    You say that this movement is impractical, but I do it during non-lethal spars with my friends every once in a while, and they always end up laughing so hard I can get right up to them and land the hit.

    • @aoiwjdioaiowd
      @aoiwjdioaiowd 8 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I can see how the snake would be practical with a parry, or to unsheath and immediately go for an overhead strike

      All martial arts drills are rigid sequences. The difference between drills and sparring is evident once you spar.
      The Drills develop a muscle memory so you can perform small portions quickly without thinking about it too much.

    • @viennaa1100
      @viennaa1100 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Im doing it, its hard, you need rly good muscles to be fast enough. Anyway Fighting is everytime a Mindgame, let the people say what they want, its a Mindgame. If they Laugh at you because you doing the Whirl false, let them laugh Train hard, prove them next time wrong and land Hit on Hit dont even let them strike back or move their Finger, you can do this with the Whirl.
      Whirl can be used for fast attacks but there is no power behind, you can cut but not seperate. Other use for Whirl would be Heavy Attacks with high Precision. Most people thinking how the fuck you want to do a Heavy attack on a Whirl? Just try out you will see yourself. Snake-Whirl fast attack-Whirl bit Heavy attack-Whirl Heavy Attack, Whirl backwards try to land a hit on head, and go on your Position where you standed before. Most of your friend or Opponents will be extremly confused and will loose the Mindgame against you.
      Train, Train, Train you can use this. Its Hard, confusing and need Huge stamina. But you can pull it off, with no problems, most normal Attacks using more Stamina then the Whirl himself. Try out everything you will be surprised what you can do with the Whirl. After you pulled of the Whirl, the feeling is incredible :D.

      I assume this is a joke, but for any idiot out there that actually thinks this is practical, it's not. Turning your back on your opponent is always a bad idea, and there is never a good reason to intentionally do it, and if you have half a brain you'll notice why. There are techniques that will perform a million times better, without leaving yourself completely open. If you're doing it to play a "mind game" you're completely relying on your opponents tolerance. So even if it does work once, that doesn't mean it's a good idea. I'm not saying you can't have fun, but don't go around thinking you've discovered some lost technique. Side note, it's a total dick move to hit someone (especially a friend) while they're laughing. You'd have to be a total try hard to do that while sparring.

    • @einarblood-axe9328
      @einarblood-axe9328 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@innos3997 Yeah, but hes talking from a real life perspective. In real life, spins, twirls, pirouettes, flips, and all the other crazy things a Witcher does in a fight would not only be impractical, but dangerous. Let's say two HEMA, thats historical European martial arts, practitioners of equal skill meet and have a fight to the death with equally well made longswords and average clothing, no armor. This is very much like what an old duel would've been like, by law they had to fight on the most equal terms possible. Same weapons, same clothes, and relatively equal skill, though that can be hard to quantify. In this scenario if one of them tried to do a Witcher styled spin or pirouette, he'd immediately be punished for this with a stab in the back from the other fighter. In a real sword fight you never turn your back to the opponent. Fancy acrobatics in sword fights are only an element used in video games an movies to express one fighters amazing speed in comparison to other fighters. In the game, I totally let it go, it's rule of cool and super badass, and Geralt can pull it off lore wise because of his superhuman speed and reflexes. In a real fight though? It would be like handing your opponent your life of bloody steel platter.

      He is not taking about real life perspective... Also there was another Alex comment, and i was responding to other one, but now it is missing

      @einarblood-axe9328 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@innos3997 I mean, what else if not real life could he have been talking about when calling it "impractical"? If he would like to clarify that would prove me right or wrong. But without direct word from the OP we can only infer what he meant through the implications of his words. The implication I got was that when he called the moves "impractical" he meant it from a real life perspective. Even if it turns out that he wasn't talking from a real life perspective, the rest of what I said is still correct.

    Im no expert, but to the people that are saying this will work on farmers etc etc., this technique assumes your sword cuts through people like butter, which is obviously not the case, bones are pretty tough to cut. When the sword comes into contact with a good amount of bone, it would most likely stop the sword and throw the attacker off balance.

    • @cy5315

      Franx Fights Exactly, however the fact remains that in the game that this particular technique cuts through the torso, instead of an area without bones like the throat. Thats why its not viable.

    • @louistodd5
      @louistodd5 8 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      True but to be fair this is something you would perform at high speeds on groups of people, not one on one. If you stabbed one opponent in the face very quickly the others in the group would just stab you in the back. In the Witcher 3 this move serves as the successor to the Group Style from the first game where it's only really useful in groups.

    • @davidkyo1985
      @davidkyo1985 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      If we're working from the original supposition, ie. that this wouldn't work out too well for you in real life, then you also didn't fight groups of people all by yourself in real life (unless you were massacring unarmed peasants to amuse yourself or something). Getting in a melee against more than 2 enemies was a sure-fire way of very quickly having your internal organs put on display.

      @ThisIsZielman 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +TheEquinoxeHD It's not. It's most definitely not. You may cut something while performing this, but it would be inaccurate and mostly uncontrollable. It's more of a sword-dance-technique, flashy and impressive.

    THank you so much for this. I've played Game of the year edition and I'm reading the book series in preparation for the netflix series but I find the combat hard to understand or visualise. IN particular the piroette and half-piroette. I could not understand why a person would want to do a piroette in a sword fight and leave themselves open and vunerable. Thank you, this helps a lot.

      A simple thrust or a decent parry would probably best it. Also, moving from a 'wrath' guard into a downward strike, like usual, would also be quite effective.

    This is very easy to do actually once you get it down. I did dance and cheer most of my life and they are mechanically pretty much the same techniques. The spins and pirouettes look harder than they actually are, this video breaks them down extremely well and once you start to grasp the mechanics and practice more this will become very easy to do.

      If you're a witcher and can perform this at super high speed due to your super-human strength, this move is perfectly practical because your speed will cover up the opening at you back while you spin. So in other words, don't attempt this in a real fight unless you are a witcher. XD

    Lovely done. Showing a move sequence like this would benefit a lot from also showing and explaining the footwork, as many people find footwork in general and stable rotations/pirouettes in particular rather challenging, all the more so with the added momentum of a sword swing. Your comment section would probably look better if you made it even more obvious in the video (not just the description) that you're aware of this not being a practical technique. Many thanks for the video, I'll be looking forward to more.

      against one highly skilled opponent I'd have to agree and even that would depend the fighters weapon, technique, style, and depending circumstance, but against 4 farmers with small clubs that are already terrified with cloth clothing... seems pretty gold. like a tornado kick and a jumping heel kick they aren't for every situation but when that situation arrives their deadly kicks, even against skilled opponents. there's a reason these techniques haven't been forgotten, they have their use. timing, technique, and circumstance is key

    • @kulkan4743
      @kulkan4743 9 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Ok, again farmers it would work properly. But I need to admit that witchers are mutants, super Quick and they are training whole life. So that style of sword fighting is made by them, for mutant swordfighters :-D Dont try it in real life. I was checking this at trainings and it didnt work even without my full armor :-P

    • @rgh1132
      @rgh1132 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Definitely, witcher's are mutated to win. But not everyone is built to fight with flair because it's more of a dance. Practicality trumps flair most the time, that is because most people use flair at the wrong moments and in bad circumstances. 1v1 against a skilled opponent definitely shouldn't be used as a starting move. I could see the whirl being helpful if the battle ground was rocky and you've already gained the upper hand, opponent's on his heels, fear sets in due to situation, the whirl ensues and opponent loses focus trips over rock. Game over. Still impractical of a technique. But sometimes impractical is good in 1/10... 1/20 of the time maybe

    I'm glad you point out that this technique is impractical. As someone who does HEMA, I can see how long the prepatory movement is and how wide and big the swings are ... while your doing this, your opponent is doing nasty things to you and you have little ability to defend yourself because either your sword is behind you or you are in the middle of a huge swing. The periottes are even worse as you turn your back on your opponent. I hope other people understand this too, if they are at least interested in looking at this from a semi-serious perspective.

      I think it's best to train with a light sword and use a light sword. ;)

    • @rollingthunder1043
      @rollingthunder1043 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +The Sword's Path Yes, that was the point I was going to make: The Romans trained with gear that was double the weight of anything that they were ever going to be expected to use in an actual battle, so they would go from being trained to handle their training weapons to "Gods above, this weapon is so light! I can hardly feel it in my hand, this is amazing!"

    • @Cruelty1633
      @Cruelty1633 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The weight is less important than the point of balance. Even if a bokken has the same weight as a 42 inch katana, the fact that the center of balance is off will affect all muscle techniques used.
