  • Episode 289: Join Kidney Health Coach James Fabin and the renowned Nephrologist, Dr. Rosansky, as we dive deep into the world of blood pressure medications, both for those with Kidney Disease and those without. Are you wondering if lisinopril, amlodipine, or thiazide diuretics are right for you? Look no further! We'll explore the benefits, potential risks, and the reasons these are commonly prescribed for kidney health. Harness the power of knowledge to make informed decisions for your kidney health journey.
Here are some of the blood pressure medications Dr. Rosansky spoke about to help with reducing protein in urine (proteinuria or albuminuria):
    1. ACE Inhibitors: ACE inhibitors work by blocking the action of the enzyme responsible for the production of angiotensin II, a hormone that narrows blood vessels and increases blood pressure. Some common ACE inhibitors include:
    - Benazepril (Lotensin)
    - Captopril (Capoten)
    - Enalapril (Vasotec)
    - Fosinopril (Monopril)
    - Lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril)
    - Quinapril (Accupril)
    - Ramipril (Altace)
    2. ARBs: ARBs block the action of angiotensin II by preventing it from binding to its receptor. This helps relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure. Some common ARBs include:
    - Candesartan (Atacand)
    - Irbesartan (Avapro)
    - Losartan (Cozaar)
    - Olmesartan (Benicar)
    - Telmisartan (Micardis)
    - Valsartan (Diovan)
    3. SGLT-2 Inhibitors:
    - Canagliflozin (Invokana)
    - Dapagliflozin (Farxiga)
    - Empagliflozin (Jardiance)
    - Ertugliflozin (Steglatro)
    - Sotagliflozin (Zynquista)

Super helpful! Thanks Doc and Dad! I was put on Losartan and my eGFR dropped to 58 and my doc and I both freaked out. Knowing this is expected takes a load off! Turns out I was dehydrated and eGFR went back to 63 after properly hydrating. I also was lifting more weights which upped my creatinine. Anyway, thanks for this super helpful info!

I believe the doctor says it can lower a bit but overall Losartan can extend life and help with hardening of the arteries etc. He said Losartan was one of the better drugs for kidney disease. Hope that helps. The Dr also mentioned a low protein diet but not too low for kidney health as well keeping top number BP within 130 to 120. Also he mentioned protein in the urine along with high gfr as being more dangerous.

Hypertensive here. Tried Lisinopril. About coughed to death. Tried Amlodipine. Got acute abdominal pain. Now on Benicar. It's causing some diarrhea. Going back to the doctor this week to check on options, it's so frustrating being sensitive to medications. I have several med allergies as well. Allergic to Motrin, Naproxen, PCN, Omeprazole. My CBC and CMP are normal. I'm a nurse. I take my BP daily. Right now, I have no kidney issues, but my dad had Hypertension, CHF and CKD.

Aside from me being visually impaired and getting nervous on the ride over etc. Literally nine times out of 10 the individuals even the D ours are not taking BP’s correctly! The arm is down the arm is not on a table etc. etc. it is horrible and then we get all agitated and upset. So yes take it at home do what Dr. R is telling us. BEWARE This is what happened to me. My PCP upped my Lisinopril from 10 mgs to 15. My kidney function was at 28 and dropped to 12 after taking blood work for another doctor. My PCP almost sent me to dialysis before my time! I was taken off Lisinopril by my Nephrologist and blood pressure is high and causing a slew of other problems. There were no other changes to other meds or eating habits that would have caused this decline except the up in dosage. Not sure what I can take that won't kill my kidneys.
