parabellum. And, it was designed by John Browning making it cooler then to luger, but just as cool as the colt 1905, since he designed that as well.
Not a bad choice either. Though I dunno about only slightly less powerful. It looks like 9mm Browning Long is in the 240-300 ft lbs range whilst 9mm luger is 350-500. That's a pretty steep jump, 9mm Browning Long is much more similar to .380 auto. Still a fine choice. Dunno if I would take it over the Luger though.

To answer the "why not just make guns simple to start with", it's a 2 parter. 1 countries and militaries have pride. The nice new gun or weapon isn't going to be some cheap looking thing that came out of a cave lol. 2 there's the "this would be nice to have and let's do this on all guns" argument, and there's the "what is needed to make it functional." Look at the K98 during WW2 with the long eye relief scopes or the STG-44s with optics. Initially they wanted every gun to have optics, but that never happened

The French were the first ever country to adopt a smokeless powder rifle in history, they made every single other military rifle in the world obsolete. You don't get more cutting edge than that, nevermind all the other small arms stuff they were at the forefront of in the 1800s alone. At the time of its adoption, the Lebel was unrivaled. Twice the effective range, not needing to clean it during a battle, high capacity, fast. The tube magazine and cartridge design may have become issues later, but the entire rest of the world had to catch up before it even began mattering.

I've got a '43 round-receiver Izhevsk, refurb in the 50s with a Tula bolt and hardware. Shooting a 12" gong @ 100 offhand is surprisingly easy.
I've got a wartime TT-33, and it's shockingly crudely made. Every cut looks like it was done with a hand file, yet it's been flawlessly reliable.

The roommate who went to work designing the space shuttle landing gear matches up perfectly with my chemistry teacher. He agreed that it sucked.

Washington was pretty good on guns until the last decade or so. Now it sucks. If we get some favorable court decisions, maybe it can be good again.
Texas too, for some of it. The space side is a bit better. You get florida and Georgia.

With the dust cover open, you can push the bolt forward with your thumb. Admittedly it's not great, but you can do it.

Interesting observation. Having been familiar with the Honey Badger, I always thought the name 'Q' was kinda cool, an homage to the legendary Bond character. Stopped in here because Ian is cool, period, end of subject. Looked up at the publisher and saw 'Q LLC', First thought was "What the fuck is Ian doing on the dumbass channel?" Interesting put a Q with a reputable firearm and it is neat. Put a Q on the internet and it instantly becomes exceptionally stupid.
The gun community's fascination with German WWII weapons shows a lack of understanding of the proper historical context. Although we can appreciate them as a fine piece of engineering, they are in fact killing machines invented by the most heinous and oppressive regime ever. Let's remember that always, when discussing such firearms.

Agreed. So a most heinous and oppressive regime. Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge, Lenin/Stalin, Chairman Mao & Ide Amin are all in the running for that title. None of those however have a reputation of manufacturing high quality weapons. Apart from Stalin's “Quantity has a quality all its own" slogan. However he just borrowed that idea from somebody else.
