- The secrets of the Malay martial art of Silat have long been closely-guarded by its practitioners. Now, an American fighter is hoping to do what no Westerner has ever done - unlock the secret world of Silat, and master its deadly fighting style.

In my opinion, black magic in a modern context can be interpreted as the purpose of the martial artist himself, therefore Indonesian Silat has a spiritual element, the higher the level of martial arts knowledge, the easier it is to take someone's life.

Silat in the hands of bad people would be very dangerous. therefore silat is not only about fighting and defeating opponents but also very closely with individual characters. when someone learns pencak silat, the teacher will ask the student's promise that this martial art is used for the benefit of many people, not for crimes.

Once my friend show me his silat "jurus" (movement) called Merpati Putih (White Dove).

You know, we indonesians are always in Awe for silat but only few of us want to learn it.... Not because we are lazy, but because we understand that silat was made for killing, not self defense....
I am a dan 10 of Aikido and learnt some kempo, I fought karateka, Wushu practitioner, and some real thugs, but if silat master challenge me, I'll deny it immediately.
self defense and art of killing are same thing in real fight your opponent are not one but many have you see a street fight one on one that why silat style are to finish opponent in single strike so we can move to another opponent

@@code_flxc2231 Silat is from both Malaysia and Indonesia. Both country is the same country before, until some war, history thing and stuff happened. Malaysian called their Silat is Silat Melayu and Indonesia is Pencak Silat.

1st strike will most likely deflect the punch than fracture/break the bone. it's not that soft and you use the same bone to strike/deflect so unless your bones are made of steel, it won't break it.
2nd move, the joint is less likely to be dislocated because you are pulling downwards along with the whole arm. but if you twist to your left side while pushing up (on the elbow and holding the shoulder in place), it will dislocate the bone.
I'm not dissing the style/moves but the description of the narrator.

As you said in the first strike, it most likely deflect the punch. But from what I have learn this technique, our right hand hold the wrist of the enemy and our left hand break or dislocate the bone on behind elbow. I hope you understand my english.
The second strike I am strongly agree with you, it does not do any much damage except the bone from the elbow will hurt more. Sharing is caring.
Orochi Chris thanks for that. because you've explained that you were suppose to hold the opponents wrist, it is much more possible that the practitioner can dislocate or break the opponents arm. but that would still hurt on the practitioners side also.

Silat is not suitable for competition because all the moves ends with locks and followed by lethal blow.if there ever gonna be safety rules , its always gonna be like halfway unfinish flow.no one will see the beauty of silat.

Thats why i want to learn real silat that is actually for self defense and not limited by rules for competition.Techniques used in silat competitions and real silat are VERY different.Techniques used in silat competitions are still silat,but they are very limited due to it being just a competition.

I dislocated the shoulder joint of someone with silat because he wouldn't stop hitting my shoulder.
The dude was 6'5 feet and I am only 5'10 and skinny but athletic.
The oponent was former military and after an few warnings I defended and popped his arm because he resisted and me throwing it in really fast as an reflex.
I helped him pop back his shoulder and he never tried to tease or spar with me again.

No,silat is not for killing but,silat for defense ourselves from enemies attack.....in malaysia are too many enemies that come from school students,kidnapper,gengster,and other.....you know, gengster are not only come from adult, but it started from school students that always bullied someone that are weaker....so thats why we need silat to defense ourselves.....silat is also a sport but, silat cannot be use easily to hurt someone....So, as the silat coach, they need to teach their students diciplines.....just what I said (silat cannot use to hurt someone that are not enemies). Silat are use if only in urgent....

for the longest time i've been rehearsing in my mind what to do in case some idiot throws a punch at me, this technique is a very good alternative to my deflecting his punch then chopping his throat then stomping on his knee sideways.
an arm triangle choke while incapacitating the punching arm and also breaking one leg, i like it.
It ain’t gonna do anything if you’re unskilled. Now that’s just overestimating your power if you don’t know what you’re doing and what you’re using it for.
u have to develop reflex and muscle memory before you can perform this. normally we will practice this move 50-100 times in a session, apart from many other moves. and you keep practising the move even after many many years.
And also, u need pretty good smacking from your master before you can do this correctly.
