I’ve known Silat since The Raid films. Action sequences of those movies are awesome, and seeing the main protagonist, Rama, fighting never gets old.

Harimau Silat was developed for fighting in wet lands and rice paddies.
Sumatra Silat was developed for steep mountain terrain.
Brunei Silar was developed for fighting on bridges over water.
Seni Gayong Silat was developed for dry land on open terrain.
Penchak Silat was developed for "sport"?
Area of operation and context reveals how each Silat art was developed.
Certain characteristics tend to prevail in particular geographical regions, as follows:
Kicks - West Sumatra, North Sumatra
Hands/Arms - Jakarta, West Java, Sulawesi, Kalimantan
    Grappling - East Java, Sumatra
Strikes (hands and feet) - Bali, Central Java, Madura

Started Silat back in the late 70s, along with Muay Thai in Malaysia, where I was born. And picked up FMA when I moved to California. I primarily focus on Silat/FMA today as it is harder to do MT in my old age. 🙂I am glad Silat has more exposure today through social media and its influence on many other combat arts.

Finally you're talking about Pencak Silat. Just like Krav Maga and Ninjutsu, Pencak Silat is the one of five deadliest martial arts in the world. Greeting from Indonesia 👋👍

The early form of Silat originated from a martial art called "Sundang," which was created for the elite warriors of Majapahit. Sundang Majapahit is a martial art created by Mahesa Anabrang, combining techniques from the Singasari and Dharmasraya kingdoms. It also uses both swords and keris, with different styles for various combat scenarios: Sundang Gunung (Mountain) for defense, Sundang Kali (River) for offense, Sundang Laut (Sea) for conquest, Sundang Angin (Wind) for infiltration, and Sundang Matahari (Sun) for protection. Sundang Kali spread to the Philippines, influencing the development of "Kali Majapahit"
This is the truth that not many people know or don't wanna know, they have just speculated that silat came from the Malay region, but no one has ever clearly identified its exact location

I dont know about Indonesia, but here in Malaysia, we have an educational program called "1 Sekolah 1 Silat" or 1 School 1 Silat. You should cover Silat Melayu from Malaysia as well as we're much much different than our neighbour.

Tapi tetap saja Origin silat dari Indonesia..

    • @AQWonion990
      @AQWonion990 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah you're right its different because Silat Melayu from Malaysia only covers Sports and Self-Defense, while the Traditions of Pencak Silat from Indonesia covers broader aspects covering Martial Arts, Mental, Spiritual, Movement, Music, and Sports. Traditions of Pencak Silat encompass several Pencak Silat arts in Indonesia, namely Silek (West Sumatra Province), Bandrong Pencak Silat (Banten Province), Rencah Tebang Pencak Silat (Aceh Province), Cikalong and Panglipur Pencak Silat (West Java Province), Beksi Silat ( DKI Jakarta Province), Pencak (West Java Province), Cingkrik Silat (DKI Jakarta Province), Tiga Berantai (DKI Jakarta Province), Bakti Negara (Bali Province), Tapak Suci (Yogyakarta Province), Merpati Putih (Yogyakarta Province), Perisai Diri (East Java Province), Setia Hati Terate (East Java Province), even Kung Fu style Silat such as IKSPI Kera Sakti and Pro Patria (East Java Province), and many more. So, during discussions in Jakarta, one name was chosen to represent all types of Indonesian martial arts above, namely "Traditions of Pencak Silat". So, Malaysia only registered Silat with UNESCO, while Indonesia registered Silat from Sumatra and Pencak from Java. So, Pencak Silat is a broader martial art than Malaysian Silat.
And it should be known that Pencak Silat is more global because many Indonesian actors have made it to Hollywood and perform Pencak Silat. Just mention Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhiyan, and Cecep Arif Rahman. That doesn't mean I want to minimize Malaysian Silat Melayu

@@AQWonion990 Your point is really on point, I give you that. But I do beg to differ.
There's this one pantun, I like to share to you.
      "Kelat bukan sebarang kelat,
      Kelat mengkudu ada khasiatnya,
      Silat bukan sebarang silat,
      Silat Melayu ada falsafahnya."
This was shared by my Silat Gayong Warisan Serantau master, Cikgu Wan of Taiping.
See, bruv. What you see in YT and any other platforms on the internet, our silat do branch out into sports and self defense. But my good friend, lemme tell you a bit about the father of Malaysian Silat, Dato' Meor Abdul Rahman. Silat Gayong that was established by him, are full of philosophies branching even wider than mere sports and self defense.
You did gave a good examples. And yes, again as a Silat Melayu practitioner who was involved in several Silat Melayu styles namely Gayong Malaysia, Gayong Warisan Serantau, Gerak Pusaka Melaka, Silat Hang Tuah, Selendang Merah Perlis and Sri Gayong Panglima Ulung, the misconceptions on our nation's style is so outrageous. From Gayong, I learned not only about my race's impact on Tanah Melayu, I also learned our culture spanning hundreds of years after silat started to spread like wildfire here.
I also learned ilmu urutan melayu (Malay Massage Techniques) that is so important, I always be the one to be relied on in this matter. I am also a Sports Silat Exponent, so I do get where you going with your arguments. But even in the realm of sports, we also have our culture embedded quite deeply inside. For example, Solo Kreatif was contested here in Malaysia since 15 to 20 years ago. In Sukan Silat, I do believe Solo Kreatif is a bridge to showcase our philosophies. Our Solo Kreatif leans more towards the beauty of Tari, the preciseness of the gerak and how well we blend it together in wirama wiraga and wirasa. as for Indonesia, depending on who the player is, leans more towards strength, creativity in weaponry and the sharpness of the strikes. Note that this is only my point of view, observed in my 12 years operating as a Solo Kreatif athlete for my state and university, and as a Silat Seni coach for 6 years now.
Lemme introduce you to Silat Asli. Which comprises of Seni Tari Solo Asli, Seni Silat Pulut and Seni Jurus Massal Asli. I do believe this sort of categories exists in Indonesia in some capacity but as far as I know, none whatsoever landed here on YT. If you want to see how we adapt silat well here in Malaysia, suiting our slow and steady culture, look upon those footage of old masters of silat in Malaysia performing their tari, tempur and so on.
I know my argument kinda sounds like a shameless plug, putting myself in the center, but Silat Melayu really have a positive hold in my life and I really don't want misconceptions like this destroys anyone's view on our style. In my 12-year tenure as a Silat Practitioner, silat really helps me understand values unique to our own culture. How the amalgamation of moves, the fluidity of Tari, the strong robust technique of tempur kombat and the tactical brilliance that is our philosophy.
Think of this like Kung Fu styles in China, Taiwan and HK, ever place have it's own philosophies, techniques that are unique to their own styles, no matter if Kung Fu was created thousands of years ago in Mainland China. I wish we could celebrate our differences and get rid of those misconceptions. I am A huge supporter of Indonesian Silat, but man Silat Melayu also have our merits to exist here on this jagat raya.
Lastly, I hope my short explanation can clear up a bit on our silat's culture. I used to do this kind of debate with my Indonesian Silat friends so this misconceptions are understandable. Please my good brother, I encourage you to see for yourself, our silat's philosophies, the struggle rooted in every gerak, jurus, langkah, sikap pasang, tari seni silat, gerak tempur, kuncian, pentas so far and so on. If you have anything else to ask on our thousands school of styles, please hit me up. I would like to yap some more on this topic as it does irks me how our brothers in the other side of the seas didn't even know how deeply rooted our silat and our day to day lives.
If you read this till the end, thank you so much and have a nice day!
