Tractor Trailer Crashes off Freeway - Lands in Ditch

  • Tractor Trailer Crashes Off Freeway Into Ditch - No clickbait here! What you see is literally a loaded semi tractor trailer big rig that plowed through a guardrail and crash landed on its side 75' down the embankment. Crazy, right? But crazy is our specialty here and Alex and I came ready to rock in Hulk, a 50 ton rotator, and Big Flipper, a 75 ton rotator. We were assisted by Ricardo in unit 90 to control the tractor and tow it all away after.
    You'll notice we almost immediately get to work with our game plan, despite this job looking impossible at first glance. That's because we have tons of experience in recovery work, and most jobs are very very similar in theory. This one had added obstacles like being so far down, plus the guard rail that was still good by our trucks and how to get it on the freeway without damaging that. Many companies would have shut down the freeway to back up to this, but we knew we could do it off the side with only ONE lane closed to keep traffic open.
    First step was to put the rotators so that each one is 90 degrees off the side, with Hulk stationed in the rear and Big Flipper at the front of the trailer. Next was to offset unit 90 to rig to the tractor. This truck is small and nimble so it was easy to put it around 45 degrees while still staying in the lane closure. Rigging to only the trailer would have been very very difficult since the tractor would just fight us and needed to be pulled at an angle to follow the trailer.
    Now the grand finale, getting it up and over the guardrail. My last few videos have seen us barrel rolling an empty trailer and even loaded containers. Here we attempt a very advanced maneuver, by mid air / barrel rolling a fully connected loaded tractor trailer. This allowed us to upright it and get it over the guardrail in one shot, and man can I just say how epic it looked? I really hope all the angles captures it great, because in person it truly was a sight to see and be proud of.
    I was there so I know how cool it looked, but what do you guys think? How did you all like the multiple iPhone/DJI/Drone angles? Let me know if you liked it so I know to keep making this content and please subscribe to show love :)

    If anyone was to ask any CHP officer who is the best tow and recovery company out there, they would say hands down, it is Pepe’s. Any other company would have just dragged that rig up the hill and tore it all to pieces. You did it with that trailer all in tact. You actually saved that company money because that trailer is still usable. Great job again guys. Josh, supervising was amazing.

    Viewing from Ireland, If that happened in Ireland the motorway/highway would be closed and fire service would remain on scene until its cleared , I'm also amazed at the traffic driving as normal speed on both sides , in Ireland if theres any type of incident then all traffic almost stops to have a look , known as Rubbernecks . I cant get over the size of the wrecker trucks , absolutely huge , we have nothing that big . Brilliant vids and great teamwork .

    • @tiredoldmechanic1791
      @tiredoldmechanic1791 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Ireland probably doesn't have many roads big enough to handle large trucks because the roads were there for many centuries. I am surprised that Germany doesn't have rotators. Fire departments have cranes that go to wrecks.

    • @gustavostensson1048
      @gustavostensson1048 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@tiredoldmechanic1791 we in europe does not have these because of weight regulations, this truck itself weighs more than the legal weight of an eu 8 axle truck, so it would not be able to tow anything without a over weight permit, therefore it is more resonable to use a crane in these cases

    EPIC recovery and you did an AWESOME job with the video!!!! Man, at about 15:38 when Big Flipper slid over I about jumped out of my chair!!!! That was INSANE!!! Big Flipper was pulling hard enough to move it's well planted 73,000 lb self!! CRAZY!! Using different cameras and the drone made for some really cool footage showing pretty much every step. And, you did all of that without damaging the guardrail!! Seriously, VERY well done you Alex and Ricardo!!

    • @PepesTowingService
      @PepesTowingService  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Remember I went over my rigging formula and how with the incline and terrain and tractor damage the trucks “feel” more force , I calculated about 1.75x. So flipper had the front of the trailer PLUS the rear tractor. The load cell line when already coming up was over 20k. Flipper EASILY saw 3x that when it first went in to break traction. Nothing to scare haha it sure looks crazy but once you break tension you’re in like Flint

    Very interesting the rigging aspect of this and the amount of thinking and knowledge that goes behind it, very similar to what we do with difficult/tricky trees with our rigging climbing and our cranes.

    Bet this one had to be a real change compared to all of the inter-city work you all do. It's so cool to see a family run business being so successful. Back here in Ohio we see some nasty wrecks & as you mention - it's always a hurry up situation. Great content & it's appreciated by us gear heads! Awesome fleet!

    What a job there! you can never plan enough for something like this-'cuz eveything can/will go wrong. Great execution--and having the right equipment makes all the difference in the world. When you have that whole rig suspended in air--that is NOT the time to worry about-did I buy the best chains or slings?
    Nope--you need total confidence.

    • @PepesTowingService
      @PepesTowingService  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yup 💯 accurate. That’s why I say you always over rig and you NEED to see the end at the very beginning. We knew we had the iron and rigging for it and once we knew what our plan was it was a matter of executing it

    you all did an amazing job. Truly respectful of equipment, keeping everything together. I am a driver and I have not seen a recovery work this well. Awesome job to all. Your great. I appreciate what you do. People have to understand traffic back ups and the like. It amazes me when I come up on an accident and see people trying to weave in and out. They need to not do this as they could hit someone as they are trying to speed by. People seem to be in a hurry more and more. They only understand when it hits their loved ones. It's a shame. You guys did a great job. ❤❤
