My dumb 12-year-old self who couldn’t comprehend what a “high-quality video game” was even thought “Huh…that’s it?” when I beat Sonic Forces for the first time. It was so deflating.
Sonic Frontiers is just everything Forces wasn’t. Ambitious and well written. Their only similarities were the level designs and that’s something that Sega has probably heard enough review on to not repeat that mistake
If I remember the Nintendo Life video correctly, it's not that he disliked Forces or thought it was bad. But that his points just... didn't make any sense. Like I remember him saying that it plays exactly like Sonic 06 or something similar to that and even I was like... it's a boost game. How does that play like 06.
At least sonic 06 has some good writing with stuff like shadow and silver and has project 06 and is also the funny game with beastiality. Hell, aaron webber while this game was being written kept saying to use stuff from an old script that would make the story at least passable and they MOSTLY DIDN'T LISTEN TO HIM! Except like, one instance is when someone was going to say "we're going in hard and fast"
I get why others enjoy the game or think it's overhated but personally this game doesn't really deserve any praise. They could've avoided so much disappointment if they were more honest about the scope and budget of the game, but they instead went in the opposite direction. They got people hyped from the reveal by saying "from the teams behind Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations" and pandered hard with returning villains only for both of those and so much more to be shallow and heavily undercooked. But once again, I gotta blame Sega instead of Sonic Team Also the fact that Sunset Heights was called the first level and ended up being the fifteenth is just perfect

I've always said that sonic forces is the anti-06, where both games tried to innovate the franchise, sonic 06 was far too ambitious and forces just didn't have the confidence to fully try anything interesting. 06 suffers from horribly unpolished gameplay with decent level design, whereas forces looks and plays well enough but the levels are just boring. Sonic 06 is a rather overwhelming experience, with so much bad game being thrown at you all at once, it can be either horrible or hilarious. Sonic forces is one note, it's underwhelming, slow paced, and just boring. Everyone will have a very similar experience. Weirdly enough though, they both tried to tie in a 2d game into their story, both of which making no damn sense to this day.

I consider Forces the worst Sonic game solely because of how creatively bankrupt it is. At least the other “worst” Sonic games have cool ideas and could be cool. This one plays fine but there are so few actual ideas here that it definitely qualifies as the worst in my book.

I think overtime people started to overhate it before frontiers released and disregard the budget, 1 year game development, and lack of old level designers because of Sonic Boom. It makes me go easy on the game when giving my opinions on it. Who wouldn’t want a game where you can make your own Sonic OC lol.

Frontiers is a very well-written script where nothing happens, Forces is a practically unwritten script where decades of history happen
