  • 7 Things to Avoid on Oahu | Don’t Make These Hawaii Travel Mistakes
You booked that plane ticket and have your bags packed for Hawaii. Hawaii is synonymous with paradise, and most people save up an entire lifetime to experience everything the island has to offer. And holy moly, you’re finally doing it!
Now, I was born, raised, and have lived here on Oahu for most of my life. I want you to make the most of your time here and not squander your precious vacation by making the same mistakes that I see countless tourists make time and time again. That’s why I put together this list of seven things to avoid on Oahu.
Before I go any further, everything I mention here are my personal opinions and are completely subjective. You don’t have to listen to a dummy like me, and please feel free to spend your vacation however you deem fit. With that being said, I can almost guarantee if you avoid these seven things, that you’ll have a much richer experience overall.
7 Things to Avoid on Oahu:
    1. Spending the whole time in Waikiki
    2. Trying the same ho-hum food
    3. Not renting a car
    4. Rush hour traffic
    5. Attending a luau
    6. Major sunburn
    7. Rushing
Those were my seven things to avoid on Oahu. I don’t want you to make these mistakes, and I hope this video has helped you plan for your future trip. If you have any questions or think I missed something, please feel free to drop a comment down below. I appreciate you watching. See you!

I visited Hawaii ... before you were born, and I've been back there a few times since, but each time I go there it seems to get worse, exacerbated now by the huge homeless issue that's prevalent in Honolulu/Hawaii. If you live on mainland U.S. why go to the trouble of going to Waikiki beach, when you can take a trip to Skid Row, thereby saving money on flights and hotels in the process? Sorry, but there are far better holiday destinations!
And before some dippy, republican supporter comes out with spurious data about homelessness being a democratic problem … like Trump and all the red states have cured the homeless issue in their respective areas - facepalm ... know I don't give a fig about the left or the right!

I've been to O'ahu three times before, and the absolute #1 thing I would recommend for tourist to avoid is, the Street (alley) venders in Waikiki who sell Chinese made 'Hawaiian' souvenirs. Not just because the souvenirs are cheap Chinese made, but more importantly, because the sellers are often NOT Hawaiian, and more importantly, they are pushy and rude. In all of my hunting for Hawaiian made souvenirs, you won't find them in the tent covered booths in the alleys in between Kalakaua Ave and Kuhio Ave, and in between Royal Hawaiian Ave, & Kaiulani Ave.; these places are tourist traps that should be avoided at all cost. You won't find genuine Hawaiian made souvenirs here; especially under Tents, but you will find them in the shops nearby. The difference of course is in the price; most Hawaiian made souvenirs are expensive, but make sure to ask if they are Hawaiian made; of course, there's no guarantee they are if the seller seems questionable, avoid it. Again, an honest seller will be friendly and informative, and a dishonest seller will most likely be allusive, distant, and rather rude and pushy... they don't deserve your money or time -- just walk away, and honestly, don't bother haggling with them for goods that are imported from Asia. To me, this is the absolute worst part of Waikiki. Food is another issue; it is hard for tourists to find authentic Hawaiian food; there are only a few placed near Waikiki that sell Hawaiian food; for fast food, you have to go to 'Rainbow Drive-In' on Kapahulu Ave (walking distance from downtown Waikiki, but bicycle is better -- it is the best for Breakfast and Lunch. Then there's 'Da Ono Hawaiian Foods'; back in '09, this was a good place, Though I haven't been there since. But check it out; they seem to have more authentic Hawaiian dishes worth trying. the Poi wrapped chicken was good. But stay away from the traditional national brand food places; while they are familiar, you're missing out on the other good eats you can find in Hawaii. Luau's are another issue; I've been to one, and it was OK; the entertainment was fine, and the food was good, but overall, it was just OK; not exactly what I was expecting.

@@muzkat101 I've already addressed some of your points.
#1 - If you want to see homeless people defecating on the beach, Hawaii is the destination for you!!! And with other states importing their homeless to Hawaii ... Skid Row now, has nothing on Honolulu!
#2 - Don't hire a car. It screams that you're a foreigner on holiday, and it heightens the likelihood of you receiving some kind of abusive comment or worse, from the locals.
#3 - The food is absolute garbage! Be it from the tourist rip off joints, or the local cuisine, the quality of American gm, pesticide ridden, processed food is poor at best, top that with Hawaiian cuisine, and you'll think you're back at school eating canteen lunches. It's truly appalling stuff, and were it not for the Far Eastern influence, it'll be even worse.
*Also, Spam? Come on people, I haven't eaten that cr@p since infant school ... and we're all adults now!*
#4 - Traffic problem is overblown, because you'll be heading out of town whist all the natives are heading into town ... and visa versa in the evening!
#5 Seriously, why bother going there? It's 2021 people, and there are better, cleaner destinations that have waaaaayyyy better food and bigger waves, for a lot less money, and where you won't have to see homeless meth heads defecating and fighting in the streets ... and TBH with friendlier, more welcoming people!

    • @muzkat101
      @muzkat101 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@utubecomment21 There was a homeless problem before '09, but I can only imagine how bad it has gotten since then. I recall an effort back then to move most of the homeless back to their state of origin, but others saw this as objectionable. Half the homeless are non-natives; regardless of race or color, mostly a lot of mainlanders who got stuck there after a lot of partying. As for 'local' homelessness, I am not sure about how bad it is; but of the numbers of homeless that I saw, I know most were white, and most likely mainlanders. But regardless were I go; even here in L.A., homelessness is still a huge problem; it is hard to go anywhere where it doesn't exist. As for waves; I was too Haole and inexperienced as a surfer to take to more exclusive beaches; to many 'locals'. in SoCal, I mainly stick to Bolsa Chica. As for food, we've got tons of good places. And for traveling, like you mentioned, its time to check out some newer and better coastal or island destinations other than Hawaii... I agree.

I lived on Oahu for 6 years and all these are right on. Get out of Waikiki for sure! In or near town places to visit: Manoa Falls or Puu Ualakaa State Park on Tantlus or Makapu'u Beach. If nothing else, find McCully St in Waikiki, and walk up to University of Hawaii (or take The Bus) and walk around the beautiful neighborhoods in Manoa Valley. Get lost a little bit, have an adventure!

I absolutely loved our honeymoon there and in Maui in 2016. We did stay at the resorts (we splurged, I mean it was a 2-year late honeymoon). We did a lot of the touristy experiences, ATV ride in the mountains, climbed Diamond head, Matsumoto's shaved ice, snorkeling, sunset cruise, and toured all of Pearl Harbor. Such an amazing experience. And yes we definitely bought the $16 100+ SPF sunscreen for my terribly pale skin. Highly recommend it.

    Good info!!!
I was just there the 1st week of Feb, stayed at Hotel Renew, I rented a car, I ate all the things you mentioned and the Poki Limu I had was a pleasant surprise seeing I'm not a big seafood eater. I was on the north shore, many of the lookouts, came across a few waterfalls and simply roamed the island. Spent time at the PCC, the Waikiki Zoo and even went to a Luau at Germaine's.
Ewa Beach was my favorite, it was me and a few ladies there.
    I'll be back in November.

Also, watch out for the guys in downtown who are carrying parrots around.
They will just put those parrots on your shoulder without even asking you, and offer to take a picture. After they take a pic for you, they will be demand payment right away, like $20 for that one picture.
As soon as you see these crooks, just walk away or ignore them if they approach you. You don't want to spoil your happy mood in Hawaii.

Great video! I love Oahu and this will be very useful for everybody. Well done! I live on the Big Island and we were discussing sunscreen today. Very often when it says “reef friendly” or “ reef safe” it really isn’t. We all need to take a deeper dive into what is actually an acceptable sunscreen and not harming the coral. I was at Kahaluu where there are “reef teachers” helping educate the visitors there. I just wear a rash guard and pants and I’m good to go with zero sunscreen! A huge bit of aloha is they have sunscreen for the visitors that have the wrong kind. Thanks again for a great video. You are very fun to watch!

Never lived on Oahu, but we have grown to love it there and have gone at least 6-8 times. These are all really practical and helpful tips. We actually enjoy staying in Waikiki, but all the way at the Kapiolani Park end. We always rent a car as well, despite the steep parking prices overall. Totally worth it to take a drive up to Byodo-In Temple, North Shore, Hanauma Bay, or Manoa Falls and get back in time to grab some lunch, go to the beach, hit Safeway on Kalakaua all before evening rush hour traffic! PCC is a whole day experience (as can be North Shore), but worth the trip. Thanks for the tips, hope that your channel keeps growing!

It got the name from someone, spray painting it on a rock in the 70’s I believe. It’s been called that ever since. I saw one article calling it “Pray for Sets” but it doesn’t mention where it got that name from.

I visited in Hawaii couple times. I absolutely agreed with the video. However, using a bus system that would be taking too long from point A to B. There is a place that you can park for free with plenty of parkings not far from a zoo! I went to a local Walmart, Costco to pump gas and enjoying local foods. Loved to surf at Waikiki...No surprise with traffics, I got use to it with my State: California- It is bad as Hawaii. Thanks for the post. Mahalo !

Better yet. skip Oahu totally: Fly direct to the BIG ISLAND . You won't miss anything ....Plus you will get to see a real active volcano in action. The Hilo Airport code is ITO and the kailua/Kona airport code is KOA if you are looking to buy tickets.

Went to the "Big" island and stayed in Kona. Was hit immediately with the VOG and almost got an Lung infection. Was terrible as it came in every day at around 12-1pm. You could see it. Tried to fly out and wanted twice what paid to get there. had to go to med stop. Realize the VOG moves around with the vents opening and closing but would go to outer smaller islands that do not get it period. So much for my first and last trip there....
