    • @toomuchtruth
      @toomuchtruth 8 ปีที่แล้ว +103

      +Dustin Trinidad I'd think that they took an average of a few punches. With an elite fighter like him delivering maximum power each punch using correct form won't be an issue. So that would make the results very accurate in the end.

    • @rochem38158
      @rochem38158 8 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      of course there's human error, but this practice was meant to show the force of humans not a machine.
      and a machine wouldn't be able to accurate punch the same with each glove or barehand. they used a human because you should be a tiny bit faster with the smaller gloves and even a tiny bit faster than that bare knuckle.
      what this was meant for was to show how the impact to the brain (only impact that usually matters) is very minute between the two gloves and barehand.
      a boxing glove is bigger but harder in the strike area. it's not meant to be very flexible for grappling use.
      this only proves to me what I've known forever, don't get or punch anyone unless you're doing it for a sport.
      a concussion is a concussion all the same

    • @dustin3596

    • @rochem38158
      @rochem38158 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Dustin Trinidad not the differences in gloves and no gloves. the machine would swing the same speed with each, that's the problem.
      a humans punch would be at slightly different speeds, we're talking hundredths of seconds.
      it probable a machine could adjust for weight and wind differences, but I'm not positive that much $$$ was set aside for such a test that means nothing to the sports.
      you're probably correct, but does it matter ? I'm pretty sure everyone involved in fighting knows the minimal differences in impact between the gloved and non gloved punch.
      gloves are for hand protection, I think this little study was more for the casual fans who think there's a huge difference when there's really non

      if you full force hit someone with bare knuckles you are most likely braking your hand
      the skull has much stronger bones than your hands
      can you brake somoenes face with a punch sure! no doubt. but if you full force a punch with no glove you are braking their face and your hand
      with a glove you can break your wrist if you are terrible at punching at best
      at the expense of not braking their face
      but at the benefit of being far more confident at hitting with full force
      ie a person will definitely hit you harder with a glove than with a bare fist

      Ex pro fighter here. The impact feels so different in each case. The boxing gloves have way more concussive impact. It feels more like a "boingg" hit like being hit with a big heavy sack of dough.
      Getting hit with small gloves is more of a sharp shock. Like being hit with a baton.
      The boxing gloves are much more likely to knock you out, but the small gloves do more damage. The boxing gloves are also much more likely to give you a solid impact whereas smaller gloves are almost always glancing blows.
      Think of it like when the boxing glove hits you it's impact is spread over a large area BUT it means more of the force is transferred to the target rather than dissipating

      Also to add to this - impulse. Same principle as safety in cars (collissions) since the larger padding takes some more time to compress it distributes the force over time. It's stupid to talk about force to begin with (it's equal regardless of glove) but, as you say, it is distributed differently with the different gloves - in time and over different areas.

    • @gl6146
      @gl6146 8 ปีที่แล้ว +110

      Once on MMA training I was told boxing glove can be more dangerous than bare fist or MMA glove. I remember it is supposed to have something to do with softness of a striking area. Knuckles have the hardest and the smallest striking area and this causes the energy to "shatter" on the surface of a skull, causing bruises, cuts and bone fractions. And in boxing gloves, thanks to the softness of striking area, more of this energy gets delivered inside the head, causing more damage to the brain (again - I'm just saying what I was taught).
      Plus, I'm not sure if fast K.O-s are safer than multiple strikes. Not long ago a young boxer in my country got K.O-ed in his first professional fight. He died in the hospital.

  • @quiettimegaming3642
    @quiettimegaming3642 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1048

    The difference is in the kinetic delivery and distribution, which I don't know if they got into or not...
    But what it ACTUALLY means is that full boxing gloves delivery significantly more blunt-force/concussive impact compared to MMA gloves more localized force.
    So, while MMA gloves will be noticably more effective at dermal trauma, as well as being more likely to damage skeletal structures (due to having a finer "point" of impact), you're far more likely to experience *concussive* damage getting hit by a boxing glove due to the larger surface area and general blunt force impact.
    What that REALLY means is that MMA gloves are more likely to bust you up, while boxing gloves are more likely to rattle your brain (causing more long-term damage), despite the measurable force being relative/having a negligible difference.

    Dumbest test ever... the major difference is in how the hands are taped. Having done both I can tell you that you can hit a lot harder with boxing gloves because your hand and wrist are like in a cast. The tape under mma gloves is much less and less on the wrist.

    You can see at the end with the comparison that he went through with the hook more when he punched with the boxing gloves. They should have done at least 5-10 punches with each and gotten an average, because what if one of these punches was an outlier, like what it on average the bare fisted one would actually get 100 higher but he wasn't used to punching the heavy bag bare fisted. It doesn't seem right that an MMA glove with 4 ounces for pros or 6 ounces for amateur would be give the same padding as a boxing glove with 10 or 12 ounce gloves, and I've used a variety of boxing gloves myself and the lighter ones tend to hit harder, and bare fisted obviously felt like it had the largest impact.

    with the MMA glove you have far better contact with what you are hitting. Meaning, your hand has closer contact to the face, body, etc. Due to the boxing glove providing more protection, for the boxer when punching, together with hand wraps this enables him/her to hit harder than they would with MMA gloves. Purely down to the protection of the hand. In order to be as realistic as possible this, the hand wraps need to be factored in, and may be why there is only slightly more force in the MMA punching power. Also, the MMA glove is not designed, or suitable for heavy bag use so this test is effectively bunk. A sparring bob punching bag stand would be best suited, i.e man punching bag, to make this test as accurate as possible in hitting an actual human being.

    Boxing gloves absorb impact with a larger surfice when contact, it also protect boxers' fist. However it isn't necessarily safer than MMA gloves, since, rather than having a knockout and ending a fight, it prolongs a fight and help induces many more small concussions, which is potentially more dangerous due to it's subtle threat to a fighter.

      @melchaios 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Kornelius Heydrich They do reduce damage and impact, however, the higher incidence of deadly head injuries in boxing has more to do with new technique than with the gloves themselves.
      Back in the bare knuckle era boxers were very measured in their head shots, mainly because they feared striking the top of the skull by mistake and hurting their hand. Hence their tecnique was mainly focused on body shots and precise strikes to the face (nose, mouth and chin).
      Then boxing gloves came along and suddenly boxers start delivering headshots like crazy because they no longer have to fear breaking their hand. This in turn led to an unexpected rise in deadly head injuries in boxing, but the gloves themselves are not to be blamed directly.

    One thing gloves do is take the "sting" out of a punch. The "sting" mostly comes from impulse. Impulse is force delivered over time. Gloves don't so much diminish force, they just spread it out. MMA glove padding is denser than in boxing gloves, so they have a similar effect on slowing the punch.

    If you hit exactly the same every time you swing your fist, you're delivering the same amount of force. The only thing gloves are for is dispersing that force over a wider area of your fist, protecting your knuckles and your fingers from having that force distributed over 4-5 small points and therefore making damage to the hands significantly less likely.

    • @peezieforestem5078
      @peezieforestem5078 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the key is, delivering force to what? If you imagine hitting with a spring glove, then most of the force is wasted on compressing the spring, not transferring to target. This is an exaggeration, but hopefully you get the point. Having a glove with padding is different from having same-size and same-weight solid glove, because some energy is wasted on deformation of the padding.

    The padding lowers the pressure/stress at the point of contact. Bigger padding provides better protection against breaking bones and what not, but does very little to dampen the force of the punch itself, where concussions are caused by accelerating the brain at a high rate. Therefore, it may be true that bigger gloves won't prevent the KO any better than the MMA glove or even a bare first, but they sure help to prevent damage to facial features and the puncher's hands.

  • @CrazyCow500
    @CrazyCow500 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    you guys failed to incorporate wrapping. With a wrist wrap the fighter can throw harder punches with less worry on injuring the joint. In theory, a bare knuckle punch will have less force than a properly wrapped and gloved fist because the fighter will be more conscious of protecting their hands. Thats why if you go back and watch a lot of those old bare knuckle fights, fighters were throwing palm strikes to avoid injuring their hands with punches.

    • @RyanCocoMusic
      @RyanCocoMusic 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you're talking about the fighting where Bas was using open palm strikes, that's not to avoid injuring his hands, it was part of the rules - no closed fists..

      rjthompson91 You could be right but I'm pretty sure I listened to a talk with Joe Rogan where he stated that fighters were indeed doing it to protect their hands and wrist joints. I'm not denying that there was a time when certain promotions had rules against closed fist, I am aware of that fact. I'm just saying I think we both are right here.

      CrazyCow500 JRE 335, All Rutten ever mentions is you can damage your fist when you punch bare knuckle, he mentions throwing palm strikes as it creates a couple of inches of more space, and in other videos of his, he talks about the amount of power you can have in a palm strike as you use the bone at the bottom connecting the wrist. It's true too, it's a solid spot.

      +The great Goliath Boxers often incur micro-concussion (lots of small head damage), which eventually will lead to the KO or head trauma. MMA fighters often get knocked out with between 1 and 4 clean-landed punches (varies quite a bit), and obviously don't fight for nearly as long. To say either Boxers or MMA fighters have a better chin is ridiculous, because all people are different, the gloves are different, and the sport is different.
      MMA - Lots of damage right away
      Boxing- Small amounts of damage over time (15 rounds or whatever)
      I heard somewhere that boxing, small damage over time, is worse for your head than just getting KO'd with one punch.

    Boxing is more dangerous because they keep standing people up after they get nailed in the head, also MMA you don't have every fight with people concentrating on getting head shots. In MMA if you fall to the ground, the fight is basically over. in Boxing you get 10 seconds to stand and if you fail to stand in 10 seconds that person usually has a concussion.

  • @GeirGunnarss
    @GeirGunnarss 10 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    this is a bit misleading. A boxing glove imparts about the same force but it does so over a longer period of time(the thickness of the padding) and over a larger surface area, so force/time/area = less damage from the boxing glove.

    • @coolpoppabell4403
      @coolpoppabell4403 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You sir are correct. What they were measuring was total force rather than pounds per square inch. When it comes to knockout power, its all about pounds per square inch. Thats why every marshall artist is taught to land their punches on the index and middle finger knuckles. Those two knuckes also line up with the two forearm bones (radius and ulna), which helps prevent any displacement of power with minimal wrist bend. Thats why boxers and mma guys need to wherehand wraps. Bas' punching power would've definitely been more powerful with the wraps.

  • @Luke-te2ez
    @Luke-te2ez 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think that this experiment is a little faulty for the reason that they are all hitting a soft punching bag. Force = mass x acceleration. So essentially, the mass is increasing, but if the little mass of glove is adding to a disproportionate increase in acceleration, the bare fist hits harder. However, in reality you are punching bone on bone, so you cannot punch with the same acceleration without breaking your hand.

    • @CommanderBunbun-fx5xu
      @CommanderBunbun-fx5xu ปีที่แล้ว

      Bruh, a few more ounce doesn't make a difference. In your formula, mass refers to the weight of the fighter and acceleration to his speed. Since boxers throw a lot faster than MMA fighters and the gloves transfer the same amount of energy, boxers hit a lot harder than MMA fighters because it's the nature of the sport and the added hand protection

    gloves aside, when it comes to punching a boxer will always punch harder than an mma fighter. It's in the technique in punching, boxers became so used to not worry about other aspects other than punching that all they can do is master the art. They can sit well with the punches and generate maximum power from the ground to the hips while mma fighters are used to punch at different angles and body positions etc. Just see Conor, his fans talk non stop about Mayweather getting knocked out bec he won't expect the different angles from a mma striker and when transitioned to boxing there was almost no power felt. Floyd didn't even need to use his signature defense bec he has nothing to fear, not much weight on those conor punches and the little power that it has is nothing compared to the past boxers floyd faced so he took hits so easy
