I've owned this receiver for six years. Each time I think about upgrading, I just can't justify it given how good the unit sounds and it's feature set.
I purchased one a couple weeks ago but returned it last week as I found i wasn't using most of it's features. It was a replacement for an Onkyo TX-8270 network receiver. I use a WiiM Pro+ to stream to the receiver. I'd connect my iPhone via AirPlay to the WiiM and used one of three apps on the iPhone for music (my music library on Apple Music, PlexAmp or RadioBox), so never took advantage of the built-in streaming services within either receiver. I was really only using them as amplifiers. So I returned the RR2160MkII and replaced it with a pair of Outlaw Audio's Model 2220 monoblock amplifiers. The WiiM Pro+ integrates perfectly with them and functions as the preamp, DAC and streamer. Even has a 12v trigger to wake up the 2220s. Turned out to be a bettter option for less money and twice the power. Though, I have to say, the RR2160MkII is a beautiful unit.
I think it looks awesome. And being direct to consumers, heck yeah. If this had to go through normal vendor channels it would be at LEAST twice as much. Personally I like the NAD sound and trust they (he) knows a thing or two about a thing or two. I’m surprised you weren’t more impressed by the sound. I’ve watched pretty much every review on this plus anything in its price category for an integrated, and everyone (!) said it sounded fantastic, especially for the price. I can’t wait to get mitts on it and rock out!
Sound is very clean and good! It's just when you listen to as much stuff as I do you start to go a little bonkers! We are fortunate to live in a time when most stuff from the majors doesn't disappoint. It's just a question of what flavor you want. My Technics is $2500 and the sound of the Outlaw approaches it in many ways. I guess I'm paying $1500 more for less features but a killer look! Thanks for watching!!!
I have the 2160, and I do like its look….. and it does push my LRS quite nicely. My other set of speakers are heresy ll…… For the money, it is a nice unit.
I does cover a lot of bases for under $1000. But I don't know if I could live permanently with the faceplate design... especially in a world with the Technic amps
I personally don't care at all about looks where audio equipment is concerned, to me it's all about sound quality, build etc. By the way I do have the Outlaw Rr2160 and love it!
@UnitedStatesofAnalog first.. . I've had it for awhile now, great for our living room because of so many input options.. Keep up the good work, I am planning to upgrade everything soon, so I'll be watching 👀
I love your listening room Bob. My house that I moved into 2 months ago has a 20 x 33 listening room. My old house that I lived in for 27 years had a 13 x 13 listening room. No more boom boom and much more airy. So enjoyable.
I think the styling is pretty cool. Having the name engraved would be a nice touch but the styling is pretty solid. I like the thick slab of aluminum on the front.
I’ve been an Outlaw fan since the early 2000s. Affordable, feature-packed processors (now out of production) and some really nice amps (I have 3 200-watt monoblocks and a Model 750 5x165 that weighs in at 75 lbs). They even do a good job with very complete and informative documentation. But yeah, that faceplate is not for me.
If I were going to spend up to $2K on a versatile integrated that gives max value and connectivity, I think the Outlaw would be in the Top Ten list mainly for its amp and pre section. The connectivity options are good but can be bettered with say an individual dac. etc., but would work well enough. Years ago I had an HK 3490 which offered as much power and it was fine but I improved on it with a Hegel which was alot more $$$. For a grand, I agree it's a fine product. Have other amps as well which are great performers but without all the connectivity and I am fine with that.
Another great vid bob, thanks! This would be at or near the top of my list, if it had hdmi, I’d pay an extra $100 or better yet, trade the phono for hdmi, hopefully that’ll be an option one day?
I've owned this receiver for two years for playing music only. I listen mostly to jazz, classical, and light rock on occasion. For speakers I have Magnepan LRS+, Rel T/Zero subwoofer. Music sources are Cambridge Audio Azure 851N (for playing FLAC files from SSD), and Rotel CD11 Tribute. Good amp overall but it seems a bit under-powered with 4 ohm loads. I was also using a pair of Emotiva T2+ before I purchased the LRS and I had to turn the volume up to around 75% to get about 86db sound levels even though the Emotiva are a bit more efficient. The unit gets quite hot as well. I don't particularly care for the volume display, it seems backwards and negative db as you turn the volume up. I keep the dial at around -30db for a decent listening level which is not very loud. If you have any music tracks that were recorded at a bit lower volume than normal this amp will be very anemic. I have a 35 year old Carver receiver with less wattage that kicks this receiver all over the place as far as power is concerned, but does not have the modern features. The unit sounds good overall with a nice clear sound and nice sound stage. Some folks don't like the looks but I think it's a very nice looking unit and very heavy and solidly built. Absolutely no background noise. I'll continue to use it and eventually sell it for an upgrade. At $999 it was a good purchase. I also recently tried and returned an Advance Paris A10 which sounded better in the high and mid-range but didn't have as much bass muscle which the RR2160 definitely has. Next I'll possibly try a Rotel 1592 MkII.
Great review!!!! I've always thought this unit was super cool and priced right for how well it's built. I would like to see the is in a gun metal grey vs. the bright silver. I think it would look better and would compliment the blue lights. Thank you, Bob!!!!!
Bob, i enjoy your channel. The outlaw design isnt my flavor however i am impressed with all the features it does have. Definitely a one stop shop if you will. I hope you will inquire with Audio by Van Alstine about getting in their intergrated CA1 or any thing else that catches your attention. A brand that much like outlaw is under rated and USA based. My current set up is the Rotel A11 tribute and matching CD player, bought for its features and design. Thanks for your time and look forward to your next video. Cheers. Brian Charlotte NC
Looks are so important to me that I could never go with it. Features are not that important either, BUT, given what you say about sound quality and for those that need all the features, I understand the desire to own.
The only things keeping me from buying this are where it is built and from what I understand if there is a warranty item that needs to be fixed the consumer is responsible for shipping it back.

I was looking into it, but they don’t have a black option. Well at least when I looked at it last because silver does not go with my system, but it’s nice to see this. I would get it if it was black. Thanks for the great videos.
Good take. Still, they told me it was cost prohibitive. Maybe because Outlaw produces a lot less units overall than, say, WiiM. Not as cost effective. I'm only guessing... if you can't tell!
Take a $10,000 a year licence and spread it across 1000 units a year... That's $10 per unit. Now take that same license and spread it over a million units ... that's $0.01 per unit. A lot of things that make sense in mass production are truly prohibitive in small runs and especially from boutique level companies.
Q. I'm in Canada and/or Mexico. Duties, taxies, brokerage, etc. are expensive. Will you declare purchased product with a lower value, or falsify the classification (e.g. claim it is a product sample or warranty repair)? A. No, this would be breaking the law. We are Outlaws for our direct, non-sugarcoated responses, not for breaking the law.
Size is important too, full size components are a no for me in 2024. Even if it is a relatively affordable component like this one, it is hard to justify when smaller components exist.
Faceplate esthetics? It's a thousand bucks! Don' be so greedy. I purchased one of these as a house warming gift for some friends lakeside home. I used it for about a month, replacing components 25 to 30 times its price. Was it as good or close? Nope. But it didn't make me feel wanting either; well maybe the MC phono stage, but I left it as is and enjoyed it thinking just how good a grand component can be. I also know a few who did not like it. I think it had to do with excitement level you don't get with higher priced product. I think leaving in the loudness level and playing with the adjustments rather than being a staunch neutral, no tone controls in the signal path type helps.

Thank you Bob, but please skip the time-wasting spinning-head logo…beyond retro-clever but in a bad way. Love you!
Thanks for the feedback!
You could buy this and then pre-out to 2 Outlaw monoblocks.
@@mansolomd that's the plan, I'm sure!
I'm just going to say it the marantz stereo 70s is better.
hospital equipment ...ping!!
Wow... that's a hard take!
HYPE HYPE HYPE love the look but at 77 Cant afford (thanx to the government) a thousand for anything! Love your channel!
Ughhhh, gawd, I know. Tell me about it. The gubberment. Pfffft.
🙄
Take care of yourself! I appreciate your support!!!
1Sound
2 Design
3 User interface.
You have to look at it too. And be able to use it.
No-no's are (in order):
Too little:
-Connectivity
Too much:
-Size
-Power consumption
-Price
Thanks for the notes! I feel like HDMI is the not obvious omission!
hyp you
There are way too many competitor products with better looks than that Outlaw. There’s no denying aesthetics counts for a lot.
My god it’s ugly 😂I wold have one but it wold not be on display thank goodness it’s got a remote😎
Nice amp but veeery ugly one... They have to hire a designer. Such a mess of geometrical forms is too much even for outlaws :-) Other than that it's unbelievable what you receive for this price.
I hate to say it, and I listen to my hi-fi with my eyes closed. but this thing is fugly.
Only 30 lbs. Design is horrible. Reminds me to much of MCS (JC Penny) which I will never buy.
It looks as an 2003 low quality mp3 cd player...ugly as hell...
Not loving all of the quirky edits in this video. Seems a bit overproduced and doesn't really add anything useful.
@@vannk73 good to know... it's a process. Again, subjectivity is in all aspects of this business/hobby! I can attempt to be me or try to be someone else, Thanks for the input. I'll keep refining... you keep watching. Thanks!
@@UnitedStatesofAnalog I enjoyed the content, so don't get me wrong. I just found certain aspects jarring. I completely understand the fickle nature of TH-cam and trying to cater to an unpredictable algorithm. Thanks for being open minded.
Thanks!
